A major drug bust ended with one man in jail, several family members under investigation and detectives worried about a deadly trend.

We've heard a lot about heroin in Huntington and now it's making its way west. The evidence room at the Scioto County Sheriff's Department is packed with pot.

"It's a good hit. It’s a good hit. It’s taking some off the streets. It’s taking a lot off the streets," Scioto County Sheriff's Department Captain David Hall said.

It was a major bust worth $80,000 in marijuana. Deputies say Merle Montgomery was growing it in the basement of his Lucasville home.

Detectives say this bust was about more than just marijuana, though. Merle's son, David Montgomery, Sr. was arrested nearby in Lucasville charged with having heroin with 31 packets of the deadly drug that's becoming more and more popular.

"In the last two months, we've seen a lot of heroin influx into the Columbus area starting to hit our county," Hall said.

Captain Hall says Scioto County falls along the heroin highway, stretching from Columbus to Huntington where just a week ago, the city experienced its 13th overdose in just six months. Wandrica Matthews' own four-year-old son found her body.

"I know recently we've seen an increase in the heroin complains we've received and the subsequent arrests from the investigations," Huntington Police Department Chief Skip Holbrook said.

The fear in Scioto County is that heroin is becoming the drug of choice and causing more crime.
