I read the article regarding the guy that broke down in the west end of Huntington and was robbed. First of all, Huntington is nothing but a drug haven. The poor guy did what he had to do. It is not worth being shot over twenty dollars and a shirt. The best thing that could happen to the city would be to condemn and tear down all of the crack houses and abandoned houses. If the owners do not fix the houses up seize the property. Most of Huntington looks like the hood. It is a shame that the Mayor and the city Council doesnt clean up the city. It is a disgrace. Ashland Ky has been cleaning up their city eleminating the abandoned houses. This makes for a better place to live. Back to the boy that was robbed. the best thing to do is never enter the city limits you'll be safer if you dont.

what will happen when a citizen kills a robber

Posted by: To Joe on Jul 29, 2008 at 12:05 PM
True Stender...The shootings haven't been is the south side, they have been in the east end.

Posted by: Jack on Jul 29, 2008 at 08:48 AM
If the Police Department would do something about all these crack houses here in the west end, then crime would go down. Everybody knows where they are, so why are the police shutting them down?

Its 40 cents to use one here in South Point

Posted by: Bev on Jul 28, 2008 at 09:40 AM
I'm just happy that you weren't another shooting victim. You did the right thing. Just ignore the idiots who have nothing better to do than get on here and bash people. They prolly don't even work for a living. God bless you.

Proves my point. Get rid of Huntington all together. Problem solved

Posted by: Joe on Jul 27, 2008 at 08:23 PM
i have lived in west end all my life and these people are saying that the west end is bad but u guys forget where all the shootings have been taking place im not saying the west end is perfect buy no means but its not as bad as the south side

Posted by: Lou on Jul 27, 2008 at 07:56 PM
Disagree about the west end of Huntington all you'd like but it's STILL a very dangerous area. The HPD and the FBI are very aware of the many drug dealers and crack houses in that area yet nothing ever gets done. If you live there and think it's safe...think again!! There are tons of robberies in that area that never get on the news too. Sure the rest of Huntington is bad, but the west end is worse and I will always avoid that area whenever possible.

well i guess you can't believe everything you read...i am the guy who was robbed. I wasn't using a payphone and thank you bev my truck was broke down. it was overheating and i borrowed a phone to call my g/f to pick me up. while i was waiting for her i was trying to see if there was a leak in my radiator. at that time a young guy around 20 came up to me and pulled a small pistol out and told me to give him all of my money. he walked to my truck and i opened the door he grabbed a blue striped american eagle dress shirt and $20 bucks. i walked to the front of the truck where he told me to and he walked behind me telling me not to turn around. my g/f arrived shortly after and with her cell phone i called the cops. now everyone can get on here and comment on how they would have done something different but its very easy to have time to think of something i could have done to prevent this or stop him. i could tell he was desperate and i didn't wanna get shot over $20 and a shirt.

Posted by: Bev on Jul 27, 2008 at 04:44 PM
Not everybody has a cell or even a house phone people. Maybe his car broke down or he was calling someone for a ride. Why do you have to see something that may not be there. I don't know why he was using a pay phone, but I do know it's a free country and anybody with 50 cents can use one.

I'm not sure which one is worse, Huntington or Charleston with crime! That's all you see on the news now, I'm staying out of Huntington!

Posted by: Kathy on Jul 27, 2008 at 09:49 AM
oh "GREAT", how in the world did we go from this guy @ at a payphone getting robbed to disrespecting our military people? Huh? No one is disrepecting THEM by any means believe me. BUT I have to agree with Mr Obvious, this IS a WAR right here in the streets of H'ton. WHY? Because it's not safe to even walk downtown or ANYWHERE near town these days at ANY time of day or night without some thug, druggie, vagrant threatening you or worse! There's murders, rapes, robberies, home invasions, drug deals everywhere you name it & it's HERE in OUR town so yes, it IS a war! The rest of us against these thugs (MOST of them from Detroit who brought drugs in here & set up shop(s) everywhere). Don't have enough police to get them all. Don't have adequate laws to KEEP them in jail. We HAVE to defend ourselves! I disagree with you on soc services too. Where are YOU living? In Bushs rosy world? There AREN'T jobs ANYWHERE. THOUSANDS are out of work, homes forclosed etc Not all bums

Posted by: isaac on Jul 27, 2008 at 08:37 AM
People this is stupid to talk about things you are ignorant to ! Just like the war over seas, you people don't know the true motives behind that war. So let's stop pretending that you do and focus on our neighborhoods! Drugs are a problem because people feel hopeless and getting high gets them away from the reality of todays life! As far as war goes we are probably loaning the goverment our sons and daughters so we can help a few key players in washington get rich by gaining control of the worlds oil supply. All some big wigs in washingtons doing basically is renting out our military for a few trillion dollars. So stay in the reality that Americans are comfortable in, which is going to work and paying taxes so the rich can get richer and maybe we who work for our money can retire with some foodstamps !!! ( maybe )

Posted by: Larry on Jul 27, 2008 at 08:25 AM
I have to disagree with the person who complained about the west end of Huntington. If you llok at the shootings and drug trafic it is not in the west end but the east end and south side. We do have out problems but please don't make us all out as a criminal area.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 27, 2008 at 01:23 AM
When I was living near the Foodland in Westmoreland I went for a early walk on Sunday morning down to Sacred Heart. That was my last time walking, even that early in the morning. I had some weirdo following me and making horrible remarks. I was terrified. Oh, by the way. I was 53 years old with no makeup, no tight clothes, nothing to attract undue attention, so don't try to blame it on that! The west end is gone that's why I left.

Posted by: great on Jul 26, 2008 at 11:13 PM
your term for "WAR" is more like a "siege". As i mentioned earlier there is only one way to stop the violence. By sending them to jail to only get out in 6 to 8 months is nothing. It gives them free meals. When they get out they have government money handed over like its candy on Halloween. As long as we keep giving them money they will keep buying drugs, which in turn will keep the drug dealers and violence in Huntington. It doesnt take a Brain Surgeon to figure this out. Also to say that i'm taking up for scum is almost as disgraceful as the $300 a week coming from my check to support them. I'm appalled by your accusations. We as citizens have many freedoms. One is freedom of speech. I respect this, but to give the money of workin people to slums, skanks is awful. everyone not in this situation will agree. conversation will end and action will be taken as of now.....

Posted by: Fran on Jul 26, 2008 at 10:59 PM
To Lou on July 25th. I have lived in the west end of Huntington for 25 years and am insulted that you "avoid" this section of town "whenever possible". Yes, there are drug dealers here, just like everywhere else in this city. Three years ago, drugs dealers set up shop in a house right across the street from my house. People in the neighborhood contacted the police and a huge drug bust occured in less than three weeks. No other dealers have moved in since. Neighbors need to keep an eye out for suspicious activity and get license plate numbers. This is a huge battle to fight, but if you will work together, you can make a difference.

Posted by: Stacy on Jul 26, 2008 at 10:56 PM
kyle has a point. no one uses payphones any more in fact sevreal compaines like AT&T and Verizon are cutting their pay phone services because the cost doesnt equal profit anymore now that anyone can have a cell and you people say they cant afford them. yeah right! go phones are uber cheap! so the fact he used a payphone is suspious. hopefully he will be busted for bring drugs into our communitys

Posted by: MrObvious on Jul 26, 2008 at 09:35 PM
great, I must disagree. I meant no disrespect for our men and women fighting overseas, the term war is quite appropriate for parts of Huntington where people cannot come out of their homes for fear of being attacked. They are so afraid of the rampant crime that they sit in their homes and do nothing about it. I'm saying, agreeing with Pablo, that it is time to stand up to the criminals, to fight back, to report them to the police, regardless of whether or not they are family. Yes, it is not a war like the one overseas, but it is very much a "war" to the people that are dealing with the criminals here. It is by no means disgraceful to our soldiers, for you to draw that conclusion is another tactic to shut up the ones among us that advocate resistance. I would go further and say that it is disgraceful to allow the criminals here to take away the freedoms that our soldiers overseas are fighting so gallantly for.

Posted by: Tim on Jul 26, 2008 at 09:07 PM
Kyle it was 1030 pm at night. Most drug dealers use disposable cell phones. People love to fill in the facts with fiction as it seems fit to make a story more interesting because their lives lack excitement.

Posted by: great on Jul 26, 2008 at 07:46 PM
This is not a WAR!!! Fighting Drug Dealers , Crackheads, and POS's thats disgraceful to the men and women actually fighting for freedom overseas. The solution is easy Quit giving the Government money.. This will take away everything no money for them to buy drugs so the dealers will leave. Welfare is something that should be taken away no matter the circumstances. People say its hard to get a job, and i see 12 year olds out everyday working. ONly Drugies need money handed to them so they can neglect their kids and spend it on satisfaction for themselves in getting high. Lets go back to the pre despression days and use a strong arm like Hoover. If charities want to support people them they can . Otherwise get over it

Posted by: Kyle on Jul 26, 2008 at 07:37 PM
Sorry if I made some upset with my comment. Let me try and clarify. It says late night call. Who makes a call late at night from a payphone? People know that doing that is not safe. I can only assume with the facts WSAZ released that it was as such, a drug deal gone bad. I had the same hutch with a shooting at a car wash in Flatwoods KY, awhile back. The shooting happened at 7am. I said, that must be over drugs. Three days later, they announced it was a drug deal gone bad. Give it time and the same with be said for this one, bank on it.

Posted by: MrObvious on Jul 26, 2008 at 05:44 PM
Leslie B, self-defense is not the same thing as vigilante justice. Vigilante justice in its true definition, is someone going out and hunting criminals and hurting/killing them without necessarily being harmed by them personally. Self-defense is when you are attacked and you defend yourself. One is illegal, the other is not.

Posted by: Anon on Jul 26, 2008 at 04:34 PM
You people are stupid he is not saying the deal was more than likey happening at the pay phone. Drug dealers are not going to stand there and wave the drugs around. It was a plan not to be noticed. The guy on the phone could have been pretending to make a call. Thats what he means by being suspious.

Posted by: MrObvious on Jul 26, 2008 at 02:10 PM
I'm not sure what Pablo said that so upset Gary, but I think some people do not want to hear anyone talk about resisting criminals and "going to war" against crime. I dunno, but perhaps Gary has a vested interest in keeping crime rates high. I'm not sure what Pablo's ego has to do with anything but while Pablo was attacking criminals, Gary was attacking him. People, we must all stick together to win this war. Everyone knows who the dirtbag criminals are in their family. Now is the time to report them every chance you get. If you don't, you are just as much a dirtbag as they are.

My Dear Gary, if you don't want to be taken as a clown then don't get on here and act like one. When you start out by bashing someone, how can you expect to be taken seriously? You sound very full of ANGER my friend. Pablo, like the rest of us is fed up with all the thieves, murderers, druggies. Everyone knows of someone personally who has already been a victim and the rest of us are just waiting to be. Our community has changed. It is in a sad shape. Our children are not safe anymore. It's people like you who release the THUGS back out onto the streets. You sound more like one of George Carlin's NIMBYS to be. (not in my back yard). In this case Gary, it is YOU who sounds like the idiot! As for Pablo, pay no mind to Gary. Keep your firearm loaded and ready. We do. If and when someone tries to break into MY home I will defend my family to the end. Back to Gary while your family is being robbed or raped you can call 911 and patiently wait while the crime continues. Go away Gary.

Posted by: To Ty & others against guns on Jul 26, 2008 at 12:33 PM
To Ty, yes you screaming liberals are all for getting rid of guns now aren't you? Well who's going to take them away from the BAD guys who are getting even bolder - not only robbing businesses & ones that are closed, but HOMES with people in them; robbing people at gun/knife point right on the streets in H'ton right in front of the freaking courthouse even! Who IS going to protect us if not ourselves? The cops can't. Too much crime, too little police officers to go around. Our "laws" aren't b/c they're on side of the criminals, so are our magistrates & judges for the most part. So who IS on our side and who WILL protect our lives, our families lives and our property if not ourselves? NO ONE. I say everyone has the right to carry a gun or own one because do you think the bad guys are going to give up THEIR guns? Ha! Dream on. You can keep guns responsibly in your home, locked up & away from kids. You CAN be trained to use one correctly!

Posted by: Gary on Jul 26, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Pablo! Seems you are an egotistical SOB! Who needs a lesson about "life" in general. The more you speak, the more you sound like an idiot!!! Just shut up!!!

Posted by: Ty on Jul 26, 2008 at 11:50 AM
Carry a gun Jeff? Look where carrying a gun gets you. Roger always carried a gun for protection. He ended up shooting someone and regreting it later.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 26, 2008 at 10:57 AM
So everyone that uses a pay phone is a drug dealer now lol..

Posted by: Fred on Jul 26, 2008 at 09:56 AM
And they say Huntington is safe? Yea right! I wouldn't be caught in Huntington without a weapon. Charleston is bad also. Ashland seems to mainly have theives that break into cars or try to rob liquor stores. Huntington, arm yourselves and fight back. It would be better than police.

Posted by: Joanne on Jul 26, 2008 at 08:46 AM
Hey Kyle, sometimes cell phones aren't working right because of battery probs or dropping it. Add to that a bad alternator and you have exactly what happened to my husband at that exact pay phone. Doesn't mean that it was a drug deal. Doesn't mean that it wasn't either. Just use a little common sense is all. Besides that, a lot of people struggle to make ends meet legitimately, without aid, and that means no extra money for things like cell phones. Obviously you have a phone so just be thankful that you do.

Posted by: Kathy on Jul 26, 2008 at 08:07 AM
I'm glad he wasn't hurt. We can't do anything anymore at anytime without being crime victims in Huntington or surrounding area! Kyle, the guy had a RIGHT to use a pay phone if he wanted. Doesn't mean he was dealing/buying drugs friend. Someone made remark on this bd about the guy who shot the guy breaking into his apt yesterday - made same inferrence you did - that since that guy had a gun in his home, THAT must have been over drugs! NOT these days! People are scared & sick to death of these home invasions, robberies, murders etc running rampmant in H'ton & even rural areas now. SO they're arming themselves to PROTECT themselves, their families & property THAT they're armed now doen't mean THEY are using/dealing drugs! They're trying to protect themselves & loved ones & property from the ones who ARE USING/SELLING drugs THOSE thugs are carrying guns & breaking into our homes now. Don't blame the victims. Blame the thugs who ARE using the drugs

Posted by: concerned on Jul 26, 2008 at 08:03 AM
I agree with Pablo 100%..And to Kyle, some people can't afford a cell phone.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 26, 2008 at 07:50 AM
YOU TALK ABOUT THE WHOLE AREA IS SO UNSAFE IN THE WEST END ITS A LITTLE BETTER HERE IN THE WEST END BUT IT REALLY BAD ON BOTH ENDS SO YOU BETTER JUST STAY ON THE INTERSTATE AND NOT EVEN DRIVE THRU HUNTINGTON CAUSE IT'S BAD EVERYWHERE NOT JUST IN THE WESTEND

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 26, 2008 at 07:42 AM
not being rude to anyone but i got to say i use a payphone here and there due not having a cell phone handy and i like it that. but look at the area it's going bad for sometime now so, let's not blame someone using a payphone for a drugdeal gone bad. b/c there's alot of people doing dishonest things these days for a easy way out. and forreal look at the area and the people in it.

Posted by: To kyle on Jul 26, 2008 at 07:34 AM
what kyle? no drug deals are done on CELL PHONES? wow, didn't KNOW that (sarcasm there dude)

Posted by: HIRE more COPS on Jul 26, 2008 at 07:27 AM
Well Kyle, not EVERYONE chooses or can even afford a cell phone so just b/c someone uses a pay phone doesn't mean he/she is selling/using drugs! That's a stupid comment! As for Huntington? If ANYONE has ANY doubts that crime here is TOTALLY out of control then you're BLIND, STUPID & living with rose colored glasses on! Wake up! Huntington's become nothing BUT a crime ridden town taken over by out-of-town thugs & drug pushers. We don't have enough police to fight all of it so THAT should be THE #1 priority of this mayor/council & citizens! IF they don't get the crime down SOON there won't be any reason for city "workers" NO business is going to stay here & NO ONE is going to let their kid come to MU! HIRE MORE POLICE - MAYOR/COUNCIL NO RAISES for the MAYOR/COUNCIL or anyone else - HIRE MORE COPS - get the crime down & the thugs/drugs outta here & THEN worry about the other stuff Crimes gotta go FIRST or everyones moving out anyway!

I know its just a matter of time before the crime that Huntington is having will be here in Mason County. The robbers, murderers, and rapists are nothing but terrorists and need to be treated as such. If found guilty in a court of law, they should be executed. How our justice system is working now is simply not working. The good citizens of our communities are either victims or future victims. Lets fight crime as a war. A war we must win.

  • Posted By: to Lady A:The "holiday" season also encompasses Hanukkah, a major holiday for those of us who follow the Jewish faith. We also give gifts and do "holiday" shopping this season; thankfully WSAZ is less ignorant than you are and recognizes that their viewership reflects more than one faith.
  • Posted By: to Lady AFYI, Hanukah is also coming up and we of the jewish faith also exchange gifts during this HOLIDAY season. I, for one, am thankful that WSAZ considers all of their viewers. Your comment was incredibly ignorant.
  • Posted By: What the heckI agree with Pat, I'm not liking the new page AT ALL.
  • Posted By: Christian not offendedOk there Lady A, just slow down a minute. Huntingtonian made a good point. Have you ever heard of Hanukah? Some people shop for Hanukah. Jesus was Jewish, so don't tell me that being a Jew is a sin, & Christmas is THE ONLY HOLIDAY this time of year. Yes, I too love to hear MERRY CHRISTMAS, but I refuse to become upset when someone says happy holidays. How do you know if when you say MERRY CHRISTMAS to someone, your not saying it to a Jewish person? Do you ever hear them make a big fat stink about it? NO!!!, you don't. So I think you should just be happy that God has given you another day on this Earth. So that you have the time to celebrate, with your family, whatever holiday you choose. I've decided to say HAPPY MERRY KWANZ~MA~KA that way I've covered them all.
  • Posted By: PatMuch like New Coke and the new Marco I think you've made a mistake with the new web pagedesign. I don't use Yahoo because the site is too cluttered and I feel the same about your new page. More is not necessarily better!
  • Posted By: AriIt is CHRISTMAS it is the time we celebrate Christ being born, not Kwanzza or Hanukah. Kwanzza is racist anyways it's a celebration of being black. I have no problem with people saying Happy whatever it is but I am NOT going to watch what i say and not say Marry Christmas becasue it might offend people
  • Posted By: LadyA`The question was, Did you do any Holiday shopping over the weekend? The shopping they were referring was Christmas shopping. What other holiday shopping would we be doing? Thanksgiving was over. It offended me like many others. It is the Christmas season and I want to see the word Christmas used, not holiday or xmas.
  • Posted By: HuntingtonianI agree with Anonymous!! It is the "holiday season" and by definition, it encompasses all of the holidays that are coming, not just Christmas. I also am a christian and see something inherintly wrong with pigeon holing this time of year to simply "Merry Christmas." What I find really offensive is those of you who believe that it is ok to say "Christmas" but would be outraged if "Happy Kwanza" or "Happy Hanukah" appeared anywhere. So, that being said: HAPPY HOLIDAYS and a JOYOUS NEW YEAR to all!!
  • Posted By: Holiday is in referance to ALL holidays this time of year. I have been saying Happy Holidays since I was a kid, growing up during the 80's. Christmas is not the only holiday this time of year. We did just celebrate Thanksgiving, remember. I am a Christian, that is not offended by the phrase HAPPY HOLIDAYS.
  • Posted By: annI agree with ladyA its CHRISTMAS
  • Posted By: LadyAWSAZ- Could you please change the word Holiday to Christmas on your question? The word Holiday offends me.
