Charleston, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A kitten now has a new home with a WSAZ staffer after being rescued from a storm drain.

On Thursday afternoon, Charleston police got a call that someone had dropped a bag full of kittens into a storm drain near Capitol Market. A WSAZ crew arrived on the scene to find a police officer and a helpful passerby making a "fishing net" for the kittens out of crime scene tape and a canvas bag.

It turned out to be just one kitten caught in the drain. After just a few tries -- the officer got the kitten to climb into the canvas bag and pulled her out of the storm drain.

WSAZ producer D'Arcy Robb was on the scene along with our photographer Adam Cunningham. D'Arcy fell in love with the kitten at first sight and after a quick call to her fiance, they decided to take the kitten home.

The kitten is doing well and the vet says she is healthy. D'Arcy and her fiance have named her Tiger Lily.

To Ashley on Jul 29 If you have ears and can listen and understand - the cop in Proctorville said "no resources" not "no funding." To all those who say the cop was upset or angry at the girl (who is actually an adult female menace in the community), I have never hear that they were angry at her, just concerned about her climbing into a storm sewer drain, in which they could not actually see a cat.

I agree 100% with the comments about the Proctorville PD! They are a joke! All I ever see them doing is pulling over out of state plates for doing 38mph in a 35mph zone... and chatting with those good ol' boys at the local Speedway or BP!

I LOVE stories like this. It lets me know there is still some good in the world. Maybe this police officer could call up the officer in Proctorville who couldn't help because of "no funding". Maybe this officer can show P-ville officer exactly how to stretch a budget in order to save a kitten!

To "if it needs a sibling": you heartless worthless fool.. if you must drop kittens anywhere it better be at the shelter.. not in a storm drain..or anywhere else they could be hurt..what kind of person are you really?.. i am sick of hearing negative things about animals on the news what are these people thinking? there is a no-kill shelter in barborsville and i would be glad to take any animals there opposed to people dropping them off.. THANK YOU to the officer that got the kittens out :) you are a hero! Also anyone else that rescues animals is a hero in my eyes.

I am a firm believer that a person who has no compassion or love for animals could not have any for a human. I say thumbs up to anyone who helps a animal. I can only hope I never see a person or persons do something like that. I am an animal lover and it would not be a pretty site.

Quit complaining - at least it's not a story about a robbery or murder. People who could just toss a living thing away like garbage are lower than scum. Karma will come for them!!

I have a liter I am getting ready to drop.

To Sue, who said this story should not have been a news story: what's up with your life? Get up at 4am and read the Wall Street Journal, spend the day hard-bellied wheeling and dealing, eat raw meat for dinner and tune into Sean Hannity? A kitten's life was saved. Praise the Lord! You should get out of the "professional" world of busyness and have compassion, even though it doesn't reap financial gains.

Wonderful story and love the ending! What a great thing to do! Good job Charleston PD! I know you get the run down at times, but this does help! It is so nice to hear something good instead of all news being bad! In this day, we need more nice stories!

God bless the officer, passerby, and the producer for taking a few moments out of your day to save the life of a small, simple, yet very important creature...the world needs more people like you!

Posted by: teemee on Jul 28, 2008 at 11:41 AM
the world is pathetic when people have to throw other people and animals away as if they are disposable. This story had a happy ending, there are millions that don't and that refers to every living thing. Survivor - people have a choice to do drugs and kill themselves - animals don't have that option. You sound like you still need help.

If Miley Cyrus falls into a storm drain, I hope its in Proctorville.

How addorable and you do fall in love when you see those cute little innocent faces. God put animals here for the humans to take care of and I hope he has a special punishment for the people with so much hatred to hurt an animal. How can you look at something so innocent and hurt them. I seen a moron on our hill killed a cat a kitten i picked it up and buried it behind the church. I love and take care of all the anmials GOD gives too me to take care of, and Making them happy, makes me happy. GOD BLESS those of you who care for animals and GOd will get the ones who hurt them....Trust me, he loves his animals too....

Posted by: confused on Jul 27, 2008 at 08:24 AM
bit confused was there one kitten or 5 the picture shows more than one so which one is Tiger Lily? I agree I think we need sweet little stories like thism sure does beat all the depressing stuff that has been happening!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 27, 2008 at 07:11 AM
I believe I would have named the cat stormy

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 27, 2008 at 02:12 AM
whats up with the proctorville stuff? Nice story. Nice cop.

Posted by: JK on Jul 26, 2008 at 11:58 PM
Thank God there are still people in this world that have hearts and are willing to help our precious animals. Let me catch somebody pulling a trick like that and Id stuff them down a sewer.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 26, 2008 at 11:22 PM
good as news. i love animals more than i love people.

Posted by: ky girs on Jul 26, 2008 at 05:29 PM
I just don't understand how anyone could be so cruel to just drop animals like that. There's always someone out there that would take an animal.

Posted by: cashmere on Jul 26, 2008 at 03:21 PM
It's a nice story no matter who adopted the kitten. Good news to read between shootings in Huntington. And Proctorville PD looks even worse now. Guess Charleston police don't mind taking off their sunglasses and getting out of the car.

Posted by: someonein pville on Jul 26, 2008 at 03:13 PM
thank god that kitten wasnt in proctorville!!! see how other normal cities do ? this really makes proctorville look bad!

Posted by: Kathy S on Jul 26, 2008 at 02:46 PM
KUDOS to D'Arcy! I'm glad Tiger Lily is now with a loving person who will take good care of her and love her! I for one am VERY glad you posted this story WSAZ. I agree. We can all use some GREAT and GOOD news! THANK YOU And thank you D'Arcy for being a loving person who adopted the fur baby I LOVE my cats & love anyone who shares my love for pets and animals so I'm very proud of D'arcy! Way to go!

Posted by: Sue on Jul 26, 2008 at 02:35 PM
This belongs in a blog. Not as headline news.

Posted by: ana on Jul 26, 2008 at 01:32 PM
Would it have been news if it had not been a WSAZ staffer who adopted the kitten with the same staffer writing the story? So when a WSAZ staffer does something nice it is now news. I think it is incredibly sweet but it doesn't pass as headline news. I am a cat lover and I am happy the kitten has a good home, but if you are going to report on this then you need to report whenever a kitten gets adopted. Anyway, I wish Tiger Lilly and his new humans the best.

Great Job it is about time we hear some good news. thanks

Posted by: Greg on Jul 26, 2008 at 12:13 PM
It's amazing that Proctorville police were angry with someone trying to save a kitten in a storm drain, yet Charleston was able to save a kitten. Proctorville = 600 people while Charleston = 50,000 people. There's more crime in Charleston, yet THEY were able to do something the ATV riding hicks in Proctorville REFUSED to do. It makes me wonder what else Proctorville refuses to do.

Slow news night?? I suppose the news you would like to read is about murders, robberies, drug arrests etc... Thanks WSAZ for giving us the light-hearted, happy ending kind of "news." I'm sure other readers are with me on this one.

Posted by: mj on Jul 26, 2008 at 10:39 AM
john doe you're an idiot! this is some good news for a change. and proctorville pd should feel like a bunch of simpletons. wow and your town is alot smaller than charleston too...go figure...and to the officer glad to see some people still have a heart, thanks for being one of the good guys.

I thinks it's wonderful. Thank God there are still some kind people out there.

Posted by: JL on Jul 26, 2008 at 07:51 AM
Sweet. better then reading about the shootings. I feel like I live in a war zone.

Posted by: Interesting on Jul 26, 2008 at 07:35 AM
It is interesting that the big city of Charleston was able to get a cop to help rescue the kitten, but Proctorville would not and even was upset at the girl who tried to help the kitten. Go figure!
