HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A mentally challenged man was found wandering around Huntington Thursday morning.

He was found around 4:30 Thursday morning in the 100 block of Locust Street.

Shortly after 8AM, Cabell County 911 says the man's caregivers were located and they were headed to police headquarters.

How can you profess to know what this man's disability is just by seeing his picture? You have no idea what diability (or mulitiple disabilities) he has. People who live in group homes or in their own apartments with staff do not take "field trips" to donut shops. Perhaps they wen thter to meet with frineds and share a cup of coffee. For the person who says we spend $300 per day to "provide" for this individual, I wonder where you got your statistics. There are many, many, many budgets that don't even come close to "providing" $300 per day. Why don't you take a look around your community? I think you'd be surprised at just what that money is providing. I'd be willing to bet you have had a service "provided" to you by an individual with a developmental disability that you didn't even know. I would also bet that the space you are taking in our community is more of a waste than any amount of money spent on any individual with a developmental disability!

okay Karen, how is taking care of the mentally ill a waste..have you ever taken care of one? Do you know that pain and humilation some of these people get because of people like you? Some of the mentally ill are tryin to better there selves...not all are using ur money to waste it. They are gettin help...you need to watch what u say because one day it will come back to bite u in the butt.

Even more horrendeous is the fact that our Social Security $$ are being spent at $300 per day (yes per day) to "provide" for this individual!! CHECK IT OUT FOR YOUR SELF! THAT IS $9,000 per month! Let your elected officials know this! I realize that money cannot "FIX" everything...but how can we NOT be aware of this huge WASTE!

First, to Parker. For you to say individuals drinking coffee in Jolly Pirate Donuts reminds you of a scene from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is disgusting. People with developmental disabilities have every right to be anywhere you do and it NOT be considered a "field trip". Secondly, the gentleman is NOT from around here and would not have been here last fall. Concerned Citizen: The GOP has NOTHING to do with the man eloping from the home he was staying at. Before you open your mouth, please be aware that the state pays MILLIONS of dollars every year to help take care of them. Actually, for every dollar the state pays the federal government pays $3. Nothing has been cut!

I have personally taken care of people with this type of disability. I know exactly how hard it is to keep an eye on them. That is why we always had ALARMS on our doors. I know nothing about the place he lives in so I really can't comment on their incompetence. I do have to wonder why it took so long to realize he was missing. Also the lady said "no one was in danger". I have to disagree with that. HE was in danger on the streets of Huntington alone at night. He is a little more vulnerable than some of us and could have been taken advantage of or injured. May God bless him.

Perhaps we as a nation need to provide more services to the elderly and people in need instead of spending $170 million a day (just in Iraq.) Since Bush has been in office he has repeatedly cut funding that would help individuals such as this. Call your representatives and let them know that we need to take care of people in need here before we go destroying and re-building foreign countries. I am pleased that this man made it safely home to his family. Hopefully people will see how this is a result of the GOP cutting funding repeatedly for the poor, elderly, military, and people with disabilities. Wouldn't it be ideal if there were endless funds for helping people and limited funds for killing people and blowing up the world?

This is to all you people who are complaining about typo's, size of pic., about WSAZ. This station is doing what they can to help get info out to us and then you all complain. If it had not been for them whould you have known anything at all about this story. People need to grow up and stop complaining about what I feel is a good job by this station. I am glad that this mans caregivers have been located and he is safe. GOD BLESS this man and take good care of him.

Wow, I bet if a close up was taken people would complain they could'nt see this or that. It seems to me that the madia was doing what they should be doing, "A PUBLIC SERVICE" and they achieved that goal. The man was identified and returned to the safety of his home. Good job to WSAZ, the cops and other media sources for helping someones family member to return home safely.

The small 'thumbnail' image isn't going to help anyone identify this guy...let's get a large photo on the page that we can see...I get the feeling WSAZ is only posting this to appear that they're doing the right thing, but in reality they don't even post a decent picture?! Very sad.

FYI: "wandering" is an actual word that means to move away from the proper, normal or usual course or place. A typo here or there, however, comes with the territory of trying to update a site as soon as information is made available.....even a proofreader or readers can miss the same thing from time to time.

i hope they find out why this man was out on his own at 4:30 in the morning.

Posted by: JG on Mar 20, 2008 at 09:07 AM
Glad to see his family was found and he is unharmed from his little "adventure."

He was found WONDERING? Perhaps you need a proofreader for your website? Lots of errors lately.

I have seen this guy with other mentally disadvantaged people ,in a field trip situation its been a while back but I do remember him they came into the jolly pirate late one nite back in late fall or first part of the winter and stayed an hour they all sat and drank coffee and ate donuts its was a little like the scene in one flew over the cookoos nest where the mental patients go for a boat ride they were having a great time .It was hilarious to see them in the majority and the other customers freaking out.

Posted by: Too sad on Mar 20, 2008 at 07:42 AM
This is sad. If he had been missing, why were there no reports of it? Could he be from another state? Try checking with others states to see if he matches a description of any missing persons. God bless him, I hope someone comes forward to take him home.

Come on WSAZ..you got to get bigger pics/videos How do you expect anyone to be able to even see the man in the pic???

Posted by: hi on Mar 20, 2008 at 07:26 AM
It looks like they could run prints or something, Go to Dr. offices that he would most likely go to. Any work facilities that he could have done. Ohio has an Open Door. That teaches mentally challenged ladies and gentelmen everyday living skills. Good Luck. I fell for him and his family.

Hopefully someone will be able to help..It is bad when people have to suffer..Somebody has to be responsible for those who need constant care...
