JEFFERSON, WV (WSAZ) - 911 dispatchers say Route 60 is back open in Jefferson after a fire at a local motel.

The fire started around 3:30am Wednesday at Smiley's Motel in Jefferson.

Route 60 had been closed ever since, but it re-opened around 1:00 Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters say the fire got out of control very fast and it burned for the better part of six or more hours. We're told by the time firefighters got there the flames were through the roof.

Firefighters believe the fire had probably been burning for almost an hour before someone noticed it.

Investigators believe a gas line inside the lounge could have been fueling the fire.

The motel was destroyed.

any one this is bashing any fire dept paid or vol. needs to ask there insurance company how much there homeowners insurance would be without any fire dept. Once you do that then you can talk all you want if you can afford to have a computer or intenet service to do so. To all firefighters paid & vol. thanks!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 17, 2008 at 11:27 PM
So Justin... What paid department are you on? Or, better yet what volunteer department won't let you on? I'd put you up against my volunteer anyday!!!

Posted by: Scott on Apr 17, 2008 at 11:08 PM
Greetings! Why all of the Bashing! a fireman who gets paid is the same as a fireman who does not.Same training same benifits..helping some one. We all have to do the same thing and theres no diffrance in the city or the rural areas, the state fire comision sets before us. Lets get on board and help and praise each other for the difficult job that we do. And as Matt say's "May all of your Alarms be just one".

Posted by: DOC on Apr 17, 2008 at 09:07 PM
First of let me say that volunteers protect more people in that state than the the paid depatments. As far as the professional firefighters go I myself am a volunteer and i very professional at the department as well as on my job. I am a very well known doctor in the area that as I serve. Let me challenge the Professional and see if they have what it takes to be a true professional a Doctor.

thank you BEV....God bless you too

It sounds to me like someone on here TRIED to be a Fireman and didn't qualify?????? TO JAN- I'm sorry you lost a place that means so much to you. I know how you feel. My Grandfather's house is gone now and it held a lot of memories for us. God bless you.

I agree with Volly FF and FF mom and wife. Sounds like Justin needs to chill. I know I would not want a ff with the attitude of Justin coming to my rescue. I live in St Albans and have Lakewood as my firedepartment. My scout group have even visited them. I AM PROUD OF THEM!! This whole issue has been turned into a mess. Everyone is forgetting what the main issue is. This man has lost his business and people have lost a place to gather. Just thank the Lord that no one got hurt, including a ff. Those who have an issue with the VF's and you want more paid ff's than contact your local officals and they would raise our taxes to provide Paid ffs you'll feel better. Maybe you should think before you speak. They go and sacrifice for you and you are very ungrateful. Look at what people are turning into. What happened to the old way of being thankful for what you have instead of harping about what you dont have.

Posted by: SA on Apr 17, 2008 at 12:23 PM
To agitated, I hope you don't need to use the road I live on ever as an alternate route either. You're probably one of those that park in front of my house to go see your kids or grand kids play ball at Billy Dunn Field. If the city of St Albans had another alternative route I'm sure those people would have taken it instead of using your little crappy Hampshire Drive.

What do you do for a living Justin?

Posted by: Jan on Apr 17, 2008 at 12:05 PM
Everyone is talking about the fire fighters, whether volunteer or paid, but the real issue is the motel itself. My grandparents built the motel and our family had many great times there. I even learned to swim in the pool there. This is a great loss for us and the story needs to get straight. Hopefully, people will remember the good times before the bar came in and the resturant had the buffet. There were many good times had by many families.

Do not forget that there would be alot less fires in WV if it was not for our VFD fire bugs.

Posted by: Volly FF on Apr 17, 2008 at 09:53 AM
I am a volunteer firefighter. My brother is a career firefighter with a paid department. I have friends in several states that are paid firefighters. We have one thing in common. We all think of ourselves as professionals. Being a professional has nothing to do with getting paid; it’s about how you perform your duties. It would be nice if all communities in West Virginia could have paid departments, but realistically, our tax base cannot support this. Rather than criticize, I urge readers to visit their local fire stations, paid or volunteer, and thank the firefighters for the service that they provide. For those of you that do live in areas protected by volunteer companies, VOLUNTEER. I am sure that they would welcome the help.

Posted by: firefighters wife & mom on Apr 17, 2008 at 09:07 AM
First, let me say thanks Bev for your response to my comment. Second, to JUSTIN, I sure hope you are not a paid firefighter, you would be a DISGRACE to your employer and you would never make it as a volunteer firefighter or IF by some chance you would, I and Im sure others would agree, I would hope you never back my sons or another firefighter in a structure fire.......

Posted by: Steve on Apr 17, 2008 at 07:52 AM
Bradley, why you gotta get all angry and type in all CAPS? I was just asking why Tyler Mountain was on the scene, the reason i asked was because i didn't know. I think it's great that the volunteer FD get's out and helps in the middle of the night like that. But i was just asking why, in response to the original poster who was calling them out for not bringing water to the scene. No reason to get all bent out of shape over what i said, sounds like ppl are reading too much into it.

Posted by: Justin on Apr 17, 2008 at 07:43 AM
Yeah yeah yeah, heres an idea if you want to be a REAL firefighter, go take a hiring test and be a REAL one. Heres a question for you all, Do you know why god made professional firefighters???? So the volunteers would have heroes!!!!!!

Posted by: Jason on Apr 17, 2008 at 06:04 AM
Justin, For your information the following paid departments were at the fire: Saint Albans, Nitro, and South Charleston. SAFD and NFD's ladders were both used.

Posted by: BRADLEY on Apr 17, 2008 at 03:27 AM
JUSTIN AND STEVE NEED TO GET THE FACTS RIGHT BEFORE THEY SPEAK. ST. ALBANS, NITRO F.D. LADDER TRUCKS WERE ON SCENE SOUTH CHARLESTON F.D. PUMPER ON SCENE (LADDER OUT OF SERVICE FOR MAINTENENCE) ALSO INSTITUTE, LAKEWOOD, WEST SIDE & TYLER MT V.F.D. WERE ALSO ON SCENE WITH JEFFERSON V.F.D. TO ASSIST THEM WITHIN THE FIRST 20 - 30 MINUTES OF THE CALL. WHY ARE YOU BASHING VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS ALL THE TIME DO YOU NOT HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO WITH YOUR TIME BECAUSE IT SHOWS YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED ON THE SCENE OF THE FIRE. ALSO TEAYS VALLEY V.F.D. LADDER WAS OUT OF SERVICE FOR MAINTENENCE. WE ALSO AS VOLUNTEERS TAKE PRIDE IN WHAT WE DO TO HELP OUR COMMUNITIES IN THERE TIME OF NEED. ALSO WE RECIEVE THE SAME TRAINING AS A CAREER FIREFIGHTER DOES AND WE USUALLY TRAIN MORE THAT THEY DO.

Posted by: April on Apr 17, 2008 at 02:17 AM
Justin: Do you realize how insane you sound? These aren't people who are setting up shop in downtown Charleston where there are paid firefighters. These are people who give their own time in places that have no paid departments. You seem to be bothered by them for some reason. It's your hang up and no one here wants to hear it!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 17, 2008 at 12:06 AM
As a paid firefighter in the state. I'll try and answer some questions as some of you all spend far too much time here at WSAZ typing comments. Remember google is your friend! I teach at numerous state fire schools each year and interact with many fine volunteer FF's. #1 the union frowns on paid FF's volunteering that is why you won't see many paid FF's on a VFD. Some do most don't. 2# A paid fire dept can, will and often does assist a VFD through what is called mutual aid again look it up. 3. using google and not WSAZ read the state fire marshal's web site for the list of required classes for a member or fire dept to be recognized as a fire dept. I'm not from Kanahwa county but I just can't see Tyler Mountain being one of the first depts on the scene. And to the expert on Tyler mountain I can assure you they run far more than 10 calls a year. And 2 gallons of water? You must have been right there when they pulled in? I'd say do a little research before making any post.

Posted by: Very Grateful on Apr 16, 2008 at 10:53 PM
The City firefighters ran home when it got time for there shift to change and never came back just like the Nitro Tire fire. Thank You Jefferson, Tyler Mt and the others for doing what others fear to stay and work.

Posted by: Justin on Apr 16, 2008 at 10:40 PM
Just like we love the volunteers who run people off the road with lights and sirens in their cars. The ones where it takes 10-15 minutes response time. They are like scabs to union firefighters, let me go to your employer and "volunteer" to do your job for free and see how you like it.

Posted by: Bev on Apr 16, 2008 at 09:55 PM
Firefighters mom & wife on Apr 16, 2008 at 03:43 PM: I agree completely and I am thankful for their sacrifice and yours. People if it were not for VFD rural areas would be doomed. These men and women usually work a full time job and still find time to help their community. WHAT DO YOU DO TO HELP???????? Besides bashing everybody else that is. Thank God we have VFDs instead of trashing them.

Posted by: Morality? on Apr 16, 2008 at 09:06 PM
Someone help me but I believed that the paid city fire departments, paid by city tax payers money, were not to respond to those around them and that's why it was the VFD responding this morning. Someone help me there. Also the firefighters end up entering buildings or other areas to save the lives of others (most of us know someone alive due to a firefighter) or they help them when hurt - all while doing it for free. Yet we have to pay our own children to do HW and chores - Try making sense of that - this society of people has a tremendous problem with moral values and human appreciation. I can't believe some of these comments today. I was sad to see the restaurant go, yet finally to Justin and a few others for your comments, you have been voted off the island, do not pass go, and definitely do not ever call 911. Although the same people your insulting would be the ones who would still show up to save your condescending lives.

Posted by: SUSAN on Apr 16, 2008 at 06:41 PM
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO KEEP RUNNING YOUR MOUTHS ABOUT VFD YOU NEED TO SHUT THEM. VOLUNTEERS ARE THE ONES WHO WILL GET UP AND GO WITHOUT SLEEP TO SAVE PEOPLE LIKE YOU WITHOUT BEING PAID. HOW MANY PAID FIREFIGHTERS COULD SAY THEY WOULD DO THE SAME. AS A WIFE OF A VOLUNTEER I HAVE TO SAY THAT VOLUNTEERS HAVE MORE HEART IN THE CRAFT OF HELPING AND SAVING PEOPLE THAN THOSE WHO ARE ON PROFESSIONAL DEPARTMENT WHO ARE THERE JUST TO COLLECT A CHECK. WHY SHOULD ANY OF YOU ALL BE RUNNING YOUR MOUTHS ABOUT THE INDIVIDUALS WHO COULD MORE THAN LIKELY BE THE ONES SAVING YOUR NON THANKFUL BUTTS ONE DAY. PAY OR NOT ALL FIREMAN SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR HONORSHIP AND KINDNESS. SO TO THOSE WHO ARE RUNNING YOUR MOUTHS MAYBE YOU NEED TO THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK.

Posted by: BeNice on Apr 16, 2008 at 06:11 PM
Why is it everytime that something happeens everyone blames the VFD's? My husband is a VFF and I will say that he is more dedicated to helping others for free than most people are to their paying jobs. I work in emergency services, and I work side by side with paid and VFD's and the volunteers are always just as well trained as paid FF's and usually a little nicer to the folks involved. There are many nights he gets out of bed for whatever reason to run a call, no matter what the call or condition he goes. When he leaves I never know if he will even come back. Try to be a little kinder and supportive of those who do the thankless job of protecting you and your family and friends. You may need them someday, and I promise that they will be there.Think about what you would do or how much you would pay in homeowners insurance if they weren't around. Support emergency services, they are there for you!!! Thanks to all the fire, police and EMS who do their job with pride!!!!

o.k. bobby go back to school may I suggest english and as far as sleep tmvfd runs less than 10 calls per year with if your lucky 2 people per call so yea they gave up sleep. anonymous you have not a clue, the paid departments level of training easily surpass thoes of the volunteers. amanda your the bright one thats my whole point HELLO!!!! but gee then we would also have municipal police protection as well, as for all the praise comments about risking there lives you people are so stupid it's funny thanks for the laugh!!!!!!!!

To all the ones bashing the VFDs, let me stress to each of you, I married a former firefighter & Im a mom to 2 firefighters now, my sons both work fulltime jobs and answer calls all hours of the night & when they are not working, then they attend firefighter classes up to four times a year. I know where my boys are, and I know they are helping the citizens of our city which is down the road aways from Jefferson...They assist other VFDs when needed and I'll be the first to tell you, when they are on structure fires, I go along to help hand out water to keep them hydrated, oh by the way, my son went through the floor of a burning house and had to be rescued and transported to a hospital...They are in dangerous situations anytime they respond to a call...Don't bash a firefighter..support them!!!!!!!

Posted by: Justin on Apr 16, 2008 at 03:42 PM
I think it's funny they call poca and teays valley and all ther other volunteer buddies to show up but don't call the paid guys that surround them. Paid or volunteer if your in ot to do good then you call for the closest help. Dunbar has a ladder truck, South Charleston and St. Albans also has them. Volunteers are a big bunch of gloryhounds who wnd up burning most things to the ground!!!

I've lived at the motel for more than a year. This is the second fire in less than two months. Only difference is, this one wasn't caught early enough to be put out before doing as much damage as it did. It is weird standing there... not seeing the Restaurant. Oh... and there's an error in the posted story.. "The motel was destroyed." Isn't true.. only the office, bar, lounge, and restaurant were destroyed. Two of the buildings of rooms have some damage, but aren't destroyed.

Jefferson resident is right. We don't have a good evacuation route. St Albans needs a new bridge and underpass. With the traffic that normally goes east on Rt 60 heading to the bridge this morning, the bridge area was complete chaos. Between the 2 lane underpass and the 2 lane overloaded bridge it took me about an hour to get out of St Albans. When the bridge collapsed in MN Mayor Casto and Mayor Calloway talked a big talk about getting the funds for a new bridge but now that is a distant memory for them. Nitro is out of cash and the City Council in St Albans thinks historic downtown is more important. I've got news for them, no one cares about downtown but just about everyone in St Albans has to travel the underpass and bridge daily. Please get us a bridge before something bad happens.

It's a shame to see Smiley's gone. Seems people care more about the traffic backed up and their own self-centered needs than about the fact that people are now out of jobs, etc. It's a shame how very selfish some people are. My thoughts and prayers are with all the people who worked there, stayed there, and enjoyed a social atmosphere there. To concerned though-Tyler VFD saved my house when it caught fire. They were quick to respond, and they put out the fire which easily could have destroyed my beautiful new home. I only lost part of my 2nd story thanks to them. They were wonderful and I am grateful to all the firefighters who give up their sleep, time with families, and, most importantly, risk their lives to serve us. Thanks to ALL volunteer firefighters, we can rest easily knowing they are there to protect and serve us.

Posted by: Bev on Apr 16, 2008 at 02:32 PM
Remember that there were people living in this motel. It was their home and now they are homeless and may have lost everything. Just because it was in "no man's land" doesn't mean they are less human than anybody else. God bless these people.

I can't believe the way some of you have commented on this issue. You should be ashamed of yourself. You trash talk the fireman and their departments. Do you ever just think for one minute that they are trying to do the best they can and help. If that was my house or business on fire, I would be thankful to anyone that comes to help. No matter how much water, a volunteer or paid professional. You don't have to be paid to do the job. There are more volunteers that lay their life down than the ones who actually get paid to do it. So stop complaining about them and support them. That way they would have better equipment and the training that they need to protect ungrateful people like you. I agree with the local vol. ff that commented. I live in St. Albans and commute to Charleston and you don't hear me complaining. I say the fireman get a big THANK YOU. Atleast there are some people who show their support. Ignore the ungrateful people and keep doing a great job!!!!!

to all of you griping about the TMVFD... being from cross lanes and having many friends that are on the fire department they do a great job at protecting our community!!! i didnt see any of the local fire departments helpin out when the gas line exploded out by camp virgil tate!!! as for people saying that cross lanes needs a pro fire department!!! HELLO CROSS LANES IS OUT OF CITY LIMITS WE CANT GET A PRO DEPARTMENT!!!!!!!!!!

It's a tragedy that the people of Kanawha county have lost a landmark like Smiley's. Lots of great bands have cut their teeth there and a truly diverse demographic has lost a club that was friendly to all races and orientations. I hope LaRue will re-build bigger and better!

Posted by: Bev on Apr 16, 2008 at 02:04 PM
Just wondering why all the remarks about Tyler Mtn. Fire dept.? Kuddos to them for showing up since they don't get paid!! Why do people look to Volunteers as if they are somehow less commited to what they do??? Geeez what's wrong were you turned down by one? OH and BTW they do have training. They risk their lives just like the paid Firefighters do. ONLY they do it for NOTHING! But, your probably one of those type people who has never in your life done anything for someone just because it was the right thing to do!!! Just one more thing... A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS OUT THERE!! We would be in sad shape without you!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 16, 2008 at 01:14 PM
I live in Cross Lanes and see the TMVFD in action several times per week. Thank you to our volunteers for their time and effort. In addition, Cross Lanes is an unincorporated area, and therefore cannot have a paid fire dept. Please check your facts prior to making such a statement.

Sorry, but the Jefferson VFD is nothing but a bunch of guys looking for a thrill. They would run sirens and lights to a 5 gallon trashcan fire in the middle of an asphalt parking lot. When they parade themselves on the middle of Rt. 60 at Kanawha Terrace with their boots out looking for money I step on the gas. I've had to deal with them before at an accident and have never seen such a bunch of inconsiderate people. They came up on the accident scene and instead of helping a paramedic get me out of my totaled vehicle (which they were closer too) they ran over and stood around the vehicle further away that the SCFD had already extracted a person from because it was closer to the news cameras. The guy who took the report was rude and impatient with the paramedics working on me even though I had a broken rib, fractured hand, and mild concussion. Thanks guys. We won't even go in the bill I received from them!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 16, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Concerned, obviously you're not concerned enough if you're not willing to go out of your way to join a VFD. These guys risk their lives for nothing more than the gratitude of the community. What have you done for your community?

Posted by: agitated on Apr 16, 2008 at 12:44 PM
I hate to see Smiley's go down like that but what I hate more is all the rude jerks who use the road I live on as their alternate route. You don't live up our street (Hampshire Drive)and should be more cautious when you decide to use our one lane road for your detour!! Be warned, I will not put my tires in the dirt just so you can get to work on time!!! Be prepared to get over cause I won't get over for you!!!

Isn't that what they have fire hydrants for Concerned?

Posted by: Local Vol. FF on Apr 16, 2008 at 11:43 AM
To concerned citizen. even if TMVFD doesn't run many call it is still goodto have them there. I bet if you lived in that area and there wasn't a Fire Dept. and your house caught on fire then you would complain about it taking a long time for them to get there. Why pay people money to run calls, when you are saying they don't do anything to begin with. WASTE OF MONEY. Volunteers have the same if not more training than paid.

the karaoke championship that was to be held thursday night will not be happening hate to see a well established place like this have such a tragedy.

Posted by: Resident of Jefferson on Apr 16, 2008 at 11:16 AM
This is why we need to have emergency routes out of the area. With Rt. 60 being closed this morning the area traffic was awful! Living in Jefferson there was only 1 sign saying Rt. 60 was closed and that was almost a mile before my house. And then traffic on the other side of the river was backed up for hours. The county needs to work on the emergency plans. I would hate to see what would happen if something would happen at one of the plants.

Wasn't this the motel that the owner stashed over $100,000.00 in the walls, so he wouldn't have to report it to the IRS? And wasn't this the motel where a murder occurred? And isn't this the place in the middle of what they call no mans land (strip joints, bars, gambling?) Just wondering.

Posted by: St Albans on Apr 16, 2008 at 09:01 AM
As usual you can't get out of St Albans unless you cross the bridge. Mayor Calloway needs to make the St Albans Nitro bridge his number one issue. Drop the historic downtown project and get us a two lane bridge. Being from St Albans all my life it is so sad to see a fire destroy Smiley's.

Wanted to send out a BIG JOB WELL DONE to TYLER MT VFD for showing up at the biggest fire they will ever see with TWO WHOLE GALLONS OF WATER way to go HEROS just another reason cross lanes should boot you out and get a PROFESSIONAL PAID FIRE DEPARTMENT to protect the citizens of our community.
