Huckabee Named Winner in WV GOP Convention
Mike Huckabee won the first contest declared on Super Tuesday. However, WSAZ has learned that Huckabee won't get all of the 18 delegates awarded in West Virginia today. Updated with comments from Huckabee about the alleged "backroom dealing."

Mike Huckabee did an interview with CNN's Campbell Brown Tuesday night and she asked him about the backroom deals that took place during the WV GOP Convention. Huckabee denied any deals, despite admissions from the McCain ground campaign in West Virginia that it sent its votes over to Huckabee.

Huckabee said, “I have not talked to Senator McCain or people on his staff about West Virginia. You know, every time we win something, somebody tries to figure out a way to explain it away. Truth is people voted for me. They had a chance to vote for somebody else. And when they didn’t vote – when their candidate -- either John McCain or Ron Paul didn’t get the votes on the first ballot and they had to pick somebody else, they picked me. It’s as simple as that. I think it shows that when this party wants to come together, it looks to somebody they know can carry the message. People in WV believed I can do it. Yesterday, Mitt Romney was saying don’t be a whiner. Yesterday, he was against whining. Today, he’s for whining. So I think we just need to say we won WV and he’ll just have to deal with it.”

A WSAZ photojournalist also recorded video of McCain staffers holding signs to tell their delegates to vote for Huckabee.

Mike Huckabee came away with the win in West Virginia Tuesday, but had to make a deal with his opponents to get there. After one round of voting, Huckabee was in second place. Mitt Romney was in first place in West Virginia. During the intermission, WSAZ has learned that both the campaigns of John McCain and Ron Paul agreed to steer their delegates to Huckabee.

For McCain, it was a chance to stop Mitt Romney from getting a much needed win in the first Super Tuesday announcement. Romney is McCain's closest opponent in many national polls. (In fact, we found some McCain staffers holding signs to tell their delegates to vote Huckabee in the second round. They did NOT like our cameras getting pictures of them doing this by the way.)

WSAZ has learned that Huckabee will give three of his 18 delegates to the Ron Paul campaign in exchange for the support in West Virginia.

"We struck a deal with the Huckabee people. They came to us and dealt with us honorably and with respect. And so we told them that if Dr. Paul didn't make it through the first round, that we would go for their man. They pledged us three delegates to the republican national convention," Edward Burgess, Paul campaign spokesman, told WSAZ.

Romney's campaign was not happy with this development as you can imagine. At the end of the convention, the Romney camp tried to call for a roll call vote of delegates, but the chairman would not allow that.

One unidentified Romney staffer told WSAZ, "it took three candidates together to beat him."

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Mike Huckabee won the first contest declared on Super Tuesday, picking up all 18 national delegates awarded at West Virginia's state GOP convention.

Huckabee bested Mitt Romney, who entered the Mountain State event with the largest bloc of pledged convention-goers. Both men and Ron Paul made in-person appeals to the more than 1,100 convention delegates attending Tuesday's convention.

But the former Arkansas governor beat his Massachusetts counterpart after delegates for John McCain defected to his side.

The first round of voting at the state convention produced no winner, but eliminated Paul after his fourth-place finish.

The results are the first from the 21 states with GOP primaries or caucuses Tuesday.

The final vote is in on the West Virginia Republican Convention -- and Mike Huckabee has been named the winner. It will be made official in 5 minutes.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia's GOP convention failed to select a winner during a first round of voting today.

The voting followed personal appeals by presidential candidates Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul for the 18 seats up for grabs to the national nominating convention.

Paul was eliminated from the next round of balloting, after a fourth-place finish among the 1,133 participating delegates. Romney attracted 41 percent of the votes, followed by Huckabee with 33 percent.

John McCain, who is stumping elsewhere today, reached the second round with 15 percent. Paul had 10 percent.

During his speech to convention participants, Romney promised to tackle Social Security, excessive federal spending and health care access.

Huckabee cast illegal immigration as one example of what ails Washington, while also declaring that the nation's tax system is beyond fixing.

Paul pledged to stick to a strict constitutional view of the president's fiscal, foreign policy and military powers. He also echoed his opposition to the Iraq war.

West Virginia is one of 21 states with GOP primaries or caucuses today.

Dave, Not all of Wayne County voted for Huckabee at the convention. Five of the delegates voted for Romney.

When comparing several economic indicators over the last 16 years, the ecomony has remained on the incline. The GDP has shown steady growth and umemployment have remained around 4.7 to 5.0 percent. We yet to have one reported down quarter. As for the war on terror, Clinton did nothing after the first attack on WTC, cut budget to CIA and declared Hussein a threat to our national security in 1998. Tony Blair also declared Hussein a threat to world security in 1992. Iran declared U.S. an enemy in 1978, Hussein also decalared U.S. an enemy in 1998.

  • Posted By: Jim: Question for all are you happy with the health care system the US has and the prices you are charged for services.I have a 90/10 plan where I work with a $300 annual deductible and a $20 co-pay for office visits which is a pretty good deal.Last year they added a well care benefit which covers yearly physicals,pap smears,mammograms and prostrate exams.Here is the part that I can not understand last year without the well care benefit my insurance was billed $614 which they paid for my wifes pap smear and mammogram this year the same procedure was only billed at $148 because it is all they would allow so where did the other $466 go last year.It really doesn't matter to me because I didnt have to pay but the idea that my children do not have insurance really bugs me thinking that the amount that gets wasted and over charged could be used to cover people that are not covered and can not get treatment that is needed without money up front that they may not have.Let me know what you think

The entire region went into slavery and poverty. When confronted with the choice of living in an Uncle Ho-inspired paradise or boarding a rickety boat and heading to sea, thousands went to sea, and many tragically died. Who knows what kind of a prosperous, free, thriving society Vietnam might be today, if the Left had supported the US soldier instead of spitting on them; perhaps the equal of S. Korea, or Japan, or Germany. Hats off to you WW2 vets too, for freeing the Philippines from imperial Japan. Every free breath we breathe we owe to US service personnel; GBU; GBA.

Would her plan be to just label everyone into a group of one size fits all for diseases, disabilities or sickness.

As for Sarah, I think she should use a teleprompter, even when she goes out to speak to 12 year olds. It would be especially helpful when she campaigns in all 57 states speaking to all the "Corpse-men" in the audience. You do not listen to Rush, you get your information second hand. I do listen; I heard him announce to all that he was going to use the word, it is common for him, he quoted Harry Reid as well, to illustrate that once again, a liberal democrat slanders, just like AlGore's "Extra Chromosome" remark; Obama's Special Olympics joke, etc...

Disabled do you think that will work,maybe special.People should think before they jump on some band wagon just to make noise,how much good will it do if they do away with all labels and consider everyone equal with no special treatment or funding for anything not considered the norm.God forbid they stop all research and funding because they dont know how to write it up for fear of not being political correct and hurting someones feelings.The R word is used in 1000's of bills and documents for funding and research so how do the politicans hope to make this work without it.Seems as good of way as any to waste more tax dollars doing a study for 3 or 4 yrs to figure this out and you can bet someone will come up with that idea also

This is something that should apply to all citizens of Belle. I noticed a big job down on Gardner Ave. being done at the old Maytag place and I think they should have to have a work permit too. You have to know the heartbreak of seeing your child suffer so many things through no fault of his own to understand. Sometimes you are the only advocate they have and it is still not enough. They are made fun of, but bless their hearts, they don't understand it and smile through it all. They take what life throws at them and go right on loving everyone. If I did not fight for him, he would not be here. I guess it becomes a habit of fighting for them and sometimes the pain gets so great we jump on a fly. But I would not trade him for a million healthy children. Again, I am sorry. I am having a tough time seeing him suffer and am overly sensitive right now. I will take a break from the yell. What do you want, one a day, one per week, etc...when things get really fired up, the Yell is a great feature and we could have a roaring debate on here, which I think is great, good for you guys too, but it would have to be regularly updated and sometimes I know that is apparently difficult. Since there seems to be an overwhelming liberal to conservative ratio on here, and you run about 10 liberal posts to every conservative, lets even it out. Scroll down the page-we have Labels, Morons, Carveon, Anon, Jam, Anon, Jim, Roane Co, etc... for example, I have sent in three posts asking a simple question, why did the National Downs Syndrome Society publish a letter to Rahm Emmanuel about his comments; why did a father of a child with Downs take offense; why did Sarah Palin, mother of a child with Downs, take offense??? It is painful, I have told you that and still you continue. My child is one of the sunniest parts of my life and I have NEVER associated that word to him and I resent those who do. And they are not a "Down's child". They are children who happen to have Down Syndrome. I have agreed with you on most topics that are real issues. But I have basically ignored your "people" attacks. The difference is, Cheney's intent was not to take a group of people who could not defend themselves, (Downs Syndrome, "R" folks) disparage them, and use them to insult folks who can, as was quite ably demonstrated by the various reactions of WV. Emmanuel's true feelings about defenseless people came out as an insult toward his liberal pals. Granted, he apologized, but so did Cheney. Speaking of, I read where a father of a Downs Syndrome child was offended by Emmanuel's comments, he, as a father, apparently applied Rahm's words towards all who face challenges; contacted Sarah Palin, mother of a Downs child, who publicly excoriated Rahm; the National Downs Syndrome Society published a public letter to Emmanuel, (Why?) voicing their offense to his comments; what I don't understand is, why is anybody upset at anyone besides Rahm Emmanuel in this entire episode?

Does anyone see the irony here? Liberals are the ones in America who make racist comments, pick on the helpless, etc...and apparently Obama and Co. don't think much of YOU liberals either.

However, neither had anything to do with Down Syndrome and I am very offended by the comparison. If S.Palin made a link to that comment with her child, she either has not come to terms with her child's uniqueness or using him as a political pawn and it is sad either way. It is my understanding the word used ended with "ed", not an "S" so was not name calling, however ugly it was. To link it to Down Syndrome is wrong! A child with Down Syndrome may be slower in academics than their peers, but may excel in other areas, and always excel in the area of love. Mine can do many things his older "normal" sibling cannot do. We can learn a lot from these special children. I recommend you get to know some. But please leave them out of this political fray! This kind of politics needs to stop. Keep with the REAL issues that are destroying our country and stop with the mud slinging. Words will not bring our country down. Foolishness will.

The comments were made last August and Sarah Palin called him on his incredible rudeness and forced an apology. What's up? Do you guys protect this bunch now too? IF it is an oversight, and you have simply missed my THREE posts, apologies in advance. Get with it, it is an incredible wimp who censors comments.

I say ban them from a couple of games, or do like they did at the football games, and move them to the upper deck. Dont let them close to the players or coaches. But, we all know WSAZ is jumping all over this because of the"rivalry" with good old MU. When the Mountaineers came to H-town a couple of years ago, The so called "F-Bomb was plastered all up and down 6th and 7th Ave. on white sheets with Big Green Letters. So, just remember, there are students and fans with bad language and bad behavior at all universities. This is not an isolated incident that happens only in Morgantown. I am sad that I went to watch my favorite college team play and have been dubbed a bad fan with what happened out of a few students. Be fair WSAZ!!

If students can not behave themselves they should be banned from the game. Also the Governor should apologize to the other team, the people who watched the game and to all West Virginians for these students actions. First off. The cars do not just accelerate on their own. Stop being dumb. Just as Toyota claimed that the accelerator MAY or may not return to the idle position when you take your foot off of the pedal. But the way people like Vanessa that clearly made up her story just to get on the news. All I ask is that people please get the facts before making your final assumptions. I own a Toyota just as well and will continue to own one until the day I die, because every car has its small problem and I have found that Toyota fixes those problems and hides nothing. When the students decide to grow up and act their age, maybe they could be moved back. I think the way these students act, it may even be useful to ban them from games for a while.

After all is investigated, it would not surprise me if all the problems boil down to an issue with computer chips. In 1984, I had new a 6 cyl. Ford Mustang. One day after starting the car, letting it warm up and shifting from park to drive, the car took off! My foot was not on the gas! I had to put both feet and all my weight on the brake to control it. The tires were spinning and smoking right there in the driveway! This lasted for a minute or so, then the RPM's decreased and I was able to shift the car back to park and promptly called the dealership. They fixed it & said it was a bad computer chip. Once fixed, I never had any more problems, but that was certainly scary and I had the tire marks to prove it. This again, was in 1984. 2010 is probably no different. I wish they still made cars that the average Joe could work on - sans computer chips. I hope they solve the Toyota mystery issue soon.

Its coming if we don’t pull together as Americans, pull together as one. If we keep letting the govt. create the divide (and there is a division) we are in trouble. All that person has done is brought disgrace on the team and the university by doing something like this. Espn will have a field day with what happened. No wonder the basketball team and football team is not televised more with the way the student section acts. Either grow up or go home.

Even after seeing the pictures and making an effort to aquaint myself with the island topography, I do not understand why there is no better control. It would be good if someone could tell the American public who have been generous exactly what progress has been made and what progress we will see in the coming weeks & months.
