The Cliff Notes version of the 11am announcement.

WVU President Mike Garrison says he's been through a few things, so he thinks it's time to drop the "new" in his title as president of West Virginia University.

Garrison mentions that it's good to have someone who understands "loyalty" on staff. Many questioned Rich Rodriguez's loyalty with his abrupt departure to Michigan.

WVU Athletics Director Ed Pastilong says Bill Stewart earned the job "the old fashioned way. He earned it."

The room is packed with 'Eers fans and alumni who have stuck around after the win in the Fiesta Bowl. WSAZ's Paul Gessler and Adam Cunningham are among them.

"We've been away but never gone (from West Virginia)," Stewart announced.

Stewart says he wants to be a West Virginian for life.

Stewart says it was a joy to work with the team the past couple weeks. He calls them the finest group of student-athletes anywhere in America.

"The people of West Virginia -- this game was for you last night," Stewart said.

"That game for me was for every assistant coach that never had the opportunity to get Gatorade dumped on 'em," Stewart said. "I often wondered what that would be like in the 33 years I've done this." Stewart says he didn't shower last night because he enjoyed it! He says his wife didn't mind.

Stewart says thirty years ago he proposed to his wife at a goal post at Magnolia High School. Before his wife came along, he told her football was number one in her life. He says "am I a great recruiter or what?"

Stewart promises to treat his players right.

"I don't deserve all this attention. I mean that. We're holding up a bus and a plane. Can you imagine that?" Stewart said.

"I just happen to be the lucky guy," Stewart said.

"Ive been interviewing, can I say, for a couple weeks? Longest interview in America," Stewart said.

Stewart says he made the deal last night with Garrison and Pastilong.

Every member of the coaching staff that wants to stay will have the opportunity to stay, according to Stewart.

Stewart says he never thought he'd have a chance to be a head coach again. He says he didn't put a lot of emphasis on it. He thought if it was meant to be, it would be.

Stewart says he told Pastilong he'd like to be considered. He says he never went to any player and asked them to promote him.

"This is my final job. Bar none -- I will never leave West Virginia University. And if I'm not getting it done, they won't have to tell me. I will tell them," Stewart said.

Reporters asked Stewart his biggest weakness. "I'm probably getting soft in my old age. I used to be a lot tougher," Stewart said.

"I told the team that there's times in your life to stop and smell the roses. We don't do that. I'm going to go home and smell the roses," Stewart said. "I told them enjoy this win."

Stewart says if he can get a hold of Governor Manchin, he'll have him call school off to celebrate the WVU victory.

Recruiting begins tonight. Tomorrow, he'll meet with coaches and get it underway.

Original story

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Interim West Virginia football coach Bill Stewart has been named head coach.

Athletic department spokesman Mike Fragale says Stewart will be introduced as head coach at an 11 a.m. Eastern time news conference at the team's hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The announcement follows 11th-ranked West Virginia's 48-28 win over No. 3 Oklahoma in last night's Fiesta Bowl.

Mountaineer quarterback Pat White, who ran for 150 yards and threw for 176 and two touchdowns, began stumping for Stewart on the field after the game.

White called Stewart a great man and a great coach who has the love and respect of all the players.

Stewart came to WVU as quarterback coach in January 2000 after two season as offensive coordinator in the Canadian Football League. The New Martinsville native was promoted from associate head coach to interim coach after former Mountaineer head coach Rich Rodriguez left for Michigan last month.

Stewart was head coach at VMI for three seasons starting in 1994.

His resume also includes stints as an assistant at Fairmont State, where he was a three-year letterman, and at Salem College, North Carolina, Marshall, William & Mary, Navy, Arizona State and Air Force.

The development comes just hours after WVU’s stunning 48-28 victory over Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

After the Mountaineers win, Pat White announced during the post-game celebration on the field that, "I think I speak for all the players when I say he (Coach Stewart) needs to be our head coach at West Virginia."

The following is Stewart's bio on the official WVU Athletic website.

"Bill Stewart is working with the Mountaineer tight ends this year after spending the last seven coaching the quarterbacks. He added the duties of special teams coordinator and was also promoted to associate head coach under Rich Rodriguez.

Stewart, a native of New Martinsville, W.Va., came to WVU as quarterback coach in January, 2000, from the Canadian Football League, where he served as offensive coordinator of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1999, tutoring two all-conference receivers and a 1,000-yard rusher. As offensive line coach for the CFL's Montreal Alouettes in 1998, Stewart's line blocked for Mike Pringle, the first 2,000-yard rusher in CFL history (and one of only six in the history of pro football).

A 1975 education graduate of Fairmont State, where he was a three-year letterman and team captain for the WVIAC champions in 1974, Stewart earned a master's degree in health and physical education from WVU in 1977.

Stewart's lengthy coaching resume began at Fairmont, where he was a student assistant coach for a season, before becoming an assistant coach at Sistersville (W.Va.) High School in 1975. In 1977, he moved to Salem College, where he was assistant football and head track coach for two seasons. In 1979, he moved to the University of North Carolina; he was later an assistant at Marshall (1980), William & Mary (1981-83), Navy (1984), North Carolina (1985-87), Arizona State (1988-89) and Air Force (1990-93). In 1994, Stewart became head football coach at VMI, where he was 8-25 over three seasons. His 1995 team was the highest scoring (24.5 ppg) squad in VMI history, and Keydet running back Thomas Haskins set a I-AA rushing record with 5,349 yards.

He and his wife Karen, also a native of New Martinsville, have one son, Blaine. "

Praise and a HUGE Congratuations to Coach Stewart and His WVU Mountainneers for a Great Victory both on and off the field surrounding everything leading up to and including the Fiesta Bowl. These young men each took it upon themselves to mentally prepare themselves for the challenge of going to Arizona to represent our great state, and to play football against their opponent, and to play to the best of their ability with a big adversity in front of them. Congratuations to the team for a GREAT victory on the football field as a team, and also for a victory for each member of the team off the field, a memory that will stay with each one of them for a lifetime. LET'S GO MOUNTAINNEERS Coach Stewart is a blessing in disguise for WVU in becoming our Head Coach, and I wish him nothing but success.

I am one of those displaced West Virginians who still call the state my home. I was proud of the team, the fans, and Coach Stewart and his coaches. It was a great day to be a Mountaineer.

Posted by: EC on Jan 4, 2008 at 01:05 PM
LD, I wish WVU well, and I know there are a lot of good students at WVU. However, I also know there are a lot of former students without an education standing on the street corner with broken dreams, and a newspaper article in their hip pocket from years ago telling the readers how good they were. I only hope closing schools was a "joke"! LD, Life Is Good!!

Posted by: dave on Jan 4, 2008 at 12:21 PM
I'm so glad that the Governor supports this new coach... Now that he's happy, and this WVU "crisis" is over, he can get back to doing the little unimportant mundane things; Running the state. Hey Mojo... You're the Governor... Not the AD for WVU. Let them do their thing, you do yours. Maybe you should stop screwing around and do the job people voted for you to do, not weep over Rich Rod for breaking your tender, bleeding heart. Nobody else can put their jobs on hold because their favorite college team lost.

Posted by: Cindy on Jan 4, 2008 at 12:13 PM
Just want everyone to know...this is not "that" Cindy....I wrote this: Posted by: Cindy No Doubt he is the "BEST" man for the job. I am honored to be living in the state affiliated with this team and this coach.I am excited about next season!!!!(((((((Just for the record)))))Go EERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: BOWL_EYED on Jan 4, 2008 at 11:15 AM
I know most of us kid one another about our teams etc.,Ky and WV get more than our share of hillilly jokes etc,but I truly wish WV all the success with this coach. He seems to be a humble man without the giant EGOS of most of these coaches.Ky won their bowl game, and yes it is rare for us,WV got the job done, and lets hope OSU does the same

I remember Stewart when I was a soph. at Fairmont State. I remember him as a decent felloe and a knock your socks off football player. Only one school hated the WVU more than marshall and that is Fairmont. But I guess I have to root for the eers a bit more now that an old class mate is the head man there. Thinking about it ,,it feels good to hava a Fairmont man and former marshall coach running the show in Morgantown.

WTG COACH..........GREAT GAME........I SURE HOPE ALL THOSE NEGATIVE PEOPLE ARE EATING THERE WORDS NOW....... WV IS A GREAT STATE.........GO WVU

Richie ROD who says you can't come home... We DO! SO LONG....LONG LIVE STEWIE

Posted by: no name on Jan 3, 2008 at 11:04 PM
I, too, along with other viewers was so impressed with the respect that Stewart and the players expressed to one another. If a mistake was done, you did not see Stewart get bent out of shape or yell at the player(s). I have the upmost respect for him and I could feel it through the actions of the players that they were very pleased and proud to be a "by G** West Virginian". So many emotions were expressed and pride was set aside. Tears of joy!!! GO WVU!!! Can't wait for next year. WV is so proud of you!!!

Posted by: LD on Jan 3, 2008 at 11:03 PM
EC, yes you heard it correctly, but i think it was meant to be what some call a "JOKE". Oh my goodness EC, go to a chat room somewhere and talk to Cindy, you two would hit it off very well. Im sure he understands education is important but has a sense of humor unlike you. Some SOOOOO need to get a life. GOOOO EERS!!! ( i do think they should close the schools for "eers Day" heck here, they havent been to school since christmas break, what would one more day hurt? Only EC's wittle feelings.

No wonder Cindy can't find a good paying job in West Virginia. She can't even spell!! Maybe she should attend WVU, where we have the greatest football team in the country! Way to go EERS!! You and Coach Stewart made us proud!!

Great game last night. WVU has a great team. One thing to think about. I see everyone is glad to have Mr. Stewart as the new Head Coach of WVU. I think he is HONEST, Hard working etc. But do you think it was kind of quick. What will everyone thing next season if WVU does not play as good. You will hate him and everything else. Mr. Stewart will be a good Coach he is new

Posted by: Kathy P. on Jan 3, 2008 at 08:20 PM
Congrats to WVU for winning the game and for getting a great coach. Bill Stewart has something that Rich Rod can't buy even if he's now rich....that's class. The game was awesome I loved seeing the Sooners and the naysayers get it shoved in their faces! Goooo Mountaineers!

Posted by: EC on Jan 3, 2008 at 07:37 PM
Did I read the statement correctly? The new coach wants to cancel school. I hope he made the statement in the heat of a moment. I hope he understands that EDUCATION must come first.

Posted by: morgan on Jan 3, 2008 at 07:02 PM
Stewart says if he can get a hold of Governor Manchin, he'll have him call school off to celebrate the WVU victory. He should deffiantley do that. It would make everyone talk for years. It would be awesome !

Posted by: not the mean cindy on Jan 3, 2008 at 06:52 PM
I was so happy for the team especially Owen Schmidt. We can't forget him. He is a great guy with a hard work ethic and team attitude some PRO team will be lucky next year to have him. I hope the "old Coach" was watching, he deserves whatever he gets.

Way to go WVU. Great Job Players. Great Job Coach Stewart. Hey Cindy try getting out and enjoying some of the things that the rest of us enjoy in life the Good Lord above our families and WVU Sports. As my son said last night who needs to be "Rich" when you have everything already. Looking for the 2008 Season. LET'S GO MOUNTAINEERS.

Posted by: T. J. on Jan 3, 2008 at 05:16 PM
Great choice, WVU! Coach Stewart seems like an honest man with his head and heart in the right place. I cried last night watching him with his players and I cried this morning watching him accept the job he clearly deserves. Way to go WVU players and coaches for a wonderful game. Way to go WVU for choosing the right man for the job!

COACH STEWART FOR PRESIDENT!!! Actually, I think that's a real good idea!

Posted by: Debbie on Jan 3, 2008 at 05:09 PM
I think its wonderful that they found a Head Coach for the WVU Football team. I watched the game last night and was very pleased with the performance of the team. Usually when WVU goes to a bowl game they are always listed as the underdog maybe that will change now. I think the players had a lot to do also with the decision.

Posted by: Jimmy C. on Jan 3, 2008 at 05:09 PM
Rodriguez who?

Posted by: Bob on Jan 3, 2008 at 05:07 PM
This game by far is one of the best I ever witnessed! The enthusiasm, energy, and emotion were unparalleled! Mr. Stewart is an outstanding example of a coach and person. He is a great leader and example for WVU football players, and most certainly places integrity as a higher priority than pay!

Posted by: ashley on Jan 3, 2008 at 04:57 PM

Posted by: LD on Jan 3, 2008 at 04:35 PM
Hmm. Looks like Cindy is disgruntled from standing in line at the unemployment office so long. Get over it, we are happy for WVU.Im glad that gov. manchin is attending something that is a good thing, instead of attending a disaster like he did at the Sago Mines. Some would gripe about anything. DONT WORRY, BE HAPPY CINDY. IT WILL ALL WORK OUT IN THE END. YOU WILL FIND THAT JOB YOUR LOOKING FOR!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 3, 2008 at 04:34 PM
Hey Al, I am proud of Gov. Manchin being there with the team, it is his job. You need to get a life!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Al on Jan 3, 2008 at 04:12 PM
Does Joe Manchin have to stick his nose in everybody's business?! I am sick of seeing his face everywhere! Let the team have the glory!

Posted by: Darrin on Jan 3, 2008 at 04:01 PM
Cindy should realize that with the entire nation (84%) ridiculing both the school and the state that football does become the center of attention at times. When WV overcomes some of the prejudices that other states have for WV then maybe more jobs and opportunities will come to the state.

Posted by: Rick on Jan 3, 2008 at 03:58 PM
I think Cindy should understand that the entire nation was ridiculing not only WVU, but the entire state of WV. This win proved the naysayers wrong and brought money to the university so they can give away more scholarships so West Virginia high schoolers can have a better chance to attend college.

Posted by: Terri on Jan 3, 2008 at 03:51 PM
Thank goodness! I was so hoping they would select Coach Stewart and after last nights game it certainly proved he deserved it.

Posted by: Christina on Jan 3, 2008 at 03:50 PM
Wow, Hollywood couldn't have written a better ending! Any coach who hugs their quarterback and looks him in the eye and says, "I love you, Son" is one heck of a man in my book. (I'm not sure how many of you saw him say that to Pat White on the sidelines. He said it during the game, long before we won.) Those kids had an enthusiasm about them that we never saw when "what's-his-name" was coach. Coach Stew is man of integrity. I have never been more proud to call myself a Mountaineer!!!

Posted by: ELIZABETH on Jan 3, 2008 at 03:48 PM
I think that Mr. Stewart is a very Humble man and deserves this chance, he has been given. The game was played as a team, the way it should have been. Congrats ERRS well deserved..

I am so glad to see Coach Stewart get the job. He is truly a CLASS ACT!! It was nice to see him and the players interact. There was so much respect and emotion on the sidelines, it was fantastic!! I would love to watch the game again, It was just that good! Maybe WSAZ will show it again just so we can relive that wonderful game!! To the Players, Coach Stewart, and Coaching Staff THANK YOU for showing the world how Great & Wondeful West Virginia is!

Posted by: Amy on Jan 3, 2008 at 03:11 PM
To Cindy: You are obviously not a sports fan so why are you even reading this article? To complain and spred your negative opinion? Go somewhere else. This is a positive board for WV pride, Coach Stewart and the WV Mountaineers. 58 positive, proud comments and then you--but of course their is always one sour apple in the bunch. I am very proud to be a West Virginian today. I was very proud to see the governor there supporting kids, athletics and our great state. I'm sure it means a lot to the players that they have support of state leaders and not negative souls like you. WVU is very important to West Virginia, the players aren't just football players, they are attending college and will hopefully keep their education and pride in WV. Go Mountaineers and Congrats to Coach Stewart on his new position!!

Posted by: kim on Jan 3, 2008 at 03:06 PM
I have never been prouder to be a West Virginian. Coach Stewart will represent WVU with the class that the players deserve. His best recruiting tool will be his frank talk and believable word. I encourage any recruits to give WVU an honest look. Our boys were a class act last night and now let's move on towards more positive days!

Posted by: Ken on Jan 3, 2008 at 03:03 PM
Good Choice WVU. I think he proved that last night. Next November, you can watch us Buckeyes open up a big can of you know what on Rich. We will enjoy it.

Posted by: kim on Jan 3, 2008 at 02:56 PM
I watched the game last night hoping to see WVU win, of course. What I hadn't counted on was the opportunity to witness a great coach interact with his players with a genuine respect that was obviously mutual. Not only does WVU have a great coach now, but they've also gained a great person and role model. Congrats on the game, guys! More importantly, congrats to Coach Stewart and to the team for the great opportunity to work with such a great role model.

Posted by: Lilly on Jan 3, 2008 at 02:40 PM
Congratulations, Coach Stewart on a job well done and a great performance with your new "family." We applaud you and wish you the best. We will be standing right behind you. Enjoy your success and do stop and smell the roses. Every day is precious. Good luck to you and your family.

Hey Cindy, you know Governor Joe is a West Virginia fan too. This isn't about Joe and politics, it's about WV coming together in the national spotlight. Let us Mountaineer fans enjoy the day and lighten up.

Posted by: ME on Jan 3, 2008 at 02:10 PM
I said last night when I saw the interaction betwwen coach Stewart and the players that I felt he should be the head coach. NEVER have I watched a ball game and seen the respect that I saw last night between players and staff. Coach Stewart showed everyone last night that you dont need to throw things and curse kick dirt whatever when something doesn't go right. I saw more compassion in Mr. Stewarts eyes for his players than I have ever seen. Good job coach at showing these boys there is other ways to get things done. A good pat on the back and a calm voice works just as well if not better that screaming etc.....

Posted by: mags on Jan 3, 2008 at 02:07 PM

I think its great that WVU won. Congrats!!! Rodriquez really screwed up when he left like he did. To leave just before the Fiesta Bowl. What a putz he is. Just proves who the real coach is, doesn't it? Kudos to COACH STEWART!!!! Let's just see how long he lasts at Michigan. They'll probably be looking for a new coach in a few weeks. I would think they would anyway. Who wants to have someone who quits the team just when he's needed. But then again, Coach Stewart, maybe he wasn't needed all that much. Congratulations WVU.

Posted by: Keith on Jan 3, 2008 at 01:29 PM
All I can say is Rodriquez who!!! Mr. Stewart where lucky to have you. You showed us last night what you and the team can do for WVU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way to go Mountaineers, each and every player showed their talents on the field. Coach Stew - you are what West Virginia is all about. I have never been prouder of a WVU coach (30 years of watching)than I was of you for your support of our boys last night. Good or bad you treated them with respect and dignity. You represented football and the great State of West Virginia with the pride that we have lacked for so many years. Nice to have a coach on the sideline that is not swearing cuss words at the players in plain view of the TV cameras. Coach Stew - Your a class A gentleman! Folks remember that Coach Stew has a lot to offer WVU and we have a great team, so for our 2008 season, WIN or LOSE, lets give them our support 100%. Coach Stew will make WV proud and he will get the job done. God Bless WVU Administration for doing the right thing and many thanks goes to the players at WVU for rallying behind Coach Stew for this honor of being named our head coach!

I felt like I was watching a movie last nite. After all that the WVU football program has been through over the last month, it was like a Hollywood ending! Watching the players hoist their interim coach on their shoulders after a HUGE win over a college football power-house like Oklahoma was surreal! What a game and what a story of overcoming adversity! Congratulations to Bill Stewart! He absolutely earned the job and is very deserving. No one else could have stepped in the position facing the adversity that he faced and come out a winner like he did last nite. And what a performance by the defense!! Pat White was a great leader on the field and Noel Devine stepped in and definitely stepped up! I've never been more proud to be a Mountaineer fan! Lets Go!!! Mountaineers!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 3, 2008 at 12:23 PM
Congrats Stew!!! I just hope you can continue the tradition of WVU. You got the big win and now go recruit more and makes us a big power house, so we can light up more couches!!!!!

I couldn't be more proud to be a West Virginian!! There is a brotherhood, a loyalty, a sense of "us against the world" here in WV. So often we are "the butt of the joke", but there is no joke today, only PRIDE. I thank you, Head Coach Bill Stewart for leading by example, with such soft spoken class. You earned this, you deserve this and we are behind you 100%. To Pat White, thank you for returning! To Owen Schmidt, you will be greatly missed. It was awesome to watch you play. Your humble attitude and hard work were a true example to young athletes everywhere. You are a HERO to them for all the right reasons. That is hard to find these days in college and professional sports. We will follow your career, which is destined to be GREAT.

No Doubt he is the "BEST" man for the job. I am honored to be living in the state affiliated with this team and this coach.I am excited about next season!!!!

Im sooo happy for him and the team. They played a wonderful game lastnight! I really hope this shows "Rod" that he can be replaced by someone who RESPECTS West Virginia and will do a MUCH better job of coaching the team! Congrats WVU and Congrats Mr. Stewart!

I LOVED THE GAME LAST NIGHT. I CRIED MY EYES OUT WHEN THEY WON. I LOVE IT FOR ALL THE PLAYERS ESPECIALLY THE SENIORS, AND I ALSO LOVED IT FOR COACH BILL STEWART. WHEN THE PLAYERS HAD A BAD CALL, HE SMILED AND WENT RIGHT ON, HE DIDN'T JUMP DOWN THEIR THROATS. I APPRECIATE HIM FOR THAT BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER YOU CANNOT PLAY A FOOTBALL GAME WITHOUT HAVING SOME BAD CALLS. I SAY THAT RICH ROD WATCHED THE GAME LAST NIGHT AND IF HE HAS ANY KIND OF HEART, I BET HE MISSED THE MOUNTAINEERS AND BEING ON THAT SIDELINE, BUT WE DIDN'T NEED HIM, WE FOUND SOMEBODY BETTER FOR THE JOB WHO SHOWS HE HAS HEART AND IT AIN'T ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.

Congradulations to a Coach & Team that conducted themselves through the last few week as a Class Act. You're good, tough and showed the United States we not just a bunch of crying hillbilly's. Looking forward to next year!

This was such an important announcement to loyal West Virginians, I believe you could have postponed regular viewing for a few minutes and shown this live on Newschannel 3!

Posted by: debbie on Jan 3, 2008 at 11:36 AM
Coach Stewart, you and your wonderful team proved those "know-it-all" sport commentors WRONG!! During the pre-game show all they talked about was OU's quarterback, Bradford, and that he is a great QB and a"true freshman", yea right, a "true freshman for High School!! Did you all see OU's fans? They looked real pitiful. Reminded me of the Georgia(stunned) fans at the WVU-Georgia "fiesta bowl" in 06. Congrats again on a great season. GOD bless you all!

I resent Joe Manchin saying we are a greatful state in regards to the hiring of a WVU football coach. WVU is not the center of the universe. We are talking about a football coach so really Joe Manchin get a grip. I would be greatful if you and your administration had managed to recruit businesses offering good paying jobs to the state or if more people in this state had access to health care. I would be greatful if more young people had the opportunity to attend college and then were able to find a decent paying job in this state. Joe Manchin needs to focus more of his attention on the real business of the state and less of his time involved in WVU football and the affairs of Morgantown.

If anyone deserves the head coaching job a WVU it is Bill Stewart. He kept the team together and kept them motivated and their moral up and I think that the guys really appreciated him taking so much interest in the team and him making them understand that they were worth everything that they proved to be in last night's game. It took a lot of courage on Mr. Stewart's part to try and hold things together in such a trying situation. He's one of a kind and I think that was proven by the way the guy spoke of him and the respect that they have for him. Bill is one coach that's not all about himself but he gives the glory to the teammates and the loyal fans which follow the team. I am proud to say that I am a part of the great state of W.V. and hope that things continue to look up for the WVU football team in the coming years ahead. Go Mountaineers.

I am glad Mr Sewart is going to take the job go mountaineers

Posted by: Herd Fan on Jan 3, 2008 at 11:17 AM
I echo "Danny's" comments. Stewart did a great job last night coaching the team and the players really seemed to be respecting him. Having played sports and worked with athletes over 20 years, when the players like the coach, everything goes better. Kudos to WVU for also showing OU they were wrong about wanting to play a better team in a bowl game. You played like champs. We wish you success except when playing Marshall!!

I am so proud of this Mountaineer football team. They showed what true Mountaineers are made of, no matter where these players of from they have inherited the WV true grit......... Its been a rough past month I know for everyone but your true fans never gave up on you, we knew this team was made of more than just one coach. We knew the talent was there and you could do it and thank goodness you now have that wonderful Head Coach Bill Stewart. The administration finally got it right... We will look for bigger and better things to come. It really nice to know that you guys love us as much as we love you..... Coach Stewart said it right "It was a great night to be a "Mountaineer"..... Thanks so much to each and everyone of you.. You put all the doubts to rest.

Coach Stewart showed class, compassion and true grit last night. I loved how he interacted with his players. He showed them they were the most important component of the game, not the game itself, or the trial they just came through. Pat White said it all when he said they "played as a family". Owen Schmitt gave one heck of a performance and went out on a high note. Congrats WVU and congrats WV citizens, we've proven we are a true force in sports and a class act as well. I want RR to have watched last night in his Mich. home and feel the pain knowing he wasn't needed and the kids did a better job with him gone than when he was there. In fact, the players were more relaxed and in better spirits than I have seen before. They seemed to enjoy the game AND Coach Stewart, who showed them respect, pride in their abilities and anyone could see their devotion for him and their teammates. I guess he brought out the best in those boys and they loved and respected him for it. Again Congrats!!!

AMEN!!!!Last night when our boys took the field,I cried like a baby. When we won,I cried again. We don't need Terry Bowden or anyone else.Coach Stew has the love for the team and the state that our boys deserve. He is the best man for the job!!!!The boys love and respect him.I believe he will stay with WVU.A healing took place in WV last night. One that was much needed.I loved Rich and my heart was broken when he left. Not because he left to better himself, but because of the way it was done. The team deserved better.Football should be about the boys.Last night, our Mountaineers played with heart. When they walked off that field they were met with a genuine smile and hug from a man we have all fell in love with.God Bless the team, school, our beautiful state and Bill Stewart!!!Everything happens for a reason. We saw it last night.I have never been prouder to be from WV!! Congratulations Coach Stew and Mountaineers!!!!!

Congrats to the Mountaineers and Coach Stewart!! I have never seen a coach with more compassion and true love for his team. Way to go and I cannot wait until next season. WVU has shown the country what it means to play West Virginia Football. They have proven that they do not need Rich Rodriguz, they had each other, and Bill Stewart. Bill, I would like to say that I am rooting for yoy 100% and that all WVU fans should support you. Congratulations! Devine, White, SLaton, see you next year! I would like to also say that Owen Schmitt has given the pro scouts another reason to look at him. Again, great job on the win. "LET'S GO MOUNTAINEERS!!" ;)

Great job WVU and The new HEAD COACH, Bill Stewart...You all made the state of WV proud as usual. it still stands in my mind though that OU didn't want to play us in the Bowl Game because we weren't good enough...Hmmmmm, 48-28...Go figure!!! We reap what we sow people...Class act West Virginia!!!

Now this what College Football is all about. If ever a person deserves the head coach Position, Truly it is Coach Stewart, Not only did The Mountaineers Beat Oklahoma They beat Rod at his little game. GOOOOOO Mountaineers. You guys showed the whole world what it is to be a team.

Posted by: Elizabeth on Jan 3, 2008 at 09:02 AM
I was impressed with the game, but more impressed with Coach Stewart's demeanor before, during and after the game. High praise goes to the team, and to the decision makers at WVU for doing the right thing by giving Coach Stewart a chance, he most certainly deserves it! It does my heart good to see a fellow West Virginian placed ahead of so called "big name" coaches and given a chance to make his name known after such a long career as support staff. No matter what the eventual outcome I really believe the people of West Virginia will not be disappointed and Coach Stewart will respect this State and all it's proud inhabitants.

You deserve the head coaching spot, Mr. Stewart!!! That was the most exciting game yet!!! It just goes to show we didn't let a distraction like Rod bring us down, If anything WVU showed him what he's gonna miss next year @ that!!! Congrats!! We did it!!! LETS GO MOUNTAINEERS!!!!!!!!! ;) BTW, Noel you were off the hook lastnigt!!!! Can't wait until next season!!

MY VOTE IS FOR BILL

Posted by: Gary on Jan 3, 2008 at 08:02 AM
Great win for the Mountaineers and coach Stewart. He should without question get the coaching position. He showed more compasion and pleasure for his team in one game than the other guy you know the one who went to Michigan did his complete stay at WVU. Coach Stewart and the Mountaineers made me very proud. They brought honor to the Mountain State. If Coach Stewart would have been coaching the complete season they would probably have gone undefeated and would be playing for the national championship. Thanks for a Great Game and the most entertaining game I've seen this year.

Posted by: Floyd on Jan 3, 2008 at 08:00 AM
Thank you so much to the Mountaineers for representing our state really well last night. You pulled together and showed everyone what WV football is all about. Coach Stewart, thank you and welcome aboard as our new head coach.

NO one needs Rod! Lets go Stewart! Awesome job WVU! I have never been proud of WVU like I am today. You guys really did an excellent job. Overcoming adversity is sometimes hard to do. You guys did it with extreme dignity. Glad Rod wasn't apart of it.

Being a HERD fan, normally, I do not like it when WVU wins. However, last night I found myself being happy for them. I also found myself liking Bill Stewart for the way he presented himself, and the way the players spoke about him. Congratulations Coach Stewart, I wish you continued success...except when playing THE HERD!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 3, 2008 at 06:31 AM
I THINK BILL STEWART DID A GREAT JOB LAST NIGHT COACHING THE BOWL GAME. I JUST HOPE THAT IF BILL STEWART DOES GET THE JOB, HE FINDS REALLY GOOD RECRUITS, WE CAN ALWAYS USE MORE REALLY GOOD PLAYERS.

Posted by: Kathy on Jan 3, 2008 at 06:20 AM
As well he should be! CONGRATS COACH STEWART! HE deserves to be named head coach, he's proven that Unlike the one that just bolted on these kids, Coach Stewart stuck with them, coached them and inspired them through a very very tough time when the coach they HAD trusted, believed in and worshiped walked out and left them cold right before their bowl game Coach Stewart AND these kids showed not only the "previous" coach last night that they don't need HIM to win or even survive, they showed the entire State of WV AND the country. They also showed those doubting "fans" who didn't go to the game because even THEY doubted these kids could beat Oklahoma! Those "fans" also tried to tell the kids they weren't any good by their absence, but those "kids" WERE the adults last night. They kicked OU's backside very soundly AND with class. Something the previous coach NEVER had. Coach Stewart believed in them and he deserves to be the Head Coach! Congrats!

  • Posted By: joeI have worked for companies all over this nation and have had to take drug tests. Why should teachers be exempt from this practice? It is now common to be randomly tested(and I have been) so what makes a teacher any different than a steel worker. I can say proudly that I passed but I have seen those who didn't. They chose to use drugs and lost their jobs I didn't.
  • Posted By: KatyAs a teacher, I have no problem being randomly drug tested...as long as you agree to drug test the parents who enter the doors of my school as well. Most teachers deal with students who are exposed to/use more drugs and alcohol than any of the teachers. If these students or parents who are using drugs (and are not drug tested) enter our schools, the safety of the teachers and students are at risk. Since children spend more time with them, let's randomly drug test PARENTS, too!!!

Where was the media uproar for years that Hamas was rocketing Israel irespective of innocent israelis.. Hamas is actualykilling their own citizens by firing rockets from UN schools and residents. Why does UN allow Hamas to use facilities for attacking Israel, then complain when Israel responds to protect their territory and citizens. Israel targets military targets, respons to from whence rockets or gun fire comes. What would we fire at if Huntington was attacked? Why does the media not put bla,e where balame belongs, and give moral support to the aggreived. What would America do if attacked? to whom would we listen? Russia, Saudi Arabia,Iran?.Media get REAL! Who has given Hamas and the Palestinians millions with which they could buy weapons---American taxpayers money!
  • Posted By: RobertAlthough I feel for the employees that lost their positions at Cabell Huntington Hospital, at least more nurses were hired. I recently had a relative in the cardiac unit at Kings Daughters, in Ashland, and I was told that the nursing staff had been cut back and that no overtime was being given. This seems to be a drastic cut in patient care for a facility that spends thousands advertising that they are in the top 5% of cardiac hospitals in the country. I would be willing to wager that the Cleveland Clinic has not cut hours of those giving patient care.
  • Posted By: BoydIf the state's budget is doing so well, why don't we use some of this money to help towns and cities in the state who are in trouble with their budget, or will this just become another pay raise for politicians?
  • Posted By: RobWhy does everyone have to be so into using the term "racist" and have that kind of attitude. I know what my heritage is and who my ancestors were but you want to know what I consider myself? I AM AN AMERICAN! I was born and raised in this country and that's how I feel it should be. Born here, raised here.....then by God you are an American. Not an African American, not an Asian American etc. etc. You are an AMERICAN!
  • Posted By: ChrisTo Ex-Officer: I agree with you 100% about the pay of police dept and the drug testing. I was formerly involved with the BCPD and had multiple ride alongs with the BCSO. I am probably one of their biggest critics due to having watch some of the bad side of the department for a long time. I wish that I could tell everything that I have seen officers do,which would put most of them behind bars or they'll lose their sheild, But retalliation is bad in our area. To the cops that do their job and do it with the best intentions, I proud of you and don't mean any disrespect. To the ones who I personally watch being more currupt then the "badguys" here, your day will be coming.
  • Posted By: PabloTeachers aren't the only ones underpaid. Law enforcement officers are underpaid also. And I'd like to speak about them. For example, I'm sure any parent would sacrifice their live for thier children. And several may give thier live to save their spouse. A few individuals may even do it for a close friend. But, I only know of 3 types of beings who will sacrifice thier lives for complete strangers; indeed even for people who hate them. The first would be our men and women in our armed forces. The second would be our law enforcement officers. And of course, third would be our Savior, Jesus Christ. Others are killed in the line of their employment, but not in order to save a complete stranger. Everytime a cop puts on his/her uniform, they can be a target for anyone upset about something. Even though it doesn't involve the cop personally, that very cop will give his life to save yours when a problem arises. We need to give our cops not only a wage, but a living wage and a great big THANKS.
  • Posted By: CraigIf what I am hearing is correct that Kanawha County teachers accepted a pay raise in return for submitting to drug testing, and then sued successfully so they do not have to be subject to testing, then why shouldn't we the taxpayers demand they return the raise?
  • Posted By: teresaracist lmao i am one cherokee, german, irish, german, and who knows what else TIRED of hearing of racist comments u are either GOOD OR BAD k no skin color needed just evil or NOT
  • Posted By: Ex-OfficerI agree with Robert 100% I worked in law enforcement and loved the job but try to rise a family on less than 10.00 an hour (out of that pay for your own duty gear and gun). I believe that all public safety workers should be drug tested but i also believe that they should be paid for the job that they do. Not many people understand what a public safty worker goes through. Would you put your life on the line for this kind of pay? Remember the saying that you get what you pay for. I see this in several new officers in my area. Don't get me wrong there are still very good officers in law enforcement. Something really needs to be done about the low pay for these jobs.
  • Posted By: GarlandWhat's the difference between teachers and other workers(coal mineers, bus drivers, state employees, etc.)? Teachers aren't any better are they?
  • Posted By: This is not a comment, but I would like comments on it please. What do you think of Poca High School? Racist or not?
  • Posted By: RobertWe the people, through our own self centeredness and apathy, have allowed our teachers and police officials to be some of the most underpaid people in the United States. We are trusting our childrens education and our public safety to the very people that are some of the most underpaid profesions in the U.S.. If I could change this, I would. However, I do believe that these people should be randomly drug tested. I work in the construction industry and I have no problem being drug tested. I have nothing to hide. I also believe that any person who is intrusted with the safety of others should have nothing to hide. This includes plitical officials up to and including the president.
