HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Huntington recently has received a bad rap for crime, drugs and poor finances.
But there are still plenty of good things happening in the city, as well as strong efforts to put a good face on a city with a lot to offer. From the river to the roads, new looks are popping up everywhere.
Huntington's viaducts are a vital part of the city. They're the gateway to downtown and, until recently, they weren't pretty.
"They had fallen on hard times. They had murals painted way back in the day that were peeling," said Charles Holley, director of planning and zoning for Huntington.
But a new coat of paint and lights have brightened up viaducts, giving them a fresh look for now.
"We know we have flooding issues, but those are going to take more time and money to solve," Holley said.
And in just a few days, you can add plants to this project -- that part just in time for the Marshall University/WVU football game that will bring thousands of new visitors to town.
Move down to the riverfront and you'll see even more changes, starting with new signage. There even will be a nature trail -- the Ripper Trail, named in honor of Huntington resident and world renowned artist Chuck Ripper.
"People would say we have seagulls here? I’d say, yes, in the winter, we have seagulls here,” Ripper said..
He has been a professional artist for more than 60 years, specializing in wildlife. Now, he'll bring that specialty to Huntington's riverfront.
"It's cool to be asked to do something, you know. But sometimes people will ask me to do something that’s not in my bag like portraits. Do you see any portraits around here?" Ripper said.
And that's just the beginning of the changes at Harris Riverfront Park. From fitness trails to sculptures -- Huntington is on the rise with a new appearance.
Final design plans for the new Huntington riverfront project will be complete soon. The Greater Huntington Parks and Recreation District has assumed responsibility for the riverfront park and is spearheading the latest changes.
Plans for the Paul Ambrose Trail for Health are also nearing completion. The riverfront will be the start of a fitness trail that will run several miles throughout the Huntington community.

You can slap paint on a dump, but it's still a dump. Huntington is the worse part of WV.
I think this is great! But we need to find more ways to get the community involved!
that all sounds great but I cant imagine going to the riverfront by myself to exercise or walk the trails.
