COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSAZ)--The Ohio State Marshal has ruled that a fire at a South Point motel last month is arson.

The fire at the Grandview Inn happened in the early morning hours of April 19.

The Fire Marshal says the ruling is based on evidence found at the scene and through witness interviews.

One person was treated for smoke inhalation as a result of the fire.

Investigators are asking for anyone with information about the fire to contact the Division of State Fire Marshal at 1-800-589-2728.

A Blue Ribbon Arson Reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for the identification of the person or persons responsible for the fire.

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Emergency crews are on the scene of a fire at the Grandview Inn Motel.

This is the complex on US 52 in South Point. Just before 5 a.m. the call came in that the motel was on fire.

Firefighters tell us there are no injuries being reported and the motel manager tells us people are being relocated to rooms that weren't damaged by the fire.

The fire has only affected one of the motel's buildings. This isn’t' the first fire at the Grandview. Back in 2005 a kitchen fire destroyed the restaurant and conference rooms.

There were no injures in that fire either.

Katie, I think that's why it was ruled arson. Someone wants to redo the hotel. You may or may not get your wish. Seems like everytime renovation is in order, the place burns.

Just now figuring that out (arson)? Duh!!

Posted by: Bev on May 7, 2008 at 06:06 PM
Isn't smoke inhalation considered an injury??

Posted by: Katie on May 7, 2008 at 05:52 PM
The fire dept did a great job responding. I hope they redo the motel, I would love to see it refaced for South Point. The bar in the motel is still running and doing very well. The hotel could be nice again.

I get so sick of people bashing volunteer firefighters on here. They are protecting you and your property for FREE! Give them the credit they are due. They work just as hard protecting us as the paid firemen do!

To Michelle & A.S.A.... You are both very obviously confused!! Being on the SPFD, and the second Truck in, CGFD and UTVFD were two of the final three Departments on this scene.. The Fire was (still burning in areas)but, it was well under control. There were a total of 7 County FD's on this scene working in unison the best we could to extinguish this Fire.. So please, give a little credit to those who made the initial attack on this Structure!! My hat is off to ALL of my LCVFD's Brothers and Sisters, Good Job to ALL of you!!!!

If you will notice the time that I posted, 5:54am they said that they didn't know if there were any injuries yet.I read it as it was happening not 8 hours later. Good job to the firefighters and WSAZ.com for timely reporting.

I was passing by when the first truck arrived at the inn and there was only one guy in the truck. Doesn't it take more than one person to even opperate the truck? He couldn't do it alone. I stayed to watch and when the other departments got there CG and Upper twp. got there they did a great job and I think if it wasn't for them the entire motel would have burnt to the ground. GREAT JOB UPPER AND C.G. Pat yourselves on the back...that is the 2nd time you've saved that motel from buring to the ground

I was on my way from work when the first fire truck arrived on scene and there was only one firefighter on it!! Doesn't it take more than 1 person to even run a fire truck. I stayed around and watched and when Cg and Upper twp. got there they were very professional and I believe they are the reason the entire building is standing.....GO UPPER AND COAL GROVE...GREAT JOB GUYS

To Jon....I live right next to the Grandview and they constantly have people statying there. I believe you have the Grandview confused with the Comfort Inn, they hardly ever have anyone there. From what I have heard they have a pretty good ideal who might have set this fire. The fire back in 2005 was due to electrical.

SOME BODY NOT DOING THERE JOB?

Posted by: lori on Apr 19, 2008 at 04:42 PM
i live just across the street from the motel. i was woken up by the sirens at about 4am. i thought they were aweful close because they kept blaring once they passed the house. then when i got up i seen it out the window. i went over there because some friends were there staying. it was crazy. there were all in all at abot 5:30 am about 8 frie trucks an ambulance, and tons of sheriffs, state boys and etc. i talked to one guy he said it started in room 202 and just started spreading. the fire in 2005 was bad i remember that too. i heard sirens and was leaving for work at about 6 that morning and flames were high in the air. i didn't see flames just tons of smoke.

To Bev on the very bottom:Actually Read it.It said exactly everyone is ok.

Posted by: michele on Apr 19, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Was this the hotel that had a fire a few years ago ?

Posted by: Jon on Apr 19, 2008 at 10:13 AM
I think that the fire marshall should start looking into whether the two fire were set or not. The place never has very many people staying there.

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 19, 2008 at 09:49 AM
Is it cursed, or did someone want to do some additional renovations? I'm glad no one was injured though.

Posted by: Bev on Apr 19, 2008 at 05:54 AM
Is this place cursed??? I hope everybody is ok.
