She's seven years old, but now has a scar for life after a stray dog bit her in the head.
Animal control officials say the dog bit her seven to eight times, leaving puncture wounds in her head.
It happened on Route 7 near Royalton in Magoffin County.
Seven-year-old Sheila Collins is out of the hospital and recovering.
The dog was caught and locked up.
Sheila says she'd never seen the dog before, but says she was playing and it attacked her.
She's trying to be a normal little girl again, but her head still hurts.
“I was talking to mamaw and I turned around and that dog bit me,” Sheila Collins said.
“Jumped and grabbed her and bit her in the head,” Virginia Gambill said.
She says the stray dog knocked Sheila to the ground and bit her eight times before a neighbor got it off of her.
“It was rough. We had a white towel and by the time her head stopped bleeding, it was red,” Gambill said.
Sheila was alert and talking, but emergency responders didn't take any chances and flew her to Cabell Huntington Hospital.
Animal control officers caught the German Shepherd and locked it up.
“I tried to load the dog and it bit me two or three times,” Steven Caldwell, Magoffin County Animal Control said.
Authorities don't know why the dog suddenly attacked.
“Nothing that I understand was provoked about it,” Rescue Squad Captain Carter Conley said.
The Collins don't want to see the dog again.
“The one that bit her, I hope it gets put to sleep,” Gambill said.
Sheila is expected to recover.
“Thank God she's fine, that it ain't worse than what it was. It could have been worse,” Gambill said.
Even after her wounds heal, she will still carry the scars.
“I'm scared of dogs now,” Collins said.
Animal control officers say the dog will most likely be put down.
They're also searching for an owner for the dog and if found, officials say there could be charges filed.
