CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The state Division of Natural Resources is reporting four hunting-related deaths since the start of buck season.

The latest report, confirmed Wednesday by spokesman Hoy Murphy, was the death of 59-year-old Robert Douglas Criswell of Martinsburg. Criswell died of an apparent heart attack while hunting in Hampshire County on Monday, the opening day of gun season for bucks.

The DNR also confirms that a 57-year-old man from Charleston died of an apparent heart attack while hunting in Roane County Tuesday evening. The Department of Natural Resources says Roger Whiting was hunting near Blown Timber Road in Newton.

Earlier, Murphy reported that 69-year-old John Myers, of Westernport, Md., fell from a 25-foot tree stand while deer hunting in Preston County and Ferrill Hall, a 68-year-old hunter from Orrville, Ohio, suffered a fatal heart attack after shooting a buck in Calhoun County. Those deaths also occurred on Monday.

About 320,000 hunters are expected to participate in the state's biggest season of the year, which continues through Dec. 1.

There should be a law about requiring some sort of physical before getting a tag like the anonymous article stated. This would be a wonderful idea. Lawmakers can make laws about other things that kill people, why can't they fix this one!

all this state worries about is how to tax us now if theyfigure out a heart attack tax we will be forced to pay

Maybe everyone should be forced to take a physical before receiving a deer tag, that would cut back on the deaths---- hey, that could be a law. Why aren't lawmakers acting on this is beyond me. Every year, it is a big news story about how many hunters have died. The state should do something!!!!!!!

I heard if you get old enough, you might eventually die. I think a law should be passed to not allow you to age, everyone just stops at 21. Jeff might then be happy. For those of you who are bad at math (Jeff), the odds of dying in the woods this year in West Virginia are about .0000125%, or 1 in 80,000. I will take my chances in the woods.

Did anyone happen to read the part that shows that 3/4 of these people died of heart attacks... Good grief people get real. Next you will think that it is illegal to celebrate your birthday or anniversary after 50. Statistics will show that lots of people die every year during these personal events. 320,000 people participate and four die. Let us now calculate the percentage of people who have died. You are more likely to fall over dead in your own house then to die in the woods while hunting. Next thing you know, PETA will be here protesting too. Get over it.

Jeff that is what is wrong with this country now. Everytime someone gets hurt people want more laws to protect us from ourselves. I am tired of all the laws protecting us from our own stupidity. I am a hunter so I do not think deer hunting is stupid, just laws like what jeff is talking about.

What would the law be "It is illegal to die from something you volunteer to take part in?"

With all the deaths every year during deer season, it seems like the state should make some laws about this like they do in the mining industry. Every time a miner gets killed, the state tries to make a law about it. Maybe it's just the publicity and a way to get voted back into office?
