Practice Makes Perfect Dialing
The state of West Virginia wants you to start practicing the state's new area code plan -- seven months away from the start of the new process. Reporter: The Associated PressEmail Address: news@wsaz.com |

BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia's second area code is seven
months away, but the state Public Service Commission wants people
to start practicing 10-digit dialing now.
The agency is asking West Virginians to begin using the 304 area
code for all calls, even local ones, beginning Saturday.
Spokeswoman Sarah Robertson says 10-digit dialing isn't mandatory,
but it is good preparation.
Local calls will require 10-digit dialing come Feb. 28. West
Virginia's second area code - 681 - will be assigned to numbers and
phone service that begin after March 28.
More information is available from the PSC at 1-800-344-5113.

Other states actually split the state. I lived in NC when they added new area codes, and what a concept! I knew if I was calling the next street or the next town, what area code I would be using! Yes, they went to 10 digit dialing, but you still knew which area code to dial. THIS is insane. I would rather change my area code.

I think its crazy to call the area code for my neighbor next door.

Ok here goes, I know the questions and complaints are coming. No, it's not long distance to call your neighbor. Anything that was long distnace will still be long distance. If you dial a number and it says please dial a "1" first, then it's long distance. If not, then it's local. NEW numbers will be getting a new area code, so you don't have to change anything. Everybodies number will be the same. It's not hard, and it's not complex. Just dial the three extra stupid numbers and live with it. And by the way, most every other state does it like this too. It's better than the whole top half of WV having to change phone numbers. I don't evern work for a phone company abd I know that.
