CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power are seeking a $156 million rate increase.
The American Electric Power subsidiaries requested the 17 percent increase Friday in a filing with the state Public Service Commission.
If the increase is approved, residential customers using 1,000 kilowatt-hours a month would see their bills increase by more than $9 to about $74, beginning in July.
Appalachian Power President Dana Waldo says about $134 million of the revenue generated would cover higher costs for fuel, primarily coal, used to generate electricity, and for purchased power.
Another $17 million would pay for pollution control devices at the John Amos and Mountaineer plants.

THEY ARE RAPING US HERE IN VIRGINIA AS WELL. SOON THEY WILL HAVE A REVOLUTION ON THEIR HANDS AND MAYBE VIRGINIA AND WEST VIRGINIA WILL SUCEED FROM THE UNION SINCE NO ONE IN THE FEDERAL GOVERMENT CARES WE HAVE TO BE VIGIL WITH OUR ON STATES GOVERNMENT TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR PEOPLE DON'T HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THEIR MEDICINCE AND EATING DOG FOOD. IT IS BEYOND HUMAN UNDERSTANDING THAT STATE SENATORS AND DELGATES IN BOTH STATES HAVE ALLOWED THIS LEGILATION AND STROKE OF THE PEN TO PUT EVEN GREATER PRESSURE ON THE HARD WORKING FOLKS HERE IN THE VIRGINIAS. VIVA LA REVOLUTION!
i think we pay enough trying to keep up with gas prices and rising groceries don't anyone have pity on us
I don't know how the people are going to make it with all the price increases. You work everyday and have nothing left. Where is all these people we have elected to make changes in our government. Sure not for the working people. Big business must own these politicians or they would put a stop to this price gauging.
