CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The mayor of West Virginia's largest city says he open to the idea of consolidating services with the state's largest county.
Charleston Mayor Danny Jones says the city and Kanawha County officials should consider a merger before the federal 2010 census to ensure federal funds based on population are not lost.
Several cities and counties have discussed merging operations as a way to combat dwindling populations and save costs, but none have taken the plunge.
The president of the Kanawha County Commission is a supporter of the concept and recently sponsored a trip to Louisville, Ky., so local officials can see how effective a consolidated government can operate.

What you people don't realize is that if a city goes underneath a certain level, many federal dollars are cut off. EVERY city in Kanawha County would benefit from this, and it's not to say that finding ways to make this work would be possible. I would like to see a merger of St. Albans, Nitro, South Charleston, and Dunbar to one government. The other move should be for Charleston to annex Cross Lanes. The next step THEN might be to join the two new "super"-cities together. People would be surprised how well this could work. Louisville is a FINE example!!
Oh I'm sure $2.00 Danny and his little puppets are all for it. Just thinking about all those extra working men/women that he could be taking money from must really be making his mouth water. People like him are are the cause of the end of this country. We are losing are rights and freedoms every day while people like Jones gets by with taking money from our pockets illegally.
People outside of Charleston will never go for a Charleston-based and Charleston-centered government. It would serve us better for St. Albans, Nitro, South Charleston, & Dunbar to combine in some manner. Either a full merger or just combining services (sanitation, police, fire, streets).
