U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd turns 90 today.
Byrd spokesman Jesse Jacobs says Byrd plans to spend his birthday quietly reading the hundreds of birthday wishes that have flooded his offices. Byrd also expects to have lunch with his staff and to visit with his seven great-grandchildren.
A surprise 90th birthday party was held Thursday in the ballroom of the Capitol Hill hotel. More than 300 people attended, including West Virginia's entire congressional delegation and Governor Manchin.
Manchin presented Byrd with a West Virginia Living Legend Award, which the governor created as a tribute to renowned West Virginians. The award has been given to only two other people: pro football Hall-of-Famer Sam Huff and retired Brigadier General Chuck Yeager.
Byrd, who has served in the Senate since 1959, is the oldest member of the Senate and longest-serving senator in history.
Late Tuesday afternoon, Byrd released a letter of thanks to his constituents in West Virginia. The contents of the letter are below:
A LETTER OF THANKS TO THE PEOPLE OF WEST VIRGINIA
FROM SENATOR ROBERT C. BYRD
Dear Editor:
I extend my heartfelt thanks to the people of West Virginia for their enormous outpouring of well wishes and birthday greetings on the occasion of my 90th birthday.
Over the years I have been profoundly blessed by a lifetime of rewards from the people of West Virginia. You have never let me down. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the trust that you have placed in me throughout the years, beginning in 1947 when you first elected me to be a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, and extending to this very day as I serve as your United States Senator.
I am extremely grateful to the good Lord for allowing me to live such a rewarding life and for giving me a wonderful wife, Erma, and a loving family. To my colleagues in the West Virginia Congressional delegation and to West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin, I extend my sincere thanks to each of you for your generous words on my special day.
Again, I thank each and every West Virginian for the opportunity to serve our great state. My very best wishes to every West Virginian for a blessed holiday season.
Sincerely,
Senator Robert C. Byrd

Did he ever hold a private job? Or was this always his job?
I saw Sen. Byrd on C-Span a few days ago. Although his physical condition is frail, he still is a powerful and respected member of Congress. Congragulations and best wishes to you Sen. Byrd--a "true" and dedicated West Virginian. HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Has Byrd ever renounced his membership in the KKK? Has he gone to Rev's Al and Jessie to beg their forgiveness? All the Democrats should be proud to have someone such as Byrd to represent them. Praise the Lord and pass the pork. Where was Byrd when the deals for the Toyota plant were being worked out? We need more living wage industry, not minimum wage waitress and retail jobs like Corridor G. What meaningful job has he held outside of politics? Does he have a residence in WV? Where was his wife buried? The answers speak of how he feels about WV. No residence in the state, wife buried in VA. This should make anyone wonder.
