CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A Charleston man who fed meat-wrapped
razor blades to his neighbor's four dogs will spend one to three
years in prison.

John F. Hively was sentenced Wednesday in Kanawha County Circuit
Court after pleading guilty to one count of felony animal cruelty.
In exchange for his February plea, three other counts were dropped.

According to a criminal complaint, all four dogs suffered cuts
in their mouths in June 2005. One dog had a razor blade in its
stomach and had to have surgery.

Sheriff's deputies found razor blades and rubber gloves with
meat on them in Hively's trash.

eFeeding razor blades to a dog falls into that cruel and inhuman area for sure but feeding hamburger laced with exlax, on the other hand, is an excellent training aid if you want to get the dog owner's attention without really harming the dog. Personally, I hate dog owners. They're like smokers, they have no concern for other people or property, especially those people that don't share their enthusiasm about their habit or their dog in this case. Most dog owners think their little precious pup has every right to come over and mess in your yard and then when you or your kids happen to step in it and track it back into your house where it ruins your carpet, their attitude is oh well...I'm sorry. Well, "I'm sorry" doesn't pay the piper ace! Quite frankly, I think most folks just want dog owners to be more respectful and when they aren't and they cop the attitude with you, then you have to break out the training aids and teach them how to do unto others as you would have them do unto!

if im remembering right these dogs where in their fenced in back yard and he had previously done harm to these dogs befor the razors. with that said even if they are crapping in your yard or running lose you have no right to harm them nor should you want to. call the authorities or better yet talk to the owners people get angry and automatically start doing extreme things when a simple conversation would prolly solve the problem.

Posted by: Maddi on Sep 6, 2008 at 12:56 AM
I agree this guy needs to be put in prison for abusing these innocent dogs. So what if they were in his yard or if they wasn't in his yard. He had no right to harm these animals if he wanted something done with them then he should have called the animal control. No person has the right to kill or harm these animals. People need to get a heart and stop being cold. And to Kathy everyone praising you about your comment that we should pay more attention to the kids that are born well yes i do agree with you but also there's enough room in this world to have the unborn to be born. They have rights too. Girls want to mess around and get pregnant and then can't handle having a baby so they go out and get a abortion why? It's not the babies fault the mother wanted to mess around. There are many people in this country who would love to adopt a child. Why kill the innocent.

Kathy S doesn't need anything but a pat on the back! I agree with her 100%. Maybe she should be on the ticket. What is your take on bar owners rights to allow smoking Kathy?

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 5, 2008 at 04:14 PM
here's to Kathy, You said everything that I would have said. It is all too true. I agree with you 150%

Posted by: Sad..... on Sep 5, 2008 at 02:36 PM
Seriouly, he should have to eat them. WIth nothing to drink. Eat them & then try to use the restroom. He should have to learn his lesson. Animals are animals and they have feelings too. What a low life.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 5, 2008 at 02:14 PM
Jerome, the government does tell you how are are supposed to treat your children. No abuse and no neglect. If you do either, you lose your kids. You can hurt children for bugging you in your yard, so why would you hurt a dog for being in your yard? If the dog was vicious and dangerous, then I can understand taking care of that, but otherwise, there is NO excuse for what this disgusting man has done.

Posted by: Jack on Sep 5, 2008 at 02:09 PM
If these had been my pets, he wouldn't have made it to jail.

Posted by: Lady on Sep 5, 2008 at 01:24 PM
Maybe his neighbors should have kept the dogs away from him. Obviously they didn't watch their dogs or they let them run loose.

Posted by: animal lover on Sep 5, 2008 at 11:40 AM
Those dogs were not his property jerome! And this is not a story about abortion. If those had been my dogs, I would not have called the police. I would have shoved a pipe up his rear end then about 10 yards of razor wire then pull the pipe out and told him to run while i hold the other end of the razor wire so he can get it out!!!!!I would like to do the same to you animal haters as well!!!!WSAZ please post this one.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 5, 2008 at 10:12 AM
Jerome, The reason that the Government has to end up telling people how to care for their Children and pets is that obviously there are people that don't know how. Children and pets are being abused and killed by the Parents and owners. As parents, we do not have the right to hurt our kids. As a child I was abused, phsically , sexually and mentally. No-one stepped in and helped me until it was too late. My life was pretty much ruined. I would have pets and he would kill them in front of me, that's always with me. I treasure my daughter and all of my pets, they are so special to me.

Posted by: TO FRANK TRIGG on Sep 5, 2008 at 10:12 AM
I AGREE WITH YOU 100% AND NOR DO I CARE WHAT PEOPLE SAY OR RESPOND BACK TO MY COMMENT. THE FACT IS THAT PEOPLE NEED TO KEEP THEIR ANIMALS IN THEIR OWN YARD AND NO LET THEM RUN LOOSE. IM TIRED OF THE DOGS AROUND HERE CRAPPING IN MY YARD AND MY KIDS STEPPING IN IT. THATS WHY I DONT HAVE ANIMALS. PLUS THEY GET IN MY GARBAGE. PEOPLE ARE TOO LAZY TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR ANIMALS PROPERLY, THEREFORE, SOMEONE HAS TO TAKE CARE OF THEM ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. NOW CALL ME AN UNEDUCATED HILLBILLY ALL YOU GUYS WANT I DONT CARE. I KNOW WHAT AND WHO I AM AND THATS ALL THAT MATTERS.

Posted by: Donna on Sep 5, 2008 at 06:58 AM
Now that is the meanest thing I had heard orf someone doing to an animal. How could someone do such a thing!

Posted by: anonymous on Sep 4, 2008 at 11:24 PM
It is ashame that people can kill or severly injure another Human Being even children and NOTHING is done about it!

Posted by: Jerome on Sep 4, 2008 at 08:11 PM
There the government goes again telling a man what he can do with his property. Next thing they will come in tell him how he can treat his kids. What is this world coming to? I have lots of dogs myself and would not do this to my investment but I would not want the government coming to my crib and telling me what I can do with my livestock.

What's the problem?

Posted by: Kath on Sep 4, 2008 at 05:18 PM
To concerned citizen, If that is true (about this man having a dog chained up in the woods) please report this to the local law inforcement agency or to the local humane society. Please! It is beyond my understanding why a person would be so evil and cruel as to feed baited meat with razor blades in it to dogs. This dangerous man deserves every second of his prison sentence.

Posted by: Good Grief on Sep 4, 2008 at 03:42 PM
Frank, Carl and Skip.....you need a hug and therapy..Kathy S....you just need some anger management classes....

Posted by: Daryl on Sep 4, 2008 at 02:58 PM
I would not hurt or injure any pet but when you have neighbors all around you with 18 barking dogs and 24/7 every day it gets a little tiresome!

Posted by: Local Yokel on Sep 4, 2008 at 01:33 PM
I live right beside this guy! We're moving before he gets out of jail.

Posted by: concerned citizen on Sep 4, 2008 at 12:35 PM
The sad part of it all is that this man is still able to keep his own dog, although he keeps it chained to a tree in the woods. I am guessing he isn't supposed to have a pet and no one from the courts have bothered to investigate and take the pet away from him.

To "Anon" who had to make this about abortion! Cant you right wing ZEALOTS EVER just keep your stupid thoughts to yourself? You do not love God a BIT more than those of us who dont thump our Bibles @ every photo op & use God as a weapon! you start in on abortion of unborn FETUSES yet you certainly dont give a d*mn about those kids ALREADY born do ya now? Your wonderful GOP party could care LESS about providing food, housing, health care, utilities for THEM OR passing laws to protect THEM from abusive parents/foster parents or other perverted people! Why dont you try worrying about THEM? They're ALREADY born & are PEOPLE! Good God, get a LIFE yourself AND help those babies/children who ARE alive to SURVIVE in this world once they ARE born! People like you make me sick. You don't care about ANYONE but your own self serving ideas! God loves animals & he loves babies already BORN who need your "protection"! Notice unlike YOU Im not hiding b/hind "anon" either!

TOO MUCH PLEA BARGAINING IN CRIME! Be tougher on ALL crime and set a better example. People aren't afraid to commit crime because they know there is a way to plea it down to a lesser charge.

Posted by: Pee Wee on Sep 4, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Frank Trigg, Maybe you would like a taste of razor blades. This judge needs to let Judge Capper know how to punish people for animal abuse. Capper must not know animal abuse is illegal.

Posted by: Dog Lover on Sep 4, 2008 at 10:19 AM
I think when this guy does get out, that there should be a ban that he can't own or be around any type of animal.Animals look to us for their safety and well being. He should get more time in jail for this.As for the judge he shouldn't let him out early for this crime. If the judge does he's as guily as the man doing it.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 4, 2008 at 10:05 AM
This is for Frank Trigg, Maybe someone should chain you up, you uneducated hillbilly. You said you would have done the same thing, and you could go to prison too. Then you would be somebody's bit--!. It does not matter if the dogs were messing in his yard, they didn't deserve to eat razor blades. I'll bet your'e the kind of hick that shoots animals if they don't do what you want them to do. People like you are useless pieces of space on this earth. Anyone that doesn't like animals is not to be trusted.

Posted by: Brad Pitt on Sep 4, 2008 at 10:03 AM
Michelle your compassion for human life amazes me,your not any better this man.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 4, 2008 at 09:26 AM
How many of you support the abortion of a beautiful innocent baby? I agree he should not have done this but many people support the murder of a baby all the while crying out for the protection of animals! Let's protect both!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: skip on Sep 4, 2008 at 09:19 AM
This man was wrong to attack the dogs.He should have attacked the owners, and he would have got a lesser sentence.

Posted by: carl on Sep 4, 2008 at 09:09 AM
I am sure he had a reason, like the dogs barked all the time, some people think that their right to have dogs is more important than the neighborhoods right to peace and quiet.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 4, 2008 at 08:57 AM
I agree that people need to take more responsibility for their pets and keep them in a fenced yard for their safety..BUT to feed them razors is just plan cruel and sick. The guy needs some mental help and so does anyone else who thinks this is ok..How about walking over there and knocking on the guys door and asking him politely to enclose his dogs?

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 4, 2008 at 08:51 AM
Frank Trigg your need help. i can't even believe I'm replying to your comment.

Posted by: Frank Trigg on Sep 4, 2008 at 08:11 AM
What if the dogs were leaving a mess in this guys yard? I would have done the same thing to them. The dogs should have been chained up and not left on the loose.

Posted by: Jason on Sep 4, 2008 at 07:53 AM
What was the sentence? Not enough im sure. This is sickening, that man don't deserve to be cared for by taxpayers.

Posted by: Pablo on Sep 4, 2008 at 06:51 AM
Once again with a plea and a "do-nothing" judge and a criminal gets off with a slap on the wrist. This happens all the time. One to three years? Get real. We all know that the average time served is 1/3 of the sentence. Meaning - he can be out in as little as four months. Our justice system needs overhauled. The current judges, like this one, needs not only fired, but ran out of the country.

Posted by: michelle on Sep 4, 2008 at 06:32 AM
can i please feed him ? id like to deal with this one

Posted by: Chistina on Sep 4, 2008 at 02:29 AM
I agree Carol. Plus, i think that if a person can hurt a innocent defenseless animal what can they do to a child? What if it was a child he had done that too in either case both injured parties would have been helpless. Being heartless is being heartless it doesn't matter who or what the injustice has been done against. What makes animals any less important?

Posted by: Lucy on Sep 4, 2008 at 01:21 AM
Someone should seriously force that man to eat meat with razor blades.

Posted by: Miss M on Sep 4, 2008 at 01:06 AM
What a psycho path, who thinks to do something this horrible to an animal?

Posted by: wvmom on Sep 4, 2008 at 12:53 AM
One more idiot we are paying to keep in jail. Can't we spend the money on something better? Like get this guy some help?

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 4, 2008 at 12:47 AM
from an animal lover's view.. this man needs more than just jail time. if it was a human we would call it attempted murder. this man is just a low life scum bag who needs help

Posted by: Kathy S on Sep 3, 2008 at 11:28 PM
Also want to add that had these been MY dogs or cats or any pet or animal he did this to, well, I doubt they would have had to come arrest him period! Do NOT mess with my family or my pets or ANYONE's pets or animals around me because I'm not tolerant of evil or cruel "people". Neither are most caring people with loving open hearts

Posted by: Kathy S on Sep 3, 2008 at 11:26 PM
GOOD!!!! As well he SHOULD! I agree with Carol - he should be glad I wasn't the judge & jury on this one either. I would have given him LIFE! Anyone who would do such a horrible thing to animals...well imagine what he would do or HAS done to humans too! I MUCH prefer my pets and animals period to most "humans" so I have no mercy on this jerk.

Posted by: Carol on Sep 3, 2008 at 10:43 PM
I'm an animal lover. The Bible says that a righteous man cares for his animals. He can thank God that I wasn't the judge & jury on this one. 1 to 3 is a laugh. He needs some help for mental instability.

  • Posted By: drsenileI realize I live in the ultra-exclusive suburb of Milton, but I am curious as to the reason gas prices (for one) are consistently higher than our less fortunate neighbors (like Huntington). As of tonight, there is still a 16 cents per gallon differential between Milton and Huntington (and we are NOT lower). I guess we are helping to pay for improvements to the mayors pet projects.

  • Posted By: git is the stupidest thing I have ever heard, to be offended by the word "Holiday", this all comes from you bible thumpers that all want to tell other people how to think and what to say. You offend me! This is the Holidays! Even 50 years ago before all this ridiculous crap started, cards said Happy Holidays, because it covered Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's, it is the Holiday Season! So Season's Greetings and Happy Holidays Y'all!
  • Posted By: to Lady A:The "holiday" season also encompasses Hanukkah, a major holiday for those of us who follow the Jewish faith. • Posted By: to Lady AFYI, Hanukah is also coming up and we of the jewish faith also exchange gifts during this HOLIDAY season. I, for one, am thankful that WSAZ considers all of their viewers. Your comment was incredibly ignorant.
  • Posted By: What the heckI agree with Pat, I'm not liking the new page AT ALL.
  • Posted By: Christian not offendedOk there Lady A, just slow down a minute. Huntingtonian made a good point. Have you ever heard of Hanukah? Some people shop for Hanukah. Jesus was Jewish, so don't tell me that being a Jew is a sin, & Christmas is THE ONLY HOLIDAY this time of year. Yes, I too love to hear MERRY CHRISTMAS, but I refuse to become upset when someone says happy holidays. How do you know if when you say MERRY CHRISTMAS to someone, your not saying it to a Jewish person? Do you ever hear them make a big fat stink about it? NO!!!, you don't. So I think you should just be happy that God has given you another day on this Earth. So that you have the time to celebrate, with your family, whatever holiday you choose. I've decided to say HAPPY MERRY KWANZ~MA~KA that way I've covered them all.
  • Posted By: PatMuch like New Coke and the new Marco I think you've made a mistake with the new web pagedesign. I don't use Yahoo because the site is too cluttered and I feel the same about your new page. More is not necessarily better!
  • Posted By: AriIt is CHRISTMAS it is the time we celebrate Christ being born, not Kwanzza or Hanukah. Kwanzza is racist anyways it's a celebration of being black. I have no problem with people saying Happy whatever it is but I am NOT going to watch what i say and not say Marry Christmas becasue it might offend people
  • Posted By: LadyA`The question was, Did you do any Holiday shopping over the weekend? The shopping they were referring was Christmas shopping. What other holiday shopping would we be doing? Thanksgiving was over. It offended me like many others. It is the Christmas season and I want to see the word Christmas used, not holiday or xmas.
  • Posted By: HuntingtonianI agree with Anonymous!! It is the "holiday season" and by definition, it encompasses all of the holidays that are coming, not just Christmas. I also am a christian and see something inherintly wrong with pigeon holing this time of year to simply "Merry Christmas." What I find really offensive is those of you who believe that it is ok to say "Christmas" but would be outraged if "Happy Kwanza" or "Happy Hanukah" appeared anywhere. So, that being said: HAPPY HOLIDAYS and a JOYOUS NEW YEAR to all!!
  • Posted By: Holiday is in referance to ALL holidays this time of year. I have been saying Happy Holidays since I was a kid, growing up during the 80's. Christmas is not the only holiday this time of year. We did just celebrate Thanksgiving, remember. I am a Christian, that is not offended by the phrase HAPPY HOLIDAYS.
  • Posted By: annI agree with ladyA its CHRISTMAS
  • Posted By: LadyAWSAZ- Could you please change the word Holiday to Christmas on your question? The word Holiday offends me.
