CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Senator Robert C. Byrd announced Monday he's endorsing Presidential Hopeful Barack Obama.
In a press release, Byrd states, "This democratic primary campaign has been tough and competitive. I had no intention of involving myself in the Democratic campaign for President in the midst of West Virginia's primary election. But the stakes this November could not be higher."
He also says, "after a great deal of thought, consideration and prayer over the situation in Iraq, I have decided that, as a superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention, I will cast my vote for Senator Barack Obama for President."
Byrd also points out both Senator Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton are "extraordinary individuals, whose integrity, honor, love for this country and strong belief in our Constitution I deeply respect."
Byrd's announcement comes nearly a week after West Virginia's Primary where Senator Clinton won the vote 2 to 1.
West Virginia has 10 superdelegates. With Byrd's decision, Obama now has three of them. Senator Jay Rockefeller and Congressman Nick Rahall are the two that announced earlier this year they were backing Obama. Three have already committed to Clinton. They are party leaders Pat Maroney, Marie Prezioso, and Belinda Biafore.
We spoke to Governor Joe Manchin Monday about the election. He says he wants to see how the last few primaries turn out before he decides who he'll endorse.
