CEO Ben Hatfield says International Coal Group plans to more than triple production of metallurgical coal production next year.
And Hatfield told a group of investors in New York the company plans to add more metallurgical coal production in 2009 as well.
He says the aim is to cash in on strong demand for metallurgical coal, which sells for higher prices than coal used to generate electricity.
ICG expects metallurgical coal production to total 500,000 tons this year, up from 100,000 in 2006.
Scott Depot, West Virginia-based ICG controls more than a billion tons of coal reserves and operates mining complexes in West Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland and Illinois.
