UPDATE 9/13/10 @ 6 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It's been one year since Charleston Police Officer Jerry Jones was killed in the line of duty. Fellow officers, friends and family members came together to mark the somber anniversary.
"This tragedy is still emotional for me to discuss," Charleston Police Chief Brent Webster said during a memorial service at the fallen officer memorial on Washington and Pennsylvania Streets Monday. "Our department remains heartbroken as we continue to pray for Jerry's family."
Even though it's been a year, it was clear that time hadn't healed all wounds
"It's been a real fast year and in a lot of ways it's still surreal," Chief Webster says. "There's so many lessons to learn and there's so many people that care about him so I don't think we'll ever forget."
Patrolman Jones died at the age of 27. And all who knew him described him as a person who lived to serve his country and community and an all around good guy.
On that night one year ago, Officer Jones and others began chasing Brian Good. Good refused to stop and started ramming police cruisers with his truck. Police opened fire, killing Good. Officer Jones was accidentally hit by a fellow officer.
Now, the community wants to make sure his sacrafices are never fogotten.
A group from Elk Center, Jones' hometown, raised money to install a memorial on Dickinson Street in Charleston near the Southside Bridge.
Also, a bridge in Elkview on Route 114 now bears Jones' name.
"Some people are on this earth to protect the rest of us," Mayor Danny Jones says. "And that's what he did most of his adult life."
Dozens of officers from surrounding areas gathered at the memorial on Monday in addition to many family members and friends.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A Charleston police officer who was killed by friendly fire during a chase will be honored at a memorial service on the one-year anniversary of his death.
The city police department said Friday that the memorial service for Patrolman Jerry A. Jones is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at the Charleston Police Memorial. The memorial is at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Washington Street.
Jones was killed by friendly fire on Monday, Sept. 13, 2009, while trying to stop a pickup truck.
Police have said other Charleston officers opened fire as the truck's driver, Brian Good of Miliken, tried to ram two police cruisers with the vehicle. Good also was fatally shot.
During the ceremony, Washington Street will be temporarily closed at Pennsylvania Avenue. The closure will begin at 9:30 a.m. and re-open around 10:30 a.m.
We will have a crew at the service. Keep clicking on WSAZ.com for the very latest information.

Why celebrate this officer's death like he was a hero, there are officers killed every day that do not get the media coverage this gun ho cop did. It's their job to put themselves on the line like any other employee in a dangerous job. Social Workers put their lives on the line every day but what media coverage do they get. We cannot call everyone a hero just because he does what his job requires.
Let's not give the commenters who are anti-CPD, the satisfaction of a response to their comments!!! We know who they are...they are family and friends of Brian Good >:-/ and that they are ingnorant! I'm sure they don't own a dictionary, so I will tell them what that big word means. IGNORANT ~ Having little knowledge, education, or experience; uneducated; inexperienced; lacking knowledge in a particular area or matter. I think that pretty much describes all of them!! God Bless Samantha, the Jones Family, Fellow Brother Officers and all of Jerry's Friends. RIP Ptl Jerry A Jones
it was a beautiful service. thky all that was their. Jerry will be missed and remember by all that loved him that worked with him.
