ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Charles Russell Elementary School in Ashland was on lockdown for about an hour Monday afternoon.

Two men got into an alteraction on school property around 3pm. Police say one of the men attacked the other one and when teachers forced him off of the school property, he ran away.

The school was on lockdown until the man was caught around 4pm.

"This just tells us that, especially, this is our fourth day of school, that everyone here knew what to do and carried out the plan to a t," Acting Superintendent Myra Robertson said.

The man is in custody and the person he is accused of attacking was sent to the hospital for unrelated injuries.

No children or faculty members were injured.

To the person who wrote "To The Woman Who Thinks She Knows Everything," I am not a women and I don't think I know everything, but I do know that the mother has ALWAYS been the one to pick up the children. Know one saw the knife, but that does not mean there was not one, the only thing that the witness could have seen was the victim asking someone to call 911, up until that point noone new anything was even wrong. And hopefully since Community Member thinks she knows so much and saw the WHOLE thing then maybe she can help the suspect get put away for his crime.

Posted by: Believer on Aug 21, 2008 at 11:33 PM
I'm sure that all of you who "supposedly witnessed" exactly what happened will be brought into court when this all comes to a head, and I really hope that you don't perjur yourselves. Everyone seems to be drawing their own conclusions of what happened, let the law handle this, you all are acting like judge, jury, and executioner. God is the only judge here and he knows what really happened and with him on the victims side, every thing will be fine for the victim, and the suspect will have to pay for the crime that he commited.

To the person who wrote to A Mama of CRE child, when all is said and done justice will be served and the man who ran from the school who did have the knife will be the one who we will all know is the reason that there are now to police officer gaurding the school. If the man that ran from the that had the knife did not do anything wrong, then WHY DID HE RUN? To me it is people like yourself that condone violence and stick up for the guilty party. And noone posted a comment saying they were going to shoot anyone, reread the comment. And it was not the victim who posted that, and I'm sure that the authorities already know who posted that comment, because anyone who posts anything on the internet whether the know it or not, their emails and identity can be found out by computer forensics. You can't post bad things like that on the internet without be caught.

some people know the whole story. and when the truth if known, the people on here who are putting things such as "there was no knife", and things such as "he WAS crying wolf" are going to be the correct people. And people like you are going to be proved wrong, and the wolf crying man will most likely be in jail because he was the one holding the kids in the building! And I'm sure we've all figured out by now that the reason there are now two police officers walking around is because of the man, or shall we say the one who was supposedly a "victim", got on here and posted a comment saying he was going to shoot the man who he was exchanging words with.

to PARENT of a student@ 11:30--if school lets out at 2:55, then why haven't you tried to find out about your kids by 3:55? do you not know where they are or care to check on your kids are after school?? this is an elementary school right? how old could your kids be? about 12 or 13 at the most? i would have been worried to death by about 20 or 30 min late. don't complain that the school didn't tell you till a hour later it was a lockdown! RESPONSIBLE parents would get off their butts to find out what was going on! by either going to the school or calling the cops etc.

Posted by: mama of a CRE child on Aug 20, 2008 at 11:54 PM
It is funny how all of you can post comments that you know nothing about. What if this had been one of your own children who had the same thing happen to them, and lets just say, that your child was approached by some one who had a knife, and they came running for help and asked some one to call 911, and the person with the knife ran away, and no one at all saw the knife, and therefore know one believed your child, and thought that they were just crying wolf. What if it had happened to you or someone you know. How would that make you feel. Unless you were there and know the hole truth you have no right judging the victim. The police are handling the situation, and the truth will be known. Then you all will feel real ignorant for what you are saying.

Posted by: a teacher on Aug 20, 2008 at 08:09 PM
I think I specifically said "with a specific reason", I at no time said that parents should not be in the building. I wished more parents would take more interest in what their child is doing.

Posted by: Lynn on Aug 20, 2008 at 04:50 PM
I have a child in the school. I am not concerned that the children have been damaged by this incident. Actually, my child feels safer knowing that the administrators did take all precautions to ensure that everyone came home in one piece. You can say what you want about over-reactions or stupid parents acting like playground bullies. But my child came home...she came home late..but she came home. Thank you Mr. Salyers!!! Remember, we live in a different world that we did before September 11, 2001. Don't bury your heads back in the sand!!!

Posted by: To A Teacher on Aug 20, 2008 at 11:26 AM
You sound like a really great educator "If you don't like it, go to a private school." I do not pay for a private school, but I do pay for my children to go to a public school. I agree that a parent needs a specific reason to be there, other than just wandering around, but a policy that bans parents from coming in the door (like Debbie posted) takes away alot of accountability of the school and it's staff. In today's times, I am not willing, nor should we as parents be asked to give up that accountability from the schools.

Posted by: crs parent on Aug 20, 2008 at 09:32 AM
all of this is just sooo silly!! some of you people are losing sight of the most important thing, and that is that our babies are ok! the police will take care of the rest, thank god for them and the staff!

Posted by: brandy on Aug 20, 2008 at 09:08 AM
Here you all are worried about these 2 grown men, fighting and carrying on ... There is a time and a place for this , not on school grounds. Just be thankful that none of the children were hurt.....

Posted by: to mr obvious on Aug 20, 2008 at 06:18 AM
you must be truly igonrant to even consider ANYONE even bringing a gun to school property, let alone shooting someone in a crowd of people!

Posted by: MrObvious on Aug 20, 2008 at 12:18 AM
Too bad the victim didn't shoot the guy when he pulled the knife. Then, the bad guy would not have had time and distance to get rid of the knife. Now, the victim is going to probably be in trouble because he didn't allow himself to be stabbed and therefore cannot prove that the other guy had a knife. Just look how many people on here are blaming the victim. They are either truly ignorant or just mad because they had to wait longer for their kids.

Posted by: To Tim on Aug 19, 2008 at 11:11 PM
Mr Salyers is barely past 41 himself! How could he have taught you in school?!

Posted by: Beth on Aug 19, 2008 at 11:08 PM
What does the rules of not letting parents in the school have to do with this? they were outside.

Posted by: crs parent/complete witness on Aug 19, 2008 at 10:53 PM
For all of the people who really want to know the facts. I was standing about 15 feet away when the driver of a truck said something to a man walking by. The man stopped and went back to the truck a few words were exchanged between the two, then the man in the truck jumped out and started running through the crowd screaming "someone call 911!" It was completely ridiculous to see a grown man who brought this on himself, to run crying wolf. I also totally disagree with the way the situation was handled because of someone crying wolf, while no violence at all occured. In my opinion the man who ran through the crowd is the person who needs evaluated and should be held responsible for the lock-down. The other man did not appear upset or angered, he looked at me,laughed and said "what in the world, is that man's problem?"

Posted by: response to the woman who thinks she knows everything. on Aug 19, 2008 at 10:24 PM
The mother has never picked the children up from school. she works until 6 pm. The dad has ALWAYS been the one picking up the children. There was NO knife, there were PLENTY of parent witnessess, and a few children witnesses who saw NO knife!!! And the "community member" knows the facts better then anyone on here! I happen to know that person, and she is a parent there, and she saw the WHOLE happening.

Posted by: Kathy on Aug 19, 2008 at 10:23 PM
To teacher: I think the operative words are "specific reason". The schools need to maintain an open door policy but this does not mean that I, as a parent, can just show up at the school and roam around. However, my child is ultimately my responsibility and my concern. For this reason, I want the ability to stop in at the school (going through the office first) whenever I feel there is a need for me to be there.

Posted by: anonymous on Aug 19, 2008 at 10:17 PM
Wow, I just can't seem to figure out why parents and students want to take supidity to school. I thought school was a place of learning. I guess people forget the long term affects of such actions on kids. Does anyone remember East Carter 1993. I do....I will never forget.

Posted by: gary on Aug 19, 2008 at 09:39 PM
what do you all want someone to do when there being attacked or about to be,,,,too just sit there and let them bash your head inn and beat on you ,,it might be too late for ya when the cops arrive,,,protect yourself no matter where your at,,just keep bystanders in mind not to hurt them

Posted by: a teacher on Aug 19, 2008 at 08:54 PM
Asking parents not to be in the school building during school hours, without a specific reason, protects not only the staff and faculty, but also the children. If you do not like the public schools because of this type of rule, go to a private school, where it is probably a whole lot worse.

Posted by: Beth on Aug 19, 2008 at 07:35 PM
I think charges should be brought uo on the man who confronted the other guy. The man who was sitting in his car minding his own business name should not be publised but the one who attacked should have his name and let everyone know what kind of guy he thinks he is.

what ever happend to grown up adults no wonder kids have no respect these days, when they see the adults acting like FOOLS!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 19, 2008 at 01:48 PM
These two men need to grow up and people need to get the facts straight! No one was attacked, no knife was involved. It was just two grown men having words and one panicked and ran through the crowd yelling help he's got a knife and trying to kill me. Due to this man crying wolf, he injured himself and mentally scarred a school full of children for life! The other man didn't even try to chase him or anything.

I want to thank the APD and the staff of CRE for a job well done. Our children were kept safe and it was done in an efficient and timely manner.

Posted by: To Debbie on Aug 19, 2008 at 09:24 AM
While I agree 100% that parents need to step up to the plate and start raising their children, I am 100% against parents being banned from the building. The fact that I have invested so much blood sweat and tears 'raising' my kids is why I will not turn them over to ANYONE in such a setting as you suggest. I realize that they are your students, but they are my children FIRST. A lock-down in instances where it provides for the safety of the children is understandable and acceptable, but a total 'lock-out' limits accountability of the school and degrades any relationship that the parent and the teacher should have. I already deal with some teachers using the present situation to indoctrinate my kids with their 'beliefs' and values which differ from the ones I am attempting to teach them. I will not turn them over to you 'lock, stock and barrel' to be held behind closed doors from 8:00 to 3:00 everyday, nor should I be expected to. It is, afterall, a public school, funded by the pubic

Posted by: anonymous on Aug 19, 2008 at 06:51 AM
The man that was attacked is an emotional wreck and overdramatic. I feel sorry for his children. It takes two to tango and school is not the place to do it.

Posted by: Annonymous on Aug 19, 2008 at 01:13 AM
I just wish, that the media would make sure that they have all of the correct information before they post information to the public. Now an innocent man is being ambushed by negative comments, and none of this was his fault. There were words said between these two men over 4 years ago, and neither man has spoken since then or even seen eachother unless it was in brief passing. The man that is the suspect, and that was suppossedly arrested has just held a grudge now for all this time, and now he finally found where he could reach the victim. It pretty sad that he had to pull this kind of a stunt at the same school where both of them have children, but some people just don't care. This man needs to be put in jail and evaluated mentally.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 19, 2008 at 01:04 AM
To Debbie, I agree the suspects name and photo should be posted, but the very unsuspecting victims name and picture should not. So do you think that every victims name and photo should be posted. What would you think if you were the one who almost was attacked, and you asked people to help by calling 911, do you think that they should post your name and photo also. You all need to get correct info befor just making the idiotic comments that you are posting. IT WAS NOT A FIGHT. ONE MAN TRIED TO ATTACK ANOTHER FOR NO REASON.

Posted by: CRS Parent on Aug 19, 2008 at 12:59 AM
To ANON: There was no altercation between two parents. The man who was the suspect has 1 small child at the school , and he is not even the one who partakes in picking up that child, the mother alone does. He should not have even been there. He snuck up the side of the hill where the victim parks on a daily basis, and has parked in the same place to pick up his children for over a year. So apparently he had been being watched by the suspect for sometime. the man that was hurt had absolutely no idea that he was going to be confronted or nearly attacked, and he injured himself try to escape being stabbed. The man did have a knife, although the knife was never found. But how many crimes in the world go unsolved without any one finding the weapon. You all need to layoff the victim, and start wondering if the suspect will be back to try it again. That is what scrares most of us the most.

Posted by: CRS Parent on Aug 19, 2008 at 12:50 AM
To Commmunity Member: You also need to get your facts straight before posting untrue comments. If the man waiting on his kids had not rushed to jump out of the the passenger side of his vehicle he very well may have been stabbed. The man who had the knife was stopped by police over off of Belmonte, the school is off of Blackburn, so the suspect had plenty of time to get rid of the knife. The man who went to the hospital was injured by trying to save himself from being stabbed, and never went running through the crowd saying a man was trying to murder him. He ran from his vehicle and asked people to call 911, and the suspect was asked by principle salyers as well as another gentlemen well affiliated with the school to leave the property.

Posted by: crs parent on Aug 19, 2008 at 12:39 AM
The media was completely wrong. The incident did not happen inside the school. It was outside, and to CRS Granpa, only one of the men was responsible for what happened. The other gentle man that was sent to the hospital is not a jerk, he was simply there to pick his children up from the school and had know idea that this crazy man was going to try to attack him. The man who tried to attack has a child who attends the school, but is not the one who even picks her up, her mother is, so he had no business even being there, except to try to inflict bodily harm upon an unsuspecting victim. The man who was supposedly arrested, approached the other man who was sitting in his vehicle waiting on his children, and the man walked up to his vehicle and pulled out a knife a told him he did not have to fight him, he was just going to cut his throat. The man in the vehicle was injured by trying to jump out the passenger side of his vehicle. The staff of CRS and police did a great job.

I would also like to know what the true story is. My phone rang at 3:55 telling me that the school was under a lockdown, school lets out at 2:55, although the school did a great job protecting the kids, I think the phone calls could have came a little bit sooner. By the time I got the phone call, the children was released 10 min. later.

No teachers or children were physically injured...but the emotional damage is done

Posted by: CRS Grandpa on Aug 18, 2008 at 10:22 PM
Several children had already been released for the day, (lower grades?) but apparently the majority were kept in lockdown. My daugheter in law had just picked up our second grade grandson, and when she drove around the front of the school she observed the police car with flashing lights and a school official quickly gathering in the patrol kids. Congratulations to Principal Steve Salyers and all the faculty and staff for performing admirably in the face of a confusing and potentially dangerous situation. These two jerks should be publicly identified, and punished to the full extent of the law. School violence of any type cannot be condoned or gone unpunished.

Posted by: community member on Aug 18, 2008 at 09:39 PM
It was not in the school building and the principal and staff was on the scene in a matter of minutes. Our children were safe and well taken care of. This is how false statements are made by the media. If you don't know the true story don't put it on the breaking news to scare the parents. The two men were in the back parking lot while parents were waiting on their children as they do daily. Just thank goodness we have well trained school personel to deal with this type of situation.

Posted by: charles russell parent on Aug 18, 2008 at 09:32 PM
The facts in this story are not correct, there was nothing inside the school and school officials did an amazing job getting the school locked down. The children at CRS were safe. No one is in custody and it appears things were not as bad as originally thought.

Posted by: Charles Russell parent on Aug 18, 2008 at 08:58 PM
Mr. Salyers and the staff at Charles Russell did an excellent job today. The teachers got everyone back inside the building and in classrooms safely, and kept anyone from getting hurt. I couldn't have asked for things to be handled any better than they were today. Thank you Mr. Salyers and all of the Charles Russell staff.

Posted by: commmunity member on Aug 18, 2008 at 08:42 PM
it wasn't inside the school, no man was attacked, nothing major happened, no one had any weapons, every one was fine, this is all a bunch of lies. it was two grown men who need to grow up, and it was just smart remarks made, and one man went running throught the crowd saying false things, about one man trying to murder him.

Posted by: Debbie on Aug 18, 2008 at 08:07 PM
WHY ISN'T THEIR NAMES BEING PUT ON THE NEWS? THEY NEED TO BE N THE NEWS AND THIR PICTURE ON THE FRON OF THE NEWSPAPER SO THAT EVEYONE CAN SEE HOW IGNORANT THEY ARE FOR GOING TO A SCHOOL AND FIGHTING AROUND KIDS. THEY NEED TO BE LOCKED UP. PUT THEIR NAMES AND PICTURES ON THE NEWS NOW.

Posted by: Debbie on Aug 18, 2008 at 08:02 PM
This is exactly why PARENTS DO NOT NEED TO BE IN THE SCHOOL BUILDINGS. I work at a school and it is getting worse every year with parents fighting over child custody and getting mad because they do not want to correct their children at home ans whends the school has to correct them, they get very mad. LET THE SCHOOLS TEACH YOUR CHILD AND YOU RAISE YOUR KIDS AT HOME.

Posted by: Jen on Aug 18, 2008 at 07:24 PM
The faculty, staff and police department handled the situation with great professionalism and calmness. Thank you for keeping our children safe. You are appreciated and we praise God for you!

Posted by: ANON on Aug 18, 2008 at 06:39 PM
It's not the school that is the problem, CRE is wonderful and they actually handled it very well along with the APD. The problem lies with in the 2 parents that had the altercation. It could have happened anywhere.

We also give gifts and do "holiday" shopping this season; thankfully WSAZ is less ignorant than you are and recognizes that their viewership reflects more than one faith.
  • Posted By: to Lady AFYI, Hanukah is also coming up and we of the jewish faith also exchange gifts during this HOLIDAY season. I, for one, am thankful that WSAZ considers all of their viewers. Your comment was incredibly ignorant.
  • Posted By: What the heckI agree with Pat, I'm not liking the new page AT ALL.
  • Posted By: Christian not offendedOk there Lady A, just slow down a minute. Huntingtonian made a good point. Have you ever heard of Hanukah? Some people shop for Hanukah. Jesus was Jewish, so don't tell me that being a Jew is a sin, & Christmas is THE ONLY HOLIDAY this time of year. Yes, I too love to hear MERRY CHRISTMAS, but I refuse to become upset when someone says happy holidays. How do you know if when you say MERRY CHRISTMAS to someone, your not saying it to a Jewish person? Do you ever hear them make a big fat stink about it? NO!!!, you don't. So I think you should just be happy that God has given you another day on this Earth. So that you have the time to celebrate, with your family, whatever holiday you choose. I've decided to say HAPPY MERRY KWANZ~MA~KA that way I've covered them all.
  • Posted By: PatMuch like New Coke and the new Marco I think you've made a mistake with the new web pagedesign. I don't use Yahoo because the site is too cluttered and I feel the same about your new page. More is not necessarily better!
  • Posted By: AriIt is CHRISTMAS it is the time we celebrate Christ being born, not Kwanzza or Hanukah. Kwanzza is racist anyways it's a celebration of being black. I have no problem with people saying Happy whatever it is but I am NOT going to watch what i say and not say Marry Christmas becasue it might offend people
  • Posted By: LadyA`The question was, Did you do any Holiday shopping over the weekend? The shopping they were referring was Christmas shopping. What other holiday shopping would we be doing? Thanksgiving was over. It offended me like many others. It is the Christmas season and I want to see the word Christmas used, not holiday or xmas.
  • Posted By: HuntingtonianI agree with Anonymous!! It is the "holiday season" and by definition, it encompasses all of the holidays that are coming, not just Christmas. I also am a christian and see something inherintly wrong with pigeon holing this time of year to simply "Merry Christmas." What I find really offensive is those of you who believe that it is ok to say "Christmas" but would be outraged if "Happy Kwanza" or "Happy Hanukah" appeared anywhere. So, that being said: HAPPY HOLIDAYS and a JOYOUS NEW YEAR to all!!
  • Posted By: Holiday is in referance to ALL holidays this time of year. I have been saying Happy Holidays since I was a kid, growing up during the 80's. Christmas is not the only holiday this time of year. We did just celebrate Thanksgiving, remember. I am a Christian, that is not offended by the phrase HAPPY HOLIDAYS.
  • Posted By: annI agree with ladyA its CHRISTMAS
  • Posted By: LadyAWSAZ- Could you please change the word Holiday to Christmas on your question? The word Holiday offends me.
