HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A Marshall football player is under arrest accused of underage drinking and lying to police.
Sophomore running back Kevin Grooms, 20, was arrested early Sunday morning.
Police say Grooms was stopped in the 1200 block of 4th Avenue and admitted he had been drinking.
Officers describe Grooms having a strong odor of alcohol on him and glassy, red, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.
Police say he lied about his name and called himself "Mike Jennings." He was later identified as Kevin Grooms, Jr. The sophomore does not turn the legal age of 21 until May 20th.
Grooms was charged with obstructing and underage consumption. Both of those charges are misdemeanors.
Marshall's athletic department released a statement following the incident: "We are aware of Kevin's situation and will handle it appropriately and internally."
Grooms was the leading rusher for the Thundering Herd as a redshirt freshman last season.
The Hollywood, Florida, native also won freshman of the year honors in Conference-USA. He scored a team leading eight rushing touchdowns.
Grooms is the second Marshall player arrested this April. Freshman wide receiver Angelo Jean-Louis was charged with fraudulent use of an access device.
