JACKSON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Police in Columbus, Ohio, arrested Terry Vance Friday night on drug charges.

The Jackson County, Ohio Sheriff's Department also issued a warrant for Vance's arrest for conspiracy to commit aggravated murder.

They say he's connected to the beating death of Carol Evans.

She was the 72-year-old woman found murdered in her home last month.

She lived on Camba road just south of Jackson.

Investigators say someone staged things in the house to make it look like a burglary, but there were no signs of forced entry.

A Columbus newspaper reports state prison records show that Vance has served time for convictions for vandalism, possession of drugs and burglary in Jackson County.

Evans was found dead in her bed back on March 27.

Investigators say she had been strangled and beaten.

Vance is in the Franklin County jail.

Monday morning, Vance was arraigned on the drug charges.

He was arrested at a Columbus hospital where he had gone to visit his brother. Police say they found Oxycontin in his possession.

The judge set his bond at $500,000. His next court appearance is set for April 21.

WSAZ will continue to follow this story and pass along new information as we get it.

Shasteen and the prosecuter are doing a great job. Those involved will be found. I have faith that justice will be served.

Brother or friend, I would not be trying to cover for Vance at this point, no matter what the relationship. Danny says Vance was with him "that day", but was he with him "that night" between 3 - 5 A.M. when Mrs. Evans was brutally murdered? Sheriff Shasteen is on all of the involved trash like white on rice and they all are feeling the heat! Keep up the great work Sheriff Shasteen...you and your staff are super!!!!!

Posted by: Susan on Apr 17, 2008 at 07:32 PM
Danny is his brother that he was visiting in the hospital when he was arrested.

Posted by: mary on Apr 17, 2008 at 11:12 AM
In response to Danny's remark that "he was with me that day". Be very careful Danny saying that you were with Vance. Someone might be calling you in for questioning. Choose your friends wisely and be careful who you try to provide alibi's for.

There was a big drug raid in Jackson Ohio this afternoon-over 4.4 million $ street value! Could there be a connection to the husband or some of his friends?

Posted by: Just guessing!! on Apr 16, 2008 at 06:41 PM
I was reading many of these comments! I don't think it was because of drugs. Someone was telling me that her exhusband owned a gas station in jackson, in which is now closed. It closed because he couldn't afford it anymore, so he went to Mrs. Evens and asked for some money. She refused his request. And when this all happend he was supposively in Florida. So think this all may just have something to do with it.

I am so glad that this trash has been arrested. However, it is obvious that there are others involved. What is truly the motive for the murder of this wonderful lady and who is truly behind it all?? Obviously it was not robbery, since nothing was missing. Keep up the great work Sheriff Shasteen, you and your staff are to be commended!!!

We are very fortunate to have such a professional as Sheriff. Sometimes in more rural areas, you get what's left. We got one of the best. Keep it up Sheriff Shasteen. Bring all of the players to justice.

A life long petty criminal, lets spend our tax dollars and keep him in jail for life. Why not three strikes and FRY HIM.

Terry Vance huh? Just one of the many examples of Jackson County trash, always was and obviously always will be. I pray that they also get the other people involved and punish them accordingly.

Mr. Shasteen, the sheriffs dept and the BCI have done a wonderful job so far. Im glad they are taking there time with this case and gathering as much evidence as they can. This case seems to be far from over because i truely believe there are a few others who had something to do with planning and execution of this brutal murder. Please pray that the ones who harmed this angel on earth will all get caught and charged to the fullest extent of the law. And for those who knew her as I did, remember the wonderful memories. Carol was a loving, caring, and respectful woman, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many in the community. Carol Jean Miller Evans, rest in peace. You may be gone but you will never ever be forgotten.

I'm so sorry for her family. She sounds like such a kind, loving, caring, wonderful lady. Someone I would have loved to have met because she was a good person. Such a shame. What a country that we can't even be safe in our homes or even our own beds anymore! I'm glad they caught him & hope they KEEP him in jail. Kudos to the Sheriff and deputies. Wish we had you guys in Huntington to help us. Anon in P'mouth: I'm sorry about your grandmother too. Did they catch the person? I hope so. My condolences to you as well & my thoughts/prayers are with you too as they are with Mrs. Evans family. Such terrible crimes and such waste of lives. So much pain and loss because people are so evil and/or crazy anymore. And drugs. This country scares me anymore because we can't even be safe in our homes, much less in stores, at schools, or walking along minding your own business. My thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathy go out to the Evans family & Anon's God bless you all

My prayers and my heart go out to you. A very similar thing happened to my grandmother in 1997 in Portsmouth. I can understand the anguish and the questions you all must have. God bless all of you during this time and know that she is in perfect peace away from this wretched world.

Unfortunately I never met Carol Evans. I do however know one of her grandchildren very well. The granddaughter I know is a beautiful, caring, intelligent and STRONG young woman. I know the influence of her mother and grandmother helped to form the person she is. My heart goes out to my friend, her mother, and the entire family at this extremely difficult time.

Unfortunately, I didnt have the opportunity to know Carol Evens but my grandmother did... I am 19 years old, almost 20 and I have lived around Jackson County my whole life.. I went to Jackson City Schools my whole life where i just graduated in 2007. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that something so horrific could ever happen here... Not in my home town... There are alot of rumors flying around about this.. but to be honest there are only three people who know what really happened, God, Mrs. Evans and her attacker... If the "wonderful" Jackson police don't catch the murderer God will have his opportunity on judgement day... To the Evans family... I hope they find the attacker and bring them to justice.. I hope this is the one time they do their jobs... My thoughts and Prayers are with you all...

Carol will be so greatly missed. She was an angel on earth.....kind, soft-spoken, loving, and friendly to all. My heart breaks for her family. I knew all of them and they will never get over losing their precious mom. Time does not heal but it makes it less painful. My love and prayers are with all of you.

I went to Sunday School with Carols' kids when we were all very young in Oak Hill, OH. I only have memories of good people, that were honest, christians, with a sense of both humor and humility for life as a whole. For those who are ready to condemn the Jackson County, OH Sheriff's Ofc.; how many of you are willing to help by telling what you know of any given crime in the county? TV shows are one thing, but when people aren't even willing to stand up and help clean up their own backyard, they leave it to the rats. I know the reputation the county has--I've been here all my life--yes, it can be dangerous. Best I can tell, life is dangerous every morning when we get up. Get with it, people.

This is crazy who kills a 72 year old woman? In her bed nonetheless, a coward thats who. Probably someone who knew her and couldn't stand to see the look in her eyes when they were killing her. I hope when they get caught they get exactly what they deserve. The death penalty and SOCF can get the job done. If the punishment's would start fitting the crimes things like this would not happen as much. I just hope that this poor woman did not know who killed her but sadly I bet she did. I agree with the other comments where was her husband at 3am??

I pray that you all receive closure and I know whoever done this will pay the ultimate price. As hard as it must be for the family, I'm sure Mrs. Evans is in a better place. May you find peace, comfort and closure and I will keep you in my thought and prayers. God Bless!!!!

I know the Evan's family very well and I am lucky to have known Carol. She would brighten your day with her smile and kindness. She is one of the most well respected people in our area. It still doesn't seem real. You don't find too many people like her anymore and our community lost a terrific lady. She raised a wonderful family and as for her daughter Debby, words can't explain how wonderful she is, she's just like her mother and I look up to her a lot. Her entire family will remain in my thoughts and prayers as I pray they find who did this to such an innocent person. Hang in there the best you can Evans family. They will find who did this and they will get what they deserve. With Love, God Bless

May many prayers be with the Evans family during this AWFUL time. I couldn't imagine what pain/hurt they must be feeling right now. I hope the person(s) responsible for this is/are caught as soon as possible and brought to justice. He/she deserves to be treated in the same way that Mrs. Evans was. I will admit I initially assumed it had something to do with drugs, definitely NOT implying that Mrs. Evans was on drugs, simply stating drugs are so bad in our community some people will do ANYTHING to get their hands on money for them. Although now, it seems quite clear who the guilty party in this tragic event is, and I hope that this cowardly person is given the maximum punishment that is able to be given. Once again, God please be with the family, and may Mrs. Evans rest in peace. She will be remembered by ALL in this community as a truly wonderful woman.

You know her has Carol Evans, I knew her has granmda even though she wasn't my grandma. I was her granddaughter's friend and she was the sweetest person. She was gentle, friendly and wonderful. Whoever did this to this beautiful person will pay for their actions. God will have vengence on their soul.

Anyone who actually knew this lady, who was only 72 years old (not elderly) and in good health, would know that she was well respected in the community and was an outstanding person. She would've given the last dime she had to help someone out, especially a child. This crime has nothing to do with drugs. The law enforcement agencies probably know who did it, as she probably also knew her attacker. It will just be up to the law enforcement to decide to try and prove it or sweep yet another crime under the rug b/c of who is involved. It is tragic that her life ended in such a horrific way. My thoughts and prayers go out to this family and the community in their time of mourning. No one should have to endure so much pain and suffering.

To: Please! I think you better recheck your own grammer and spelling. Such as:It is track not tracked, Does'nt should be Doesn't. Shool should be sChool. So, the point here is you better check your own stuff before worrying about or making fun of how others speak or spell. Major point is NONE of that was about the lady who died. Do you have information on that? Or is there something you need to say to the police since they are so inept? Seems you can do a much better job that anyone else!

Posted by: Hmmmm...... on Mar 28, 2008 at 02:23 PM
What a terrible world, where even an elderly woman isn't safe in her own home. My prayers go out to her family. For those of you who said that readers who suspect drug involvement must themselves be on drugs, get real. Drugs are the reason for most crime in this area, and it may be the reason for this crime too. That doesn't mean this lady was taking drugs or selling drugs; I assume she wasn't, and I'd be shocked if she was. However, it could have been someone who wanted her prescription medication and she (correctly) refused to give it to them, or maybe they wanted money for drugs and she (correctly) refused to give it to them. Either way, I hope the cops find the person(s) who did this, and put them behind bars forever. Anyone who would kill or even harm an elderly woman has no business walking the streets.

My heart and prayers goes out to the family in this awful tragic situation and to the daughter who found her mother, how awful, I hope they catch the moron who did this and beat him or her to a pulp. I hope GOD has good paybacks for the person or persons who did this awful thing and I hope giult eats at this person/persons. I totally agree with so sad: we do live in a world where punks are addicted and will do whatever it takes to reach their next high they don't have feelings for anyone not even themselves and so sad that we live in a cruel cold world. All we can do is pray and let GOD deal with the bad people and try to help people when you can. May GOD bless the family in this and I hope the get closure.

Since when did this become all for a fix on drugs? I have never seen so many people with one tracked minds, you must be on drugs since that's all you think about. I sincerely doubt that this lady was a drug dealer or that she even had any in her house. There are other motives for murder and robbery than just drugs. I was reading these comments and I just can't believe how many illiterate, simple minded people that there are out there. Does'nt anyone learn anything in shool anymore? My 7&8 year old children have better grammar and spelling. I feel sorry for the family with this pitiful excuse for law enforcement that we have.

Posted by: obvious on Mar 28, 2008 at 08:55 AM
So when did this become solved that this murder was over drugs? It was not over drugs.Even though Jackson County is almost nothing more than drugs and the worthless people who use them, there is more to this murder than drugs. Perhaps it was an act of hate..obviously..an act to get rid of, to move on or bring in someone or something new..i'm not a detective but this seems awful clear to me. It is just terrible that the man who committed this crime was not man enough to take care of the situation properly and took the coward way out. And now he should have to pay. Hopefully the Sheriffs office can figure this one out..if not we're doomed if/when another situation occurs..

i want to let the evans family know my thoughts and prayers are with them. i know from experience what you go thru after a death of a family member, especially one who has been murdered. also i would like to address kevins comments.you said it isn't easy being a cop and people should try it if they think it is. well this comment is coming from and ex cop so i know how things SHOULD be handled and how things are done now is DEFINITELY not done right. as for people helping, what good does it do. you just want to act like the person giving the info is the criminal and nothing gets done. i don't know you and you very well be a good officer but alot of them aren't. i have had problems with someone in the past and had to contact the police because of it and they witnessed some of the threats and things that were being done. but they let the person go knowing i had a restraining order on him and after they had to fight to make him leave. so please stay on the police

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 27, 2008 at 10:14 PM
i'd be willing to bet one years salary that this will be another crime unsolved in jackson but thats what you get when law enforcement officers are poorly trained and also SCARED to do their job after all they were told who robbed a place of business and where to find them but never did anything about it and the suspect is still at large.it really shows where there priorities are

I know most of the Evans family and may God bless them during this time.No one should have to go through such a terrible tragedy. What kind of a sick individual does this sort of thing? I do have to agree that there is a huge drug problem in this county and in the schools as well.As far as Kevin says blamming the police may not be the thing to do but it does seem like nothing gets done sometimes when they are given specific names or places where drugs are an issue. As far as people getting involved I would guess they are afraid because they don't know who to trust in this town. You can bet they know where the biggest part of the drugs come from in this town but MONEY TALKS or does it keep quiet? Just read between the lines on the comments of this page what people are thinking and not saying. That tells it all.

This is a definite tragedy and I cannot begin to understand the depth of loss that this family is feeling and will feel forever. I am sure I speak for everyone who hears of this when I say I can't get you off of my mind and pray that you find justice for your mother. Obviously nothing will ease your suffering or change what has been lost but with your persistence perhaps Jackson County can put a guilty party off of our streets. Apparently she was dearly loved and respected by our community and I hope that you find some comfort in that.

To Kevin, the hardworking police officer, yes we do call the police when we need help but good luck in getting it. The only thing they want to do is check the person calling for help to see if they have a warrant for anything so that they can make more money for court costs and bail. My condolences to the family of this lady who was killed, this is just terrible. I don't see her murder being solved unless their was a drug deal going down when she was murdered. Since that is the only thing that the police seem to worry about these days. It sounds like she was killed by someone she knows since there was no forced entry. Did she have a caregiver? That would be a possibility, the caregiver would know how to get in and where to look for whatever the lady had that was valuable. It's a scary world out there and the police are no help whatsoever, they used to be I just don't know what happened. Every one that I have met has this holier than thou attitude like they are better than me or you. SAD

One inhumane person changed all that. Have faith in God and pray for the investigators, our Sheriff, and mostly, the family. We, as a community elect our officials, it is now that we stand behind those we believed in on Election Day. Knowing the Shasteen family as I do, I know Sheriff Shasteen will get to the bottom of this. He will not rest until this horrible person(s)is behind bars, unable to terrorize his people any longer.

I have known this family since I was a child. I grew up with her children and had her for a teacher when I was in elementry school , she will be missed. It is sad that our small town has come to know such brutality . My prayers are with the family ,what a terriable loss for them.

Chris (Ashland) You like all of us have the option of Changing the channel . If you have a complaint about WSAZ then address WSAZ. What’s wrong with you ???? Why would any normal person make a comment like this in regards to this horrible tragedy. I feel your comment was uncalled for and I would like to apologize for YOU to the Evans Family for your insensitive comment. Don’t you have any thing better to do ???? My thoughts & prayers are with the family..

This lady's daughter is my Highschool english teacher. My teacher is a very kind and loving person. She is so great to be around. I think its horrible for somthing like this to happen to such a wonderful person. My thoughts and prayers go out to the whole entire family.

First of all, our prayers are with the family during this horrible time. BUT...just remember, this is an open investigation and it is possible that this is not a random attack.

This happens to be the only unsolved murder since Sheriff Shasteen has taken office. Please get your facts straight before you post erroneous information. Jackson Cty is lucky to have Sheriff Shasteen in office during this very difficult and tragic moment. My prayers go out to the family of this wonderful lady!

It makes me sick the way people always blame the police for everything i am a police officer and we do real police work not like what you see on tv and if people think it is easy try it. why dont people focus on how they may help because most people dont want to get involved, stop bad mouthing police officers because when they are needed people dont think twice about calling them for help, we as officers put our lives on the line everyday with out one thanks from the public. focus on issuses that need changed not on how you can bad mouth man and women on will stand up for you and maybe not make it back home after there shift to thier familys

MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE FAMILY. THE POLICE DEPARTMENT NEEDS TO WORK HARD ON THIS BECAUSE IT IS AWFUL WHEN A GRANDMOTHER CAN'T SLEEP. OUR STREETS ARE NOT SAFE THIS IS JUST MORE PROOF OF THAT.

I had this lady for a teacher and my children had her as principal. She was truly a wonderful lady. Nobody should have to go thru this. I hope whoever did this burns in hell. My heart goes out to the daughter that found her and to the rest of the family. One can only imagine what they will have to go thru. God Bless them all.

Chris, can't you find a political blog to rant on? This article is not about crazy oxyhead Rush and all the other hypocrtical ranters. My deepest sympathies to this womans family. Hard to believe there are people like this around. But as we hear from Chris, hate thrives.

You know what would make for a good news story? Do and investigation on Jackson County Ohio murders in the last 30 years and see what the number is, and then see how many were solved. I think everyone in the viewing area would be shocked. There are several unsolved murders in Jackson County! May my prayers be with the Evans family in their time of need. this is such a horrible tragedy. I hope they find the person(s) who did this.

I must say that no we should not have to live like this! We should not have to live in fear in our homes or on our streets, the crime in this state and surrounding states is out of control. I am very sorry to hear that Mrs. Evans had to become victim to the latest person or persons looking for a quick buck. My deepest condolensces go out to the family. My parents are elderly also and I dont know what I would do if something like this happened to them.

It goes to show that even in a small town where everyone thinks that they know everyone, not even a grandmother is safe while she sleeps. My thoughts and prayers are with this family as they face this horrible tragedy.

That is just awful, my heartfelt condolences to her family. I hope this case is solved quickly and the person who did this is punished to the fullest extent of the law! I just can not imagine who could do such a thing, beat a 72 year old woman while she lays in her bed.
