CATTLETTSBURG, Ky. (AP) - Boyd County officials approved a settlement in a lawsuit against former County Clerk Doris Stephens Hollan.
The suit came after an audit of Hollan's office in Cattlettsburg showed she underpaid the county more than $60,000 in excess fees.
The settlement forgives the owed funds and specifies each party will pay its own legal expenses.
County Attorney Phillip Hedrick said Tuesday there was never suspicion that Hollan was involved in wrongdoing, but statute required the county to file suit to seek payment.
The agreement confirms the clerk didn't pay the county the disputed funds because office expenditures outpaced revenue. The funds were used to make required matching payments for employees' retirement and Social Security.
Hollan retired as clerk in 2006.
Her attorney, David Welch, said Hollan is pleased with the settlement.
