Snow Treasure versus Trash

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Narrative

The vent line has been abnormally hot this Wednesday as the snow pattern has left some disappointed. No threats of bodily harm yet, but as I learned playing hockey, always keep your head up! For the record, I was a speedy center who was tough to body check and those smarts have served me well in my career as a crack shot (or is that crack pot?) meteorologist.

Of course, the First Amendment to the Constitution gives us all the freedom to express ourselves, so our resident Political Scientist Keith Morehouse reminds me. But a word of caution, I also have that right!

One e-mail in particular made me do a double take today when a reader in Charleston sent a disgruntled message just as a heavy burst of snow was moving into Kanawha County.

Posted by: jackson on Feb 27, 2008 at 08:42 AM
yeah, like "what snow" said...where's the 4" inches or even the 2" here in charleston?

It would soon snow hard for several hours with a fast and furious 4 inches accumulating at Yeager airport with at least 2 inches laying on Slack Plaza downtown! Using my first amendment right, my suggestion, check the radar out before coronating the forecast wrong and the forecaster an idiot!

That’s not to say the forecast was dead on evrywhere. I will admit the flavor of a 1”-3” snow in Southern Ohio and the River Cities sounds a tad high. Many local reports of a general inch or inch and half fell into the predicted range here in the Ohio Valley as did Carl Etterling’s report of 2.75” in Wheelersburg. I myself shoveled a half inch to one inch on the steps where I live in Barboursville.

Much of Kentucky from Vanceburg to Greenup and Olive Hill indeed measured the 1”-3” forecasted. Check out the e-pictures from Olive Hill to confirm! Hey, maybe I can keep my job for another day?

Last night I signaled out the Coalfield region and Kanawha Valley as capable of 2”-4”. I sense that was pretty much on target especially after seeing the snowplows work the runway at Yeager! Still I admit a few e-mails from down south recorded only an inch. Guess you guys didn’t pay your taxes down there! Just kidding.

The forecast in the mountains as usual was dead on. Personally I find predicting the accumulations there easier since there is always less melting and hence more sticking. Richwood was already at 6” by 6 PM tonight, so say the good folks at the Four Seasons Lodge.

Roane Countians say "TC for President" as they measured 2”-4” while Masonites say "throw the liar" in jail as they managed a mere inch! You get the picture. One man’s snow treasure was another’s snow trash.

One final word and I say this with total conviction; namely, if I could forecast the weather down to the town level, I would be making millions on Wall Street not trying to figure who might get a fresh coating to inch of snow tonight.

The science in meteorology is exact in telling you why it happened today. But the challenge in forecasting tomorrow's weather requires not just the math and science, but also good old fashioned imagination and creativity. In that regard I have a lot more dreaming to do!

So let me propose a XXVIII amendment.

THE RIGHT TO FORECAST SNOW

All US citizens should be free to forecast snow as their talents and intellects allow. When those forecasts go astray, no law shall be deemed broken and the citizens of the US should not hold malice toward the predictor.

Case closed!

A gallery of snow pictures follows!

I really enjoy watching your channel on TV, I never miss watching your station for news and weather. So, thanks guys for a good job...

It could be worse, folks. We could have another Rockefeller blizzard. Over the last 10-12 years I have learned to expect the lower accumulation number, such as 1-3 inches. Figure on the 1, not the 3. More often than not, in the tri-state area we are going to be on the low side.

Posted by: Debbie on Mar 3, 2008 at 01:48 PM
I remember as a kid reading a comic strip where a man was calling the weatherman and telling him he just shoveled a foot of "partly cloudy". people have always poked jabs at the weather forecast, so I'd just take it with a grain of salt.

I'M NOT RUDE. IM HONEST. I TEACH MY KIDS TO RESPECT PEOPLE. I NEVER SAID I ALLOWED THEM TO CALL TONY THAT. I SIMPLY SAID THEY HAD CALLED HIM THAT. I DON'T MAKE FUN OF PEOPLE'S LACK OF SPELLING NORMALY. THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T GET IT, BECAUSE THAT WAS HIS REAL NAME, SO I SAID, OBVIOUSLY, THEY DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO SPELL IT. IM A STAY AT HOME MOM WHO LOVES HER KIDS VERY MUCH. THEY ARE VERY WELL LOVED BY THEIR MOTHER AND FATHER WHO ARE STILL MARRIED. THAT'S A RARE THING IN THIS DAY AND AGE, SO DON'T FEEL SORRY ABOUT WHAT IM TEACHING MY KIDS, BECAUSE THEY KNOW RIGHT AND WRONG AND THEY ARE VERY INTELLIGENT INDIVIDUALS, WHO WILL CONTRIBUTE GREATLY TO SOCIETY. NO ONE SHOULD JUDGE ANYONE ON HOW THEY RAISE THEIR KIDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW THEM, OR THE STANDARDS THEY TEACH THEM. THIS BLOG IS ABOUT WEATHER, NOT CHILDREARING ABILITY.

Posted by: michelle on Mar 1, 2008 at 09:30 PM
LISTEN MISS MICHELLE. I'VE APOLOGIZED ON HERE TWICE TO TONY. I DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING DEROGATORY ABOUT YOU, SO CHILL. YOU NEED TO WORRY ABOUT YOU OWN KIDS, OR ARE THEY PERFECT LIKE YOU.

Posted by: lacy on Mar 1, 2008 at 06:49 PM
i feel sorry for poor michelles kids, what is she teaching them? raising a bunch of "winners" .....yeah, sad....then u are so childish to make comments about peoples spelling? you AND your kids are rude!! we love you here in grayson, ky Tony!!!

Posted by: Michelle on Mar 1, 2008 at 02:05 AM
Meteorologists have terms called watch, warning, and advisories. These are used because there may be a chance of it, but not guaranteed. It's a shame that someone would let their kids call someone a liar. My parents taught me better and I will never let my kids be allowed to do it either.

Posted by: MICHELLE on Feb 29, 2008 at 11:42 PM
SORRY TONY IF I OFFENDED YOU, AND SOME OF YOUR VIEWERS. IT'S RATHER HARD TO SEE YOUR KIDS WATCH THE WEATHER SO INTENTLY, AND HERE THERE'S GOING TO BE 2-4 INCHES, AND ONLY WAKE UP TO A DUSING. I REALIZE YOU HAVE NO CONTROL OVER MOTHER NATURE. EVERYONE HAS A BAD DAY, INCLUDING ME, AND UNFORTUNATELY WHEN I LEFT THE FIRST COMMENT, I WAS HAVING A BAD DAY. SO I'LL CUT YOU SOME SLACK TONY, NO ONE IS PERFECT. I'M A SNOW LOVER TO THE CORE, AND I GET A LITTLE BENT OUT OF SHAPE WHEN I DON'T GET MY SNOW. AGAIN TONY, SORRY.

Posted by: Jason on Feb 29, 2008 at 09:18 PM
Hey, I don't know alot about the weather. But I do know one thing, I have been here for two weeks and it has rained or snowed every day I have been here. Leaving tomorrow!

Posted by: citizen on Feb 29, 2008 at 09:10 PM
Only Mother Nature knows Mother Nature, what Tony does is try to help us. Secondly I have yet to meet the perfect person. For the people criticizing then do it yourself.

Posted by: Michelle on Feb 29, 2008 at 07:14 PM
I agree with Pam. Just change the channel. Nobody but God can predict the weather exactly. That's why the meteorologists say "Snow Advisory" or "Snow Watch" because they aren't 100% certain, just the possibilities are more likely. (I'm not the same Michelle with the 2 kids that are calling people liars. My parents taught me better than to call people liars and I'd never let my kids do it either.)

Main Entry: 1fore·cast Pronunciation: \-ˌkast; fȯr-ˈkast\ Function: verb Inflected Form(s): forecast also fore·cast·ed; fore·cast·ing Date: 15th century transitive verb 1 a: to calculate or predict (some future event or condition) usually as a result of study and analysis of available pertinent data; especially : to predict (weather conditions) on the basis of correlated meteorological observations b: to indicate as likely to occur Come on people! Notice the words "calculate","predict" and "likely". I'd like to see some of the complainers do what Tony does everyday.

Posted by: Patty on Feb 29, 2008 at 05:25 PM
I don't really care if the weather is right or wrong. God gives us the weather and we take it as it comes. We can't complain about God.

Posted by: Kristy on Feb 29, 2008 at 04:18 PM
I have to go on record for you Tony. I for one look at what you say and the weather map. Some people doing these blogs obviously don't know how to read a map. It is proven that a great deal of Americans can't even locate the town they live on a map without examining the map closely. If you live in Huntington and are looking at the wrong spot, you will see the wrong amount or forecast. These people need to take a science class as well as a geography class. They wouldn't give you so much crud if they knew anything. I am just waiting on the forecast that gives us lots of snow! How about a March Blizzard like the one in Randolph several years ago? You do a fine job Tony. Keep it up.

Posted by: michelle on Feb 29, 2008 at 03:16 PM
I'm sorry Tony if I offended you, and it's obvious that I offended some of your faithful viewers. It's heartbreaking to see your kids watch the weather so intently hoping for the snow days that we used to have when we were young, only to see a dusting, after hearing 2-4 inches. I realize it's not an exact science, and that you are only making your best scientific opinion. To be honest I guess I was surprised to see you retaliate to the guy when you posted that blog. No one is perfect like some people have stated, and guess what, maybe I just had a bad day when I posted that, you know the same way Tony could have had an off day. So again, Tony, sorry for the opinion of a mere human that also makes mistakes.

Posted by: Kathy on Feb 29, 2008 at 02:31 PM
Sorry Tony for the rude comments from SOME people who don't understand just how difficult forecasting the weather in the region can be. I for one appreciate the extra time you take to explain things in your blog which you don't have to do. You have a way of making the weather reports more interesting. Thank You!

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 29, 2008 at 02:16 PM
Robert why dont you quit trying to tell Tony how to do his job? Its called a prediction, and just because he says that there will be delays and school closings doesnt mean that the superintendent of schools has to cancel school, if you have a beef with school closing then call your board of education and complain, dont blame Tony...and why dont you get a job forcasting the weather if you think you can do any better.

Posted by: Kasey on Feb 29, 2008 at 01:08 PM
I agree with Amy unless you can start predicting the weather then shut up. I am sure he doesn't comment on your occupation if you even have one. A lot of you need to grow up.

Posted by: Noble on Feb 29, 2008 at 11:52 AM
I will give you one more winter to produce a snow filled winter or even a cold winter(1976-1978). If you fail I will have to release you and sign a free agent meteorologist.

Posted by: Pam on Feb 29, 2008 at 09:48 AM
I think you make the weather interesting. Keep up the GREAT work. People if you don't like watching the WSAZ weather don't complain just change the channel.

Posted by: Ron on Feb 29, 2008 at 07:12 AM
Sorry Michelle, gotta take issue with you. You're "Cava-liar" would have just been a "joke" had you not gone on and on about Tony "seldom being right" and calling Tony "rude" for explaining himself. The only "rude" comments I've seen are those directed at Tony. Not many professions are done in front of everyone to witness and critique. It would be interesting to have a camera follow you all day long and see whether or not you make a mistake or two over the course of the day. It's ok to make a "joke" but what you posted was a mean-spirited jab at a guy trying to do a job. Tony must not be too bad Michelle, you and your family are still watching!

Posted by: otto on Feb 29, 2008 at 06:33 AM
Hey Michelle, I can spell and you still don't make any sense. Plus if you feel the need to explain the joke of your 12 year old you are just sad.

Posted by: michelle on Feb 29, 2008 at 04:16 AM
to randy and tammy. I think you all need to read my comment again. If you all can spell that is. I said my kids called him tony "cavaliar" get it "liar". Maybe you people don't know how to spell. His actual name is spelled cavalier. Before you make comments saying mine make no sense. At least learn to spell. It was a joke people, chill.

Posted by: Prink on Feb 29, 2008 at 01:34 AM
This was pretty entertaining to read, thanks Tony. I don't hold it against you or any meterologist that the weather for our region has been incorrect all winter. I live in Johson County, KY and so far we haven't been given a correct prediction this winter from any station. But, how can one accurately predict something as sensitive as the weather? I try not to get my hopes up because it never happens. This past "snow storm" put us borderline of 1-2 inches or 2-4 inches with another 1 inch predicted for the following night. But all we got was maybe 3/4 inch the entire time. And it melted in the daylight. It was very disappointing, and it always is.

Posted by: RANDY on Feb 29, 2008 at 12:00 AM
MICHELLE IS SO IMPRESSED WITH HER CHILDREN SAYING" TONY CAVALIER" THATS A GOOD ONE....BUT I THOUGHT THAT WAS REALLY HIS NAME, HMMM...

Posted by: lorna on Feb 28, 2008 at 11:57 PM
these west virginian's are so petty.

Posted by: Tammy on Feb 28, 2008 at 11:55 PM
um michelle you said your kids call him tony cavalier, oh how clever of your children, i mean the one is only 12 and knows someones first AND last name, you should be proud.your comment made no sense at all! lol

Posted by: Roger on Feb 28, 2008 at 11:39 PM
To paraphrase Mark Twain, Everyone complains about the weatherman, but nobody wants to try his job. You are the best in the Tri-State Tony, keep up the good work.

Posted by: Lydia on Feb 28, 2008 at 11:04 PM
We all know that meteorology is not an exact science. Thus the terms "weather prediction" and "forecast" which suggest an educated guess. I'll be the first to admit that I have not seen as much snow as I'd like to, but it is not the fault of our meteorologists.

Posted by: Tootsie on Feb 28, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Tony, some of us viewers support you. You are more often right than wrong. At least schools listen to you and call off school. Better safe than sorry I always say.

Posted by: Amy on Feb 28, 2008 at 09:48 PM
If any of you rude commenters have a direct line to God, perhaps you could give the weather forecast a try. If not, stop being so judgemental! Get a life!!!!

Posted by: EC on Feb 28, 2008 at 09:44 PM
Tony has missed a lot of forecasts over the years, but who is perfect? We all know you cannot depend on computers. Heck, it even looks like Al Gore is wrong about global warming. The old generations used to forecast the weather by saying if the smoke goes up, it will be pretty. If the smoke goes toward the ground, it will be bad. If the cattle goes to the barn when it starts to rain it won't last long. If it rains on Monday will have rain the next 3 mondays. Who knows?

Posted by: Colonel on Feb 28, 2008 at 08:56 PM
I personally think it's the mysterious "haze" from the John Amos smoke stack that forms a "bubble" over the Kanawha Valley which diminishes Tony's snow amount prediction. Keep up the vigilant work you do informing us of potential bad weather. I for one, would love to see a significant measurable snow like the old days-it's global warming.

Posted by: Brian on Feb 28, 2008 at 08:18 PM
Ive said it many times to Tony in emails....YOU THE MAN Tony!!!....

Posted by: Lester on Feb 28, 2008 at 07:33 PM
Some people have way, way too much time on their hands if all they have to do is get on here and call down a weather man. You cry when it's cold, you cry when it's hot. Gezzz, give it a rest and learn to live with what you get.

Posted by: Robert on Feb 28, 2008 at 06:26 PM
Tony you may have the right to forecast snow, but you have no right to play school superintendent. These guys watch you and when you are already calling for schools to close before the snow hits this seems to be wrong. Example "Plenty of slick roads, school closings and delays tomorrow" Leave the school closings and delays out and go with "Plenty of slick roads" and quit trying to influence when schools should or should not be closed you were wrong on both this year. Ice storms hit and you thought everything would be ok..so schools were open and then recently as late as today calling for snow (which is your right) but not your right to try and influence school delays and closing intentional or not predicting school closing and delays should be left out of your weather forecasting.

Posted by: pam on Feb 28, 2008 at 05:55 PM
Sad to see commments from people who dont understand how hard to predict weather is when mother nature has a way of throwing people for a loop and times are changing to were we really dont know what were gonna get or when. But dont pay attention to the jerks, Tony you do a great job. We got the snow in Boyd County just not in the time frame I rather be prepared and told to expect something than not told and be unprepaired and 1-3 can is a good range keep warning us of weather and keep doing a great job!

Posted by: sambo on Feb 28, 2008 at 05:33 PM
It isn't the weather that is so disapointing as it is the HYPE that goes along with every rain, wind, snow, or dry weather system that gets HYPED-UP by the forecasters. Every storm can't be a tornado, typhoon, hurricane, blizzard, or severe thunderstorm. I'm sure that BREAKING NEWS WITH SEVERE SUNSHINE ALERTS is just over the horizon!

Posted by: Ally on Feb 28, 2008 at 05:15 PM
Well, then there is a problem with the person who has yet to realize that even though it is a science, the accuracy is still not 100%. You know, I get up, look outside and see pretty much what it is doing. I watch the early forecast, but mother nature sometimes throws the computer a curve. Just learn to live with it. This conversation strikes me funny. Take care, Tony

Posted by: Sheila on Feb 28, 2008 at 04:57 PM
Why are there people in this world who do nothing but complain? Obviously these are not well educated people who would seek to make themselves look a fool by bashing a weather forcaster. And if you believe everything you hear then I have an iceberg in Hawaii I would like to sell you. Let me give you naysayers a piece of advice...do your own research. Watch all the forcasters, watch The Weather Channel. I have "Weather Bug" on one computer and the Weather Channel desktop on another. I check the local forcast on my Yahoo homepage. After doing so, I have a pretty good idea on what the weather is going to produce. And even then, here's an epiphany for you, "weather patterns CHANGE". Who would've thunk it.

Posted by: Ben on Feb 28, 2008 at 04:23 PM
Here in Teays Valley I measured 4" of snow this (Thursday) Morning! I love it!

Posted by: Josh on Feb 28, 2008 at 03:12 PM
Here's a revelation--LOOK OUT THE WINDOW!!! People can talk big when they are giving their first name. You are doing a great job, I think you are an excellent meterologist. If you do go to Wall Street, can I get in on that? ha ha

Posted by: snowman on Feb 28, 2008 at 02:48 PM
Will it rain or will it snow, don't ask Tony, he won't know.

Posted by: Kathy S on Feb 28, 2008 at 02:04 PM
See TC? You don't need to worry about the complainers 'cause you've got us...your peeps or posse, whatever you want to call us lol. We're your fan club

Posted by: apalled on Feb 28, 2008 at 01:30 PM
to the 2 mothers that let there young children call tony or anyone a liar please take to heart that god gave you those children to raise not to ruin those children should have been taught never to ever cast judgement on a person in the form of ever calling someone a liar god bless you both please pick up your bible

Posted by: Debbie on Feb 28, 2008 at 01:01 PM
I live in Ona and yesterday morning we had about an inch and a half over the top of a thin ice coating. It melted on the road by midday but sometime between 8 and 9:30 another coating came followed by another inch (maybe slightly less) but fortunately no ice for the most part, so I'd say 1 to 3 was pretty accurate. You're being too sensitive Tony, people have always fussed about the weather folks as long as I can remember. Personally I'm glad we didn't get any more than we did. Did I ever mention I hate snow? Well, not so much snow itself, traveling up and down our hills on it is what I hate. I'm ready for some spring like weather Tony. Care to venture when it might come? I'm gonna hold you to it. LOL

Posted by: Janet J on Feb 28, 2008 at 12:51 PM
so.... people apparently have no life beyond insulting a weather forecaster about hi prediction. thats exactly what they are... predictions. they are not set in stone or written blood, they are the best possible guesses one can make with the information that they have, and sometimes you dont always have as much information as you would like to make an accurate prediction... sometimes you just have to guess. Thats life and if the weather isnt always what they say its going to happen, dont take it out on the person who is probably more educated than you on the topic. When you go to school and study that for years or spend years working to a place of that kind of influence, then you can insult them for making a stupid mistake. till then BACK OFF!!!

Posted by: t.k. on Feb 28, 2008 at 12:49 PM
so the next question, will this be our last snowfall of this winter season?

Posted by: Joe on Feb 28, 2008 at 12:33 PM
It sure does help viewing numbers to go high on the snow amount numbers, not to mention the sale of milk and bread at grocery stores.

I dont think everyone is totally bashing just saying dont "embelish" soooooo much. and yeah if u dont like it change the channel....cause then u will see how the forecasts are so totally different...and i think thts why people get aggarvated so easily....

Sounds like a lot of you people posting here are just mad about the weather and are looking for somebody to blame. Grow up.

Posted by: Tommy on Feb 28, 2008 at 10:43 AM
The beauty of it all is in the Money,.... not the weather. Unlike most jobs, where if you are consistently wrong or incorrect you are fired,.... the weatherman picks up a check every week. Right or Wrong, he or she will still get paid. Therefore, they are much smarter than I, for choosing a career in this field. I am completely jealous, and wish I had chosen the same career path. By the Way,... Tony and the others do the best they can do. When they are right, they get no credit, but when they are wrong, everyone comes down on them. Let's be honest,.... they are doing nothing more than repeating what the computers are telling them. So actually, we need to be mad at the "super" computers and not the weather people.

To Tony Cavalier- Not everyone is right or accurate all the time. We are humans. Apparently, some viewers are not aware of this, and they must be right about everything all of the time. I live in South Webster, Ohio and we did get 3" of snow on Wednesday. It all melted away by afternoon, but we did get it. And some more snow fell last night. If people feel that harsley towards you, they shouldn't be watching. There are other stations they could watch. I however am a loyal watcher. I realize that sometimes the weather is unpredictable or may suddenly change course. Anyway, I think you do a fine job, and to those nay-sayers, let 'um watch someone else or better yet, let them go to meterology school to predict the weather! Keep your head high and keep up the good work Tony C.

Posted by: Jeannie on Feb 28, 2008 at 10:23 AM
To Tony Cavalier: I apologize on behalf of my ignorant fellow citizens. Some must taunt and demean in order to boost their own self-esteem. People often spout off about subjects they know nothing about. I AM SORRY FOR ALL. We love you here in Grayson. We have been watching you for many years and you are a part of our family.

Posted by: DJC on Feb 28, 2008 at 09:59 AM
I've watched Tony ever since he has been at WSAZ. He does a fine job! When I hear there's a storm headed this way he's the first one I want to hear from. Keep up the good work Tony, and by the way I'd love to see you out on the ice playing hockey or see a picture when you used to!

Posted by: KE on Feb 28, 2008 at 09:59 AM
Tony I highly respect you. You try your best and know one is perfect especially when it comes to Mother Nature. The ones that are putting you down if they think they can perdict the weather any better they need to go to school and be meteroligist. That way we can leave them comments about how they were wrong since they think there so much better!!! You go Tony!!!

Posted by: Beth on Feb 28, 2008 at 09:52 AM
If that guy doesn't like the way Tony predicts the weather then he needs to exercise his right and turn the channel. Wouldn't that be alot simpler? Maybe he just had a bad day.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 28, 2008 at 09:28 AM
Here is a concept....instead of making yourself look like an idiot by attacking a weatherman.... simply CHANGE THE CHANNEL!!!

Posted by: Lisa on Feb 28, 2008 at 09:25 AM
Forecasting the weather is very difficult to do. Some of you are acting like these hard working weather forecasters actually cause the weather they are forecasting. When they don't, all they do is forecast it. No one controls the weather and it does what it wants and when it wants to do it. I for one think the WSAZ forecasters do a great job.

Posted by: Brian on Feb 28, 2008 at 09:14 AM
Forecast was correct here in the Cross Lanes area. We received three inches Wednesday and another 1/2 inch has fallen this morning (Thu).

Posted by: Mandy on Feb 28, 2008 at 08:14 AM
To Rachel-you are being repremended! Shame on you and all the other bad mouthers!! Tony has the most accurate forecast around!! So he's not 100% every time-who is? Only GOD controls the weather. So GROW UP AND STOP WHINING.

Posted by: Wanda on Feb 28, 2008 at 07:47 AM
You predicted snow, we have snow. Why do so many want to cry around if it is not EXACTLY the the amount you said. Let them try your job for a day. Bet they would not a snow pattern from a wind gust. :-)

Posted by: Robyn on Feb 28, 2008 at 07:29 AM
Does the song too much time on my hands ring a bell with anyone besides me. Thanks Tony for the getting up and going to work every day and doing your job. Wonder what everyone else is doing?

I think Tony, Todd, Josh and Marina are the best and most accurate in the region. I watch all the time.

Posted by: me on Feb 28, 2008 at 06:48 AM
tony like you said its about science, you said snow, we got snow, wear a coat and have hot chocolate who cares if the clouds don't give up what we expect, we down here, don'thave the final on what comes from the heavens, if we did we would have had 1 big snow after another to make me and my little girl happy. i don't think she has even seen the snow i remember when i was little and that is not right- but if we all try hard we may be able to protect the world enough where i can play in the snow with my grandkids one day!

I hope that cable county has a 2 hour delay

Hey Tony.. I was wondering if you were going to say anything about some of the awful posts this winter about snow. I have read several of them and believe that you had every right to explain yourself. No, you aren't always right, but who is?? I will not pretend to know what all it takes to make a prediction about the weather, there are TOO many factors that affect it. Keep working hard.. I appreciate your hard work and effort. You have many loyal viewers so don't let the comments of those who clearly don't understand bother you..

Posted by: Kathy S on Feb 28, 2008 at 05:36 AM
Well Tony has my loyal admiration. As far as I'm concerned he is THE best in the business around here by far (so is WSAZ period) so please knock off the nasty remarks. As he says, if he could predict things 100%, then he would be on Wall Street or winning the lottery and then he wouldn't have to put up with all the whining and nastiness from some of you. Shame on you! Can you guys do BETTER? I know I couldn't. Tony's usually right on here in Huntington so I have no complaints. I love you TC, keep up the GREAT work! And I want to say THANK YOU to those sending in the great weather photos & TC thanks for posting. I enjoy them very much ALTHOUGH I'm sick of snow. I don't blame you though TC for THAT, but personally I'd rather be somewhere warm...sigh. Anyway, be nice to Tony...he's doing the best he can trying to predict what Mother Nature is going to do & she doesn't always cooperate.

Posted by: Jean on Feb 28, 2008 at 05:08 AM
Here in Huntington, I am convinced we have some sort of protective bubble over us since all snow sort of splits and goes around us! Now, to the real problem. I think weather forecasting is one of the most problematic things to do in this world. You can only follow what the puters say and what you know. You did go to school for this. I have watched you for years and have always figured you can only do the best you can. These people who have to stoop to name calling are pathetic. Allowing a 12 year old to call someone names is not exactly a great role model anyway, so don't pay attention. However, if you would like to know to the minute when I front is coming through, let me know! My body is a wonderful barometer for that. I also have 99% correct record! I can also pinpoint precipitation within an hour or so before it hits here! Don't like it, but hey may as well use my disability for something!

Posted by: Ryan on Feb 28, 2008 at 04:26 AM
Tony, I enjoy the blog and always look forward to reading it. I appreciate the fact that you will "stick your neck out there" and give us your insights on what you believe the weather will do, sometimes days in advance. Keep up the great work. Some people need to grow up and realize that predicting the weather is not an exact science. No one is going to get it right all the time. Rachel and Michelle, Sounds like "sour grapes" to me. If you don't like the forecasts, go to another station. It isn't that hard to do. Just turn the channel.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 28, 2008 at 03:20 AM
We actually saw more snow that you predicted. I would estimate that we have a good 5-6 inches. But I'm not complaining...I love it!!!

Posted by: Snow Lover 2 on Feb 28, 2008 at 02:06 AM
I, too, agree with Snow Lover. You hit it right with us here in the coalfields, but where I am up on top of a hill I have a lil bit more than 3 inches. Closer to 5 inches..keep up the good work Tony and don't let insecure losers get you down! Kudos!

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 28, 2008 at 01:50 AM
Ok I don't think it is global warming but what has happened to the great snows that we had as recent as 12 years ago. I can remember several large snows in the 90's, 80's and heck everyone remembers the 70's. So Tony what do you think the problem seems to be. I think you might even be stumped. It seems your usually right on when it comes to rain but for some reason the models and you seem to have trouble with the snow amounts. We do get the moisture but it just doesn't seem to be in the form of the snow you predict. I'm probably the biggest snow lover in the area especially for the age and when you get on and get me tore up thinking we're getting a big storm to only get this again and again it MAKES ME SICK. I've watched you since you got in town and will continue but please start predicting less and then update later if it looks as if a miracle will occur and we get more. At least I won't lose sleep waiting on that BIG ONE to hit. Tony uses the models to help him decide the forecast.

Posted by: Betty on Feb 28, 2008 at 01:07 AM
TC you were right on here in our town! It snowed as you said it would and I noted a good 2.5inces this morning @ 6am. One must remember that the forecaster is not God and cannot know the weather or "grant it" for that matter! It also bothers me when a weather person takes credit for the weather when it is delivered and praised by their peers. Your job is very important, however; it is not to be taken as if you were able to be "right on" every time. It is a tool people, use it wisely but don't shoot the predictor if it doesn't suit you! The bottom line is we are never satisfied with what we get anyway. If it is hot, we want cool, if it is dry we want rain, etc. Be thankful that we have the plethora of seasons to enjoy and the scenery that comes with it people! It is those like TC that allow us to plan our activities or get a sitter when weather might interfere with the kids going to school and us being able to go to work. Keep up the great job you are doing TC and your team!

My kids call you "Tony Cavaliar" also. Sorry Tony, but you're seldom ever right. One of my kids that calls you that is only 12. I guess that means you don't have to have a college degree to see you're usually off on the forecast. I wasn't gonna comment until I read your rude comments about the viewer. You are paid to forecast the weather. Have you ever heard the old cliche "the customer is always right". Grow up Tony. Concentrate more on forecasting the weather instead of contemplating how you'll react to an email of someone who probably pays the cable company, that pays your salary. Remember Tony, we could all change the channel and watch one of the other leading forecasters. You know, the one who doesn't leave rude comments to his faithful viewers.

Posted by: MaMa Doss on Feb 28, 2008 at 12:46 AM
This is for Rachel i'm wondering if you even know the meaning of predicting Tony only tells it the way the computer models show it but really it's all in god's hand if you get snow or not and as we all know the weather can change in the blink of an eye so you can only predict what you observe from from the computer models but god can change the direction of that model in a blink so before you go blaming someone for the weather not going the way they predict think about one important fact. GOD is the controller of what weather we see and he has given people the knowledge and tools to try and forcast the weather with the means that they have so when the weather doesn't go the way that Tony has forcasted i don't blame him i just say well it's just God's work and this is how he wanted it. Tony your a wonderful weather predictor so keep up the good work and ignore bad comments they just don't understand, your job is not a easy one.

Tony, I wanted to let you know it's snowing pretty good here in northern Wayne county...looks like about an inch and a half out there now (11:30 pm). Tomorrow just might be the day for playing in the snow!:) I look forward to reading your blog every evening. Keep up the great work!

Posted by: Snow Lover on Feb 27, 2008 at 11:28 PM
Ok, Im so sick of hearing all these ppl whine about Tony....honestly if you dont like what he has to say WATCH SOMEONE ELSE....its that simple. I personally have and will always watch wsaz. No one can get everything right all of the time, no one is perfect. I think he does a fine job on the weather, we may not always get the "amount" he says we will, but we almost always can plan and prepare ahead based on his forecast. So to you Tony, I say thank and I am sooooooo GLAD you gave it right back to these hateful, nit-picking ppl : ) Btw I live in the coalfields and we did get about 3 inches or so and its still snowing here !! YAY!!

Posted by: Leah on Feb 27, 2008 at 10:52 PM
Tony, I love the snow we received today in Mingo County. I have been waiting for a long time for a good snow fall. Keep the snow coming!!!! and lots of it!!!!!

WOOHOO Tony we finally got snow here at Ben Creek Wv thats down in the Coalfields where very seldom we see snow but this time you were right on it Thanks Tony i think you do a wonderful job keep it up. I love WSAZ their the greatest. And Tony i just know the kids are lovin it. again THANKS.

Posted by: Rachel on Feb 27, 2008 at 10:48 PM
My kids call you Tony CavaLIAR because they say you nearly always get it wrong. I stopped watching long ago. You became a weather predictor (and get paid to do it) so you need to learn to take the criticism. Your blog was heavy on the sarcasm and a little condescending. I felt like I was being reprimanded. Remember, you want viewers to watch you!

Posted by: Eddie on Feb 27, 2008 at 10:37 PM
To Hmmmm......: You are so RUDE! Maybe you should give him more credit than that!

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 27, 2008 at 10:21 PM
Good for you, Tony. I don't understand the hate. It's called 'forecasting' for a reason people. We got the snow as predicted. Even if we hadn't, I wouldn't complain. You try to do Tony's job. It isn't easy.

Posted by: snow seeker on Feb 27, 2008 at 10:02 PM
Tony they are hinting at another mid week storm in lex - do you see that. keep up the good work !!

Way to Go Tony! I'm so glad you stood up for yourself! You are only human and I'm sure these unthoughtful, rude comments probably bother you sometimes. But kudos to you for giving it right back!

What a great blog, love your humor. :) Though the prognosis is off many time in South Point, when you look at the overall picture, your prediction is great. I applaud your effort, and thanks for another great blog. :D

Im not mad at ya Klondike Tony! We only got about an inch on Tallow Ridge in OH, but hey we still got a snow day! Keep on predicting! You make it exciting, even if it doesnt always pan out =)

It's ok Tony. We were hoping for a big snow, but only got about a half inch here in northern Wayne county...I'm still hopeful for a big snow before winter is over though.:)

So hows the hope and change working for everyone? Another half million jobs lost in June. Trace it back folks, the economy went belly up when it bacame apparent the democrat party was going to nominate a radical, ignorant, inexperienced marxist to their ticket. Economists tell us that full employment is considered at an unemployment rate of 4.7%, a year ago unemployment was at 5%. But you all know, Bush was soooo stupid. Look at how the war in Iraq turned out...ooops can't use that one, look at how great the economy is now...oops, can't use that one...well everybody hated us when Bush was in office and now everybody just loooves us and helps us out in the world, well, oops, look at N. Korea, Iran, can't use that one. Some of you really got fooled.

  • Posted By: food for thoughtWSAZ I ask of you please do a a follow up story of the 6 weeks of rain that we had so some of these people who have forgotten will have some miniscule sense of thereselves to know that ALL THAT RAIN would cause flooding anywhere. Here is another story. Find UMWA president MR. Roberts and ask him why he hasn't come out and had his brothers and sisters to be involved in keeping there MTR jobs. All these people that say Massey is a Union breaking company should be worried in salvaging the jobs they do have. It's not rocket science, UMWA supports Obama, in return Obama may reward them. This may be from left field but believe I am on to something. Isn't it strange the protesters only target Massey. Most of them are led to believe there are NO union jobs in WV. HOW STRANGE!? Here is the hunch I have WV politicians don't like Don B and the Union supports Obama. So sounds like a money trail to me for the hippies. Just a thought, but makes for good reporting. Big Earl lets make the idea reality!

  • Posted By: DianeBuck, I agree. When it comes to kids playing sports (not just in the summer), the parents are CRAZY! These parents also seem to be the really high ego type person. funny thing is if the parent was so good then why arent they pro or at least a great college player. what i have noticed is the the kids w/ the parent who did play college or was on the verge of being pro does not press the issue. they allow the kids to play ball. just my opinion
  • Posted By: Big EarlWell hello again good working coal people of WV this is Big Earl and I hope everyone had a nice holiday wouldn’t it be nice if we could have a holiday or one of them permenant vacations from all the tree hugger types and hippies that are barging into our communities uninvited tying to run all our jobs off. Well good people I am calling on those who have the means to do so and you know who you are so lets pony up some cash and have our own protest here in the coal fields to support our coal miners. I seen on this very TV station where the tree huggers held a rally and a cookout with a bunch of Grateful Dead hippie wanttobees singing about the trees and polar bears but we can do one better. We can have it down at the coal festival in Madison people I say invite some real singers who aint got above there raisin like WV adopted son Mr. Charlie Daniels and how about Alabama since they have coal down there to. Invite Gov. Joe and them people from Washington DC that is a good way to find out who is pretending to be a friend of coal and who is really on our side. We could even make Mother Jones bobblehead dolls to give away I for one would like to see her set loose on these tree huggers that have invaded Cabin Creek trying to run off her beloved coal miners. You could pull a string and she would say #** !!##**!! Tree huggers.
