Senator Robert C. Byrd remains in the hospital after falling at his home Monday night
Byrd spokesman Jesse Jacobs said Thursday that follow-up x-rays have indicated that Senator Byrd suffered no broken bones, but as a precautionary measure, he will remain in the hospital and undergo physical therapy at Walter Reed Army Medical Center to ensure he is steady on his feet when he returns to his Senate duties next week.
Jacobs say 90-year-old West Virginia Democrat came to his office Tuesday and was on the Senate floor to vote for an Indian health bill.
But Jacobs says Byrd's staff advised him to see the Capitol physician because Byrd was noticeably wincing in pain.
He was later was admitted to the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington.
Jacobs says that according to Byrd’s daughter, the senator wants to get back to work as soon as possible.
Jacobs also says that since he has cast a record 18,241 votes, he is anxious to get to 20,000 and being in the hospital does not help that effort.
Based on the fact that he is 90 years of age and his position as President Pro Tempore of the Senate, I think they are just taking some added precautions.
Byrd is third in line to the presidency as Senate president pro tempore. He also is chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
