HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Huntington Police have arrested and charged a man with the murder of a woman Monday night at her home at 530 Richmond Street in Huntington.

Police say the victim is 58-year-old Kathryn Smith.

Officers quickly arrested a man at a nearby convenience store. Police say 51-year-old Robert Frazier has been charged with Smith's death.

Police say both the victim and the suspect lived at the Richmond street address.

Police had received a tip earlier Monday evening about a domestic assault, which led to them finding Smith's body.

According to court records, a cooperating witness who was at the house at the time told police that the suspect and the victim were in a verbal argument when the suspect picked up a shotgun and fired one shot.

Frazier was arraigned in Cabell County Magistrate Court Tuesday morning. His next court appearance is September 5.

KATHY I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU. Know matter what people say. I know my heart. You knew that the only feelings I have for Rob is that he is my sons father. He has not been the best father but his son loves him no matter what. My son also loved Kathy very very much. She was always so good to him. He is so torn up about this whole situation. There is no explination to Robs actions. We will never know why, but we will always remember how much love Kathy had and shared with all. PLEASE WILL EVERYONE JUST REMEMBER THE GREAT TIMES WE ALL HAD WITH KATHY. AND JUST STOP WITH THE DRAMA. PLEASE...

I WAS GONNA LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE, BUT IM A LITTLE PO'D. WELL IM GONNA START OFF BY SAYING THAT IM NOT GOIN TO GO BY THE "SOMEONE WHO...." NAME, I WILL GIVE MY REAL NAME. IT IS APRIL, A FORMER EMPLOYEE OF MASTERCUTS. NOW TO ADDRESS THE COMMENTS PREVIOUSLY POSTED. TO THE PERSON WHO SAID "IF WE WERE HER GOOD FRIENDS, WE SHOULD'VE GOTTEN HER OUT OF THE MESS". I REALLY DONT THINK YOU KNOW HER, DO YOU. KATHY WAS A VERY HEAD STRONG PERSON. YOU DID NOT TELL KATHY WHAT TO DO! YOU CAN GIVE HER ADVICE, SUGGEST OPTIONS, BUT YOU NEVER TOLD HER TO DO SOMETHING. KATHY WORE HER HEART ON HER SLEEVE AND IF YOU HURT HER, WATCH OUT! THATS WHAT HER REAL FRIENDS KNOW. THAT'S WHY I MOVED FROM HUNTINGTON TO GET AWAY FROM THIS DRAMA, SO DEAR GOD, LET THE WOMAN BE AT PEACE, LORD KNOWS SHE'S HAD A LIFE OF HELL!! BUT SHE DID HAVE 2 SPECIAL MEN IN HER LIFE THAT LOVED HER DEARLY, HER EX BOYFRIEND AND HER EX HUSBAND. THAT WAS A FEW GOOD YEARS. TO KATHY-I LOVE YA AND MISS YA AND I KNOW I'LL SEE U AGAIN!! R.I.P

FIRST OFF, TO THE PEOPLE WHO SAY "POOR, PITYFUL ROB" HAVE NO CLUW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT! THIS GOES TO THE COMMENT MADE BY "SARAH". I HAD THE PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH KATHY FOR 17 YEARS AT MASTERCUTS. I -DID KNOW- THE WHOLE SITUATION AND ALL THE PEOPLE INVOLVED. WE ALL WERE FRIENDS. THE SO CALLED "SARAH" SAID ROB WAS THE VICTIM? GIMME A BREAK! UNLESS YOU WERE A FRIEND, YOU NEED NOT COMMENT! YOU JUST GO BY WHAT SOMEONE TELLS YOU AND DONT GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. LET ME GIVE YOU A LITTLE HISTORY ON "ROB" "THE VICTIM". HE IS A DEAD-BEAT DAD WHO HAS NEVER BEEN IN HIS SON'S LIFE AND HIS MOM, THATNK GOD FOR HER HARD WORK, HAS NEVER LET HIM DO WITHOUT. HE WENT WITHPUT PAYING CHILD SUPPORT AND I'VE SEEN SUSAN STRUGGLE TO TAKE CARE OF HIM WHILE THE "VICTIM" WAS IN JAIL. SOME DAD! KATHY WAS A VERY SWEET PERSON AND WOULD DO ANYTHING TO HELP SOMEONE OUT AND OPEN HER HOME TO ANYONE DOWN AND OUT. BUT OBVIOUSLY, THAT WAS HER DOWNFALL. TO THESE PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY KNOW, THEY HAVE NO IDEA!

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and close friends of kathy, she was a wonderful caring person who will be missed dearly.I had the chance of knowing Kathy when i was younger and she was always very good to my family,we lost touch after awhile but she will always be in my heart.May she rest in peace. We love you and will miss you very much.

I knew Kathy for sevral years. She was such a nice person. Never heard her say anything bad about anyone. Even when times were hard for her. She still held her head up high. I don't understand how anyone could say anything bad about Kathy. She may have not always made the best choices, but they were her choices and she never hurt anyone with them. I will always think of Kathy when I go past Master Cuts and she's not at her station, and have a tear in my eye. If you didn't know Kathy you missed out. Very loving person, she will be missed. To her family I know this will not comfort you right now. But just know she was loved my many. And will be missed a great deal.

This absolutely breaks my heart. This was my cousin and I will miss her forever. We spent many summers together growing up. I loved her so and hope justice is served. I am truly sorry for my family and wished I was there to avoid this whole tragedy. I was schocked to have my cousin call me and tell me this. So, so sad.

i didnt know this obviously wonderful lady. but many of you did. and loved her very much. it is a shame her life was cut short by the hand of someone she loved. my thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this most difficult time. i hope this man pays for what he has done. my prayers are also with this mans son whom loved her as well.may GOD bless you all...

Someone, i tried to get them to report it to the police, i told them if they let him by with it he would do it again, and u see what has happened! I did, i tried over and over, Kathy treated me as if i were her son she never had and she was like the "super-cool" mother i never had. my heart is so broken. i hope rob rots in hell for all of eternity!!!

Herald dispatch....... You make me sick. How could you do that? You know what I am talking about. Her uncle my dear friend, will be waking up soon reading that. If I knew the paper was going to be on his porch, I would drive from Wayne Co. to Huntington to remove it, but that is not going to stop him from buying one. I think you, the Herald Dispatch is going to take a bunch of heat from this one. I would have left this comment on your crappy page, but I did not want to support you. My paper as of now is cancelled, along with some other people in the community, and you better not EVER call me, wanting my bussiness back!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have honey-bunny, she loved u Terry, she's goin to be living with me now along with Saba, the ferocious ONE pitbull MM spoke of. If u know so much you'd know what a pitt bull looks like and know she is not one. How was it u knew all of these goin-ons MM?

JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS....HPD did a fantastic job on this based on the information they had been givin. Hats off to Skip and what seemed to be half the police department. They were there with me every step of the way with no fear. Those of u that want to say anything different and the others that have been stealing things from her yard and out of her house, we know who u are and if everything isnt returned no questions asked, U WILL BE PROSECUTED. And to the one who was bad mouthing her and saying so many mean things about her while standing on her porch today, u know who are, i dont think i've ever known such a two faced backstabbing b****, i'd rather not even see u at the funeral pretending to be something to everyone that u are not. Terry, Kathy loved u and missed u very much, she talked of u quite often, she had one wish for us but i think it maybe too late for that, u know who ur in love with and so did she. I hope to see everyone at the vidual tomorrow night at 9. thanks everyone!

EVERYONE IS CLAIMING TO BE SO SUPRISED HE HAD ALREADY SHOT ONE OF HIS ROOMMATES AT THIS PAST THANKSGIVING. SO FOR EVERYONE CLAIMING TO BE SUCH GOOD FRIENDS WITH KATHY. WHY DIDN'T ANYONE HELP HER THEN.I BEGGED HER TO NOT LET THAT MAN COME BACK TO HER HOME.THAT IS WHEN I NEVER WENT BACK.SORRY TO HER FAMILY KATHY WAS ONE OF THE BEST PEOPLE THAT I KNEW IN HUNT.TO ANY WOMEN WHO READS THIS IF UR MAN HITS U ONCE THIS COULD HAPPEN TO U. PLEASE LET THIS BE A EYE OPENER FOR U DON'T LET WHAT HAPPEN TO KATHY HAPPEN TO U....TO ROBS SON I AM SO SORRY U HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS NOONE SHOULD HAVE TO.. PLEASE NEVER TURN OUT LIKE YOUR FATHER....

My heart goes out to Kathy's family, I hadn't gotten the chance to meet her, but I had always heard nice things about her. As for HPD.......let's not go there. I know people that are still waiting to make a police report for a hit and run that happened over 2 weeks ago. My prayers are with Kathy's family. No one knew that things were that bad. I don't care how mad you can be at someone, killing them isn't the answer. Walk away, cool off, come back and talk, or get the hell away from each other.

This is crazy. Yes Robert was crazy and yes Kathy loved him. He was always a very hateful mean person. I,as well as many of you, wish Kathy would have made him leave, but we sometimes get stuck in situations that we feel helpless. As for you MM you seem to know alot about Rob! What were you a client of his????? Please dont forget Rob has a son who reads this stuff and his son loved Kathy as a second mother and I as a sister. She did love life and her Dogs were her childern. Kathy never hurt anyone and always took in any stray she could...including Rob.

This city has went to hell in a hand basket, why are the police setting up speed traps instead of solving murders?

Posted by: Angela on Aug 26, 2008 at 09:03 PM
Kathy was a wonderful person, as many others know. She had a hard life, and many ppl used her and took her for granted. She always invited us over for dinner . She was a great cook, and worked hard for everything she had. She never had children but , she was a huge animal lover, and she always said her pets were like her kids. She always remembered my children's birthdays, and hugged them everytime she saw them. I worked with her at Mastercuts for 7 years, and she was a great friend to me. I was in the hospital once, and she came in crying , telling me how she hoped I got better and she loved me. She is and will always be greatly missed!

Henry {Kathy's uncle}, I love you and Francis. I can remember her {Kathy} being my mall buddy for 15 years. She was so funny. I remember her telling me a story about her being young and breaking down and you had to pick her up, I laughed so hard, and that is what I always thought about when I thought of Kathy. If you need anything get my number from Dennis. I will come and sit with you guys I do not care. Next time I see you guys you have one big bear hug coming. I will surprise you, it is always you guys hugging me... maybe I will kiss you both too. I love you guys. Ann Arthur

I feel sorry for this lady seems like she was liked or loved by many people but if she was abused by this man why did she not leave or report him to the police ? So many people seem to have known this but not person could talk some sense into her, there is also several comments about him being a drug dealer but nobody turned him in why? You can't blame HPD for everything that goes wrong in Huntington they can't see into the future to stop crime it's just there job to clean up everyones mess. If you wan't something done about crime stand up for yourselves and your community turn these people in.

Domestic dispute? Give me a break. Robert Frazier is a low life drug dealer who on a daily basis sold drugs out of Kathy Smith's house for over the past year. Why do you think they had two pit bulls and a video surveillance camera on their front porch?

I worked with Kathy at MasterCuts and she was a great person. She loved to laugh and have a good time. Robert on the other hand was a NUT. I know him when he was married to his first wife. She got smart years ago go and got away from him. To look at his PIC shows what a life time of drugs will do to you. He is crazy,I just wished Kathy would have listen to everybody and left him. I'm so sorry that this happened to her,she will be very missed.

I understand that guyandotte may need more police presence, what I don't understand is how that presence would have prevented this. This probably didn't start last night, so no one knew anything was going on. People need to help people, the police are just instruments to do that with.

domestic assault happens all over the world but guyndott is a very bad place and the police will not do any thing untill someone is dead and women get beat by the one person they love how many other women have to get there eyes beat in or even killed before someone does something about this why would the law allowe a women beater back on the streets i dont undertand this

My heart goes out to the Family, Community and Law Enforcement Officials in Huntington.....I was going to move there about a year ago, but in light of all of this crime over the last couple years Thank God i opted to move to the country.....That town seems to be as bad as some of the bigger cities in the Country...........

I was reading in the lastest issue of Police Chief magazine that since 9/11 (in which less than 3,000 were killed in the terroris attacks) that 99,000 Americans have been murdered. What this boils down to is we are many, many, many times more likely to be murdered by robbery, rape, etc. than we are by terrorists. So, like I've said in so many of my previous posts, we need to treat all murderers like terrorists. This man, if found guilty, needs executed. Not 20 years from now, but within 6 months. But we all know that the trial won't take place for at least 1 1/2 years to 2 years from now. Lawyers are a big problem. They want hearings, meetings, evalations of criminals because that means a lawyer has to be present and that lawyer will be paid. But justice suffers in this as the criminal is years away from being punished for his/her crime. Then its usually just a slap on the wrist. So, we'll just sit back and wait to read about who is murdered next. Justice in America benefits scum.

put a speedway or jolly pirate in guyandotte and the cops would patrol more often

Posted by: Not shocked either on Aug 26, 2008 at 03:43 AM
Agree with Anon that another murder here doesn't surprise me. Instead of being shocking anymore, it's sadly the norm for Huntington these days. I hope they solve it soon too and arrest the person who did it, but also agree that the track record of our so-called detectives is not very stellar to say the least. My heart and prayers go out to the lady and her family/friends. So sad that our community and City has come to this. The whole country and world's gone crazy it seems.

Posted by: farfy on Aug 26, 2008 at 02:34 AM
Could anyone tell us what the lady's name was? I have a friend living on that street.I'm not sureif this is my friends address. So if you know her name,Please tel us her first name anyways? Please!! & If you do tell the neighbors what you have heard & what time.Thats very inportant.Lets come together & help the law & get their man or woman. Thank you!

Posted by: Heather on Aug 26, 2008 at 12:54 AM
I'm really surprised it took wsaz to post this up, but I knew it was a matter of time. I agree Jennifer.. I live in Guyandotte and it is bad. I personally don't live on a bad street because it's mostly family and other families living on the same street, but some areas are HORRIBLE and cops NEVER come.. sometimes it takes a day.. so I'm surprised they even showed up. This woman had actually been dead for quite some time and the last name of the man is Frazier (as I was told). I also heard that it was difficult for the police to get into the house because there was a pit bull involved (but the truth to that one is not known.) Horrible.. absolutely horrible.. I think the cops actually got something else going on in guyandotte too.. saw an undercover and cop on Buffington and another at a house farther towards the floodwall, heading towards rt. 2.

I browse the site frequently on my iPhone and I have great difficulty doing that with the new layout - I can't scroll using the touchscreen because all of the columns are crowded together and when I try to scroll I end up clicking on something.
  • Posted By: I DO NOT LIKE THE NEW PAGE. THE OLD PAGE WAS SO MUCH BETTER!!!
  • Posted By: MelindaTHE ONLY THING THAT NEEDS FIXED ON YOUR NEW WEB SITE IS THE VIEWING OF THE VIDEOS LIKE YOU HAVE GOING ON AROUND THE WORLD I HAVE A POP UP BLOCKER THAT WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO VIEW IT AND BEFORE IT NEVER STOPPED ME.
  • Posted By: MelindaI LIKE THE NEW WEB PAGE KEEP THIS ONE! ITS EASIER TO READ AND GET TO THINGS.
  • Posted By: Volley MomThe only thing in life consistent is change. We all need change to keep life interesting. Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% how you deal with it. Learn to deal with things in life a little better. I happen to like the new site.
  • Posted By: Bling BlingLike the new site, but like asked before why are you running the competitions headlines? Also another recommendation - somewhat croweded but hey it is the news so I will live with it
  • Posted By: BuckeyeI like the new site. Just get sick of seeing the shaking "classmate.com" advertisement. But, they pay a bill I'm sure.
  • Posted By: annI HATE THE NEW SIT IT WONT FIT ON MY SCREEN RIGHT ITS MESSED UP CHANGE IT BACK PLEASE HURRRY
  • Posted By: annlove the new site
  • Posted By: JenniferI don't like the new page either, I know change is something you have to get used to but....just my opinion.
  • Posted By: IdiotsUAreThe United States of America was founded under God! The creator of this earth, the father of our Savior Jesus Christ. He is why we even have Christmas. So say Christmas an not holidays! If you want to say holidays then go to another county or even California it might as be its own.
  • Posted By: yuckI don't like change, please go back to the other website.
  • Posted By: BobWSAZ, Why are you linking to WOWK headlines on your website? Even linking to the Daily Mail, Gazette, and H-D isn't smart - because in the online world, they're even more of a competitor to you.
  • Posted By: BobSomeone could be shopping for Hanukkah gifts. Read a book other than just the Bible.
  • Posted By: BibleThumpersIt's actually a pagan festival for the Winter Solstice. The Christians adopted it as Christ's birthday later on and even adopted many of the pagan items, such as putting up a tree and having a great feast.
  • Posted By: git is the stupidest thing I have ever heard, to be offended by the word "Holiday", this all comes from you bible thumpers that all want to tell other people how to think and what to say. You offend me! This is the Holidays! Even 50 years ago before all this ridiculous crap started, cards said Happy Holidays, because it covered Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's, it is the Holiday Season! So Season's Greetings and Happy Holidays Y'all!
  • Posted By: to Lady A:The "holiday" season also encompasses Hanukkah, a major holiday for those of us who follow the Jewish faith. We also give gifts and do "holiday" shopping this season; thankfully WSAZ is less ignorant than you are and recognizes that their viewership reflects more than one faith.
  • Posted By: to Lady AFYI, Hanukah is also coming up and we of the jewish faith also exchange gifts during this HOLIDAY season. I, for one, am thankful that WSAZ considers all of their viewers. Your comment was incredibly ignorant.
  • Posted By: What the heckI agree with Pat, I'm not liking the new page AT ALL.
  • Posted By: Christian not offendedOk there Lady A, just slow down a minute. Huntingtonian made a good point. Have you ever heard of Hanukah? Some people shop for Hanukah. Jesus was Jewish, so don't tell me that being a Jew is a sin, & Christmas is THE ONLY HOLIDAY this time of year. Yes, I too love to hear MERRY CHRISTMAS, but I refuse to become upset when someone says happy holidays. How do you know if when you say MERRY CHRISTMAS to someone, your not saying it to a Jewish person? Do you ever hear them make a big fat stink about it? NO!!!, you don't. So I think you should just be happy that God has given you another day on this Earth. So that you have the time to celebrate, with your family, whatever holiday you choose. I've decided to say HAPPY MERRY KWANZ~MA~KA that way I've covered them all.
  • Posted By: PatMuch like New Coke and the new Marco I think you've made a mistake with the new web pagedesign. I don't use Yahoo because the site is too cluttered and I feel the same about your new page. More is not necessarily better!
  • Posted By: AriIt is CHRISTMAS it is the time we celebrate Christ being born, not Kwanzza or Hanukah. Kwanzza is racist anyways it's a celebration of being black. I have no problem with people saying Happy whatever it is but I am NOT going to watch what i say and not say Marry Christmas becasue it might offend people
  • Posted By: LadyA`The question was, Did you do any Holiday shopping over the weekend? The shopping they were referring was Christmas shopping. What other holiday shopping would we be doing? Thanksgiving was over. It offended me like many others. It is the Christmas season and I want to see the word Christmas used, not holiday or xmas.
  • Posted By: HuntingtonianI agree with Anonymous!! It is the "holiday season" and by definition, it encompasses all of the holidays that are coming, not just Christmas. I also am a christian and see something inherintly wrong with pigeon holing this time of year to simply "Merry Christmas." What I find really offensive is those of you who believe that it is ok to say "Christmas" but would be outraged if "Happy Kwanza" or "Happy Hanukah" appeared anywhere. So, that being said: HAPPY HOLIDAYS and a JOYOUS NEW YEAR to all!!
  • Posted By: Holiday is in referance to ALL holidays this time of year. I have been saying Happy Holidays since I was a kid, growing up during the 80's. Christmas is not the only holiday this time of year. We did just celebrate Thanksgiving, remember. I am a Christian, that is not offended by the phrase HAPPY HOLIDAYS.
  • Posted By: annI agree with ladyA its CHRISTMAS
  • Posted By: LadyAWSAZ- Could you please change the word Holiday to Christmas on your question? The word Holiday offends me.
