NEW YORK (AP) -- New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has resigned. He made the announcement in his Manhattan office.

Spitzer will be replaced by Lieutenant Governor David Paterson, who will become New York's first black governor.

As on Monday, when he made a public apology, his wife stood by his side.

Spitzer says the resignation will take effect on Monday.

Spitzer said he's "deeply sorry" that he didn't live up to what was expected of him. He said he "sincerely" apologizes to every New Yorker.

West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin, who is also chairman of the Democratic Governor's Association, released a statement Wednesday afternoon in his role as chairman.

“I commend Governor Spitzer’s decision to step down from office. He has achieved a number of important accomplishments as Governor of New York, and I wish him and his family the best as they continue to work through this private matter," Governor Joe Manchin said. “Lieutenant Governor David Paterson has a long and distinguished record of public service. He is the right person to lead New York at this critical time, and he has the full support of the Democratic Governors Association. We look forward to a successful transition, and we stand ready to assist him in any way.”

Just by reading these comments, I can see why Obomus is doing so good in this country, it's gone ! Maybe the Republicans can save us and work us to death, we'd be better off out of this world if we get right with God ?

I can't believe you or anyone would truly feel this way. This is wrong for many reasons, the article in the news today is one good example. It has been known and proven that if someone does this, they have did it with the world.. which now contains highly complicated bacteria and viruses including HIV. This is also helping young girls destroy their bodys and supporting drug habits, which is supporting and promoting other crime associated with drugs. This promotes property theft, armed robery, insurance fraud and the list has no end. I can sympathize whih you and your situation, but prostituation isn't the answer for anything. We are all just human, God be with us.

O.K., Consider this, I was married years ago to a wonderful family man. We had two young children. He and I both worked, the typical nuclear family. In 1993, I became ill. The short of it, I couldn't express my feelings physically with my husband. Months and months had passed being true to each other. I felt my responsibility as a wife to offer my husband a solution if he were to desire it. Ultimately, we did use a couple of out of town escort services. Personally, we felt that an escort service fulfilled both of our needs with no long term affair attached. I feared of an affair because of my illness. I loved my family and did not want it destroyed. Before you judge the use of escort services, and the people who use them, it could be consentual for both parties. Who knows, Mrs. Spitzer could fall into the same categorey as I did. We remained a happy family, raising our children, until his death in 2005. I think professional escort services saved my marriage.

Everyone has sinned. Everyone is human. Never say never and do not judge.

Surely after 10 years of visiting these escorts, his wife had to know something was up. No man can hide that long, and use that much money. Seems like his wife likes the life of being a Governor's wife more than being a true family wife.

Resign? Does it really affect his job as governor? I haven't heard of any evidence that his personal actions have in any way his ability to govern New York. Bill Clinton was one of our most popular Presidents, but morally left a lot to be desired.

He should resign as governor, father and husband.
