CLAY COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- From constant water leaks to millions of dollars in debt, anyone who lives in Clay County knows the troubles facing the water companies.
County commissioners want to consolidate all three water companies into one to fix those problems. Not everyone, however, is on board with those plans.
It boils down to perspective. The Clay County Public Service District just got out of the red. But the other water companies are struggling. The Clay Roane Public Service District is millions of dollars in debt, and it leaks 800,000 gallons a month. Meanwhile, the Queen Shoals Public Service District loses 400,000 gallons a month to leaks.
County commissioners said consolidation would improve water service by bringing all the public service districts under one roof. Some county officials and customers, however, said consolidation would raise their water rates, which they say are too expensive already.
Commissioners said the consolidation plan has not been approved yet. It could take more than a year to consolidate the three public service districts. Commissioners tried to consolidate the water companies in 2000, but the plan was dropped a year later.
