UPDATE 7/1/11
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A third person has been sentenced in a brutal beating and robbery in Charleston.

Telisa McCauley was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison. She was granted time served for one year she has already spent behind bars.

McCauley pleaded guilty to first degree robbery in connection with the beating of Jeff Moore last year in downtown Charleston.

Police say McCauley stole Moore's wallet after Earl Moore and Whitney Avery attacked him.

Earl Moore and Avery have both been convicted and sentenced for their roles in the crime.

UPDATE 5/6/2011@ 3:30p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It is case closed on a brutal beating and robbery that left a man unable to care for himself.

Earl Moore and Whitney Avery were sentenced Friday.

Earl punched and kicked Jeff Moore to the ground along Fife Street in Charleston back in May 2010.

Earl also stole $40 from Jeff.

Jeff Moore was beaten so badly he was left in a coma for weeks and is now living in an assisted living facility in Charleston.

Earl Moore, who is not related to the victim, was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Avery was sentenced to six months to two years in the Anthony Center because she served as a lookout during the beating.

A third suspect, Telisa McCauley also pleaded guilty in connection with the case.

In court Friday Sam Moore requested his brother's attackers receive maximum punishment but said nothing could ever make up for what Jeff Moore now has to face every day.

"Even in prison their quality of life will in many ways be better than what my brother Jeff will endure,” he said. “Though the assailants may hope for parole, Jeff will never be paroled from his paralyzed mind or body until he dies."

UPDATE 10/23/2010
CEDAR GROVE W.Va. (WSAZ) -- There was question of whether or not he would even survive after being severely beaten back in May.

Now, five months later, Jeff Moore is on the road to recovery; all thanks to the help of family, friends and even strangers.

group of people in Cedar Grove spent Saturday evening raising money to help a man who for a long time couldn't help himself.

Jeff Moore spent more than a month in a coma after being brutally beaten five months ago in downtown Charleston.

"It's a costly recovery, but one that's made remarkable by the love and support of his friends and strangers,” Peggy Short, Jeff’s neighbor, said.

Chris Taylor is one of those strangers. She's never even had a conversation with Jeff, but saw him often while he was in critical condition in the hospital where she works.

“I'd just be led to go to his room sometimes in the ICU. I would just stand in the doorway and I’d pray for Jeff,” Taylor said.

Now that she says those prayers have been answered, she felt the need to do more. Organizing a gospel sing gives her a way to not only help Jeff, but learn more about him by meeting those close to him.

"It just shows how much people care and want to help in any way they can,” Edith Adams, a friend of Jeff, said.

For some that means using their voices to get Jeff’s message out.

“All they have to do is look at this situation and see that there is a God and there is a miracle, there are miracles still being performed,” Short said.

Short says Jeff is in a rehab center in North Carolina and is doing "very well."

Three people are set to go on trial March 14 in connection with his beating.

UPDATE 8/22/2010 @ 5:00 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- After spending three weeks in a coma, Jeff Moore is finally on the road to recovery.

Jeff is still undergoing rehabilitation at CAMC General Hospital. He was well enough to make a video, thanking his friends and family for their support. The video was played at the fundraiser.

UPDATE 8/20/10
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A fundraiser is being planned to help a Charleston man who was severely beaten and robbed along Capitol Street.

The crime happened on Saturday, May 22 when Robert "Jeff" Moore was walking home after leaving the Alan Jackson concert at the Charleston Civic Center.

Jeff suffered severe brain injuries. He was in a coma for three weeks and is currently undergoing physical and occupational rehabilitation.

A fundraiser will be held on Saturday, August 21 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Morris Memorial United Methodist Church along MacCorkle Avenue.

The fundraiser includes a rummage and hot dog sale and a raffle for a Dell laptop computer.

All of the proceeds will go to help with Jeff's medical expenses.

Three people have been charged in this beating.

UPDATE 5/30/10 @ 2 pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- According to a nursing supervisor at CAMC, Robert "Jeff" Moore is now under observation.

UPDATE 5/28/10 @ 2:20 pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Charleston Police have arrested three people in connection with the beating of a 53-year-old man near Capitol Street. Jeff Moore is still in critical condition and police say the attack was all over $40.

Robert "Jeff" Moore, 53 of Charleston, was found in an alley off of Fife Street around 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 23.

Police say he was severely beaten and suffered head and other injuries. He was taken to CAMC and remains in critical condition.
Investigators have charged three people in connection with Moore's beating.

Police say Earl Moore, who is no relation to the victim, started yelling at Jeff Saturday night and then hit him in the head and knocked him to the ground.

According to the criminal complaint, Telisa McCauley then rolled Jeff's body over and took his wallet, which had $40 in it.

After she took the money, police say Earl Moore then punched Jeff in the face.

Another woman, Whitney Avery, was serving as a lookout, according to police.

The wallet was found a short distance away from Jeff's body, and police say the three split the money.

Police say the three are part of a gang that hangs out in the area of the transit mall and jump people in order to rob them. Charleston police made three arrests on Thursday for two different attacks.
Avery and McCauley are also charged with robbing another man at knifepoint.

"You should be able to walk through the transit mall and not be fearful of your safety," Sgt. S.A. Cooper with the Charleston Police says. "We have made numerous arrests over the last few days and we are going to continue to attack the problem."

Earl Moore, Avery and McCauley are all charged with first-degree robbery in connection with Jeff's beating. The first-degree offense includes acts of violence.

Police believe they have the main players of the robbery gang locked up, but there could be more arrests.

Moore is being held on a $50,000 cash bond. Police say Moore owns a barber shop in Charleston.

UPDATE 5/24/10 @ 7 pm
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- There are still no arrests after a 53-year-old man was found severely beaten in downtown Charleston Saturday night.

Now people are on edge and concerned for their safety.
"I wouldn't want to be down here after dark," Richard Allen of Charleston said.

"It's foolish to think your safe walking in any downtown street in any city in America," Jerry Waters of Charleston said. "You should carry mace, a stun gun or something."

Police are connecting the dots by pinpointing all of the crimes that have taken place in the downtown area near Fife Street where the beating happened.

One arrest was made in another case around the same area, which police tell WSAZ.com could be connected to this brutal beating.
Robert "Jeff" Moore was found lying in a parking lot and unconscious, having suffered serious head injuries.

"When something like this happens, it's not only tragic for him and his family but it hurts the economic development opportunities of downtown," Charleston real estate broker Howard Swint said.

Kanawha Coin Shop has been on Fife Street since 1977, but the owner says it's not the first time things have happened outside his business.

"During the night, there's only a certain amount of patrolmen out around and anyone walking in this area would be kind of a risky thing," owner Doug Bumgardner said. "Things do happen."

"Whenever resources are moved from one spot to another there will be a problem that rises up somewhere else," Charleston Police Sgt. S.A. Cooper said. "We address crimes as they come and we try to be proactive."

One of Moore's friends says it's tough seeing him as the victim since he was such a nice guy that was willing to do anything to help.

"He was more than a friend, he was like an older father figure almost to me because we would talk everyday on the bus, have conversations and just talk about life in general," Brian Taylor said.

Moore had such serious injuries that he hasn't been able to tell police what happened or why he was there.

He is still in critical condition at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

If you have any information about what happened to Moore, call Charleston Police at 304-348-6480.

Let us all learn from this ordeal. This man did nothing to deserve what happened to him. he was going about his life and being kind to every person he encountered, that is what decent people do.nothing wrong with that. citizens..stay focused and be aware of your surroundings at all times,if something dont seem right remove yourself, avoid going out alone at night.God...Bless this man Jeff and heal his wounds, restore him to be the person he once was and lord bless his family for they have endured much sorrow.

For all the strangers that have helped. This is so much like the story of the good samaritan. The bad of the world have the same M.O. I'm touched that there are still good people.
