CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - It's primary day in West Virginia and things are off to a smooth start.

Deputy Secretary of State Sarah Bailey says all the polling places opened fine and there have been no reports of anything going wrong.

More than 71,000 West Virginians cast ballots for today's primary during the "no excuse" early voting period that ended Saturday.

Another 5,310 residents cast absentee ballots. Secretary of State Betty Ireland's office says the total number of early ballots -- 76,519 -- broke the record for a primary election.

The previous record for a primary election was 27,226 early ballots cast in 2004.

Much of the attention is on the presidential race, but the Democrats' primary ballot also features contested races for governor, state Supreme Court and secretary of state.

One Senate seat, the 2nd Congressional District and numerous legislative races are also on the ballot.

This is the first time the Democratic party has invited unaffiliated or nonpartisan voters into its primary.

Residents can vote Tuesday from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. when the polls close.

whiskey? haha! that's really weird, but funny. this will be my first presidential election because of my age, but i'm proud to vote and feel sorry for the ones who don't appreciate that right. we should value that privilege that others had to fight for!!! God bless America!

Nothing Wrong! Myself and another family member had to call the Secretary of States office just to get to vote. There is plenty wrong.

This is the first time I've had a chance to vote since I moved here. Is it normal to be offered free whisky to cast a vote for the candidate of their choosing? I'm not complaining, the whisky is good and all, but this didn't happen where I came from. I wonder who funds this venture?

This won't be posted until the polls are closed, but I wanted to let you know that some of us that support Hillary have been posting and e-mailing things about Obama being Muslim, not pledging the flag, hating whites, etc. You should now know none of this was true, it was just strategy. All's fair in politics. Hillary will win in WV and may still be able to pull out this thing. We need to put differences aside. Obama may be the VP candidate so we don't want any hard feelings. We definitely can't have the GOP back in office so vote democrat this fall.

There appeared to be a lot wrong with the ballots for the democratic WV primary. What idiot designed the ballots? The election will probably be contested because the ovals were hardly visible. God only knows how many people marked the wrong place. Just looking at the ballots was enough to make me ashamed to live here.

To Annoyned It proves that HRC is right about the people of WV and Ky since apparently no one in either state on her side anyway can do math. I mean the only thing easier would be 1 plus 1 = 2 but these folks would say 3, one for Bill, one for Hill and one for Chelsea. People weather your for or against her you need to learn to do the numbers. Don't take my word go do a search on delegate calculators and plug the numbers yourself. Give her all six remaining states by 55 to 45 and she will still lose. IT IS A FACT! Don't complain when you need the help of the Federal Gov. over the next four years or maybe eight and they turn the other way or just delay to get that help to you. PAYBACK as they say is a -itch.

No problems! This is the slowest election process I have ever seen. Filling in the dots takes three times as long. If you are not Democrat you have to ask for the Non-Partisan ballot for the School Board and Levy. Only one republican even noticed she only had one ballot and asked why.

Got up early this morning to cast my historical vote for OBAMA...I want to at least make sure I am counted in the 20 percent!

After having ourselves, Ky.&W.Va portrayed as poor, uneducated, disenchanted, country bumpkins made up entirely of white blue-collar workers and racists, how can anyone of us stoop to cast a vote for the woman who painted this embarrassing picture of us to the nation and to the world--Hillary Clinton!

I have never seen such a disorganized mess in all of my voting years. It took me over a hour and this was very early this morning. There weren't enough plastic secrecy covers. Sure is might count the vote on the spot, but the wait time will turn voters away today. Vera McCormick can't find her way out of a wet paper bag.

Don't vote for Margaret Workman. I was at the DMV a couple of years ago, and she came in to have her son take his license test. First, she walked right past the line of people waiting (including me) to the front of the line. Then when she didn't have the paperwork her son needed to take the test (I think the guy working told her a school enrollment form). Well, she threw the biggest fit I ever saw. She cussed the poor clerk up and down. She even pulled the old "do you know who I am?" line. Meanwhile, us "little people" that she cut in front of have to wait while she runs her mouth to the guy. She totally ignored me when I asked her to step to the back of the line and keep her language clean (my kids were there). Finally she bullied a supervisor enough to let him test (with no ID or paperwork). So... Is she THAT much better than us? When can a public official drop F-bombs in the DMV, cut to the front of the line, and get what they want, and we have to wait for them? That's BS to me
