CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia's banking commissioner is leaving the post after seven years in office.

Larry Stark announced Tuesday that he plans to pursue a job in the private sector. His last day as banking commissioner will be Aug. 4.

Stark says during his tenure the assets held by state chartered banks increased from $7 billion to $18 billion. The growth was spurred by the conversions of banks from national charters to state charters.

Stark was appointed in 2001 by former Gov. Bob Wise. Gov. Joe Manchin has yet to name a successor.
