KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Melissa Ruddle will be George Washington High School's new principal.

She's been at McKinley Middle School.

Ruddle is expected to get some help from former principal Larry Lohan.

The school board wants him to help with the discipline problems and modular schedule at the school.

In May, several senior pranks at the school got out of hand.

Board member Pete Thaw said it's unfair to put Mrs. Ruddle in the position without assistance because the job is quite large.

“We're going to get a hold of GW. It's not if, but when. Missy Ruddle is capable. Mr. Lohan will take care of other things we want cleared up, up there,” Thaw said.

Thaw said Lohan won't receive a principal's salary, but he says the pay will be well worth it.

The board plans to vote on Larry Lohan's position at its next meeting.

Ruddle replaces Nancy Alexander who stepped down last month.

What happened to Pete Corbett? He should be placed back into position as Vice Principal. Now that the people who forced him out are gone he should be put back in.

When I attended high school in the late 70's, there was no question who was in charge. A trip to the principals office didn't mean "time out" or a stearn talking to. There were no calls home to parents for a "crisis conference". At Huntington High School, John Allen ruled the hallways and he did it with a very large paddle. What is amazing to me today is how infrequently he had to use it. That intimidating power that he weilded was enough to keep students in line. Since corporal punishment has been abolished, education has steadily gone downhill. Maybe we should reconsider and give back a tool to the principal's that actually worked. R.I.P. "Big John Allen".
