UPDATE SATURDAY @ 9:43 PM
WSAZ Just talked to Stephanie Loop. She is home from the hospital and says she is feeling a little bit better.

UPDATE SATURDAY @ 4:30PM
The hospital is no longer releasing Christi Layne's condition. We do know that Friday she was recovering after surgery. Stephanie Loop's family tells NewsChannel 3 her injuries are not life-threatening.

UPDATE FRIDAY @ 9:30 PM
While police are still sorting out just what happened in the Portsmouth standoff Thursday, two assault victims continue to recover in two hospitals.

The police chief told WSAZ at about noon Friday that stabbing victim Stephanie Loop was in critical but stable condition at a Columbus hospital -- and family members of Note Dame Elementary teacher Christi Layne say the 53 year old is out of surgery and her many injuries are not life threatening.

Christi Layne's brother-in-law, David Piatt, told WSAZ that Christi was stabbed by estranged husband Mike Layne 14 times in front of her fifth grade class.

Piatt said Christi was also shot at in the classroom three times and hit once with a wound to her cheek.

Court records show Christi Layne, in the process of a divorce, feared for her life when she took out a domestic protective order against he husband the day after Christmas he says when Mike Layne entered the classroom, Christi thought at first, he was just there to argue, but then she tried to protect herself second and her students first.

Police said the Laynes and Stephanie Loop were involved in some sort of love and hate triangle, but family and friends say a very troubled Mike Layne had lost touch with reality.

We also learned today that Mike Lane had troubles with pills and depression.

UPDATE FRIDAY @ 11:50 AM
Portsmouth Police now say Michael Layne attacked his girlfriend, Stephanie Loop, then his estranged wife Christi Layne in front of her fifth grade class before returning to his home and taking his own life. Police say Michael Layne may have taken his own life, possibly as early as 9:30 Thursday morning, after an exchange of gunfire with police at his house.

Police described Stephanie Loop as Michael Layne's "girlfriend". Loop is 22. Michael Layne was 56. Stephanie Loop is in critical but stable condition in a Columbus hospital, according to police.

A relative of Christi Layne tells WSAZ that Layne is recovering from her wounds and is in stable condition at a Huntington hospital. Layne was repeatedly stabbed then shot by her estranged husband.

UPDATE FRIDAY @ 9:44 AM
From the Associated Press:

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (AP) - They've canceled classes today at the school in southern Ohio where a teacher's estranged husband stabbed her in front of her fifth grade class yesterday.

Administrators at Notre Dame Elementary in Portsmouth say they'll have counselors on hand for the students when the school reopens next week. None of the children were hurt.

The teacher's lawyer tells The Columbus Dispatch that Christi Layne is doing fine after surgery.

Police say her husband William Michael Lane was the attacker. He was found dead hours later when officers entered his home.

Investigators also believe the stabbing of another woman in Portsmouth yesterday is connected.

Last night, an overflow crowd jammed a local Catholic Church for a prayer service.

SITUATION OVERVIEW
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The man who police say stabbed and possibly shot his wife while she was teaching at a school in Portsmouth, Ohio, has been found dead after a standoff with police.

The incident happened at Notre Dame Elementary School at about 9am Thursday morning.

Portsmouth Police tell WSAZ that Michael Layne stabbed his estranged wife, Christi Layne, inside a classroom at the school while students were in the room. No students were injured in the incident. The Ohio Associated Press is reporting that police are still investigating whether or not Mrs. Layne was shot during the scuffle. Police say there was a shot fired, but they are not sure at this point if it struck Mrs. Layne.

Christi is reported to be in critical condition at Cabell-Huntington Hospital in Huntington, WV.

Police surrounded a house on Argonne Road in Portsmouth where the Layne barricaded himself inside. Officers were able to communicate with him early in the standoff situation, but found him dead inside the house at about 1:30pm.

Police say Layne shot and killed himself.

A stabbing victim from an earlier incident in Portsmouth is in a Columbus hospital in critical condition. Police believe the two incidents may be related.

Thursday night, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland issued the following statement.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic events that took place today in Portsmouth. My thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this terrible incident,” Ohio Governor Ted Strickland said. “I want to thank members of local law enforcement, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and all other emergency personnel for their hard work in responding to this very difficult situation.”

Details from 3pm Press Conference
Police say they heard gunshots when they got on the scene on Argonne Road. They tried to negotiate with the suspect for an hour and a half, they figured out the suspect was dead. They say he shot himself.

Police say the suspect is legally known as William Michael Layne, commonly known as Mike Layne. He was 46 years old. Police say they had a domestic situation at this home about two weeks ago.

Police say the first victim -- from the stabbing -- is Stephanie Loop. The second victim is Christie Layne. She is the teacher at Notre Dame Elementary School. Police say both are critical but stable condition.

Police say the relationship between Stephanie Loop and the Laynes is undetermined.

Police say Mike Layne was on disability from his job with the city of Portsmouth.

Police are not releasing the names of the suspect or victims at this time.

The suspect had a previous domestic violence charge against him and there was a restraining order in effect between the suspect and one of the victims.

A school spokesperson says the school immediately went into lockdown. Police say the lockdown lasted about two hours.

There will be a prayer Service tonight at St. Mary's at 7pm. There is no school tomorrow for Notre Dame Elementary, but counseling will be available tomorrow.

Update at 11:52

We wonder why these terrible acts are happening in our schools. We let them take out GOD and the Ten Commandments, prayer and the Pledge. Hum, Sounds like we need to invite GOD back in and teach kids their is more to life than Nintendo, and material things. One much bigger, the LORD, needs to be taught. May GOD watch over Notre Dame and their recovery..This is and will always be a terrific school. I hope the teacher is doing better. Love and prayers. Lewis County Mother

NDE parent: So very happy to hear the door problem has been solved. Thank God!To address your statement about the lockdown. Yes, it was good that they locked down the school and I commend the speed at which they did this, but again the issue is that a man with weapons got into your school. The lockdown should never have been necessary. That is my point. I have seen the video, he jiggled one door and then walked right in the other door. No one stopped him. NO ONE. That is NOT protection, that is an open door policy. I agree that no child is 100% safe anywhere anymore, but I would hope that NDE has improved the safety of their children substantially. You're right this could have happened at any school, where there's a will there's a way. But lets deter these criminals anyway we can, it sounds like you all have started to tighten up the front lines on that issue. Good for you, good for the kids, good for the staff of NDE! My prayers are with you all. Amen

In response to Greenup County, as a parent of 2 children @ NDE the door problem has been solved! That is what we NDE parents are doing to ensure our children's safety. As for the students being on Lockdown after the shots, what do you want the administration to do? Let the students roam freely throughout the building during this crisis? All the students were locked down inside of their classrooms away from windows! I believe that our children are as safe as any child could be out of their parents sight. This tragedy could have happened in ANY school. The fact remains that our children are never 100% safe ANYWHERE!! That is just the world we live in sadly! I am very thankful to the NDE teachers/staff, and the local law enforcement for keeping my children safe.

Posted by: ND Supporter on Feb 15, 2008 at 01:36 PM
The doors at NDE and NDHS are locked at all times. The doors cannot be opened from the outside. The doors will only open from the inside if someone pushes a button that is located higher than a child can reach. Because of fire saftey codes, ND was told to install a sensor that would open the door for fifteen seconds should a child need to get out in an emergency. I do not agree with this change. I think it would make more sense for the locks to be linked to the fire alarm system. If the fire alarm goes off, the doors automatically unlock. Unfortunately, I think it has come time for schools to consider using bullet-proof glass on all first floor windows and doors. The cost would be high, but the benefits and peace of mind would be worth it. Funding needs to be made available for ALL schools, not just public ones. Those are my suggestions, for what they are worth. Until someone in our government steps forward to make it a priority, nothing will change. We cannot make $$ magically appear.

Posted by: Protect Schools on Feb 13, 2008 at 10:31 AM
If we can spend over 15 million dollars to protect one Government Official to make a needless visit Iraq. Why can't we hire security guards for schools? Medal detectors and entry points. In this case didn't the school know about the husband? Why would he be granted access inside the school? Why would entering a school be any different that getting in a federal building or airplane or a courthouse? How many shootups do you hear about on planes of federal buildings?

Hey, Any new update on the condition of the teacher would be nice. It is hard to stay in touch when living out of town. Thanks for your coverage to date.

Posted by: Greenup County on Feb 12, 2008 at 10:06 PM
In response to Informed Student: Thank you very much for the information on how the shooter got into the school. I now understand the problems faced by NDE. Saying that the school was put on lockdown within seconds of the shots is like saying that they pulled the bullet out of a victim within seconds of being shot. It doesn't change the fact that an injury occured and it doesn't fix the problem. The shooter DID get into the school and he DID injure Mrs. Layne, you can't change that by locking down the school after the fact. Instead they could have locked the shooter in with the students making a bad situation worse. The issue here is how could they have prevented the problem and what are they going to do. I am so tired of the Portsmouth attitude of listing reasons why they can't do something. I want to hear some chatter about what they CAN do, how can the parents help to fix this problem. What are you NDE parents going to do to ensure the safety of your children from now on?

Posted by: Greenup County on Feb 12, 2008 at 09:36 PM
In response to ND Supporter: All I am saying is that if I felt strongly about spending money to send my children to a private school for most of their day I certainly would insist that my child be safe while there. Even if it meant that the parents had to volunteer to guard the doors, taking names and when needed contacting the office to verify that someone has legitimate business there. I would not feel comfortable dropping off my children to a building where it is so easy for anyone to enter. Apparently all you have to do now is wait for a child to go to the bathroom and you are in. What about doors that only open from the inside? I'm just saying that I would rather my children be safe and have a chance at growing up than have them in a school where there are very few safeguards to protect them. The bottom line is they were NOT protected on that day. Now stop telling me why you can't protect your children and instead tell me what you are going to do to ensure their safety now.

Posted by: ND Supporter on Feb 12, 2008 at 10:53 AM
Those who are criticizing ND and its security system need to wake up. Where do you suggest we get the funding it will take to purchase all this new "up-to-date" equipment? We do the absolute best we can to protect our children with the little funds we have. Many think that being a "private" school means being a wealthy school. That is just not the case. Yes, it would be wonderful to be able to have a system where all visitors are buzzed right into the main office. Unfortunately, our school building is old and the layout does not make that possible. Our buzzer system has worked very well in the past. Maybe fire codes need to be changed or modified to prevent this situation from happening again, seeing as that is how the shooter was able to gain access in the first place. Stop pointing fingers at people when you don't know the whole story. Maybe you have a few hundred thousand dollars to spare for ND and Portsmouth for all these updates you suggest.

Posted by: Informed Student on Feb 12, 2008 at 10:35 AM
I just wanted to let everyone know exactly how Mr. Layne got in. A little while ago NDE was scolded for having doors that are always locked. You had to buzz the office to be allowed entrance, and you had to hit a button to unlock the door in order to leave the school building. This was a fire violation, so a sensor was installed. The sensor, when triggered, unlocks the door for fifteen seconds, to allow a child to run out of the building with no obstacles in case of a fire. Someone triggered the sensor (likely on the way to the bathroom), and Mr. Layne got in on the 13th second. The Elementary was on lockdown within SECONDS of the shots being fired.

Posted by: Teacher on Feb 12, 2008 at 08:33 AM
I am making a comment to Greenup County's post on Feb. 11 about the shooter never being able to get into the school. I agree with some of the things you say, however most schools, public and private, have their main entrance doors open for parents to enter and other visitors such as deliveries, etc. We shouldn't judge ND about the shooter getting in, that could happen anywhere. What we should be talking about is how to not let this happen again. I think that most of the newer schools are having "buzzer systems" and that is probably what ND should check into having. Praise needs to go out though to the teachers and other staff members that no one else was hurt, this could have been a much more devastating incident than it was. Mrs. Layne and Mrs. Loop along with the children in that classroom will have to live with these horrible memories for the rest of their lives. We all need to pray for them and their families and come together as a community and stop this from ever happening.

Finally, my heartfelt prayers go out to Christi and Stepanie and their families. God bless them and keep them safe and well. To all the students at NDE I wish recovery and forgetfulness, that they may never think of this horrible day again. Portsmouth, get out there and fix the mess you call a city and make it somewhere you can all be proud of. Sweep the streets, plant some trees, clean up the parks and make them somewhere that people want to come to again. Stop looking away from crime and look it square in the face and ban it from your community. Amen

I am very glad to hear the women involved are doing good. My hats off to the teacher for protecting the children first. I really appreciate that. The issue of our childrens safety troubles me. If we had security guards in our schools, like we do our factories, and shopping centers, I would feel more at ease. And what about metal detectors? it is sad to see more security at mom and pop stores than the place you send you children with better hope for the future. I would like to see my tax dollars go toward better security.

Posted by: Greenup County on Feb 12, 2008 at 12:55 AM
Mr. Layne should have never gotten into that school. Cameras and buzzers? Are we in the 1950s? Do the parents of NDE realize that they are paying good money for inferior and outdated security. You're paying for this! And they have only had that security for 1 1/2 years. It was outdated when it was utilized. Why bother putting it in? At all schools in Greenup County, no matter how well they know you, you cannot get into the school without going through procedures. All doors are locked when the children are there. You have one door to go through and you must get buzzed in there. At that time you enter the office and show ID then you sign a sheet stating arrival time, name, where you are going in the school and what you are going to do. You are given an ID badge and then are buzzed through another door. When you are done you sign back out at the office and surrender your ID badge. I doubt it cost the school system much, but the kids are protected. And that is the bottom line.

I lived in Portsmouth for 15 years. I am familiar with the ND school system. I hope that this is finally a wake up call for Portsmouth and Scioto County. As a victim of domestic violence in Scioto County I can attest to the fact that there is very little protection afforded to the victim there. It is often viewed as a 'family problem' and the victim who finally gathers up enough nerve to get a protection order or speak up about her situation is just causing trouble. In Scioto County you can expect you attacker to be permitted to break into your house often and when he appears before a judge he will be exonerated because it's an 'isolated incident', he had a good excuse and he will never do it again. Tape recordings of threats will be lost in the courthouse, you will be ridiculed for being so 'imaginative' and men will stop you in the store to explain that they hit their wives and their wives know how to keep their mouths shut. These men will not be tested for drugs...(continued)

I just wanted to say that so far what I have read on here has not all been true things that happened on that awful day. The woman on 11th street wasnt at a pizza shop she was at home and she too has a family and a young child that no one has said anything about. As a teacher it concerns me that this man was able to do what he did,we as a community really need to look at the safety of our children. What can we do to prevent this again? We all feel bad when it happened out of state but its here now. What are we going to do? My thoughts go out to the Layne family as well as the Loop family. Especially to any children involved in this.

You would have ever thought that someone would come over to a private school. You ALWAYS hear about public school shootings, but NEVER a private school shooting. I mean wouldn't that be the last place you would think of. I'm just glad my brother and my sister are safe at home with me.

Our faith in our Lord will carry us through. We are blessed to be apart of a system that puts God first and we are not ashamed of it.A miracle occured during this horrible event, God sent His angels to protect Christi and ALL the children, no doubt about it.Prayers were being said while it was all happening and God listened, because it could have been so much worse. My thoughts and prayers are with Christi and all the students especially the brave 5th graders who had to witness it. I've always been proud to be a Titan but not has much as I am now!!!!

I hope that the city of Portsmouth starts to take domestic violence more seriously being a young divorced parent I am scared that my ex-husband may try to kill me now. This hits very close to home and I don't think that people take into consideration that it could be them or that domestic violence is so serious and not so hush, hush!

We need to keep in mind that this investigation is still very new. There are certain aspects that cannot be revealed to the general public because there are children involved. NO ONE allowed Mr. Layne to enter that school building on Thursday. He was not "buzzed" in. Also, no one held the door for him either. The school and its staff are in no way responsible for the way he entered that building. Having known the Layne family for many years, I can tell you that this was a happy family until a year or so ago. Drugs and alcohol can cause terrible pain and suffering for many, not just those who live with the abuser. Unfortunately, this was made clear last Thursday. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of all involved and with the students and staff at NDE. This is a truly wonderful school system that will only be made stronger by this tragedy.

Just to let everyone know, the school did not "buzz" this man in. He was able to bypass the security somehow. The staff did their job and did it perfectly! God Bless them all! As a parent please rememember, never hold the door open for another adult when you enter a school building, each person needs to be cleared individually. I know this seems rude but unfortunately it is necessary. Also make sure the door completely latches behind you. Please keep all of Notre Dame in your prayers!

TPO'S won't stop anybody if they want to do something to you then they will. well i will pray for the teacher and all.

I think it was a horrible thing that happened. I feel for the family's of the victims and I wish them a full recovery and the best. I think the authorities of Scioto County done a great job, but they couldn't help what he did in the end. They tried their best to. Everyone done what was expected for them to do that day.

It goes to show...people need to understand what their medicine is doing to them. Also let your doctor know if there is a change in your habbits...and what the changes are. Medicine can be very dangerous...if not taken properly. My thoughts and prayers are with all involved.

I am having trouble with this senario: Restraint order in place against man... Man permitted entrance into school building where there is security in place. I mean, you NEVER know, but there was a restraint order in place! Someone should have checked before he was permitted to enter the building. God bless the victims of violent crimes.

WSAZ delievered excellent reporting on this story both locally and nationally and we pray for all the victims. There are so many. When Protective Orderes are signed both persons need to be mandated for testing and counseling for preventative measures to future incidents.

Everyone needs to remerber that there are 3 families involved. May God bless each of them. I feel for the victims and their families and also of for Mr. Laynes family. I have a child in school and I can't imagine what the kids are going thru and I pray never has to experence it. I have read the comments on this page and I must say that the 11 year old that the news interviewed, had to have permission from the parent or a legal adult. Yes I agree that children should not have to "repeat what they saw", but the adults should have said "no". It's now the news broadcast to blame. I'm sure everyone of you were glued to the TV. I think that WSAZ, the PPD, OSP, Sheriffs Dept, Portsmouth Fire Dept, and our EMS all did a great job, and was putting their own lives in danger.

Posted by: Jamie on Feb 9, 2008 at 11:12 PM
I think to the person who was questioning what Randy Yohe was saying about the school maybe being at fault, it was meant as saying that if the school & everyone in it (staff-wise) knew of the restraining order, which it's been told they did, then how did he get through a security system where you have to be buzzed into the school without someone realizing he wasn't supposed to be there due to that order? I think that was the point that was trying to be made. People have verified there is a security type system in place, but then how does he get in if supposedly people were made aware of the order. Someone who let him in either didn't know or else just buzzed him in anyway. I think that's what they need to find out b/c if he can get in with an order against him, then who else can get into our schools once a security system is in place. I think all schools need to practice the lockdowns, like a student mentioned, and have some kind of security system in place to protect our children.

I want to thank wsaz for keeping us updated by what was going on. I have a daughter a West Elem. I was unable to leave my work as we were on lock down, I work just 3 blocks from Argoone Road, being able to hear what was going on was very helpful, also thanks to radio station 93 for the coverage that they gave. May God bless both the Layne family and also the Loop family, our prayers to both of them. Also thanks to West Elem. for the lockdown drills that my daughter tells me they have every so often, it makes me fill better knowing that they are on top of things.

Being a mom myself I am sure every parents was on pins and needles. Come on let's get this fixed , there is no need in no more lifes being taken and wasted because of us just looking the other way or because our money needs to go else where. These are our kids our future wake up. I am praying for the victims and their families. It truly is a tragedy. As a teacher at a Scioto County school, you never think something like this could happen close to home. It just goes to show how important it is to have a secure environment for not only the students but the faculty as well. I am so saddened for the families, the victims, and the staff at NDE. My thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of them. May God bless them!

As a mother whose children attend Notre Dame Elementary(though they aren't in 5th grade), I can vouch that there IS a security system in place. For about a year or so, if parents need to enter the building, they press a button and announce who they are and why they are there and are "buzzed" in to the main office. The system is not perfect, but to have people here speculating that there is no security system in place is a gross falsehood. It's sad to say, but if someone has an "agenda", they will most likely find a way into any locked place. I don't think any place can be 100% protected.

I attended NDE, my son attended NDE and I actually had family that was involved in this horrific incident. I don't understand why media feel the need to put the blame on someone. I watched Randy Yohe interview the brother-in-law and it was mentioned again that possibly ND was at fault or Mrs. Layne for not disclosing the domestic situation to the school. NO! THE SHOOTER IS AT FAULT and is now gone so can't be held accountable for the events. Should everyone that's in a domestic situation be made to quit there jobs, lose everything and sit at home as not to injure anyone if their spouse decides to attack? Randy Yohe and all media that feel the need to pin the blame on someone, think about what you are saying, is it realistic? Kudos to law enforcement and staff who handled this horrible event so effectively. My prayers to all involved in this horrible situation including the troubled soul of the shooter.

I want to thank the Portsmouth Police Department and all other law enforcement involved in this event. My mother and my niece were both in the school building during this whole ordeal. I also want to commend the news for the wonderful coverage, as I live out of town and I was able to log onto WSAZ and keep up to date on the entire event. Mrs. Layne was my 5th grade teacher... and one of the most wonderful and caring individuals I've ever known. My prayers are with her and her family as well as the students and faculty of Notre Dame. I cannot thank God enough for protecting my mother, my niece, and all of the faculty and students in that building.

Thank you WSAZ for continuing to update up on the condition of both victims I'm so sorry that both of them are going through so much pain Ms. Layne is enduring so much more than just physical pain. She's going to have to deal with the fact that a man she was married to for so long & I'm sure loved for many of those years could commit such a horrible crime. AND she has to deal with his death as well. They have a son too don't they? Think I read that. So she's going to know the pain he's going through too. PLUS she has to deal with the horror that was inflicted on her students & you know she's going to place blame on herself for that when it was NOT her fault My prayers really goes out to her and her son as well as Jennifer & all the kids who were in Ms Layne's class. God bless & be with all of them Their pain & healing is going to take a LONG LONG time so they need our thoughts/prayers Our hearts/prayers are with all of you

We automatically want to assume that this man was a monster, but from what I hear, he was a good man until he had surgery, and became hooked on pain meds. People need to stop and think before they take pain meds. Even the best people can get hooked on them and go crazy and do these types of things. Remember, these two were once a happy family, and have two wonderful sons, and were expecting their first grandchild. He will never see this baby, because of the choices he made Thursday. I pray their two sons find comfort with the Lord, and that their mother recovers. I also pray for the children in that classroom and in that school, and all over the community. It was not easy explaining to my children why their school was on lockdown, and why mommy is glued to the TV.

Just because those who worked with him and lived next door to him says he was nice don't mean he was nice to her in private. I just hope she and the other lady hurt gets better real soon. I feel all school should be updated with some kind of security as visitors enter a school building. One school in particular that has no security at all is rosemount schools. Any one can come and go. My daughter goes to morning Latch key I drop her off between 6:30 - 7:00am when she gets there the gym door sometimes is standing wide open. I always tell her if someone would ever come in there with a gun or someone that looks like they dont belong there run to a class room and hide. Its really scary to think that anyone could just walk right in and hurt my child. Even when the door is closed it still isnt locked anyone could still get in. Or even through the day when you walk in the main enterance there are no doors seperating you from the children there's a sign that says stop at office, but that isnt going to stop someone that wants to kidnap or hurt a child.New schools would be nice but for now are kids need to be protected. Before something bad happens first. Could Randy look into this

People ask how someone can walk in a school- well we talked in our school today. If one of our spouses would comein know one would suspect anything. Spouses come to school to change out vehicles, eat lunch with spouses, etc. You never really think about this unless told ahead to be on the look out.

I agree with some of the comments below, shame on WSAZ for interviewing the little girl that witnessed the shooting in the classroom!!! How many school shootings have to happen before something is done such as metal detectors placed in EACH school??

I want to commend WSAZ news for your up to date coverage. Many think it was too much info. You were only reporting the obvious and frankly, if you hadn't been doing that, the same people would be talking about the lack of information. You kept a small community together, and I think you kept down the fears and panic by alllowing your audience to see it was isolated and help was there. Kudos for a job well done.

Anyone who can slander this man (Mike) w/o knowing him, obviously have lived a perfect life w/o ANY kind of illness. My thoughts are with anyone affected by yesterdays tragic events! It is very sad that this has happened.... I hope Mike has found peace! The whole Layne family have went through something none of us ever want to deal with. Please be courtious in what u write...... I have had children in the Notre Dame school system for 16 years. In no other school system will you find such a close knit relationship between the teachers, students and their families. I am devastated that this has happened to our school and our community, but am deeply grateful that we have such wonderful teachers and faculty who were there to protect our children. The way they handled this unimaginable tragedy speaks volumes of their integrity and their commitment to our children. My prayers are with all involved and I know that God will bring us through this tragedy and together we will begin to heal. I would also like to commend all law enforcement agencies for their quick response and handling of this terrible crisis. Their expertise is to be applauded. Please keep us in your prayers.

I would like to take up for interviewing the child. I'm quite confident in saying that I'm sure Ms. Cline asked the guardian for permission first. That interview brought the story home for many viewers AND the nation. Kudos. As for the "2 hour long headcount" remark--the PPD said in its news conference that they interviewed the staff and students about the events of yesterday morning. That part of the investigation is what took so long--not the "head count." Finally, I wish some of these people would learn how to spell and use proper grammar! Their spelling and grammar make their remarks silly.

I would like to express my deepest sympathies for the entire ND family and for Christy Layne. I was in Christy's first class as a teacher at Notre Dame and have very fond memories of her guidance. I also have a mother and aunt that work alongside her as teachers and was horrified when I received the call yesterday. Once arriving at the school I was proud of the way ND staff handled themselves around their students. Also, I know for a fact that ND has security measures in place to help prevent such a tragedy, but for whatever reason, Mike was able to find a way. I also would like to thank the community for their presence at the prayer service last night. It was a great testimony to the love and support the ND family has for one another.

My sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this horrible and senseless tragedy. In my opinion, this situation was handled very well by our law enforcment. As for the other schools in the county going on lock-down, I'm thankful for it. In any real time situation, events and information are constantly changing, and because of that some details can get lost in translation. It is better to be proactive than to sit idly by.

I encourage everyone, no matter where you work or how well you know someone, that when you suspect abuse is happening in a home to report it to social services. Anonymous calls are accepted. I am curious to find out more about the domestic disturbance that was reported in the Layne home only weeks ago... no matter how well you know someone or love them, it is dangerous to take on a violent person on your own. I feel so much for the children of the Portsmouth school system... when safety is compromised, children are the most affected. I'm sure the witnesses to this situation will receive appropriate services, and I wish luck to those who will be working with them. I am so happy that Mrs. Layne is going to be okay... she is finally free of a destructive relationship. I hope that she heals both physically and emotionally and continues to teach and touch lives.

I also want to congratulate all the Law Enforcement, EMS on a job well done. But, my biggest concern and gripe is, I think it is time that ALL School Boards need to quit thinking that this will not happen to us. The biggest problem is Security in our Schools. I know here in my home County they do not want to put the best security that they can in the schools because IT COST TO MUCH MONEY. I think it's time we put the safety of our children top on the list. This is an example that it can happen anyplace in this troubled Country.

We are an out lying school district and have several employees here that know Mrs. Layne. So, to think that you are not envolved is just not true. Iwould just like to say that i'm sorry about what happened yesterday, and i feel for the children that went thru this ordeel. But there are children out here that go to portsmouth schools that are upset and scared over this incident and i think it's wrong that with it happening so close to home that our school children have to go to school right next door to were this happened. My kids are to shook up to go to school, but they have to or it counts against them.I can understand that they want to contiue like nothing did'nt happen but it did and these kids are freaked out over this and because it is count week here they won't excuse our children to mourn.Portsmouth is usley all about the money for our kids but right know it needs to be about our children, and the ordeel that they had to live thru.

For approx. 10 years I lived in Portsmouth. This action really doesnt suprise me..mainly because of the unstability of scioto county as a whole, and the slow deminishing of the economy in this area. Though portsmouth is trying to come full circle, it still has a long way to go. Many law enforcement people, as well as the Mayors both past and present, have a closed eye to alot of the deep rooted problems..I personally am sickened by the fact that this situation has happened, however, maybe now the local political officials will take notice in the areas needs. Our prayers go out to Ms. Lane, and family , as well as to the other young lady involved. To the children at Notre Dame...Hold your heads high, and keep your faith.

this is a tragedy for everyone at this school. We had a similar event several years ago at our school. Except that a teacher and a janitor were killed. It's hard on the teachers, kids, staff and parents. I will never forget the day. We now have locked security doors, at first I was against these type of doors. But they have kept several people from getting inside our school that should not have been there. Safety first for our kids. I pray for all concerned in this tragedy, may God Bless and Keep you.

I WANT TO APPRAISE ALL OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS, LOCAL EMS SERVICE,FIRE DEPT AND STATE POLICE. I WATCHED THIS STORY ALL THE WAY THROUGH. THE INCIDENT WAS HANDLED AS IF THIS HAPPENDED NUMEROUS TIMES BEFORE. YOU ALL CONDUCTED YOURSELF VERY PROFESSIONAL AND SYMPATHETIC TO THE CITIZENS OF SCIOTO COUNTY. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK,THAT WAS GREAT!!!USE THIS TO EDUCATE OTHER SCHOOLS THAT THIS VIOLENCE DOES HAPPEN IN SMALL COMMUNITIES AND TO STAY ON YOUR TOES.. OUR KIDS ARE THE FUTURE, AND THEY ARE BEING RAISED IN A CRUEL AND A MENACE WORLD. THEY NEED LEADERSHIP. THERE IS NOTHING A PERSON SHOULD EVER KILL OVER. GET THE HELP YOU NEED. KILLING SOMEONE DOES NOT ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING OTHER THAN SADNESS FOR EVERYONE.

What is this world coming to? I can't believe a man would be so selfish as to do such a thing in front of children. May God be with those kids who had to watch that tragic even as well as their families. And may God be with Mrs. Layne.

Have they released the connection between the two victims?

Posted by: BILL on Feb 8, 2008 at 06:21 AM
I THINK THIS GOES TO SHOW YOU THAT YOUR SMALLER SCHOOLS I THINK TAKE IT FOR GRANITE WHEN IT COMES TO THIS TYPE OF VIOLENCE. IT GOES TO SHOW YOU IT CAN AND WILL HAPPEN AT ANY SCHOOL. I HOPE ALL SCHOOLS INCLUDING YOUR VERY SMALL ONES TAKE THIS AND TAKE A LITTLE MORE TIME ON MAKING SURE THEY ARE SAFE. I THINK ALL SCHOOL OFFICIALS SHOULD TREAT EVERYDAY AS IF THEY WERE ALERTED THAT A SUSPECT WAS COMING TO THERE SCHOOL. I KNOW THIS WAS OUTSIDE ON THE STEPS, AT LEAST THE SCHOOL COULD AT LEAST HIRE A SECURITY GUARD AND MORE SURVELLIANCE THAT IN ITSELF WILL DETOUR A LOT OF THINGS.MY PRAYERS ARE WITH THE FAMILIES,PLEASE GET WELL.JUST THINK,IT ALWAYS SEEM THAT WHEN ONE SCHOOL SHOOTING HAPPENS THERE IS ALWAYS 2 MORE. I HAVE NOTICED IT COMES IN THREE'S. YOU KNOW SOMEBODY ELSE IN THE WORLD IS PLOTTING AS WE SPEAK TO DO THE SAME THING THAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY.. SCHOOLS LETS TAKE THIS SERIOUS, WITHOUT SAFETY THERE IS NO EDUCATION. IN ORDER TO LEARN YOU MUST FEEL SAFE.. THANK YOU TO ALL..

We mostly hear about these things happening in a High School. Not an Elementary School. Either way, they are both wrong. My heart goes out to all those innocent kids that had to witness that tragic event along with their families and Mrs. Layne. May God be with her in her recovery and with the kids that they can pull through this.

This is a horrible thing to deal with especially for the children who witnessed this. How bad is this world coming to when a man can go into an elementary school with a knife/gun and stab a teacher right in front of children. I hope that the teacher and the children all heal from this terrible misfortune.

I am sadden by this event in our city today. I don't always watch the new so it was shocking to find out at 6pm today that the shooting victim is a great friend of mine. Christi was the teacher of my children both when they attended NDE. I love this women, and I am praying for her and her family and the other victim of this Christi, I and Michelle goes way back to my arrival in Portsmouth. I don't think I have ever seen her with our a smile on her face, having something good to say about some one, or walking up Kenneys Lane in the summer time. She is a great lady. Pray for her healing. I pray that this will be a time for this community to come together and begin the healing it needs. This a situation where no one wins. The loss of even one life even in this situation does not bring any glory to our God who gave his life for us. Its so sad that the most precious thing we have our lives, can be so easly taken away. Pray for healing.

I was a student at SSU for a long time. I am so impressed with their newly activated emergency alert system. No better appropriate action could have been taken! Perfect Job! WSAZ did excellent job reporting, yet should have waited for security purposes! Though law enforcement could have made it imperitive to wait! Perhaps, our teams can look back at this whole situation and learn how to resolve such matters more efficiently. Violence happens every day all over the world. It just happened in our hometown. This IS reality. I do agree that our area has turned out to "breed" violence out of drug abuse. Whether or not the shooter had a drug problem or not, this is a perfect example of what happens as a result of the illegal drug agenda. Hopefully, this incident will result in taking out the problem by the roots. Take it out with drug busts, education, counselling and therapy, security, and great parenting! Don't forget employment industry!!! Bless us all!

Being at both places (NDE Argonne St.) today, I see no reason that SSU should have been locked down. Portsmouth High and Elementary were locked because of the close proximity to NDE. Other area schools locked down because of a lack of information that can only be obtained over time. If Portsmouth Police Dept. officials would have had any reason to believe SSU was in any danger they would have been informed. The people attending SSU are adults. An alert system is in place and it was used according to the threat level at the college. At what point do we stop treating adults like children? Why not a manditory lock down of every building that has people in it? Because it's not practical. The situation at NDE was evaluated and handled appropriatly. Lets not lose our minds because of some lunatic. Efforts should be focused on the legal system and why this man was still free instead of why a state university wasn't needlessly locked down. My prayers go out to those touched by this tragedy.

I am an SSU alum and my daughter is currently attending SSU. Did you know that SSU sent out at least 7 messages warning students of what was happening? My daughter had an early morning class and SSU employees were sent to the classes to get parents of NDE students to personally inform them of what was going on. Had SSU gone into lock down these parents would not have had the option to go get their scared and frightend children. I think SSU did what they could given the situation they had to deal with. We live in a scary world and we all need to stop and hug our kids and let them know we love them. This happens all too frequently now but at home they need to know they are safe. Stop the violence in our homes and our streets will be safer. This statement is so true especially with the situation of today. Don't throw blame today show love.

I learned of the situation today when my son went to northwest to pick up my daughter for a dr. appt. & I called the school because he told me they were on lockdown . At this time the specifics of the situation were not yet known, just that a 5th grade teacher had been shot in her classroom in front of her students at Notre Dame in Portsmouth that is only about 15 miles away.I want to thank Northwest Schools for going on lockdown so quickly in order to keep my children safe. I also want to thank Mr.Scarbarry for letting me know the situation and caring about my children who were there outside the school to pick up my daughter,he personally went outside to the car and had them come into the school where they would be safe. When you live in a small community like ours you never dream this could happen and it is very disturbing especially when you have children who attend a school. It makes you realize how crazy our world has become &thankful to have all your return home each night.

As a student of a larger university of bout 40,000 students I would like to say that it is very hard to lockdown a campus of any size. Many students especially during the time of the day that the situation took place are either communiting or walking to their class. Some students do not have cell believe it or not ... I think that the concentration in this situation should be on the people affected instead of debating whether SSU did their part... Which from reading some of the comments they did a pretty good job of getting the word out if I must....So stop bickering and remember those who are going through a horrible time.....

I have one positive SSU story amidst all the negative ones...my kids go to NDE and my husband works at SSU and when we got home this morning from picking up our distraught kids, there were three separate automatic phone messages on our machine from SSU warning about today's crisis. We also got two E-mails from the University and our cell phone "called" us twice with instant warnings. Not exactly a lockdown, but the warning system in place was a hell of a lot better than even two years ago (pre Virginia Tech time). As someone who had kids at this very school today, I found the warnings from the college and the response from all the various local & state agencies to be extremely efficient and professional.

My 4, 6 & 8 year old all attend NDE and we are in a constant numb state right now. I have never seen such grace and strength under pressure...the staff at NDE are incredibly strong to shield our kids the way they did today and put on brave, even smiling faces to reassure our kids. I know many of these fine teachers consider Christi as a cherished family member and how they managed to keep it together is beyond me. My knees went out and I almost fell to the ground when I heard about this and realized my kids were in that building. My heart goes out to all those 5th grade kids, as well as Christi. Thank you to the local emergency response teams too for a fantastic job all around. What amazing professionalism!

I am a student at Notre Dame High School. When we found out about the tragic shooting we were all shocked. Most of the students had been in Mrs. Layne's class in 5th grade, and we all loved her! You hear about these kind of things happening in larger cities, but I never would have thought that it would happen to such a close-knit school such as ours. Mrs. Layne has always been an excellent teacher, and she is in all of our prayers. My heart goes out to all the children who had to witness this horrible event, as well as Mrs. Layne's children. I don't agree with interviewing an 11 year old either. I have a ten and a twelve year old myself. However, the grandmother gave permission. Maybe she made a wrong call and should have left that decision up to the parents.

According to my son Fairland was on a lock down of some sort. I can not even begin to say how scared this type of thing makes a parent, much less live it. I have to agree the interview with the young lady was in poor taste but the grandmother could have stoped the whole interview as well as the reporter. My prayers go out to all the families that have been affected, and to all the families that are just scared. I pray the 2 ladies make a full recovery and that all the vivtims here do the same. God Bless.

I would like to comment on all the things said about SSU. Being an alumni and my husband being a past security guard there I know that they did all that they could. I know that parents were concerned about their kids who attend there but think of this... the people who attend SSU are grown adults... Some of those students have children who attend ND and the local schools. How would you like it if you were told you could not leave and that you would have to wait? I had a child at a local school and the first thing I did was go and get her as soon as possible. If SSU was on lockdown then those parents could not go and get their SCARED children.

Posted by: Kim on Feb 7, 2008 at 09:56 PM
My thoughts and prayers are with all involved in this tragedy. I am a domestic violence victim myself and know the horror that happened to these two ladies who will need much counseling and medical attention. The children, I hope you all will get the help you all will so need to start your healing. This act will forever be an imprint in their precious minds and hope and pray they do all they can to get over this tragedy. I remember a time when only fire drills were practiced the most-not lockdown drills. I hope this will selfless act help schools find the resources like in grants and such to be able to employ a policeman in our schools. Our area is now not innocent to these selfless acts. WE need to protect the children more now. They are worth protecting. I hope help for the children will be there for months to come because it may take that long for the children to open up about the horror they witnessed for a teacher I am sure they loved. God Bless to all.

Although I understand the importance of covering the news and keeping people informed of what's going on, I really believe WSAZ divulged too much information during their initial coverage of this story. It became a "blow by blow" and "play by play" of what the SWAT teams were doing, and where they were located. This posed a potentially dangerous situation--as the guy was barracaded inside the house. All he had to do was watch WSAZ's coverage to know the next move of law enforcement. Not good!!!

well seems as all the local schools done a great job in protecting the students but wasn't this a little overkill on the part of the law enforcement come on swat teams from columbus and cincy osp out the ying yang plus sheriff dept and city police and most after the man was dead granted they didn't know he was dead but if it was this serious why all the people standing on the streets just watching dont seem as they were real worried about the civilians to much they did enter one home to get people out but they were equipped with bullet proof vest and body armour then bring the people out with nothing heck the man didnt even have his coat on and the woman wasn't scared if it was so serious they would of protected them better and cleared the whole block if this guy really wanted to do more harm he had a lot of chances but i guess it was good practice for the law lets hope they dont run out of these situations and get bored id hate to see the gestapo turn on innocent people just my view

Too some it may not have been necessary, but some of us parents are irate about it. My kid is in the headstart program there, and when I dropped him off, and picked him up things were all normal. I was a former student of Mrs. Layne 2 yrs ago. It was horrifying knowing that my old 5th grade teacher got shot and stabbed. The scariest thing was knowing my brother, sister, 2 of my cousins, and my friend's family were in there in danger. we found out in the middle of class crying, shaking, and praying, but thats all we could do at that time. Knowing that he's dead makes me feel relieved. I just pray to God Mrs. Layne, my favorite teacher, makes it, and begins teaching once more.

My daughter is a senior at Shawnee State and I am appauled that the college was not on lockdown. There were lockdowns in other counties but Shawnee is within walking distance to Notre Dame and they never locked that school down. Who is there to keep our children safe? We the parents pay a great deal of money for tuition for our children to be unprotected. This is unexcusable!!!!! I want to thank all the authorities for their promt handeling of the situation and I want to thank WSAZ for the great coverage. I watched it all on this great website. My brother lives within a block from this house so I was very concerned for his safety. I will be praying for all involed in this situation and I ask that you all do the same. I chose to send my son to Notre Dame to protect him from the language and violence that can occur in the city school system. Little did I know that all today's events would happen before his very eyes: nothing can ever protect our children. Violence is all around us and we are numb since we're repeatedly subjected to it. I am tired of terrible things happening, especially those that are in the presence of children. May the kids learn to cope and deal with all the emotions forced into them after bearing witness to today's event. Wishing recovery and healing to the victims wounded today- including the emotionally wounded. Thanks to WNXT and WSAZ for keeping us informed; it was comforting to hear the police (local and state) had the situation contained and controlled.

Is anyone actually reading these comments? Some of you have so much advice yet know little. This was a family member of an employee which gave him access to the inside of the school because they "knew" him but not necessarily the private situation they were involved in. Things could always have been handled differently but things were handled according to their best judgement at the time. It's a very unfortunate situation and what we need to be spending our energy doing is "praying" for Ms. Layne not bad-mouthing the press or those involved. Judge less be judged.

Thank you WSAZ for your continued coverage on this story. Although I am glad that I was able to follow the story from states away- I continue to question your interviewing the 11 year old girl. This just seems out of place for me. She had obviously been exposed to one of the most tragic events a child can witness. The children need to be seeking comfort from counselors and family members- not reliving the events that took place to a news reporter. Our prayers are with Ms. Layne, Ms. Loop, and their families.

hey my school was never put on lock down but should have been because no one was aloud to leave the school building. if you went to votec or had a college prep class you had to stay at the school. so you can say we was on lock down but we never actually was. so i guess you can say we was on semi lock down. acdog

I thought the WSAZ coverage was great until I saw the little girl being asked TOO many questions after witnessing the shooting. How could you do that? Also, it made no since for WSAZ to say they did not want to tip off the shooter as to where the SWAT team was by zooming in, yet they describe the house in detail and show it from a short distance. If the guy was alive at that time and was watching your station, he knew exactly who was outside and where they were located. It's pathetic what WSAZ will do to get the story first. God Bless the two injured and all of the kids at ND Elementary.

I now live in Tucson, AZ, but I went to ND Elementary back when it was called Holy Redeemer. I have a lot of fond memories of that school. I pray for all the families of Notre Dame and all the parishes and the community, and for Cristi Layne and her family. Congratulations to the Portsmouth PD, to Notre Dame, and to everyone else who acted quicly and professionally through a very chaotic event.

My prayers are with Christi Layne. Even in this fearful situation, I'm sure her concern was for those children in her care. May God watch over her through the night and send a sense of peace and healing to her students now that there is closure to the situation.

Why did it take over 2 hours for the school to get an accurate "head count"?? This seems like a very long time!!! Did the school not have any type of security??It is very disturbing to think that any person can just stroll into a school without being noticed!!! What does this say for our school systems and our childrens safety???

Posted by: Ms S on Feb 7, 2008 at 06:17 PM
As a parent of a child inside the school today during the shooting, I would like to commend the emergency personnel and school for how well they handled the situation. They did a great job keeping everyone safe, calm and organized. For such a tragic event, it could not have been handled any better.

I was home today and didn't have class, so I'm not sure if SSU locked down their doors. But I did receive several calls from their automated alarm system on my home phone and my cell phone. I was given information about the shooting and that the assailant was not in the SSU vicinity. We were to take caution. I must admit, I am afraid in this small town now. I've lived here most of my 40 years and I've not went out unescorted after dark for years. This happened in broad daylight. I no longer want my children out of my site. The only choice I have is to better educate them and teach them to be suspicious of everyone. This is such a tragedy. My niece is a teacher at Holy Redeemer and she was there today. May God keep His protecting hand upon us all everyday.

I am very surprised at how the Portsmouth Police Dept. handled today's tragic situation. They did a very good job. I am a senior at SSU and we all received alerts to be cautious and keep a lookout. I don't believe a total lock-down was necessary. I would also like to commend WSAZ for their superb coverage of the story. Although interviewing the student might not have been the best idea, the story was still covered well. My prayers go out to all the families involved.

Posted by: Hope on Feb 7, 2008 at 05:24 PM
Make sure to ask your administrators of your childrens' schools whether or not any teacher or staff member have restraining orders against themselves or someone else. At least you can decide then if you want your child in that school or in that teacher's room. How ridiculous this world has become.

I am a student at Shawnee State University and i would have to agree that i am very upset that the college was not closed. This shows that there is not enough stuff being done to protect the students and faulity. This is bad when all you have is securtiy calling you on a phone and telling you what has happened. Schools are suppose to be a safe and honestly i don;t think it is. I am not happy with Shawnee State University at all.

Ann,I am sure you also didnt know that if you are a student who cant have internet access that early in the morning then you wouldent have known anything about it.. they should send it to everyone without the students having to do it themselves.. Shawnee needs phone systems set up they need a lot more then they have.. and say this would have happened a few months ago students wouldent had anything to go by.. thanks to SSU'S SGA(STUDENT GOVERMENT)I hear they are trying and responsible for the things that are improving on SSU campus..hopefully more things happen.I do think that more actions should have been taken... ADIMS on campus are aying they saw no reason for lock down??? they need to open their eyes.. their lives are at stake too and maybe if they continue to think about just themselves then the thought of this happening to them will make them think..use your brains people!!I am with the other students on this one..all of us students didnt feel safe today and we should be safe!!!!!!

I understand the intense interest in this story, but having Carrie Cline interview an 11 yr old child about what she saw, including a description of her wounded teacher, is beyond the pale.  I just can't find the words for how horrified I am with that kind of "reporting." It was incredibly explotative, and should have never been allowed to happen.

I live in Portsmouth and this is a very scary thing to happen so close to home. You hear about it all over the news and never think it could happen in your town. All of the schools did the right thing and do a lock down except for SSU. My prayers go out to the victims and the children involved.

Posted by: Sally on Feb 7, 2008 at 04:19 PM
Let me just say that today was an extremely scary day. At first, it started out as a normal day and then the lockdown sirens went off. When we figured out that the coverage was on CNN, Headline News, MSNBC, Channel 10 News, and WSAZ, every student in the building knew it was no joke. All I want to say is that I feel very sorry for the 5th grade students of Mrs. Layne's room. And send my prayers out to Mrs. Layne and Miss. Loop.

Posted by: Alan on Feb 7, 2008 at 03:56 PM
First off our prayers need to go out to the victims and the children at ND. I would also like to add a comment about the person asking why other schools where being locked down. Its better to be safe than sorry and at the time of the incident all you hear is speculation so until you hear the facts you need to keep every child safe. Advise to SSU! GET WITH THE PROGRAM! You have to protect your kids also! I also want to commend WSAZ for an excellent job on covering the story. And finally, My hats off to Portsmouth Police, Scioto County Sherriff, State Patrol, area school officials, WNXT, and City Officials for the way this whole situation was handled from the first minute. It really seemed to me that it was handled with urgency but very calm, proffesional and informative for the situation that we all were faced with this morning. It seemed that there was a plan in place and it worked for the entire area, which makes me proud to live in sciot county and work in Portsmouth, Ohio. God Bless!

I can not believe what this world is coming to. How did the man get into the school with those weapons? I will think twice before I will send my kids to school now. Schools are suppose to be a safe place for kids to learn things that will help them in life not these kinds of things. I will pray for the family of those injured today and for the whole world. Everyone needs to pray for their lives everyday and they need to plead the blood of Jesus over their family very minute and second of everyday.

I lived on Argonne Rd. for years and Mike and Christy Layne were very good friends of mine. I would have never dreamed anything like this would ever happen to them.I am worried about thier two sons. They went to school with my daughter at Notre Dame High School. When the kid were smaller they all played ball in front of their house and Christy would bake cookies and bring it out for all the kids to eat. Both of my children went to Notre Dame Elementary. It is a wonderful school and I hope that because this has happened people won't decide to take thier children out of that school.I will miss them dearly.I will pray for them all. Please keep them in your prayers.

Posted by: Mark on Feb 7, 2008 at 03:39 PM
You're not going to stop, idiots, from carrying weapons. But you can stop them from entering schools, with weapons. Add this to the ballots to pay additional taxes and hire a Security Guard and put in a metal detector. This would be penny's per person and would be well worth it.

Posted by: mike on Feb 7, 2008 at 03:36 PM
They put all surrounding schools on lockdown because they didn't know what type of situation they had until it became clear to them what was going on. BE GLAD THE SCHOOLS AND POLICE CARE ENOUGH about our kids to protect them that way. They didnt know the situation so they acted with prudence. You would be the first ones complaing if they didnt lock your school down that was 35 miles away and something else happened and they went ot your school and hurt some you would be asking " why didnt they lock our schools down" An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. THANK YOU OSHP, PORTS CITY POLICE, SHERIFFS DEPT and all of the schools who protected our children today. Some of us do appreciate the care you show for our kids.

My daughter is an SSU student. I am impressed with SSU's notification system in response to the terrible incident in Portsmouth. They quickly, without panic, notified all students who have provided SSU "ALERT ON-CAMPUS EMERGENCY INFORMATION SYSTEM" with 2 phone numbers and an email address of the developing inicident. They asked students to remian alert and to report any unusual activity to campus security and provided this phone number. As she had given my cell phone number as one of her contacts, I, too received these same messages. So my reply to the SSU student complaining .... Get your info into their system... and I am sure if you were in a campus building you were hearing announcements on this situation. My husband is in Iraq but he too was hearing of this incident. I was glad to share with him SSU's response. And WZAS coverage has been excellent. Our prayer's to teacher, students and staff of ND Elementary. Thank you police and emeergency responders.

I grew up right around the corner from this school. I used to walk by it on a daily basis and I could see it from my bedroom window. It saddens me that something like this could happen in a community like Portsmouth. My thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims as well as the students who were forced to witness such a horrific act. I only hope that this will make the school systems take a much stronger look at thier safety policies and put safeguards in place that will insure that this sort of thing NEVER happens again. I also hope that this will force law enforcement in the area to reconsider thier policies reguarding domestic violence and restraining orders. If the shooter were in jail when his wife filed the restraining order... none of this would have happened. It only goes to show that restraining orders are nothing more than pieces of paper and that they do NOT protect victims if the person is truely intent on doing harm.

THIS IS SO SAD FOR THE KIDS AND OTHER TEACHERS AT THIS SCHOOL. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS HOW HER HUSBAND GOT IN THE SCHOOL WITH A GUN TO SHOT HER. SCHOOLS NEED BETTER SECARITY. THEY COULD OF PREVINTED THIS. THIS MAKES A PERSON SCARED TO SEND THERE KIDS TO SCHOOL. I HAVE A 4 YEAR OLD THAT ATTENDS PRE-K AND THEY KNOW WHO IS COMMING IN AND OUT ALL THE TIME. WHY CANN'T A GRADE SCHOOL, MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND/OR HIGH SCHOOL KNOW?

As for the lockdown with Fairland and South Point, just one comment. With today, after 911, anything that happens, threats, shooting anything with mass news coverage, it's part of the of the security plan, to lockdown. My kids attend Fairland and I know that they are safe. Why other schools are not just going ahead and doing it, is beyond me. Parents from the schools not doing it, need to take a bigger stand and at get the Board to start doing it. Again, my hearts go out to everyone affected by this today. God Bless.

So many thoughts go through me when I think of school shootings. I have younger brothers that are still in school.. and I cant imagine anything happening to them while they were at school. School is suppose to be a place for children to learn and grow. How in the world will they learn anything if they live in fear while at school? What kind of security do these schools have? A man can just walk into a school full of kids and shoot someone? I think that something needs to be done about this. Its crazy! My question is for all schools in this area... how can people just walk in a school???? have we not learned from other schools mistakes? my son just started pre-k and i walked right in his school, not one person knew I was there. I was in the school for almost 2 minutes. every ounce of faith i had in the school systems have vanished on this day. I trust the schools to keep my children safe as possible. the line of "possible" is crossed when they can't even protect the entrance way.

To SSU Student: Put Shawnee on lockdown, yes? It's within 10 mins of ND. Lawrence County, though? Come on. I am in SP and I have not felt threatened because of this incident.

Any news yet on whether or not this guy has turned himself in yet? This is unimaginable to me how a human being can shoot and stab someone, let alone in front of a classroom of kids. This is a very disturbing story for me; made all the more real by the fact that my mother is a teacher at Portsmouth High School. I certainly wish nothing but the best for the two victims and all the children that had to witness such a horrible act.

I am disgusted by Shawnee secruity and I will that something is done about this..I am not happy about how this has been handled... classes should have been cancelled and campus should have been shut down..this is insane.. I am happy that some of SSU staff is getting there pretty paychecks(not saying names!!) and not really looking out for the best of there sudents safety,I doubt I allow my children to attend there next year!!

I am a 7th grade student at Notre Dame Jr. High School. I had Mrs. Layne as a 5th grade teacher. She is a wonderful person and I hope she gets well soon. Many of my friends were in the classroom and i'm sure they could use your prayers. I was at school when we went into lockdown. All of my classmates and I were very worried and scared. Most of us have gone home now but are just in shock.

Posted by: Martin on Feb 7, 2008 at 01:36 PM
"why werent the doors locked?" you cannot lock entrances during business hours while a building is occupied. Thats just the way it is.

How did this person get in the school? We need to fix it where people can't just walk in off of the streets!! God help us! I am praying for all involved!

I have been following this story since Wsaz first announced it this morning. I've been listening to wnxt radio station also. Earlier Jan Broughton of Portsmouth High School called in live on the radio to announce that the High School was no longer on lockdown that was around 11:00 am. My son is a senior at Portsmouth West, he just called me at 1:20pm and informed me that they are on lockdown. As I've been reading all the comments from students at other schools outside of Scioto County are. This doesn't seem to make much since, is'nt Portsmouth High School really close to Notre Dame Elementary?

have they caught this guy yet and how do they know he is in his house for sure? And do we need to be on alert when we leave school or should we not leave at all??

thoughts and prayers to the school and community in portsmouth. is there any public awarness for individuals in government offices and other institutions to keep them aware of such emergencies, to safe guard the workers and public.

Posted by: a SSU student. on Feb 7, 2008 at 01:31 PM
to the Pointer comment.. I know that South Point isnt very far.. but schools around the shooting should have been more protected then say Fairland and South point who have police standing by the schools there when we dont.. I think that Shawnee will hear a lot of about this from parents and such seeing how they thik texting us and sending an email will help protect us...what if you dont have internet or a cell phone then what??I think that Shawnee State's preseident or VP whoever is responsible for how things were handled needs to think about the students more then they are..all of students feel very unsafe being right down the street from all of this.. our classrooms were empty due scared students..COME ON SSU protect your students more then you do..seriously!!

Why are there not security guards in every school?I have always been under the impression that a certain amt. of money from the lottery goes towards education and schools if this were true surely guards could be afforded. We are only talking about 25-30 thousand a year per guard, come on lets save our children and future leaders from harm both physically and mentally.

How sad. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone there. I cannot see how the man got into the building, was there no security at the school? And it took 2 hours to account 150 kids? It sounds like the school not up to code with security or did not have a fast and quick plan to account for the kids? I will pray for the teacher and the students.

I know someone who knows this guy. He said he was on drugs, had just purchased a gun permit and a 357 Magnum. The teacher had a restraining order on the guy. The school should have been locked. Please everyone pray for her.

I am a student SSU and we are practically right in the middle of everythig going on.I wish Shawnee's campus woupld work harder to protect us students seeing how this guy could be on the loose. They dont know if he is in that house or not. The helicopters are flying over us..we can hear police andetc.. I have friends who live down that way... every school is being protected except us.. including schools no where around our local area.

My daughter attends Shawnee State just a couple of blocks from where the school shooting happened. They SHOULD have been on lockdown. I told my daughter to stay inside and now question Shawnee's security plan. I'm sure if Virginia Tech had it to do over again, they wish they had locked down at the first sign of shooting!

Posted by: Anna on Feb 7, 2008 at 01:13 PM
I send my daughter to NDE because I believe it is a wonderful school. I know everything will be done to prevent anything from occuring like this in the future. I never thought this would ever happen there. I pray for our teacher and everyone involved. It is a total shock that this has happened.

I graduated from Minford way back when (74) & saw post here from young lady who said even they are locked down. Is every school in the county locked down? Why? Do they think this guy has relatives or connections with other schools? Or is there more than one thing going on down there? Yes it's a sad day when we can't send our kids to school or college without having to worry about violence. Back in my day, the worst things teachers had to worry about was kids smoking in the bathrooms and the worst things kids had to worry about was the dress code (dresses too short & silly things like that). We never know now & neither do the kids what they will face during the day which is terrible. What a world! I'm praying for all the kids at the school, the teacher & all involved. What a horrible thing for kids to witness, be involved in. Why on earth did he do it THERE to put those kids at risk & scar them for life perhaps? Obviously very disturbed individual God bless them all

This is a reply to "Very Disgusted!" Your claim blaming the media for disclosing the "secret" about the SWAT team being on the scene...I mean...come on...Unless this guy is blind, I think he can look out the window of the house he is in and see the big black SWAT truck in his front yard. WSAZ is just trying to do their job in keeping this community informed. Quit your belly aching. Appreciate being informed.

are any roads closed in portsmouth due to the shooting?

Posted by: concerned on Feb 7, 2008 at 12:45 PM
This shooting at the school should speak loud and clear how important it is to have police officers in the schools. We need these Pro-Officers full-time in the high schools and middle schools, and half days for elementary sites. We watch as more and more students, teachers, and school staffs are put in danger, yet we allow the local BOE's to put other issues in front of school safety. Let's take this seriously and rally for Pro-Officers to be a priority.

Posted by: Lisa on Feb 7, 2008 at 12:44 PM

I agree with the comment re: No Gun Zones. The only ones who benefit from no gun laws are the criminals. They are happy when those laws are passed because they know that the common citizen has no way to protect themselves.People think that no gun laws would make them safer, the truth is...take a look at what just happened. It could have been you or me. Just like drugs being illegal, the common citizen can't get them, but the drug dealers and criminals can. The same will hold true for guns. We need gun safety education for our children and citizens, NOT NO GUN LAWS. Protect yourself and your family, take a gun safety class and your concealed weapons class. It is very informative and gives you a sense that you can protect yourself from things like this tragic situation. Elect politicians who support firearms. I pray for everyone involved, especially the children and the teacher and the police now dealing with the situation.

Posted by: Very Disgusted! on Feb 7, 2008 at 12:21 PM
Wow! I will truly say I am disgusted at how this is being handled by the news crew! To badger a CHILD as they come out of one of the most terrifying situations they could ever face, and continue to ask questions, is DISGUSTING! I think any person who had a heart would realize this is just a child and she has already been through so much, why continue to make her relive it. I am sure the police will have to make her tell the story again and again. They should have asked the basic "what happened" and left it alone. Also, you say on the broadcast you don't want to tip off the suspect as to the SWAT team being present, yet you describe thoe house down to the color of the siding, the trim, etc and show it continually on the screen! All he has to do now is look out the window and know you are there. Instead, it should have been kept quiet at this time, and wait until they could get him out of there and then tell the full story of which house, etc. Too many facts! Not enough brains!

This is a horrible event and my prayers go out to everyone involved! I took my daughter to school after this happened today and of course the front doors of the school were unlocked and ANYONE could just walk in. It is absolutely gut wrenching to me to know that my daughters school has the ability to lock the door and they have a buzzer and camera set up to monitor who's coming in....but they don't!!!! Again, my prayers are with everyone involved!!!!!

We DEFINITELY don't want our reputation in the DRUG PIPELINE jeopardized by a bad reputation. Please, we have drug problems, prostitutes and (poor excuses for) gangs. This is tragic, but why is this shocking? We breed this trouble.

Posted by: Miss D on Feb 7, 2008 at 12:04 PM
Actually the shooting and stabbing was in the classroom. 5th graders were giving statements to the police until just recently. It was her estranged husband and they believe he also stabbed the victim's mother.

I do nnot care if this man was going through a bad divorce, on medication, or whatever else might have played a role in this situation. None of that changes the perception of right and wrong. I have an 11 year old child and that man cross the line when he went into a classroom to take care of a personal situation. If they catch that man alive, I hope he gets the full extent of the law. Society has given excuses to poeple for doing these acts like a bad divorce or medication to try to understand why poeple do these things but in essece it has given poeple like this an almost right to do it. We need to stop this cycle before anyone else gets hurt.

I have heard that the second shooting is at Agonn Rd. he is barracaded in the house with weapons.

Posted by: Tereza on Feb 7, 2008 at 10:34 AM
I am shocked that something like this has happend in Portsmouth.

Posted by: Michael on Feb 7, 2008 at 10:32 AM
This is exactly the reason why concealed carry permit holders should be allowed to carry their firearms without restriction! The teacher obviously could not carry her gun to work at the school, but the "NO GUNS" sign did not stop the shooter from bringing his to the school. NO GUN ZONES do not work!

Posted by: jon on Feb 7, 2008 at 10:32 AM
confirmed that portsmouthswat team is in the area and have requested Life ambulance to dispatch their search and rescue helicopter to the area to help the police department.

Please pray for our community and our country. Things like this happen everyday, and we need to open our eyes and do what we can to prevent this and to pray for our children.

i have a friend who teaches at Portsmouth Elem. across from Notre Dame Elem. they are all on lock down also. thanks wzaz for keeping us updated. i am telling her via txt msg what is going on.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 7, 2008 at 10:30 AM
this is ridiculous. The shooter needs to be punished and he is horrible. all those kids, knowing that their teacher was shot will be scarred for life. i go to northwest

Posted by: chastity on Feb 7, 2008 at 10:28 AM
im am a Piketon High School student and our school is now on lock down for percaution

Posted by: Donna B on Feb 7, 2008 at 10:27 AM
I hope none of the kids seen this. It would traumitize them. Just knowing about it is one thing but to see it happen is even worse. I hope they catch the person who did it and that the teacher is going to be ok.

Posted by: marcy on Feb 7, 2008 at 10:23 AM
I believe the shooter should be punished to the fullest extent of the law and beyond. I am a mother of 5 and it always tears me up to see things like this on the news happening other places, but to know it's just down the river really puts it in to perspective. Those are children in there and adults who we place our trust in to look after and educate our children. It is very heartbreaking to hear this and my prayers are with all involved. I use to ask why God let these things happen in our schools, but I suppose he can't do much to prevent it when he isn't allowed in. Seems like since we took school prayers away school violence and tragedies have replaced it. I do respect the fact that people have different religious beliefs but also think we can all agree something more needs to be done to curb incidents and tragedies such as this.

I think that it is crazy that we now have to worrie about peoe comeing in to our schools and shooting teachers I want to know what kind of scurity do we have in the schools if someone an just walk in and shoot a teacher. It scares me to think that it can happen in a smaller city like portsmouth.

Now my favorite restaurant in the world Kentucky Fired Chicken has thrown in twith these nuts and is grilling chicken now. Chicken was never meant to be grilled only fried regular or extra crispy. So people I say get busy we have work to do they is two states in front of us we in WV have to reclaim our top spot as best fed in the whole country go down to the foodland or kroger and get a cube of regular mountain dew a sack of Lays chips and some good ball park big red smokeys with a big bowl of chili and have a grill out tomorrow to celebrate the fourth of July in style and may I say God bless the USA and coal miners too.

Just to make it short, government dependence(happening more than ever) and is almost being forced for the citizens of this country to rely on. Cap and trade?(sign of the mark of the beast?)I don't know. I am ready. You that believe in science is fine, I do too. I do not go as far as to believe every report they give out. I pose this question. if you are so worried about global warming that means you don't like heat or burning:correct? Hmmm, think on this of what in Revelation I do understand. The lake of fire is where the worm dieth not and the fire is never quenched. Eternity is forever, on this Earth we are just passing through.

  • Posted By: PattyGood points, Htiek, but the status quo with coal mining, which is a dirty business, no matter how it is marketed, i.e., "clean coal" (coal is dirty, period), will remain till the resources are depleted, the land and environment of the coal fields are destroyed, which is pretty much the case at present.
  • Posted By: bonnOne more thing and I really will stop. Why does the weather cycle? I do not know everything-no one does. But everything has its purpose. Sometimes, more cold is called for. If we don't have hard winters snakes and mosquitoes thrive, for one. Mosquitoes are a large part of fish diet. And snakes keep rodents in check. But too much cold hurts other things that call for warmer temps. Quail is one thing that comes to mind that suffer in the frigid temps. We just don't understand all of the workings of these things. But it is all to keep a balance-many times in things we ourselves have killed off, such as bear and wolves. Even if we don't like some species, they all serve a purpose and nature helps keep that balance. Our world really was wonderfully made. With all the changes in temperature, we still have seasons. You can know it will be cold in winter and hot in summer. The excesses serve a purpose we sometimes can not see. Strive to learn of all of her wonders, not follow blindly.
  • Posted By: bonnI would like to apologize if I have been short and critical. I really am sorry. It is no excuse, but I have a very sick child who may be dying and I get so upset at the state of our world. I do have to quit reading these comments. But I hope I have caused a few people at least to think with their own common sense instead of blindly following whatever. Some theories may be correct. But many ARE for monetary purposes. We each were given a mind to think with. Question everything before taking it as it appears. And be sure and thank a veteran for the freedom we celebrate this weekend. Too many have died to protect it to just give it up willingly. And whether or not you are religious, lets try to love one another. Love can fix so many things! Try to keep our world clean, But that doesn't have to bankrupt us. We can all do our part in whatever ways we can. The old saying "Give a hoot, don't pollute" should not have gone out of style. And use your wikipedia to read "Ice Age" to see cycling.
  • Posted By: Follow up on cap and rapeCNSNews.com) – The 1,400-page cap-and-trade legislation pushed through by House Democrats contains a new federal policy that residential, commercial, and government buildings be retrofitted to increase energy efficiency, leaving it up to the states to figure out exactly how to do that. This means that homeowners, for example, could be required to retrofit their homes to meet federal “green” guidelines in order to sell their homes, if the cap-and-trade bill becomes law. The bill, which now goes to the Senate, directs the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop and implement a national policy for residential and commercial buildings. The purpose of such a strategy – known as the Retrofit for Energy and Environmental Performance (REEP) – would be to “facilitate” the retrofitting of existing buildings nationwide. In other words all your appliances-heating-stove -fridge-windows-would have to meet green standards before we sell SOCAILISM HAS ARRIVED YESWEDID

In a revamped health care system envisioned by senators, people would be required to carry health insurance just like motorists must get auto coverage now. The government would provide subsidies for the poor and many middle-class families, but those who still refuse to sign up would face fines of more than $1,000. The details were unveiled Thursday in a health care overhaul bill supported by key Senate Democrats looking to fulfill President Barack Obama's top domestic priority.SOCAILISM IS HERE The Congressional Budget Office estimated the fines would raise around $36 billion over 10 years. Senate aides said the penalties would be modeled on the approach taken by Massachusetts, which now imposes a fine of about $1,000 a year on individuals who refuse to get coverage. Under the federal legislation, families would pay higher penalties than individuals
  • Posted By: bonnGood grief! The brain washing has gone so far it will never get better. Some of this way of thinking makes me physically ill in my stomach. All of one mind! Mindless devotion to whatever is contrary to common sense and whatever theory is being passed around. Most families have both parents working, some two jobs, just to make it now. Soon you won't even be able to work enough to carry your family, the government and the ones who won't work. Then you will be disposable and they will start killing you off because you can't give them enough money. But you will blindly keep following. It is easy to see how Hitler took control and how it is being set up for the antichrist to take control. I quit. I will never read another comment. And Kris, did that nut not know the sky has always appeared blue? Hahaha Goodbye. I know you will reply, but I won't be reading it. Never again. Either you believe God or the scientists. • Posted By: HtiekWhat always amazes me about people in WV is their slavish devotion to coal mining even though it is killing the planet, costs more jobs than it creates, poisons the water, destroys the mountains, scars the land, kills the snail darter, and other horrible things. Things are all so backwards in this country why dont we switch over to something that lasts and is free like the sun and wind? Even if the president said that stuff and I doubt he did and even if he did you are misquoting him or taking him out of context he is right if there is one sure way to get people to stop turning their air conditioners down to 76 it is to raise the price, just like gasoline. People we can learn to ride bikes and walk again, just like they did in the old days, that will help give us exercise and decrease the obesity rate in WV. Food is another area, the slop that people eat like MacDonalds, trans fats, regular soft drinks, anybody with half a brain knows the intelligent thing to do is tax regular soda pop.

  • Posted By: KrisHi Bonn, it is true that these cycles do occur over time. Scientists have taken core samples from the earth and the ice to show these cycles. However, none of the samples show such a dramatic change in such a short period of time. I am a smoker and I will admit that my second hand smoke can and probably will effect the lungs of a non-smoker. The tons of carbon monoxide and other pollutants that we release into our atmosphere HAS TO have an effect on our atmosphere. True story: there was a scientist that day after day after day couldn't figure out why the sky was so blue and clear. Then it struck him, there hadn't been ANY planes in the air for three days. That was 911. What you put out, is what you get back. If you put love out, you will get love back. If you put out negativity, you will get negativity back. For every action, there is a reaction whether it's good or bad. It's in our hands to do our best not to cause an adverse impact to our planet. Peace to ALL!
  • Posted By: Big EarlHello again good working coal mining people of WV this is the coal miners friend Big Earl with news of yet another hippie plot to stick there big noses further into our business now some of these people in Congress has throwed in with the tree huggers they are trying to make it so you cannot sell your house without some nut from the hippie EPA coming in and inspecting it to make sure you are green enough to suit there tastes. This so called cap and trade bill that these busy body do gooders are pushing on us will destroy our jobs and run up the electric bills so that everybody will have to live like the Waltons with 27 people under one roof just to keep warm. Now the average hippie longhair don’t care noway because they would have us all living in mud huts riding mules wearing sandals and weaving baskets to load down with califlowers and arougalas tofu and alfalfa to take up on some worthless mountaintop as an offering to there windmill god instead of having nice homes, cars, a job and cool air in the summer and heat in the winter ALL THANKS TO THE COAL MINER. Anything to bother people attracts these hippies like flies to a cowpie.

It's kind of strange how people become so shocked when this stuff is introduced in the House of Reps. THE PEOPLE HAVE NEVER VOTED ON IT, BUT THEY ARE TRYING TO GET YOU BELIEVE THAT IT WILL SAVE LIVES. TELL THEM TO GIVE YOU THE FIGURES ON ACCIDENTAL OPERATIONS.And if that doesn't satisfy you then why are we allowing our young brave soldiers to be killed, and for whom? WHY AREN'T THESE NEWSPAPERS BRINGING THIS INFORMATION TO THE PEOPLE? Because the nations 96% are owned and controled by the WEALTHIEST.
  • Posted By: bonnI was trying to make a point. Perhaps not in the best way. I get so discouraged seeing what is happening around us. One group of scientists call for us to spread soot on all the snow up north to absorb heat to counter the coming ice age. Another (more popular) group calls for painting our roofs white to reflect the heat that is melting our ice caps. Which group is right? Neither. Our earth is doing exactly as it has been doing all along. Cycling naturally. Did it plan it all on its own? Hardly. But no one wants to hear that. It reminds me of "chicken little" yelling "the sky is falling". Only this is not so funny-this is control. And what is even sadder is-people seem to WANT to be controlled. This earth will continue as always until one preplanned day it all comes to a screeching halt. Then a new earth will be created. I will not be caught off guard. I read The Book. I know where I will be. Do you? And do you really enjoy giving those schemers your money that much? I hope one day...
  • Posted By: KeithA few questions for the Yell audience: Does anyone remember when Obama gave that interview in SanFran Cisco and said that he would not prevent the construction of a coal fired plant, but his policies would bankrupt anybody that tried to build one? That policy was cap and trade. I heard O say that energy prices, under his administration, would "necessairly skyrocket." Is this the hope and change you guys voted for? How will you afford your electric and gas service under this man who cares so much for the poor? Obama said once that he was not bothered that the price of gas had risen so high, just that it happened so fast. How does everyone feel about the gas price? Obama raked John Pablo McCain over the coals for suggesting health care benefits be taxed as income, now he is going to do the same thing to pay for "free" care to illegal aliens, deadbeats, etc...but union workers will be exempt from this tax. How does that make you feel if you work for a living and are not in a union? H&C

The stimulus package would prevent it from going above 8%, remember? How is Iran not our business but Honduras is? The people of Honduras have a Constitution very similar to ours and we should support the people not an extremist who is trying to take over their country. The 22nd Amendment does a great service for our nation. IF it would be reversed that would be O.K too. At the rate Obama is going W. could beat him in 2012. At least I would sleep better at night.
  • Posted By: Just MeWow Jane Doe, give it a rest. I really don't think God would be please with this going on and on and on...healthy banter is fine, but this is not healthy banter. Christians absolutely can and do get angry, it's what they do with that anger that counts. It doesn't matter where, when, or even IF you go to church...what matters is that you have accepted Christ into your heart and asked for forgiveness of your sins. God didn't save us to judge others, he saved us to lead others to him. I've said many times...what if the person you just yelled at, told off, or whatever showed up at your church on Sunday? Would you be proud of your behavior?
  • Posted By: SophieRoane County is a beautiful place. The country roads snake along past fields, farms and old homes we wish could talk. Looneyville is indeed named after the Looney family, so is Gandeeville. My father was from Roane Co. & graduated from Walton High School in the 40's. He told me tales of his school days, friends, boyish pranks, old cars and the fun they had at the 4-H camp. Spencer was a big place to them. Roane Co. gave us many war veterans and kept distant family & friends together with the annual "Roane County Reunion". I don't even know if they still have it, but we used to go. I remember seeing Sen. Robert Byrd play his fiddle there. The Black Walnut Festival in October(?) is a good time to visit Spencer. They usually have a parade, arts & crafts and a museum. You can enjoy a slice of Americana, along with a slice of homemade pie.

There is also a Lefthand Post Office on Rt.36, always wondered why there wasn't a Righthand also. Our County seat is located in Spencer, (middle of nowhere) which for years was only known for its State Mental Institution. (no Jane Doe this isn't my Alma mater) It was closed years ago and now a Wal-Mart is on that location. I guess the only other thing to speak of would be the Black Walnut Festival which is held in Spencer every October.
  • Posted By: bonn, the simpletonDon't we have a smart earth? She formed herself from a dust cloud, they say and planted herself just the right distance from the sun to support the life she would create. She also filled her insides with molten heat to maintain the right temps and if that builds too much she decides to blow some out holes (volcanoes) to keep from exploding. She makes her own rain, knowing whether she needs a gentle soaking rain for her plants, or a gully washer to cleanse the filth. It pours down the mountains, into the rivers and out into the ocean which she just happened to fill with salt (her natural sanitizer). And she knows if she doesn't have ice she will over heat, but too much and she will freeze, killing her life she so carefully made. So she melts some, then as it heats up, she freezes more. All just coincidental happenings? She is brilliant! But not so smart as the humans who are making a fortune controlling the other dumb humans by convincing them THEY are causing her to do these things!!!

Obama gets elected, the world understands our good will, and all is well. Just like history, Republicans start wars, Democrats finish them. Hate to say we told you so but we told you so, I just get fuzzy inside thinking about all the people that love us now that hated us because of that old Bush. Another thing too, leave this Iran thing alone, that is none of our business. I dont recall anybody from Iran coming over here to help us in 1776 so why should we stick our nose in their business? When you get a strong leader like in Honduras, a good strong leader with a military background, everybody goes nuts because the guy takes things over well I support him and Obama. In fact, some people are so needed we better start now to get rid of the 22nd Amendment, it was only put in by jealous radical extremist crazy Republicans to hurt FDR.

Simple belief in Jesus Christ is where it starts, the rest as I put it, is just "gravy". Jane: I'm sorry your child was hurt. This indeed must be reported. I got hurt @ CP one time too on "The Whip". It beat me so hard against the side I had a major bruise on my hip. I strained my arms trying to keep from slamming into the side. A fun thing was not so fun. No rides for me, anymore. Not there.

  • Posted By: Big EarlHello good people of WV this is Big Earl and I for one am sick and tired of all these out of state know it all nosey people bothering us if it is not these smelly hippies trying to run our jobs off or rename the WVU mascot now they are calling the good citizens of WV fat. Well people I am here to tell you that this bunch at the so called CSPI and no you hippies I don’t mean the TV show calling us fat should look in the mirror they look like something off night of the living dead pasty faced scarecrows and beanpoles and what is so great about that. WV has some of the best staple foods anywhere in the world I have eaten paotatoes beans meat flour and corn meal all my life cooked in lard and I am not one bit worse off for it and can mine coal with anybody. People all the good foods we eat are natural growed in the garden or on the farm so it should even make a tofu eating hippie type happy. I am more bothered that two states beat us out in the race for the top so I tip my hat to the people of the great states of Alabama home of the best country music band ever and Mississippi but people of WV get busy we have to reclaim our title to best fed in the USA I recommend the Kentucky Fried Chicken with gravy and biscuits as a good place to start our comeback.
  • Posted By: RoaneCo.Actually Jane Doe, growing up I did attend church and read the bible. Being subjected to religion for many years I would not consider myself "confused" or uneducated. If one looks at organized religion with an open mind it isn't hard to see who is confused. For example, you have one bible yet there are numerous religious groups ( methodists, baptists etc...) that believe their interpretation is the only correct interpretation. This is understandable because the bible itself is very contradictive. In my opinion the the bible and organized religion is nothing more than a tool created to control the masses. Yet this tool has pitted man against man, brother against brother, state against state and country against country, not to mention the wars, death and destruction it has caused. I have witnessed in my lifetime many family fueds, broken marriages and busted churches at the hands of organized religion. I have heard the words of hate spoken by christians. I am not confused.

  • Posted By: bonnTo Jane Doe: I am afraid RoaneCo's common sense is more attractive than your comments. Read your last post at 8:58 and see if it shows the Light you are suppose to give. We are suppose to control our anger. Yes, we are forgiven, but it is not a license to keep repeating our faults. It is mercy so we can improve. Viciousness does not become a child of God. RoaneCo., may God forgive us for driving you and others away from Him with our failure to shine the Light of Love. And Jane Doe, I am the one you called ignorant just because I was showing compassion (another expectation of a Christian). It is scary about your child. But that person was not attacking your child, nor joking about it, only disapproving of your outburst. Not very attractive in anyone, especially one called to set an example for others to follow. If you must get angry, use it to accomplish something good. Christians are hated enough WITHOUT cause. Love is the answer.

Thank the Dumbocratic controled house as it will raise the average consumers power bill $175.00 This on top of the energy companies already asking for an inctrase will put such a burden on the American people that only the wealthy will survive. Please write or call our Senators they are the only life line we have left and ask them to VOTE NO on cap and trade. Republicans were overwhelmingly against the measure, arguing it would destroy jobs in the midst of a recession while burdening consumers with a new tax in the form of higher energy costs. And there was plenty to work on in a House-passed measure that pointed toward higher electricity bills for the middle class.Budget Office and the other from the Environmental Protection Agency — that suggested average increases would be $175.00 a year.

Anyone who thinks we can are puffing themselves up bigger than we are.Are we suppose to believe we are responsible for the Ice Age thawing that is suppose to have happened way back when as well? How did that happen? Certainly not carbon emissions. Use some common sense and realize people are using this to line their pockets and gain support for their pet projects. I know- you don't want to hear this, but it is not realistic. Don't let America be controlled with this, PLEASE!! Let us remain free!

  • Posted By: RoaneCo.I do care about the safety of our children Anonymous on Jun 30, 2009 at 09:01 AM, no matter where they are or what they are doing. Our children are our future. What I don't care for is someone like Jane Doe on here week after week preaching her little sermons all the while calling people ignorant and showing her hostility toward others. It has always amazed me how most christians will belittle someone else but the minute you catch them being unchristian like they always come up with the old "we christians ain't perfect". Well I know they are not, but by golly they are the first to judge everyone else. These hyporcitical self proclaimed christians are one of the reasons I turned away from organized religion years ago. I just don't agree with these people shoving religion on everyone else. I respect Jane Does right to religion and I would even fight for her to keep that right, but she, like so many others need to keep their religion in their church and their home.
  • Posted By: Big EarlWell hello again good working coal mining families in WV this is Big Earl and I for one am very disappointed that this cap and trade bill got passed into law the other day no thanks to our good representatives from WV. People all I can say is get a woodpile and a bunch of cow chips because your electric is going to get real expensive real quick. These hippies has run up to Washington DC and boo hooed to them tree huggers and longhairs in the EPA until they got even worse done to our jobs but then again what do you expect from a bunch that has a leaf from a dope plant on there sign like the EPA does if you don’t believe me look on this very website I seen a picture of it. Birds of a feather flock together that’s why the good working people were kept out and not allowed to talk at that hearing and the hippies let in. People these hippies has slandered our great state and coal miners first they bring in professor moonbeam from NASA to insult us then he tucks his tail and runs back to NASA and wont debate Mr. DB then they attack our state university mascot the WV mountaineer. Well people I Big Earl have a solution to this lets call WV the “Ivory Soap State,” make our mascot a bathtub that’s a sure fire way to get rid of these smelly hippies and longhairs and keep them out forever.
  • Posted By: MEWe christians are most always judged by our actions and that is to be expected since we are not perfect in any way. We all make mistakes every day,we get angry,we say things we shouldn't and act out our frustrations sometimes to those closest to us and our friends. We try to do better and ask forgiveness when we do stumble from our christian path. Actions speak louder than words at times, good or bad. Yes we adults act like children at times and children try to act like adults all too soon. We never know who we are influenceing with our actions and words so we need to always try to act,say and do what is right. As long as we are on this earth we will stumble but we should strive to be the best we can be and treat people with love and respect no matter how we are treated. I have turned the cheek many times and been slapped alot and will keep on doing it as long as I breath. My time will come soon enough to be judged as to the way I have lived and treated people.

He was a morally bankrupt person who the media has presented as an icon. It's no wonder children are so messed up today, too much TV and not enough parenting. You too, are responsible for making him appear as a person to be looked up to. He and others in entertainment and sports are not what the children need, they need moral examples to look up to, please stop the glorification of immoral and indecent individuals.
  • Posted By: food for thoughtTo those of you telling me to watch out for Fox news, please go back and read carefully what I said about the media and the government. I thank each of you for your information. I am not out to attack anyone whether acclaimed or the average joe. I just know what I have read from reports and from different sites. This information is what our scientists, meteorologists and so forth use in reference to report the records of weather and temperatures. Again thank each of you, and at last Fox news was the channel the fine people at our local (American made) dealership had channeled on the tube, personally I just watch WSAZ, at the local level.
  • Posted By: Roane Co., why are you not concerned about the safety of small children at amusement parks?
  • Posted By: HtiekRight on Kris you tell em about Fox News. Everyone that watches knows that the dependable networks are ABF, Anyone But Fox. I am just like everyone else in the know, they lie all the time but please dont press me to cite anything specific as I am having coffee right now. I am new to your side, so pardon me if I get something confused. Those photographs of the ice caps are proof positive as far as I am concerned, these flat earth types that dont believe global warming should compare them to the satellite picutres from the colonial period and over the years since for comparison purposes. I once heard the hottest year on record was in the 1930s but what does that prove. And before one of you know it alls talks about Al Gore riding everywhere in a private plane and having such a huge house and running a company that profits from selling carbon credits, some people in life earn their special privileges simply by showing up and enlightening the rest of us, so there.
  • Posted By: polar ice capsthe weather is always changing.sometime it freezes sometimes it melts, thats gods doings, not mans.wasnt it the great mind of ted danson many years ago that explaind that in 15 or 20 years that the oceans were going to raise so many feet that it would destroy and overflo inward to apolipicate level.i guess the people that live on these coast lines dont know they are under water.we americans are so silly.let me explain what a great creator said,it rains but the oceans are never full.ice melts but the oceans never overflo.i think i,ll believe him instead of a.gore or ted danzen.p.b.s last week on a travel show,,i think,,,,the guide said the glacier there had been melting 150years.that was certainly before the industrial revolution.as for fox, world net daily, newsmax, etc.the liberal press has lost it monolopy on liberal so called news.
  • Posted By: RoaneCo.After you finish showing your true colors, go back and read my post again Jane Doe. Better yet let me cut and paste it for you. "I do hope your little girl is ok. I have children of my own, I know how precious they are." And just for the record, I would never "make fun" of a child, but don't think for one second that I won't point out an adult being hypocritical. Are you not the same Jane Doe that three weeks ago was preaching about God, then in the same breath calling someone "IGNORANT"? So let me say it one more time, I hope your little girl is ok. As for you, thank you for proving once again how kind, loving, patient and understanding some of you fine christians can be.
  • Posted By: KrisThis respectfully goes out to "food for thought" for what they said about fox news and global warming.FOX has great movies and tv shows but their view when it comes to the "news" is so far on the "right" way of thinking that it totally obscures reality in their opions of the subject at hand. They'll twist their views to make sure that it is opposite of "liberals" or people on the "left" and how they feel about the subject.Asf or global warming, we have actual time lapsed pictures of the polar caps melting at an alarming rate. You can actually see it happening. If things are cooling down, then why are the polar caps and icebergs melting at an alarming rate? The evidence is right in front of our faces. I sure do hope you're right because if I am, our planet is doomed. Sincerely, Kris

He never held a real job, never ran a business, just a rabble rouser and agitator. How do you feel about cap and trade energy tax? All over a phony problem that doesnt even exist; WV will wither away to nothing but hey we can all get jobs in the windmill factory, cant we? How do you feel about having your health benefits taxed to pay for Obamacare? How's the hope and change working out for everyone? What do you think card check is going to do the economy? Check out an article about Obama the African Colonialist on the American Thinker Website, dated June 25th. It explains him to a "T." Obama is a wrecking ball, and he's gonna roll over everyone.
  • Posted By: Big EarlWell hello again good working coal miners of WV this is Big Earl and people I have come to the conclusion that we need some friends in Washington DC that has got some clout. Some people up there has got big names but nobody apparently listens to, that is if they show up at all in court to help you out, those who are sick are excepted. Then there are some people in Charleston who should be in Washington who shall remain unnamed because nobody in Gov. Joes office asked me to say that. But remember who had that bunch from FEMA down here handing out checks before two weeks after the flood water hit and figure out who has clout. You people that went up for the hearing last week should be thanked but the good people never got to say a word but these hippies did, they are apparently now running around the creek with microscopes looking for fish that cant be seen with the eye, something called a microbe, now they are blaming the coal miner for killing off this worthless animal and I sincerely hope Captain D or old Long John will never put some slop like that on my plate when I want good seafood. If you dont see it it cant be of no good use anyway, sort of like a certain US senator with a big rich name who was nowhere to be seen last week.

  • Posted By: Big EarlDid any of you people see those PETA nuts on the TV 3 news last night boo hooing about having to tie there dogs up hello again working people of WV this is Big Earl and I don’t know about you but I always thought it was rude and inconsiderate and just being a bad neighbor to let your dogs run wild all over the neighborhood digging up peoples backyards rooting around in garbage cans and doing there business all over the place. Have any of you people in Huntington ever lost a chicken to a wild dog. Even these back to nature types and hippies up here in Boone County tie up there dog to guard there dope patches but they don’t have no sense anyway if they aint going to Washington DC to try and rook us out of our jobs by carrying signs and yelling about some invisible fish that is no good to anybody they are screaming about the coal miner killing polar bears and other animals that don’t even live here. Apparently this bunch had the bright idea to go down to the park on Sunday down in Huntington when people was out with there families trying to walk around and enjoy things and they chained themselves to trees with real dog chains trying to get people to sign a protest petition to of all people a mayor named Wolf now I don’t know about you but that mayor better forget the beware of dog sign he needs to put a beware of the PETA nut sign up in that park.
  • Posted By: The Seeker@food for thought: It is indeed important to check facts, and it heartens me to see that you're of the type that actively seeks them (even thought I fall on the side of the debate that believes in climate change, as it has solid science behind it). However, I caution you on taking anything from FOX news at face value. This is an organization that in 2000 won a case in Florida appeals court in which the court ruled that FOX has no obligation to tell the truth to it's viewers, and can misinform the public under the first amendment. This is also an organization that has been proven to have an agenda, and frames every bit of it's coverage to favor one political party over the other. My advice is to seek out less obviously biased news sources, especially in cases such as global warming, which is an issue that transcends political parties and affects every being on the planet.

Just wanted to check in.
  • Posted By: what is foor for thought?foor?? for thought, you do know Bush made those he commissioned to study it alter their reports when he found out it supported global warming, don't you? Anyone who just sees pictures of the ice caps 30 years ago and now would have to be mentally handicapped not to know there's global warming, the only thing that's possible to debate is the cause of it. Wonder why Fox didn't mention the Bush fiasco? Well I don't really wonder.

  • Posted By: Lou AnnIve had a similar bad experience at camden park several years ago. Havent went back since. The pricing is just another deterrent to doing business locally. I love this area but am very discouraged by the lack of pride in our appearance in several of our towns, the prices of doing business, the attitude towards the customer , the lack of merchandise. I could go on. We definately are not tourist friendly in the great ohio valley area.
  • Posted By: foor for thoughtLooks like my comment on June 24th may be right. I have done some reading about this Global warming fad the government is putting on. I was sitting in a local car dealership and FOX news was reporting on the government sitting or "burying" studies by two of the highest ranking EPA officials contradicting this myth. Some of the comments from their studies proves the Global temperature if anything has decreased. Although, you should be skeptical about anything the media reports especially when it involves the government these are facts that have been recorded over time. I ask how come when these bozos as Dr. Hansen whom is from NASA(which has done innumerable amounts of damage to our air with their testing) never mention facts as these when trying to prove things they are claiming is a fact. People we in America have became lazy in seeking the truth, I am not disputing anything these scientists and the government tells us, but as we learned in elementary school check facts of both sides.

  • Posted By: ValorieAbout four weeks ago, I sent a letter to Camden Park with a friendly suggestion to open the park to the casual visitor again. As of today, I still haven't had a response from them. There used to be a small fee for admission to anyone who just wanted to visit. Once inside the park, a visitor could buy a corn dog or pay to play a few games or ride a few rides. Now people have to pay a full admission price for all day rides, even when they don't plan to stay all day. A lot of people are grandparents who just want to watch their grandchildren ride for an hour or two. Some are young parents with small children who tire easily. As empty nesters, my husband and I would like to drop by to get a bite to eat, play some games or just walk around. Everyone I have spoken to said they would visit Camden Park a whole lot more if they didn't have to pay the full admission price. I challenge everyone to contact Camden Park and ask them to give the people a choice!
  • Posted By: to gay questiongod is not a cruel and unfair god.we all have our faults.is homosuxality a bigger sin than adultry, pornography, lying, stealing, and the list goes on.the clue to these behaviors is wanting to make our lives better.we cant blame anyone but ourselves for what we do.if anyone doesnt change its what they want to do.but as long as it doesnt affect me thats between you and god.but it is wrong, just as cheating on your spouse is sin.would we tell the adulterer that its not sin and not to try being a better person,i think not.celibacy would be better than the same old behavior.these have been struggle since creation.

  • Posted By: Jane DoeI recently went with my church and my family to Camden Park this past weekend. Me and my 6 year old daughter rode the Spider, We thought it was going to be lots of fun, we were wrong! It was a nightmare! It went on for 10 minutes and was going way too fast! My daughter was terrified and was screaming! I was furious when the man that helped us off asked if she was okay and I said what do you think and he laughed!! I have rode this ride for many years and loved it, But this time I could tell it was different! But then it gets worse, A friend of mine that stayed at the park longer than us informed me that after we left, The spider closed down and said they had crossed wires and the ride was malfunctioning!!! My daughter can't hardly walk today and has a four inch bruise down her back! I'm taking her to the doctor in the morning. If there is something seriously wrong, I will be speaking to the owner and this situation will be takin care of!!!!!
