ATHENS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Where's Jack Hanna when you really need him?

Athens police officers could have used the Columbus Zoo animal guy at 4:30 this morning when the found a two foot long alligator in the middle of Mill Street.

Officers were able to capture the gator and transport it to police headquarters.

The alligator was turned over to Hocking College's Nature Center.

The center hopes to ship the gator to a center in Florida where it can be released back into the wild.

They shouldn't be allowed to sell these exotic pets in the pet stores. Someone out there decided they couldn't afford to feed the pet so they just let it loose. It probably won't survive in the swamp because it hasn't been trained in survival skills.

if this would have happened in wv they would have chained it up or killed it. not a lot of people here know how to take care of animals. its much easier for you to put a 6ft 3lb chain around an animals neck than to actually take care of it.
