CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A young mother from Cross Lanes faces charges in the death of her two year old son.
Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputies charged Elizabeth Thornton with child neglect resulting in death. Thornton is 21 years old.
Police say her 22-month-old son, Constantine Alexander Washburn, suffered brain trauma because Thornton failed to get him medical attention. Doctors say had Alex received immediate medical help, he may have been saved. Police say Alex wasn't taken to the hospital until three days after his injuries after a friend came over to the family's apartment in Cross Lanes and found Alex lying unresponsive on the floor. The toddler died in the hospital earlier this week.
Investigators say Alex had bruises under his neck and chin and hemmoraging of his brain. Police say that Elizabeth told them Alex fell and bumped his head on the coffee table, then hit his chin on the toilet later that night.
Alex's father, Christopher Washburn, lives with the family. Authorities say Mr. Washburn was aware of Alex's injuries, but has not been charged.
At the arraignment, Elizabeth said she had did not have any other children living with her anymore. WSAZ.com learned she has three other children that have been taken into child protective services.
Elizabeth Thornton's bond was set at $100,000.

Yes, this is a sad situation. Nobody other than the mom and dad have the answers to what really happened. Knowing the dad personally, I know in my heart that he would never do anything to harm his children. I cannot speak for her as I do not know her the way I do Chris. For those of you making comments about it, it is unfair to judge. Unless we were there to know exactly what happened, who are we to say anything!
one more time look at all these comments read threw them any one have any real answers? Have another autopsy done, go threw all doctors visits since birth and know what happened. There must have been something wrong with this child. Or perhaps I do agree with one comment here - he did still have soft spots. Alex didn't walk every well, just learnin ya know. His head was larger then his body. I personally know a child that had a larger head and balance is not good when the body is not developed yet. Please take this out of Kanawha County for the court hearing. They are loving parents. Anyone help them with new lawyer fees? Yes...they need new real lawyers. Not state appointed. Please help. For Alex , he loved his mom and dad.
comment on bobbi, how many times where cps called to your home, or how many times did you call cps on them......bobbi open your blind eyes, you know what was going on in the home and looked the other way as most did in the complex... look you up at the moose tells alot about you and you taking care of your children,, you left them with anyone that you could... Chris and Liz are both respondible for the death of Alex.. you need to take a hard look girl in the mirror...that little boy is gone.. he is dead, face the facts girl...... that little one will not grow up and be all that he could have been.. you send you kids to church,, lol and drink and party all the time.... partying cause the death of this little boy.. you think your tuff and ready to fight all the time.. then fight for the rights of that little boy.. fight the the little angel that is gone..you called cps on me and others in the complex, why not the one that hurt the kids huh, your busy partying also, looking the other way
