HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The November ballot is set for the Cabell County Sheriff's race.

The two candidates are long on police know-how, short on beating around the bush, and they know each other well.

More than a quarter century of deputy experience, Tom McComas emerged victorious from a group of five democratic candidates.

“I've prepared for 20 years to run for sheriff,” McComas said.

Cabell's current Chief Deputy, Jim Scheidler ran unopposed on the republican side. The 33 year dept. veteran said his first priority is getting additional deputy manpower to fight drug crime.

“I just hired a deputy to work with ATF. You see the drug shootings we've had here in the city; two in the past month,” Scheidler said.

McComas wants local law enforcement depts. to partner with Marshall University and open a local crime lab.

“That is an extremely worthy, must effort,” McComas said.

As County Treasurer, Scheidler wants to expand the tax collection offices; McComas said deputies need wireless laptops in their cruisers for instant access to crime records.

The candidates are friends, and say from now until November, they will focus on the issues and not personalities.
