We’ve learned of nine more arrests in an abuse investigation at a Carter County nursing home.

Earl Pelfrey, Glada Miller, Glen Wheeler and Nicholas Adams are charged with felony abuse and neglect of an adult.

The other workers charged are all connected with the Community Presence Nursing Home. They include Todd Gribbin, Ira Griffith, Michael Yates, Regina Stevens and Karl King.

State investigators say more arrests are likely.

I would just like to point something out. Now that this is going before the judge many are having their charges dropped completely. Most of the rest are expected to have their charges dropped as well. Before anyone decides to be quick to judge, stop and consider why so many of these cases are being thrown out?

well i think that the company should do background checks of all their potential employees..but i also think that the family members should be more envolved then what they are..anyone knows that it is frustrating taking care of someone in the shape that most of them are in..they have a mind if their own, they are human just like the rest of us, they want to be loved, made to feel special, not to be beat around on and throwed in the bed, so you dont have to mess with them...and to all of you being charged, you know which of you are innocent and which of you are guilty, just remember you will be in a state that you will have to rely on someone to care for you... as the old saying goes,,what comes around goes around..so be prepared..

This is so sad. I cant believe that ppl can be this cruel. This is why i will never put someone that i love and care about into a place like this...

Posted by: In the Dark on Feb 7, 2008 at 11:05 PM
I haven't heard the full story so I can't comment on what went happened. I can tell you however that most people wouldn't work in a place like this because they don't have the guts for what it takes. I have seen 8 and 9 year olds with behavioral and mental challenges knock adults flat when they go into a rage, let alone adults. The strength they must have would be enormous. Its very easy to sit back and comment on IF IT WAS ME I WOULD.. blah, blah blah...... but face it you wouldn't do it in the first place...and most of you are like me you have no idea of what even went on.

my brother in law is one of those accused in this. while I believe that anyone who would abuse someone so vulnerable should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, I do know that this case in particular is not abuse not on my brother in laws case at least. He was helping to restrain a client who was combative. The man was kicking a table that was starting to fall over on him and my brother in law placed his body over the mans feet so that he wouldnt kick the table and knock it over injuring himself or others sitting there. I know he wouldnt hurt a person heck he woudlnt hurt a fly. He has NEVER been in any kind of trouble and has one of the kindest souls of anyone I know. I hope when all is said and done the truth is revealed so that he his wife and children can move on. Truely you should all not point fingers and condem a person without knowing the full story.

You know, one day all of us abusers and neglictors are all going to be locked up then these poor little mentally handicaped children will have noone to take care of them but the people on here bashing us right now, then after they have taken care of them for about a week and see just how poor and helpless the mentally handicapped they really are, you will be handing them right back to us without even saying sorry and expect us to just smile and take the job again.

I HAVE WORKED IN A A FACILITY LIKE CPI FOR ALMOST 6 YEARS NOW, AND IT IS REALLY HARD TO GET STAFF. I THINK THAT IT IS REALLY INCREDABLE THAT PEOPLE WHO WON'T EVEN GO TO WORK WITH THESE PEOPLE WITH SOMETIMES SEVERE MENTAL AND BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS ARE GOING TO PASS JUDGEMENT ON THE ONES WHO WILL. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED THERE, AT LEAST NOT YET, BUT AS SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN REPEATEDLY HIT, SCRATCHED, PUNCHED, AND KICKED BY ONE OF THESE SO- CALLED HELPLESS PEOPLE, AND BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFETY OF THE OTHERS, I UNDERSTAND THAT SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO INTERVENE FOR THE SAFTEY OF ALL. SO IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO WORK WITH THEM YOURSELVES, GET OFF YOU HIGH HORSE AND. IT'S A HARD JOB, AND WE DO THE BEST WE CAN.

Posted by: NO MORE NEGATIVE COMMENTS UNTIL YOU KNOW THE REAL STORY! on Feb 6, 2008 at 07:36 PM
I USED TO BE EMPLOYED BY CPI AND KNOW EACH ONE OF THE PEOPLE BEING CHARGED. I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT ANYONE COULD SPEAK SO NEGATIVELY ABOUT ALL OF THEM. I KNOW AT LEAST 5 OF THEM EXTREMELY WELL AND I KNOW THAT THEY DON'T HAVE IT IN THEIR HEARTS TO HARM ANYONE WITHIN THIS FACILITY. ALL 5 OF THEM WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY DAILY TO LOVE AND CARE FOR THESE INDIVIDUALS AND GIVE THEM THE SENSE OF FAMILY THAT THEY HAVE PROBABLY NEVER FELT BEFORE SINCE BIRTH. STOP POSTING NEGATIVE COMMENTS THAT GROUP ALL OF THEM TOGETHER UNLESS YOU KNOW FOR SURE WHO YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. I KNOW OF AT LEAST 3 THAT HAVE GIVEN EXTRA TIME OFF OF THE CLOCK, TAKEN CLIENTS TO THEIR HOMES, AND HAVE GIVEN CELL PHONE NUMBERS IN CASE THE CLIENTS NEEDED THEM. DON'T BE SO CRUEL THAT YOU PUT THEM ALL IN THE SAME CATEGORY UNLESS YOU KNOW THE DETAILS OF THEIR CHARGES. GOD IS THEIR JUDGE, NOT YOU!!!

I am NOT from the Grayson area and not one of you KNOW me. I worked at the ADT and I know exactly what went on and why the staff are being charged. The majority of the charges are so exaggerated and not in any way, shape, or form considered abuse. We all did our jobs and NO ONE WAS EVER HARMED!! Yes, they were restrained but that was a horrible part of our job that we were expected to perform in order to keep these behavioral individuals from harming themselves or the other 29 individuals around them. The staff have been at times knocked around but that was never our justification for restraining them. We were expected by parents, state guardians, and the state agencies to keep EACH AND EVERY individual safe. If holding someone's arms or legs to keep them from pinching themselves or ripping their skin or kicking tables and the concrete floors is a crime then there must a problem in our judicial system. IF GOD IS TRULY IN YOUR LIVES, THEN YOU SHOULD KNOW IT IS NOT YOUR RIGHT TO JUDGE!

Last year in Feb. my nonverbal austic was placed in Community Presence for Temporary care with behavior treatment. I can give you information about the guy with all the spikes and condition of my grandson's room when I visited. I reported all this about the safety issues when staff wear spikes around there neck, wrist and a belt with spikes in it. His room smelled like bm, the mattress had dried bm on it. Dried bm was found behind the chest. Please contact me. This was all reported 2wks after he was thereThank god he was moved from that home.

They were only doing what they were trained to do and yes it was improperly. I know Todd Gribbin personally theres nooo way he would hurt someone. Isn't Ira Griffith the OWNER'S son!!!!!!!!>?????? who do we report the correct abusers to? I'm serious too.

Posted by: audrey on Feb 5, 2008 at 11:56 PM
when i first read the story i was shocked at who they were letting take care of these poor people. why would community presense hire this type of people ? did they do any background check beforehand?

Posted by: me on Feb 5, 2008 at 11:08 PM
get your facts straight wsaz..this is not a nursing home..it is a residential housing unit for the mentally handicapped..and also residents with behavioral disorders..

Posted by: me on Feb 5, 2008 at 10:45 PM
i have worked with the mentally handicapped for many years..i have been hit..bit ..torn with fingernails..hair pulled out..punched..you name it..it is a difficult job...these pple are very strong and when upset..they are out to hurt whoever gets in their path...im not saying what the worker did were wrong..but till we learn the details..who are we to judge?..i agree the police and dcbs are on a with hunt...but if the police would come when they are needed..then perhaps alot could be avoided..i have seen how the police restrain and control..can you tell me that isnt worse then restraining..tazing a minor that lived in one of cpi's homes...thats humane?...thats ok?..evidently huh? now lets ask ourselves..who is doing the wrong here?

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 5, 2008 at 10:17 PM
i'm glad wsaz gets their ratings from a story that is ruining lives. they don't care, its not their life being ruined. as for the abuse, if these people don't get jail time, its because they don't deserve it. these people were doing their job: trying to protect these clients from doing harm to themselves or others. but, YOU CAN'T TEACH THE IGNORANT. there will be no convincing the public that these people truly are good, kind people because the public does not know what it is like to work with out of control individuals like these workers have.

Posted by: trisha on Feb 5, 2008 at 09:17 PM
LOL. iknow these people and they shouldnt be working in a place like this, who in the world hired them?? whoever did should be charged also, these people are the lowest of scum in grayson!!

Posted by: crystal p on Feb 5, 2008 at 08:33 PM
more like these monster kids are abusing the workers. these are very strong, big teens, mostly. i worked there one week and quit because i was bit, kicked, my hair pulled, bruised all over. these kids parents should be made deal with these brats!! not send them to someone else to be watched!

Posted by: Leah on Feb 5, 2008 at 08:04 PM
Just a comment on the story you ran about the nursing home in Grayson called Community Presence, first of all this is not a old persons nursing home. It is homes for very severly retarded & some violent kids, whose parents and families cannot take care of them because of their handicap. As for the investigation I do not know anything about this. What I do know is one of the people who worked there that is being charged. I have known this person the entire time he worked there and I can tell you that you could not find a more kindhearted, loving person who did not only care for these kids but was dedicated to them. It takes a special kind of person to care for these kids and he was one of these people.

people, this is not people, this is not a nursing home for old aged.it is a home for the mentially impaired and disabled.they might be 20 yrs.old but have the mind of a child.also most are very violent and hard to control that people, these are not old people.they are mentally impaired and most are very violent and hard to control.that's why they're there.they have been placed there by family because they can not care for them.we should commend these workers for their caring.not punish them for doing their job the best they know how. i have also spent time in a nursing home these workers do not deserve the bum rap they get either.don't know what disabled people like me would do without them. so please don't comment on things you know very little about.again these workers had a very tough job.try it sometime then let us here from you.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 5, 2008 at 07:51 PM
Yea its a daycare facilitiy for the mentally handicaped. There are no nurses or medical professionals at the center in question, all lay workers who have been trained through the facility! Report the truth!

Posted by: anonymous on Feb 5, 2008 at 07:27 PM
who was arrested before these nine?

Posted by: vdub on Feb 5, 2008 at 07:08 PM
First of all its not a nursing home it was a day care center for the mentally disabled. I too know many of the residents from the facility. I also know some of the employees who were arrested. Perosnally I know that one that was arrested loved the residents so much. He would never hurt anyone on purpose. He has had bake sales with his own money to help the residents take various trips. Maybe if the police officers and other officials were put in the position as these employes then maybe they would understand how violent many of these people get. Not to say that everyone is perfect but atlest they didnt use a tazer gun on one of the residents like someone from the police department did to control the resident. So many things are incorrect about what has been said. My sencere prayers go out to the family of the residents and to the former employes who were only doing what they were told by the directors, this is were the cover up is.

Posted by: THIS IS NOT A NURSING HOME!!! on Feb 5, 2008 at 07:01 PM
First off, this was NOT a nursing home MORONS (the media)!!! This is a facility that took care of mostly YOUNG (the oldest being 50) individuals with varying levels of MRDD. Some of these individuals have behavioral issues which required them to be restrained to protect them and the other 29 other individuals with mental retardation who would not be aware that they were about to be beaten by their peer. The staff did not abuse these individuals!!! Any facility that cares for individuals with Mental Retardation takes the risk that at any time, any of them could become violent towards others (INCLUDING THEIR HELPLESS PEERS). The media is not being wholly truthful and doesn't seem too interested in reporting the truths behind this story. Before you post your comments, you should truly find out the truth. AGAIN, THIS IS NOT A NURSING HOME. EVER HEARD OF PATHWAYS? Same concept. The people being arrested are being arrested for doing what they were expected to do by CPI and guardians!

Posted by: me on Feb 5, 2008 at 06:52 PM
community presence is NOT a nursing home.its a facility that offers housing and assistance to mrdd/abused/ behavioral children and adults!if you are going to report this WSAZ report the facts !!!!!!!

I use to work for CPI. Let me correct the story. CPI is NOT a nursing home. It is a collection of community-based staffed residences for persons with mental retardation and/or developmental disabilities. I do not have the details of what these or others did. It has been several years since I worked there. I am saddened by what has happened to Mike P. (the young man who died) and any of the residents who were abused. I am not shocked because I saw an agency with real potential begin to go downhill and I left because I did not want something like this to occur while I was associated with CPI. The administration is to blame for all of this. Good employees either left or were chased away. The people who ran the agency were not qualified and operated their own agendas. It is a sad time and probably the death of a company that had a lot of promise!

Posted by: sue on Feb 5, 2008 at 11:03 AM
i can't speak for all of them but Karl gave his life to care for these mentally impaired, very violent kids.he was a favorite among them.he don't derseve this i don't believe the public understands this situtation.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 5, 2008 at 10:59 AM
the nine pepole that has been arrested, are good hard working people.this is just one side ,it will all come out in the end and everyone will see that at no time was anyone abused .the staff involved loved the residents and still do, i can only speek for the staff that worked the ADT.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 5, 2008 at 10:04 AM
Hey folks, get your facts straight. This is not a nursing home it is a group home for the mentally handicapped/mentally ill. They are not sick and elderly most are in their teens and twenties. WSAZ please stop misrepesenting the facts. You are trying to make it sound like these workers are abusing the elderly and sick. They had to restrain a violent adult who could not take anymore medication. Their parents have had to place them in these homes because if they stayed home, the parents would end up being accused of abuse. There is only so much you can do with a mentally handicapped/psychotic person. Sometimes taking them to the floor and restraining them for awhile will calm them down. Mental hospitals do it, the police do it and anyone who doesn't want their block knocked off would do the same thing. Ask the Grasyon Police how they treat the handicapped when they are called in. Odd that they are arresting workers for doing the same thing that they have done.

Posted by: Come on! on Feb 5, 2008 at 09:53 AM
Ok, once again, here we go, slander! Hasn't it hit anyone that there were so many arrest? Why were they not arrested along time ago? Just now after all this bull crap, sounds to me like the cops are just trying to get info and if the staff does not give them "what they want to hear" then they throw them in jail for 24 hrs without cause because they can. If you were not there then you do not know, so shut up!

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 5, 2008 at 09:48 AM
Why are you posting ONLY the negative comments? I know that several people have posted positive comments and they are not posted. What gives? I thought we still had freedom of speech or is it freedom of speech according to the news media.

Posted by: kay on Feb 5, 2008 at 09:45 AM
Have you ever been to a group home?Have you ever been involved with some of these clients. I'm talking about the adults who are not only mentally handicapped but mentally ill. This means that they do not always use their best judgement and can beome extremely violent at any given time. Some of these clients are very large people. Consider a 6'4" 250 20 year old male. When he turns violent, he not only hurts himself, he hurts anyone in his vicinity. These so called SICK workers were arrested for restraining a violent client. Have any of you ever been attacked by a psychotic person who hears voices telling him to hurt people. Well I have and I ended up at Kings Daughter Medical Center. He had not a scratch. DMR, DCBS and the police were supposed to be a support sytem for the clients and workers. Now they are on a witch hunt to keep from being investigated themselves. If any of you have ever dealt DCBS, you know how they work. How many parents are arrested for abuse. None for restraint.

Posted by: Steve on Feb 5, 2008 at 07:10 AM
As you all know the court system in the United States will do nothing to these people...They let Child Abusers run the streets and tell them not to do it again and they will do the same to these people.Granted they should be abused as they did to this person but it will NOT happen in and more than likely they will not even get jail time out of it...

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 5, 2008 at 03:42 AM
abuse has always been in nursing homes.it will never change because of the pay rate, which leads to the "type" of people that are hired...(cna's) im sorry, but if family would take care of family, this wouldn't be an issue in the first place. i worked in nursing homes for 10 years and i would NEVER put my parents, children, in-laws... in a nursing home!!!!! i say lock these people up in a facility and abuse them for the rest of their pathetic little low life lives!

Posted by: Me on Feb 5, 2008 at 12:11 AM
I can only hope that each and every one of these low lifes has to endure every bit of pain and problems as they inflicted on their victims. They are less than human to treat people like that.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 4, 2008 at 11:49 PM
I am glad that the police are finally getting these people away from the residents. I know one of the residents there and he is a sweet young man. A couple has taken him under their wing and showed him a world that does not mistreat him. Since the state believes that CPI is better for him, he is constantly mistreated. The workers will not let him keep things that he recieves from Christmas or his birthday that anyone gives him. It is about time that the state of Kentucky wake up and get involved. If their are couples, such as the one mentioned above, who are willing to take them in and treat them with dignity and respect why not let them adopt this young man. Apparently, Kentucky believes that this young man should stay at CPI. It is hard to tell what kind of abuse that him or any of the other residents have been subjected too. Please pray for the residents, they need our prayers the most since very few people really care about them. If I had room I would bring the young man to my home.

I worked in a nursing home for some time, and can't comprehend why people would abuse the elderly when they do nothing and are as nice as possible! This makes me sick to my stomach and i hope that these people that get arrested will serve serious time for their actions and hopefully this nursing home that this abuse occurred can regain its prestige and move on with their business and put all this behind them.
