SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Thomas Memorial Hospital is cutting some employee hours due to economic issues.
According to a news release, the hospital has had a decrease in patient volumes, significant increases in charity care provided and bad debt and decreases in Medicare reimbursements.
Director of Marketing and Public Relations Paige Johnson tells WSAZ.com in response to these issues the hospital is now putting all non-clinical hourly employees on a 36 hour work week. The hospital will also have to control overtime and adjust employee numbers to the amount of patients.
Johnson also says there will be no merit increases for fiscal year 2011 at the hospital.
No layoffs are planned at the hospital at this time, according to Johnson.
"All of us are here to serve our community," said Johnson. "We will get through this difficult time so we can continue to provide our patients with the highest quality of care and medical excellence-every day."
Thomas Memorial Hospital just opened a state of the art facility in June that cost $70M.
The new addition provided a six floor building with private rooms, including some for labor and delivery. The project also included cutting edge technology and state of the art surgical rooms.

I just want to say THANK YOU to Administration at Thomas for causing this mess!!! I am losing hours on my paycheck and worried that I may lose my job while they continue to make the big bucks and will get there bonus at the end of the year for cutting everyone else. Why do you think your employees will not tell everyone the truth about how they are treated there? I already know of alot of people who are looking for new jobs and does not want to work for a place who is not going to give them a raise for the next year or show them any respect. Do you want us to just go ahead and work for free? We cannot continue to kill ourselves and work short staffed all the time and then expect things to get done properly or in a timely manner!!! I am honestly disgusted. When I first started at Thomas I really enjoyed it. Now I can say it has gone so far downhill! Steve Dexter and the rest of the Stooges need to go! Please leave the rest of us alone and let us do our jobs!!!!!
One thing left out is all the "out of court settlements"! My thoughts go out to the hard workers such as ALL not in administration. I would NOT take anyone/anything there. They are understaffed for procedures they are somehow permitted to do and lacking in sanitary, security and IMHO, need to let a long list of licensed surgeons go. I have observed this Mr. Dexter and he walks with his head higha above the ceiling and I KNOW employees that have worked there 20PLUS years and they have told me that he has NEVER spoken to them... What a team player- Mr. Dexter I had better end... I could go on and on but serves no purpose... probably see them in the courthouse soon due to their " Ignorance". This speaks on the intellect of the Board of Trustees as well and the names on that board would embarrass the entire county.
By the way--Emails have been sent at St. Francis reducing employee hours as well. Are the administrative staff at St. Francis taking a cut in pay like they are at Thomas? I work there and tell all my family and neighbors-if you want quality healthcare, don't come to St. Francis or Thomas. You may get a good nurse on dayshift, but you're on own at night!
