PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - A bizarre hoax has fooled residents across West Virginia who thought they were helping raise money for cancer patients.
Churches, restaurants and businesses from Wheeling to Bluefield have been collecting plastic bottle caps, fueled by flyers that claim the caps can be redeemed for money to pay for cancer treatment.
The caps, though, are worthless. Even recycling centers are rejecting them.
Aleta Brace of Parkersburg collected more than 20,000 bottle caps before learning about the hoax. She's upset, but said the response shows how West Virginians are eager to help people suffering from cancer.
Amy Berner of the West Virginia chapter of the American Cancer Society says the group is trying to discover how the hoax started.

those of you collecting tabs from soda cans and bottle caps keep doing so. the Oakview Elementary School in New Jersey is collecting them fo help the Ronald McDonald house, they provide assistance to families in need of medical services. Also for every 1000 bottle caps they collect pays for 1 hour of kidney dialysis for a child. If you would like additional information, I will try to get you more.
This really stinks, I had found out about this "charity" and had been collecting bottle caps for several months out here. I even had members from other services pitch in, we've collected a substantial amount too. It's sad to know that this will not go toward helping anyone. If there are any other fundraising events going on I would like to know about them though.
i have collected them as i was told by a history teacher at my school about this as well did a few friends, we were never told any different. we changed are habits to drink10-15 sodas a day and between two of us we saved 189,045 in just a few months time period. we still have been told know different about the bottle caps.
