HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It's the big holiday weekend; the last hoorah for folks looking to get away before summer is finally over. But with all the extra traveling, comes a lot of safety concerns and things you as the driver should be aware of.
AAA Travel predicts close to 34.4 million Americans will travel this Labor Day weekend, many of those hitting the pavement.
"I'm just going to see my sister that's the only living relative I have left now," says Betty Hess about her travel plans.
"We're heading for Williamsburg, Va.," Judy Bartley tells WSAZ.com's Stephanie Schelkun.
With the increase in travelers, police are stepping up their game, too.
"We saw three state troopers over in Kentucky just before we crossed the state line," says Dale Bartley of Illinois.
When you're driving and if you do get stopped by police, what are your rights as a driver? Can an officer ask for more than just your license and registration? For example, can they ask to see your cell phone's texting history or even your GPS?
"Here in the state of West Virginia, no," State Trooper Parde tells WSAZ.com.
Whether you are planning a quick trip to see family or friends, or you are planning a nice long "staycation," the goal is to stay safe.
