POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- One community plans to stop teen vandals from being out on the streets.

Point Pleasant City Council recently voted to enact a curfew banning anyone under 18 from being on the streets after 11 p.m. during the week and 12 a.m. on weekends.

Supporters of the curfew admit Point Pleasant's problems are more minor acts of vanalism, but with the increasing drug problems in the area, they say this is an attmept to be proactive in preventing major crimes.

Under the new curfew, police officers have the right to detain any teen who is in violation.

However, there are exceptions; teenagers are allowed to be out past the curfew if they are accompanied by their parents, are traveling to or from school, religious or recreational activities or are responding to an emergency.

The ordinance takes effect immediately.

My dad always said that nothing good happens after midnight and I agree. Kids need to be protected not only from harm but also themselves. Look at what happened at the school in Charleston this week by unsupervised kids. Yesterday when I opened up the store where I work I noticed that we had not gotten our papers, we called and were told that they were delivered. We watched our video and at 4:22 A.M. three teenagers(we know who they are) rolled up on skateboards and stole them. Childish prank, probably, but where were the parents? This isn't the only things that go on in my town. We need a curfew and we also need to hold parents accountable for their kids. I have 3 teenagers and I know where they are and who they are with. If parents would take responsability for their kids maybe we wouldn't have the need for such laws but with lack of parenting something has to be done.

Children DO NOT NEED TO BE ON THE STREETS AFTER 11 PM. IF THEY ARE THE PARENTS ARE LAZY PARENTS AND THEY TOO SHOULD BE CHARGED. CHILDREN SHOULD BE IN BED AT 11 SO THEY CAN BE WELL RESTED FOR SCHOOL. DAH......... AND YES, THE KIDS DO NEED SOMETHING TO DO BESIDES BE ON THE STREET....

Understood Pablo. I, too, and tired of being forced to endure alot of inconvenience due to the actions of others. In this situation, when it comes to children, they should have limited rights when it comes to certain situations. I believe that if they have a job, they should be able to be out late when needed. Or, really in any situations as long as there is a reason. But, other than that, there is no reason for them to feel they should have the same priveleges as 18 yr olds. Give them a curfew when under that age and you could also maybe curb some drinking and driving too. In this situation, I really don't care if my children have to stay in the house because Johnny boy was out getting into trouble. This law will just help enforce my rules for my children. And, maybe the kids will become more intimidated and too scared to sneak out of the house when the parents are asleep because there will always be "someone watching".

I agree with Bev!!!! What good is a curfew when the kids rebel and do what they want when we r not looking. No matter how STRICT u think u r kids (teens) will do exactly what they want when ur back is turned. Being strict just makes the situtation worse because strictmotherofthree u wont ALWAYS be able to keep ur kids under your "skirt". What about the communities getting TOGETHER and create rec centers or something for the kids to do instead of spending tax monies on new police cars for example. If we had the rec centers the police cars wouldnt have so many miles on them.

Sounds to me like they want the teens off the street so they can sell the drugs they take from this kids and sell the mto everyone else. The Point Pleasant cops are not the cleanest in the world, just like Mayberry with Otis running the town.

Posted by: Mike on Aug 19, 2008 at 01:45 PM
Wow have a curfew for teens thats fine but lets see how much crime goes on when the teens are at home instead of out late. I use to hang out for half the night I graduated and got a very good job never did get in trouble. If these teens actually had something to do at nights they wouldnt be into mischief, plus the cops in this town are so bored they have to break up these kids setting and talking, whoopie, what are they breaking the law no just another form of harassment by the good ole boys from the Point Pleasant police. The ignorant people running this town have nothing better to do then to harass these teens, I know when we used to do this we were harassed by the same cop all the time and were we doing anything illegal, no, just sitting but he didnt have nothing better to do. If they would stay out of Speedway harassing the Krispy Kremes maybe they could actaully do some real police work, yeah and Ive seen them run there lights just so they can get back to the station.

I agree, most minors don't need to be out that late to begin with. I guess I should have made that clear. I'm just tired of the majority of us, who abide by the laws, are always being "punished" by laws that are meant for those that cause problems. Look at gasoline. When I go fill up my truck or bike, I have to go in and give the clerk some money. How much? I don't know. With the cost of gasoline changing daily, its hard to tell how much. So anyway, I have to go in and usually wait in line to give the clerk money. Then I go back out to pump the gasoline and fill my tank. Then I need to go back in, and usually wait in line again for my change back. And why do I do this? Because some people pull away without paying. I'd like to see stiff fines and prison time for those type peoples but NO! I'm being punished by spending more time to fill up at the station because of drive-aways. This thing in Point Pleasant is the same thing. Go after the trouble makers and leave the rest alone.

This is too strictmotherofthree these days it doesn't matter how u raise ur kids they could be in church or a student's it is how the world is today so many drugs and kids getting into cars so i don't go along with what u say. So think about that one and i hope everyone else see's it my way. a

SONNY, THANK YOU FOR YOU COMMENT. WHEN I WAS A CHILD, I DID GET WORE OUT BY SHWICHES, BELTS AND PADDLES. MY PARENTS DID THIS TO HELP ME TO KNOW WHAT WAS RIGHT FROM WRONG. MY PARENTS NEVER PUNISHED ME IF I DIDNT DESERVE IT. I NEVER THOUGHT MY PARENTS EVER WAS SBUSING ME, THEY WERE CORRECTING ME. I'M AM OUTSTANDING MEMBER OF THE COMMUINITY, AND I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE FROM WHAT IS RIGHT AND WRONG. I THANK MY PARENTS EVERYDAY FOR THAT. TODAYS YOUTH HAS NO RESECT FOR NO ONE, NOT EVEN FOR THEMSELVES. WHEN THEY (LIBERIAL WOMEN) HAD TAKEN THE PUNISHMENT OUT OF THE SCHOOLS AND OUR OWN HOMES, HOW ARE THESE KIDS GOING TO LEARN FOR THEIR MISTAKES? SLAPING THEM ON THEIR WRIST IS NOT GOING TO CUT IT PEOPLE. I DONT BELIEVE IN CHILD ABUSE, I DO BELIEVE IN THAT WHEN A CHILD MISBEHAVES, THEY NEED TO BE CORRECTED.

First amendment? Seriously??? Explain how this violates the FIRST AMENDMENT!! Look it up before you spout off on something you obviously know nothing about.

Posted by: ann on Aug 19, 2008 at 08:19 AM
i agree with the curfew, i mean if you drive pass some of these complexes you will see kids out as late as 1 in the morning, see for yourself. this topic could go in all directions, for one the responsable parents really aren't aloud to punish their kids any more, if they try it gets the cps involved over probally nothing, more than likely the little brat got his/her fanny spanked and they went to the school and complained, i've seen it happen. Don't think for a minute that any of these public schools are on the parents side of things, all they want is your tax dollars. they send them home for anything now days instead of taking control.

Posted by: sonny on Aug 18, 2008 at 10:36 PM
Hey Blacksheep....I guess you are waiting for a bunch of liberal women to call you an abuser of children and a bad person. You won't get that from me. In your own crude way you are correct. Spare the rod and spoil the child. You must understand the womens lib movement is communism. Anyone thinks I'm wrong just look it up. The downfall of our countries #1 strength (the family unit) has been ripped from us. This was predicted years ago and is coming to pass. Most women are finished with guys like us, but my kids are in their nice snuggly beds now and I bet yours are too. Keep up the good work and happy early Fathers Day. You deserve it.

What if a teenager has a job? On weekends if they work 3rd shift or at a restaurant they are out way past 12am.

The curfew imposed by officials in Point Pleasant is an excellent ide that all communities should adopt.

11 PM ON WEEKDAYS AND 12 AM ON WEEKENDS??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! ITS GOING TOSTART GETTING DARK HERE SOON AND THAT MEANS, MORE DARK TIME FOR THE LITTLE MORONS TO DO WHAT EVER. I THINK THAT ITS A SHAME THAT A CITY HAS TO ENFORCE A LAW LIKE THIS. ALL THE PARENT HAS TO DO IS TAKE THIER MORON OUT BEHIND THE WOOD SHED....OH I FORGOT, THE STATE WONT ALLOW THAT. YOU'LL GO TO JAIL FOR TEACHING YOU KIDS RIGHT FROM WRONG. ME....WEAR OUT SOME LEATHER ON THEIR GOOD FOR NOTHING BEHINDS AND I'LL BET AFTER A COUPLE OF TIMES THEY'LL LEARN. MY DAD ALL WAYS TOLD ME THAT "WHEN A DOG JUMPS ON YOU WHIP IT, SOONER OR LATER IT WILL LEARN NOT TO JUMP ON YOU" THE SAME WITH THESE MORONS, "WHIP THEM ENOUGH" THEY'LL LEARN.....MAYBE

Posted by: JC on Aug 18, 2008 at 04:29 PM
It is a shame when a City has to make rules because parents won't. And Pablo, I am in complete shock that you support this idea since you are an advocate against drug dealing, murders, etc., in all your other blogs. What would kids be doing out on the streets at this time of night besides having sex, drinking, and doing drugs. It is really surprising that anyone would want to open up a door to a problem when it should be closed. Most parents aren't even out at that time of night because they are trying to be responsible parents - why allow your child the opportunity to get raped, killed, pregnant, or to do drugs when a parent shouldn't be? I say support the curfew, there would be less vandalism, less things being stolen, less trouble, and possibly less kids getting stoned or knocked up!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 18, 2008 at 03:58 PM
Huntington needs something like this. There are kids running the streets all night. About a year ago one young teen was attacked on our street and spent several days in the hospital. Good kids or not, no kids need to be out past midnight. And since some parents don't seem to care, we need laws that do.

Posted by: scott on Aug 18, 2008 at 02:59 PM
i hope it has a good affect on the town. but i have never seen a street punk go by any rules! they think rules are for everyone else! even the adults don't follow the traffic rules in point pleasant! I SEE ABOUT 10 PEOPLE A WEEK DRIVE THRU THE STOP SIGNS!

Posted by: really on Aug 18, 2008 at 01:54 PM
So what are they going to do? ID people for being outside? I know plenty of 20 year olds that look 16, I feel bad for them. When I was a teen I was always out until 11 for work, and then I'd sit with friends somewhere (on weekends and non school nights) we didn't get into trouble, just talked, but cops often would come "break us up," and there was no curfew in my town. Just bored cops. Plus, the teens causing trouble will break the rules anyway. Do you think they care? They'll just run and hide when they see flashing lights.

Posted by: strictmotherofthree on Aug 18, 2008 at 01:14 PM
i think the curfew is a good idea teens shouldn't be out wondering the streets late at night they should be doing more chores and keeping up there grades, i actually think that the 11pm and 12am curfews are to late they should be 10pm and 11pm at the very latest. If kids paid more attention to there school work and not their social life then there would be less drop outs and more kids growing up to be better responsible adults, I also think more parents should be stricter with there kids and not let them do whatever they want and push the parents around. Kids now a days have it way easier than when I did growing up I remember in grade school if we misbehaved we got the paddle. I think they should bring it back, I know just the thought of the paddle made me want to think twice about getting into trouble. But that had to be done away with and now look at what kids are doing. Start the kids off in the right path at a young age and they will be better teens and adults.

Posted by: c'mon on Aug 18, 2008 at 12:44 PM
Would those of you who are upset by this please read the rules....what teenager needs to be out on the street after 11 pm during the week. I would hope that the majority of them are asleep so they can get themselves to school in the morning. Sounds to me like the city know that parents are not enforcing curfews for their kids so somebody has to instill some type of rule.

Posted by: Steffan on Aug 18, 2008 at 11:33 AM
What this new law really accomplishes is to give the police a blanket excuse to pull everyone and anyone over to ascertain whether or not they are over 18 years old. I can hear the arguements in court now.

Posted by: Mason County on Aug 18, 2008 at 11:31 AM
The sad thing about this whole curfew thing and people griping about it is, that the ones that are complaining are the wonderful parents of the kids who have been getting into trouble because their wonderful parents don't care what they are doing as long as they don't have to deal with them. Besides working etc. why would you let your kids run the streets after 11 or 12 at night anyway??

Posted by: annon on Aug 18, 2008 at 11:10 AM
i am 40 years old and when i was younger when you heard the 9 o'clock fire whistle you new that you had to be in. That was the curfew then and no one complained about it. That is the way it was. I didnt live in the city either i was out in the county. We didnt have the crime that we do now and we still had a curfew for the teens. I think that even 11:00 is to late of a curfew for the teens during the week. Why arent parents keeping their children in off the streets so the police dont have to. Dont complain we could live in a country that doesnt have the freedom to do what we can. Just be thankful for your children and take care of them like a parent should.

Posted by: Debbie on Aug 18, 2008 at 10:48 AM
Kids in school do not need to be out past 11, however I know some of them work, it doesn't mention if work is an exception or not.

Posted by: Jim on Aug 18, 2008 at 10:20 AM
Huntington take notice....You should do the same thing here. It will not solve all problems but will solve many. If parents can't control their own children and make them responsible (which many can't) then its time to institute a curfew.

Can you say Welcome to another town that has trampeled on its teens because the Police Dept and Sheriffs Dept Cant do their Job.You Are in VIOLATION of the teens First Amendment Rights. If you want to do something do more road blocks/Dui Checks then you will get the thugs off the streets.Do You Think the Drug Sellers are in their teens Give Us a Break.WE DO NOT LIVE IN A COMMUNIST COUNTRY.WEST VIRGINIA IS NOT A POLICE STATE.but with the increasing drug problems in the area, they say this is an attmept to be proactive in preventing major crimes.SEND BARNEY AND GOOBER BACK TO SCHOOL IF THEY CANT DO THEIR JOBS.WELCOME TO MAYBERRY RFD.

Its a shame that the good teens are restricted of their night's activities on what a few do. I say when you find a teen (minor) who is causing problems, hold that teen's parents responsible. And I mean even if the teen's father lives in California. Parents are responsible for teaching their children how to act in society. For those parents that fail to do their parenting duties, fine and jail time. Then I bet you'll see a quick drop in teen crime when mom and dad are held accountable. Too many parents don't have any idea where their minor children are or for that fact, don't even care. Why do the good teens have to be restricted because of the trouble makers. Lets start getting to our problems and stop with the "Band Aids."

I don't see why this seems like such a big deal. Kids should not be out late after midnight anyways.

This is good! Kids do dont need to be out of the house after these times....

Posted by: sue on Aug 18, 2008 at 08:10 AM
i think that is a great idea. Teenagers should not be out that late any way. How can they be prepared for school the next day if they are out roaming the streets at midnight. They should be at home. These communitys have to set these curfews becasue most parents won't. Why would a parent want there son or daughter out that late even if they werent doing anything wrong there are others out there who are. A parent is there to protect there children not be their best friend and let them do what ever they want. I say more areas should have this curfew. It is not to punish the good it is to protect them and prevent them from getting in to trouble or in harms way. I am a mother of 3 boys under the age of 10 and they will not be allowed to run the streets when they are older.

Posted by: yours truely on Aug 18, 2008 at 06:21 AM
blah blah blah---whine whine whine---thats the way it goes with everything---everybody has to suffer from the act of a few ppl's wrong doings..always has been that way and always will be so get over it and move on with your lives and accept the hand you are dealt..."ya better be good or the mothman will get ya"!!!!!!

Posted by: from pt.pleasant on Aug 17, 2008 at 09:36 PM
that is a good ideal if the police sent EVERYONE home, not just a few. in this town it is WHO YOU KNOW. now go after the drug dealers and stop going after the users and acting like you are doing something.

Posted by: Mike on Aug 17, 2008 at 06:49 PM
Here we go again. The rights of the first amendment are being trampled by Point Pleasant WV. All teenagers must suffer for the acts of a few. This ordinance will be reversed by the courts when someone challeneges it. Which surely someone will. Take a look at Ramos v Town of Vernon Conn. Or City of Chicago v Morales. You cannot restrict teenagers movement solely on the fact that they are teenagers. When the first citation is written I will be there with the ACLU to challenge this ordinance. Just another small town trying to trample the rights of it's citizens under the guise of "keeping the community safe"

When I was a teenager growing up in Lawrence Co. Ky, a curfew was put into place for the very same reasons, and it was indeed effective. Our town seemed like a ghost town late at night, and a lot of folks were not happy especially those kids who did nothing more than just hang out, and they felt that they were paying the same price as the wrongdoers who prompted the curfew. It's a price that has to be paid I guess in order to help maintain a better community. Having said that though...there really isn't a good reason for the kids to be out at say 2am, and if they're roaming the streets at that hour then most of them are up to no good. Most break-ins and vandalism occur in the wee hours of the morning, and statistics say that most of these break-ins are commited by teenagers. Freedom does not come without sacrifice. Never has, never will.

Posted by: ME on Aug 17, 2008 at 05:26 PM
This curfew is all well and good but most of the time it is not the kids that are causing the trouble. This city needs to build somewhere that kids can hang out and have something to do. As it is right now there is nothing in this town for the kids to do but sit around in parking lots. We as citizens of Point pay into a recreation fund when we pay our water bill. Where does this money go. 1 or 2 small street partys a year (if that) I would like for the council to build a rec center or something where these kids can go and have something to do.

  • Posted By: to Lady AFYI, Hanukah is also coming up and we of the jewish faith also exchange gifts during this HOLIDAY season. I, for one, am thankful that WSAZ considers all of their viewers. Your comment was incredibly ignorant.
  • Posted By: What the heckI agree with Pat, I'm not liking the new page AT ALL.
  • Posted By: Christian not offendedOk there Lady A, just slow down a minute. Huntingtonian made a good point. Have you ever heard of Hanukah? Some people shop for Hanukah. Jesus was Jewish, so don't tell me that being a Jew is a sin, & Christmas is THE ONLY HOLIDAY this time of year. Yes, I too love to hear MERRY CHRISTMAS, but I refuse to become upset when someone says happy holidays. How do you know if when you say MERRY CHRISTMAS to someone, your not saying it to a Jewish person? Do you ever hear them make a big fat stink about it? NO!!!, you don't. So I think you should just be happy that God has given you another day on this Earth. So that you have the time to celebrate, with your family, whatever holiday you choose. I've decided to say HAPPY MERRY KWANZ~MA~KA that way I've covered them all.
  • Posted By: PatMuch like New Coke and the new Marco I think you've made a mistake with the new web pagedesign. I don't use Yahoo because the site is too cluttered and I feel the same about your new page. More is not necessarily better!
  • Posted By: AriIt is CHRISTMAS it is the time we celebrate Christ being born, not Kwanzza or Hanukah. Kwanzza is racist anyways it's a celebration of being black. I have no problem with people saying Happy whatever it is but I am NOT going to watch what i say and not say Marry Christmas becasue it might offend people
  • Posted By: LadyA`The question was, Did you do any Holiday shopping over the weekend? The shopping they were referring was Christmas shopping. What other holiday shopping would we be doing? Thanksgiving was over. It offended me like many others. It is the Christmas season and I want to see the word Christmas used, not holiday or xmas.
  • Posted By: HuntingtonianI agree with Anonymous!! It is the "holiday season" and by definition, it encompasses all of the holidays that are coming, not just Christmas. I also am a christian and see something inherintly wrong with pigeon holing this time of year to simply "Merry Christmas." What I find really offensive is those of you who believe that it is ok to say "Christmas" but would be outraged if "Happy Kwanza" or "Happy Hanukah" appeared anywhere. So, that being said: HAPPY HOLIDAYS and a JOYOUS NEW YEAR to all!!
  • Posted By: Holiday is in referance to ALL holidays this time of year. I have been saying Happy Holidays since I was a kid, growing up during the 80's. Christmas is not the only holiday this time of year. We did just celebrate Thanksgiving, remember. I am a Christian, that is not offended by the phrase HAPPY HOLIDAYS.
  • Posted By: annI agree with ladyA its CHRISTMAS
  • Posted By: LadyAWSAZ- Could you please change the word Holiday to Christmas on your question? The word Holiday offends me.
