Commemoration Ceremony Held at Historic Coal Mine Site
A 30-year-long effort to reclaim all historic coal bond forfeiture strip mine sites in Ohio is nearly complete.

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A 30-year-long effort to reclaim all historic coal bond forfeiture strip mine sites in Ohio is nearly complete.
On Thursday, the Ohio Division of Mineral Resources Management held a commemoration ceremony at a coal mine reclamation site in Lawrence County.
The 34 acre site was mined by Belville Mining in the 1990s.
Mineral Resources says it represents one of the last forfeited unclaimed coal mining projects to be restored by the agency.
Ohio Department of Natural Resources Director Sean Logan says, "By the end of the 2010 construction season, ODNR will have successfully completed reclaiming all 288 coal permits forfeited during the last 30 years."
Nearly 43 million dollars from bonds and coal and industrial minerals severance taxes will have been spent to reclaim 94-hundred acres.
Coal forfeiture sites are areas that have been mined after August 1977, but not reclaimed to required standards by the mine operator.
As a result, the Division of Mineral Resources Management collects the forfeited bond monies from the mine operator or from the operator's bond company and contracts with a third party to complete the reclamation.
