CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It was a special day for one couple in the Kanawha Valley.

Shannon Robinson married Myisha Murphy at the New Destiny Cathedral, and they both say it is truly destiny that brought them together.

They met when they were college students at West Virginia State University, where Robinson received the Mr. WVSU award in 2005, and Murphy won the Mrs. WVSU award in 2006.

"Both came to the university as college students. They met each other, and instantly fell in love with one another," wedding conductor and church bishop David Stockton said. "They've grown not only in academia, but they've grown spiritually."

"He's a handsome gentlemen,” friend of the couple Thomas Hill said of the groom, “although I think I'm better than him. He has a beautiful bride, and I know they'll make some beautiful kids together.”

"They're probably one of the most special couples that I've ever had the pleasure of putting together in marriage," Stockton said.

"She's beautiful, has long hair, and she can sing,” Robinson said of his new bride. “That's what attracted me to her, and the beauty on the inside of her."

"God makes everybody for somebody,” Hill said. “These two matched as soon as they met. It's a good pair."

Both the bride and groom have been featured in national magazines for their outstanding academic achievements.

They are now both members of the New Destiny Cathedral’s leadership, with Shannon working as the church's executive pastor and Myshia leading up the technology department.

This story sucks. This is not news. NO ONE CARES!!! And those that do care probably didnt need to see this story on the news because hey....they were probably there or got an announcement. I along with 95% of the viewers dont need to see this filler. There are other stories out there. How about the 15 yr old girl missing for a week in the Elkview area?

I think it's interesting that he was "Mr. WVSU" and she was "Mrs. WVSU". The title Mrs clearly implies that she was married when she met him. Sounds to me like maybe there is a story here...where's the first husband?

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 26, 2008 at 08:05 PM
My goodness people. YOu all gripe that the news is always bad and when someone tells a unique story, you bash it. I am glad to hear something positive for a change. The few things this story is missing that I hear in the news all the time is; 1. The husband didn't kill the wife; 2. The kids aren't dead; 3. the house wasn't set on fire; and, 4. No one got busted for drugs. Finally, news that HAD a happy ending that is seems no one in this region can accomplish. I think that is news.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 26, 2008 at 07:33 PM
Uhh, who cares?? It's great these people are getting married, but why is it news?

Posted by: laura on Aug 26, 2008 at 06:26 PM
danny, uhm It has nothing to do with race at all. The story is nice and all. Its just not newsworthy. I dosent matter if they are black, white or purple! Its not newsworthy! Ok so quit playing the race card!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 26, 2008 at 06:00 PM
awwwww!!! who cares? I just celebrated 20 years of marriage wheres my news story? Must have been a slow day in the news room.

Posted by: Vinnie on Aug 26, 2008 at 03:51 PM
Hey WSAZ, I have an idea for a good follow-up to this story: Star-Crossed Couple Makes Downpayment on Car.

GOD wants mariage to be private, not plastered across sinful television. SHAME ON YOU!

Posted by: Danny on Aug 26, 2008 at 01:44 PM
I bet you if they were white everyone would be congratulating them!!! And what's wrong with State? I graduated from their and I enjoyed it. Is it because some of you all didn't graduate high school? When is the racism going to stop? Obama is going to be our next and 1st Black President and us West Virginians just have to get over it! I'm proud of my race and theirs. Great Job guys.

Posted by: Congrats on Aug 26, 2008 at 12:33 PM
Everybody needs to get over themselves. I think that it is wonderful that they got marrired and it was put on the news. To Kenny: Your just an idiot to say that only 11 people go to state. I am happy for the couple and wish them all the luck in the world. To all the haters quit being jealous.

Posted by: big deal on Aug 26, 2008 at 11:38 AM
I feel that it was fate that brought my husband and I together. Why should we put a spotlight on this couple in particular? So they went to the same college and were Mr. and Mrs. WVSU!!! Plenty of people fall in love in college and get married. It's kind of normal!!! NO BIG DEAL here. Somebody either works for WSAZ or knows a friend of a friend, and this is why this ordinary story was covered.

Posted by: Rev"Que" on Aug 26, 2008 at 09:27 AM
I've never heard so many people in one state complain so much in my life. Now if it were you all on TV then no one would have anything to say. But because they're young, doing something with their lives, and African Americans people have a problem with it. Some people in WV just need to get a life. I read all these comments and only about three people had something nice to say. But it really don't matter because they made Top Story and not to mention in between you all watching the Olympics!!! Man I love those guys!!!

Posted by: Jeff on Aug 26, 2008 at 08:44 AM
Awwwww how sweet....God went out of his way to help these privileged folks find each other.....Yet God has done nothing to cure hunger, disease, genocide etc. But please let Ken and Barbie's biblical marriage wonderland overshadow reality...

Posted by: pastor dave on Aug 26, 2008 at 12:34 AM
Im so happy to see two young sucessful spiritual people that GOD has joined together to become one flesh. In my humble opinon we need to see more of this very thing instead of a negative view or asking why did this make news. We should thank them for sharing their wedding with us and maybe learn that this is how to start a good GOD fearing family. Im sure we could stand more of that

Posted by: Beth Ann on Aug 25, 2008 at 11:41 PM
Star Crossed also refers to destiny and the inevitability of the two characters' paths crossing each other. Best wishes to the bride and groom and I like reading something diifernt and good than something bad that happened.

Posted by: bubba on Aug 25, 2008 at 09:00 PM
Me and my old lady got married under the stars. It was romantic and we had plenty of beer. 20 years later she got real fat and I had to quit drinking beer because it almost made my kidneys shut down.

Posted by: Kenny on Aug 25, 2008 at 08:50 PM
Like some other words and phrases in the English language, "star-crossed" has more than one meaning. One of the meanings is "destined." And while I can see that the "news angle" is that they were Mr. and Ms. WVSU, I'm not sure it's that big of a deal, seeing as how there are only eleven people who go to that school in the first place. WSAZ, if you don't start improving the quality of your news programs, I am going to keep posting my dissatisfaction with your reports on your Webchannel, wsaz.com.

Posted by: Uhh on Aug 25, 2008 at 06:24 PM
If it were me, I would NOT be pleased at having my relationship described as "star-crossed." Maybe WSAZ should pick up a dictionary and check the definition? It's not a good thing...

Posted by: M on Aug 25, 2008 at 06:05 PM
Everyone, I'm thinking one of them must be related to someone at WSAZ, that's the only reason I can think of that this was deemed newsworthy, in someone's eyes!

Posted by: justme on Aug 25, 2008 at 05:42 PM
Hey my daughter is getting married next week.Would WSAZ come take all the pics? And put it on here,it would save me some money.Get real here!!!

Posted by: Kaitlyn on Aug 25, 2008 at 04:25 PM
Maybe they're star-crossed because in 2006 she was Mrs. WVSU, which would indicate that she was married in 2006. Maybe there's a story here after all.

Posted by: poor and desperate on Aug 25, 2008 at 04:17 PM
my daughter is getting next spring and we need to have her wedding announcement prepared. We're white, so is it still considered newsworthy. I mean no disrespect to the happy couple and I wish you both the very best. But I spent thousands of dollars on announcements when my oldest got married and the press did not show up.

Posted by: Maria on Aug 25, 2008 at 04:09 PM
The story did get my attention. I read it 3 times, but still can't figure out why it's news. Oh well. Best wishes to the happy couple.

Hey WSAZ my cat has been missing for two days why dont you all do a breaking story on it? Sounds like you all are hard up for news!

Posted by: amputee on Aug 25, 2008 at 03:48 PM
This is a story to talk about. In December i was physically asulted resulting in injuries in front of Wal-Mart at Nitro . The police didn't arrest the drunk because they weren't there to see it eventhough the entire incident was recored on store camera and an FBI agent was present during the attack, He said he couldn't interfere, eight months have passed and and calles to Nitro court system to bring justice to this matter has been pushed under the rug and forgotten about. So much for reporting about crimes against the handicap or public intoxicated agressors in public places. It's nice to hear of happy couples getting married , but check local courts systems for stories there might be a few civil rights vilotions that go unchecked that need someone to show an accountability that our rights are upheld. First place to check is Nitro Courts system.

Posted by: chris on Aug 25, 2008 at 03:43 PM
I dont believe WSAZ when they say there top story id based on computer count votes. Ive seen plenty of stories that have alot of comments on there on the bottom list. Point is how in the world is this top news? Give me a break!!

Posted by: Cassie on Aug 25, 2008 at 02:59 PM
Star crossed means "thwarted or opposed by the stars; ill-fated: star-crossed lovers." Not only does WSAZ have a bad headline, but a couple's marriage is hardly newsworthy. I'm suprised WSAZ didn't do one of their famous "embedded" journalist tricks or list this as "breaking news." Try covering real news and leave the fluff alone.

Posted by: M on Aug 25, 2008 at 02:11 PM
Don't get me wrong, I am very happy for them and wish them the best of luck. I just don't see what makes this news and why they are considered "Star-Crossed"? Anyone?

Posted by: another uhh... on Aug 25, 2008 at 01:54 PM
man, WSAZ must be really hard up for news. "Breaking news from outside the Clay Center, an ant has just been stepped on!"

Posted by: Natalie on Aug 25, 2008 at 01:53 PM
I just got married too. Will you put that on the news! I can't believe this is something that WSAZ would like people would want to hear about.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 25, 2008 at 12:04 PM
I have to agree people get married every day. There wasn't reporters at my wedding when I got married. All the murderers and rapists out there and you are reporting on marriages. How pathetic!

Posted by: Uh... on Aug 25, 2008 at 11:56 AM
"Star-crossed" might not be the appropriate term here - that phrase is used to describe relationships that are doomed from the start (like Romeo and Juliet).

Posted by: Ashley on Aug 25, 2008 at 10:55 AM
I'm very happy for the couple and wish them nothing but the best. Typically, I love hearing wonderful uplifting stories. However, I fail to see what makes this wedding and couple worthy of spotlight news. Aren't the compliments echoed by friends and family in the story TYPICAL of weddings? Ithink WSAZ was reaching by calling this a news story. Very much in love people get married everyday. News is when the couple celebrates their 50th wedding anniversary and still love each other.

Posted by: Joanne on Aug 25, 2008 at 10:38 AM
It might not be a huge news story, but it sure beats reading about all the negative things that people do to themselves and others. The fact that they worked very hard at there perspective career goals and won honors for it does make this a great role-model story for all, especially school-age children. I bet you are a bit of a pessimist if you really think about yourself for a moment. Your comments certainly support it. In truth, EVERYONE has a story to tell. Sometimes you need to listen in order to hear it though. Congratulations to the happy couple. You certainly seem to have started your lives together in the best of positions. That being together in love, education and spiritually. All happy things to you.

It is about time we here some good news such as this instead of the usual gloom and doom.

Posted by: a reader on Aug 25, 2008 at 08:42 AM
I don't get what the "story" is all about? Two people met. fell in love and got married, happens everyday, why is this story so different or did I miss part of it? I am happy the couple got married, but do not see a "special story" in it.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 25, 2008 at 08:37 AM
I enjoy hearing good news once in a while.

Posted by: Sheila on Aug 25, 2008 at 08:32 AM
I guess "Oh Please" and "Brian" would rather read about the latest drug overdose or murder than a feel good story about young love. I for one would like to thank WSAZ for reporting on the good news as well as the bad. May the Lord bless this couple with many years of happiness and love.

Posted by: wow on Aug 25, 2008 at 08:15 AM
Brian and "oh please" you people are ridiculous.. I mean seriously get off your sour patch and be happy. I wish the best for this couple. =)

Thanks for a positive uplifting story... We need that now adays....

Posted by: Happy moments .... on Aug 25, 2008 at 07:42 AM
How many times do we hear....all the news shows is bad stuff can we not see anything good. It's not that we have to show all weddings and births but it's the idea of saying "There is happiness to be found and enjoy it." If your an "Eeyor" type of personality that's fine but you don't have to push it on everyone else. Let's look at the bigger picture here. Thank you WSAZ for sharing some happy moments in our community.

This is news?!?!?

Posted by: anon on Aug 25, 2008 at 07:05 AM
Why is this a newsworthy story? I am confused as to why this received news coverage.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 25, 2008 at 04:21 AM
That is a nice story and pleasant to read. I wish this couple the best.

Posted by: Brian on Aug 25, 2008 at 02:55 AM
I have to agree with "Oh Please", remind me again how this is News. I have a co-worker that got married on 8-8-08 & nothing was mentioned about that. Hey, a few other co-workers are about to have babies (4 ladies all due within days of each other), will you come do a story about that?

Posted by: OhPlease on Aug 25, 2008 at 12:05 AM
THIS IS NEWS HOW. WSAZ IS GETTING WORSE AND WORSE ON STORIES. I'M SUPRISED THAT THIS WASNT BREAKING NEWS. I THINK ITS TIME FOR A NEW NEWS STATION.

I not an expert by any means, yet I find your site non-threating for someone like me. I check your site twice daily and though I usually do not like change, I like this one! I'm thankful for WSAZ's coverage of Southern Ohio. You treat Ohio with the same level of importance as West Virginia. Thanks for a job well done, with heart.

This is a FREE country, not a communist one. HAPPY >>>insert holiday here<<< There is that less offending to you?
  • Posted By: CathiThanks for the new website. I think it is truly great. Lots of information, great design. I get on this site many times each day and love the new look and info.
  • Posted By: drsenileIn the spirit of this joyous season, let us remember what it celebrates...the love and compassion for our fellow man. So, those of you who do NOT believe the way I do, get out of town! Sound like anyone you know? If you missed the sarcasm, may I suggest you also leave town.
  • Posted By: mooonieI like the new layout , it is easier to find what you're looking for . I can't understand what others are complaining about . Great job !!
  • Posted By: drsenileWell, I just attempted to submit a comment and it disappeared. And no, it wasn't my computer. My basic problem with this site...too much glitz, not enough substance; slow to load information; and, it appears none of the WSAZ staff ever read much of what's here and it might actually improve.
  • Posted By: drsenileIt is the season for honoring a man born 2000 years ago and to celebrate what he brought to all of us in the spirit of love and compassion for our fellow man. So, all of you who DO NOT BELIEVE as I do, get out of town! If you fall to see the sarcasm, by all means, find another planet.
  • Posted By: drsenileI realize I live in the ultra-exclusive suburb of Milton, but I am curious as to the reason gas prices (for one) are consistently higher than our less fortunate neighbors (like Huntington). As of tonight, there is still a 16 cents per gallon differential between Milton and Huntington (and we are NOT lower). I guess we are helping to pay for improvements to the mayors pet projects.
  • Posted By: PaulYour new web page is greate, Your local and national coverage is so much easier to surf. You will have critics out there, but any change that is new will not be accepted for a while, this is common for the region that we live in. Keep up the good work WSAZ. Please excuse some of my spelling)
  • Posted By: TaxpayerAt least one Senator has put a secret hold on the nomination of Neil Barofsky to be appointed Inspector General to oversee the $700 billion Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP). It is not clear why the lawmaker is holding up the nomination. Mr. Barofsky appears to be eminently qualified for the Inspector General position, and whether you support the bailout or not, all taxpayers have an interest in making sure every dime is spent appropriately and not subjected to waste, fraud or abuse. Please call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to connect with your Senator's office and find out whether they are responsible for holding up this nomination of the watchdog for the massive bailout package.

  • Posted By: L.A little feedback on the site redesign; I like the layout, but it's very crowded and cluttered. I browse the site frequently on my iPhone and I have great difficulty doing that with the new layout - I can't scroll using the touchscreen because all of the columns are crowded together and when I try to scroll I end up clicking on something.

  • Posted By: BobWSAZ, Why are you linking to WOWK headlines on your website? Even linking to the Daily Mail, Gazette, and H-D isn't smart - because in the online world, they're even more of a competitor to you.
  • Posted By: BobSomeone could be shopping for Hanukkah gifts. Read a book other than just the Bible.
  • Posted By: BibleThumpersIt's actually a pagan festival for the Winter Solstice. The Christians adopted it as Christ's birthday later on and even adopted many of the pagan items, such as putting up a tree and having a great feast.
  • Posted By: git is the stupidest thing I have ever heard, to be offended by the word "Holiday", this all comes from you bible thumpers that all want to tell other people how to think and what to say. You offend me! This is the Holidays! Even 50 years ago before all this ridiculous crap started, cards said Happy Holidays, because it covered Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's, it is the Holiday Season! So Season's Greetings and Happy Holidays Y'all!
  • Posted By: to Lady A:The "holiday" season also encompasses Hanukkah, a major holiday for those of us who follow the Jewish faith. We also give gifts and do "holiday" shopping this season; thankfully WSAZ is less ignorant than you are and recognizes that their viewership reflects more than one faith.
  • Posted By: to Lady AFYI, Hanukah is also coming up and we of the jewish faith also exchange gifts during this HOLIDAY season. I, for one, am thankful that WSAZ considers all of their viewers. Your comment was incredibly ignorant.
  • Posted By: What the heckI agree with Pat, I'm not liking the new page AT ALL.
  • Posted By: Christian not offendedOk there Lady A, just slow down a minute. Huntingtonian made a good point. Have you ever heard of Hanukah? Some people shop for Hanukah. Jesus was Jewish, so don't tell me that being a Jew is a sin, & Christmas is THE ONLY HOLIDAY this time of year. Yes, I too love to hear MERRY CHRISTMAS, but I refuse to become upset when someone says happy holidays. How do you know if when you say MERRY CHRISTMAS to someone, your not saying it to a Jewish person? Do you ever hear them make a big fat stink about it? NO!!!, you don't. So I think you should just be happy that God has given you another day on this Earth. So that you have the time to celebrate, with your family, whatever holiday you choose. I've decided to say HAPPY MERRY KWANZ~MA~KA that way I've covered them all.
  • Posted By: PatMuch like New Coke and the new Marco I think you've made a mistake with the new web pagedesign. I don't use Yahoo because the site is too cluttered and I feel the same about your new page. More is not necessarily better!
  • Posted By: AriIt is CHRISTMAS it is the time we celebrate Christ being born, not Kwanzza or Hanukah. Kwanzza is racist anyways it's a celebration of being black. I have no problem with people saying Happy whatever it is but I am NOT going to watch what i say and not say Marry Christmas becasue it might offend people
  • Posted By: LadyA`The question was, Did you do any Holiday shopping over the weekend? The shopping they were referring was Christmas shopping. What other holiday shopping would we be doing? Thanksgiving was over. It offended me like many others. It is the Christmas season and I want to see the word Christmas used, not holiday or xmas.
  • Posted By: HuntingtonianI agree with Anonymous!! It is the "holiday season" and by definition, it encompasses all of the holidays that are coming, not just Christmas. I also am a christian and see something inherintly wrong with pigeon holing this time of year to simply "Merry Christmas." What I find really offensive is those of you who believe that it is ok to say "Christmas" but would be outraged if "Happy Kwanza" or "Happy Hanukah" appeared anywhere. So, that being said: HAPPY HOLIDAYS and a JOYOUS NEW YEAR to all!!
  • Posted By: Holiday is in referance to ALL holidays this time of year. I have been saying Happy Holidays since I was a kid, growing up during the 80's. Christmas is not the only holiday this time of year. We did just celebrate Thanksgiving, remember. I am a Christian, that is not offended by the phrase HAPPY HOLIDAYS.
  • Posted By: annI agree with ladyA its CHRISTMAS
  • Posted By: LadyAWSAZ- Could you please change the word Holiday to Christmas on your question? The word Holiday offends me.
