CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A bankrupt clothing retailer says they are going to be closing several stores here in our area.

A spokesperson with Steve and Barry's says they are closing about 100 stores across the country.

Those include the stores at the Charleston Town Center, the Huntington Mall and the Kyova Mall in Boyd County.

There is no exact timeline on when the stores will shut their doors for good, but company officials say they will begin "store closing sales" in the next few weeks.

Steve and Barry's filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.

katy, I think you meant "Godsend." God doesn't sin.

Posted by: lets blame someone else on Sep 10, 2008 at 10:26 PM
cracks me up ....everytime there is something negative President Bush gets blamed. Rich? ok is it me or doesn't obama have how many houses... Everyone, everywhere, has the "its someone else's fault" mentality....how sad

Posted by: katy on Sep 10, 2008 at 03:37 PM
okay cheapo...glad u can afford a 40 dollar shirt..for those of us who are on a fixed budget that store was a God Sin. I havent had much problems with their clothing...sad to see them leave. but will go to the close out sale..

Posted by: No Cheapo on Sep 10, 2008 at 11:33 AM
No wonder. They sell their stuff too cheap. I fully expect to pay $40 for a t-shirt.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 10, 2008 at 08:06 AM
well the huntington malls isnt bad. i have never had a prob. with there clothes.

Posted by: A on Sep 10, 2008 at 03:28 AM
I always like to do some of my xmas shopping there for the ones i dont spend much on. You always had to check over there clothing some had stains and some was odd colored. The girls and ladies clothing was nice. Styles just like aeropostale. But i got so tired of seeing everyone is the same Ohio State leather jackets.. thats what burned me out on SB.

Another example of how much of a mess George W. Bush is making in this country. Our economy is at such a state that if it was to go any lower, we'd be in a depression. His tax give-a-way to the rich isn't working. At least I didn't vote for this liar of a president either time.

Posted by: Zach on Sep 9, 2008 at 10:44 PM
The jeans you can wear maybe 10 times, the hoodies the pockets rip off, but the t-shirts are not bad, but the fact remains one of the main reasons for the shutdown is the fact they were not making any money which is understandable because like i said the jeans and hoodies get returned which for 8 bucks for a hoodie isn't bad anyway but you keep getting those 8 dollar hoodies returned back somethings gotta give

Posted by: Heather on Sep 9, 2008 at 08:40 PM
Judy- I totally agree with you. I'm not on welfare either (doesn't matter anyways for this article) but my boyfriend loved their cargo shorts and S&B they're like $10-$14... AE $50-$80...Plus they DO have funny shirts.... IN FACT, it's the same kind of shirts they have at Spencers... whoever said thug is just a racist and needs to be strung up themselves and whoever said it was for welfare (or to the ignoramous that called it "warefare") where do you shop? Unless it's Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, DvF, Cavalli, Alexander McQueen, Gucci (some Gucci cause they're getting cheap), Armani, Versace. (etc.-list goes on) then you aren't buying "high end" clothing. Think before you speak...because NOTHING in the Huntington Mall is high end..and don't anyone say Dooney & Bourke because that's trash too.

Posted by: Tom on Sep 9, 2008 at 07:32 PM
Thugged out or not they have AFFORDABLE clothes for people Its ashame that people would say bad things about people who are trying to help rich and poor people shopped at this store. how do you think rich people stay rich, they watch their money. To who every said that S&B was for welfare you can go str8 2 h--- maybe you ain't never been on it but alot of people have. I think it says alot about our country when a tank of gas in an suv cost more than all the school clothes for your child. We have it backwards. I hope S&B finds away to stay open

Posted by: judy on Sep 9, 2008 at 06:37 PM
whats happening now a good store with cheap prices and i am not on welfare i just like the fact that you could find a store in the mall with cheap prices i bought my husband a couple of jackets for ten dollars that is not seen today especially at the mall well i wont be going to the mall alot now because every store in there is high priced so much for the working class people

Posted by: East Ky. Mom on Sep 9, 2008 at 05:51 PM
S&B's is a wonderful store. I am no thug and we are middle class. My 17 yr. old loves their jeans no one else sells anything that fits her in height! I hate to see it leave we get all our college favorites there!!

Posted by: Jamal on Sep 9, 2008 at 03:54 PM
I love Steve and Barry's. The jeans are dabomb.

Posted by: sadden on Sep 9, 2008 at 02:09 PM
This really sucks, my kids love the whole comfy pants and tee shirts, long sleeved tee's.Where else can I buy them at such an affordable price? I don't see anything Thugged Out in the store! I got my son 3 pairs of the jeans 2 years ago and they are still perfectly fine.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 9, 2008 at 12:49 PM
Are hoodies "thugged out" if you buy the appropriate size??? Steve and Barrys is only thugged out to the Weird Al "White and NerdY" crowd LOL

Posted by: Donald on Sep 9, 2008 at 11:50 AM
I didnt know so many people n warefare had computers to comment about stuff like this

Posted by: Brittany on Sep 9, 2008 at 11:27 AM
First off I cant believe someone used the term "thugged out" in Kentucky. Move to the city sweetie! lol Wow that made me laugh. But yea S&B was a good place to buy cute tee's it will suck for the mall...they barely have enough to keep open now.

Posted by: Dave on Sep 9, 2008 at 11:21 AM
"Cheap clothes and cheap prices", should have been their motto. No wonder they are bankrupt. None of their stuff ever fits the way it is supposed to. I have gotten better T-shirts at yard sales. Too bad we can't get a nice store to take its place in the Town Center. It is a nice location, but I am sure the rent is outrageous.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 9, 2008 at 10:36 AM
To Ted, for you to say that Steve & Barry's is for people on welfare is wrong. My famiy has NEVER been on welfare. We find so many good clothes there. I think the clothing is right with today's styles. It shouldn't matter what name is on the clothing. I think it's stupid to pay $60 for a shirt, or $150 for shoes. People who pay that much for their clothing are the ones who need to learn to budget their money. Not selling the "name brands" does not make this store a thrift shop. Different stores are available for different styles. If you prefer to spend more than needed, you have that right. However for those of us who know how to manage our money, & get good looking clothes, we have, or rather had Steve & Barry's.

Posted by: cee on Sep 9, 2008 at 10:18 AM
well there sure is snoddy people on here.Must be nice to not have to go to steve and barrys!!! lower than low class!!! better everyday people than water up your nose when it rains!!! you put those expensive clothes on one leg at a time too,, bet you hate to do what us low class people do,, maybe you need to find a new way to get dressed!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 9, 2008 at 08:46 AM
Steve and Barry's is such an awesome store. Its so afforable and has the best part!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 9, 2008 at 07:53 AM
Its not a store for lower class or welfare people. I make $50,000 a yr and I love that place! It's also a great place to go to support your coledge.

Posted by: Annie on Sep 9, 2008 at 07:48 AM
I'm guessing that includes the ones in Houston too :(

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 10:36 PM
This is such a terrible thing to hear. My husband has been shopping at this store since they first opened. My girls love this store as well. My one daughter spent $180 on school clothes, & got so much. They have great clothes at great prices. Wal-Mart doesn't even have prices this good.

Posted by: mike on Sep 8, 2008 at 07:15 PM
well another store gone.little business dont stand a chance.if it is not putting money in the rich peoples pocket then they dont want it around.

Posted by: Square Peg on Sep 8, 2008 at 06:38 PM
Uh, maybe it was Sarah Jessica Parker's ugly mug that scared all the customers off and that's why they filed bankruptcy.

Posted by: anon on Sep 8, 2008 at 06:05 PM
um who cares? Their clothes suck anyway....

Posted by: Pam on Sep 8, 2008 at 03:52 PM
OH man!! Our family loves this store. I bought a pair of the Sarah Jessica Parker jeans there last Christmas and I love them. They were $6.00. I can assure you, I am no thug. I am a 42 year old mom who likes to dress in style. I get a lot of Christmas presents there for teenagers. We will miss this store very much! I agree with the other comments about Old Navy. I would like to see some stores open in the TEays Valley area.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 03:41 PM
i think its funny that someone called steve and barrys "thugged out". how many thugs do u know that wear $9 coats and shoes. yea right !! they always have the top dollar/brand named shoes. steve and barrys was a shop for the lower than low class.

Posted by: Ashley Decker on Sep 8, 2008 at 03:29 PM
This makes me sad. Most of my clothes come from Steve and Berry's. I will miss the store in the Kyova Mall.

Posted by: Ted on Sep 8, 2008 at 02:07 PM
Thank God! This is for welfares. I went once and the clothes lasted a week! So I went and paid more for better products. They say you get what you paid for, that should be Steve and Berrys slogan!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 02:04 PM
No lm . It's not camo that thugs are looking for its the pants hanging halfway down your hindend and the oversized t-shirts. Camo is a redneck thing... But according to some, Youngs dept store sells alot of the gear that gangs wear. I liked going to S&B, it was affordable and the sales staff are really helpful. Shame. I agree with one other commenter, I think an Old Navy store would do really well here.

Posted by: ed on Sep 8, 2008 at 01:18 PM
Good one Im: I love all the clothes since I had to get a second job I could afford the pants and shirt I needed....Now I know why they weren't taking job apps!!! Hate to see them leave

Posted by: Hi Hater! on Sep 8, 2008 at 12:30 PM
Please believe no thugs I know shop in that cheap store Anonymous on Sep 7, 2008 at 10:26 PM. Step your game up, and keep your son out of there.

Posted by: Common Sense on Sep 8, 2008 at 12:15 PM
Gee, a winter coat for $9? It's amazing that they are going out of business, isn't it? DUH! People like a bargain, but Steve & Barry's stupidly ascribed a "lower than low class" reputation for themselves, and that was their downfall. A bad marketing strategy for sure. Getting Sarah Jessica Parker to endorse a line of clothes was a smart move, but too little, too late.

Posted by: Dee on Sep 8, 2008 at 11:44 AM
I hate to hear this. My boys loved buying t-shirts there. This was one of our favorite stores.

Posted by: Cosumer too on Sep 8, 2008 at 11:33 AM
To Anonymous sep 7 1026pm:...I have bought many cloting items from S&B's...I am far from being a "thug" and I do not find the clothing to be THugged Out.....as customer stated...where else can you get a coat for 9$. You may be able to go spend 100$ on a coat..but I know I cannot...nor can many other people. I love the clothes there and will miss them...just another economic loss for our area.

Posted by: customer on Sep 8, 2008 at 10:47 AM
That sucks for the kyova mall. You know, they are just now getting up and running, and actually getting built back up, so that people actually stop in and look around. Now with S&B gone, I hope they can find something to keep business coming.

Posted by: No say it ain't so on Sep 8, 2008 at 10:30 AM
Oh phooy, Hank & I just loved the whole shopping experience at S & B's! Hank & Steve met in culinary school back in the 80's and they remain close friends even today. Best of luck Steve.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 10:06 AM
They should put an Old Navy in the Town Center or on Corridor G. It is reasonably priced, and would probably be a big hit in Charleston!

Posted by: lm on Sep 8, 2008 at 08:40 AM
To Anonymous who wrote that Steve and Barrys sell thugged out clothes> I disagree, its a store that sell college gear and affordable clothing. What are you looking for camo?

Posted by: anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 08:29 AM
i love steve and barry's! i can do all my x-mas shoping for my wife's side of the family for less than $50.00. they turn around and sell in a yard sell for $51.00, i love my wife's family. like a tooth ach.

Posted by: Claudette on Sep 8, 2008 at 07:51 AM
Yes, the one in Portsmouth IS closing. They already have signs in their windows.

Posted by: Dee on Sep 8, 2008 at 05:37 AM
TO ANONYMOUS EVERYONE CANT AFFORD TO SHOP FANCY , CLASSY STORES .THIS STORE HAS SOMETHING FOR FAMILIES ON A FIXED INCOME.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 12:13 AM
Oh no where will all of the wvu bandwagoners shop now? I guess there is always Walmart.

Posted by: New Boston on Sep 7, 2008 at 11:44 PM
Yeah, New Boston is closing too. It's sad to see them go. I really liked their clothes. Very affordable. I don't think they were "thugged out." They had a lot of sports clothing, and you could buy khaki pants, and funny t-shirts, and they had a lot of good clothes for teens. I hope someone else comes in in New Boston that has nice, affordable clothing. I don't like to buy my clothes at Walmart. They get holes in them the first time you wear it sometimes.

Posted by: Customer on Sep 7, 2008 at 11:26 PM
This is really sad. Steve and Barry's is a store where normal people from our area can go and buy nice, fashionable clothing for our family. I can't see how they could go bankrupt. Where else can you buy a winter coat for $9? It's sad to see them leave New Boston. Something else leaving our area.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 7, 2008 at 11:19 PM
i heard the one in portsmouth ohio was closing anyone know if its true?

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 7, 2008 at 10:26 PM
Oh well. Maybe they will put something a little more classy in there. That place is full of thugged out clothes.

  • Posted By: drsenileWell, I just attempted to submit a comment and it disappeared. And no, it wasn't my computer. My basic problem with this site...too much glitz, not enough substance; slow to load information; and, it appears none of the WSAZ staff ever read much of what's here and it might actually improve.

  • Posted By: drsenileI realize I live in the ultra-exclusive suburb of Milton, but I am curious as to the reason gas prices (for one) are consistently higher than our less fortunate neighbors (like Huntington). As of tonight, there is still a 16 cents per gallon differential between Milton and Huntington (and we are NOT lower). I guess we are helping to pay for improvements to the mayors pet projects.

  • Posted By: git is the stupidest thing I have ever heard, to be offended by the word "Holiday", this all comes from you bible thumpers that all want to tell other people how to think and what to say. You offend me! This is the Holidays! Even 50 years ago before all this ridiculous crap started, cards said Happy Holidays, because it covered Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's, it is the Holiday Season! So Season's Greetings and Happy Holidays Y'all!
  • Posted By: to Lady A:The "holiday" season also encompasses Hanukkah, a major holiday for those of us who follow the Jewish faith. We also give gifts and do "holiday" shopping this season; thankfully WSAZ is less ignorant than you are and recognizes that their viewership reflects more than one faith.
  • Posted By: to Lady AFYI, Hanukah is also coming up and we of the jewish faith also exchange gifts during this HOLIDAY season. I, for one, am thankful that WSAZ considers all of their viewers. Your comment was incredibly ignorant.
  • Posted By: What the heckI agree with Pat, I'm not liking the new page AT ALL.
  • Posted By: Christian not offendedOk there Lady A, just slow down a minute. Huntingtonian made a good point. Have you ever heard of Hanukah? Some people shop for Hanukah. Jesus was Jewish, so don't tell me that being a Jew is a sin, & Christmas is THE ONLY HOLIDAY this time of year. Yes, I too love to hear MERRY CHRISTMAS, but I refuse to become upset when someone says happy holidays. How do you know if when you say MERRY CHRISTMAS to someone, your not saying it to a Jewish person? Do you ever hear them make a big fat stink about it? NO!!!, you don't. So I think you should just be happy that God has given you another day on this Earth. So that you have the time to celebrate, with your family, whatever holiday you choose. I've decided to say HAPPY MERRY KWANZ~MA~KA that way I've covered them all.
  • Posted By: PatMuch like New Coke and the new Marco I think you've made a mistake with the new web pagedesign. I don't use Yahoo because the site is too cluttered and I feel the same about your new page. More is not necessarily better!
  • Posted By: AriIt is CHRISTMAS it is the time we celebrate Christ being born, not Kwanzza or Hanukah. Kwanzza is racist anyways it's a celebration of being black. I have no problem with people saying Happy whatever it is but I am NOT going to watch what i say and not say Marry Christmas becasue it might offend people
  • Posted By: LadyA`The question was, Did you do any Holiday shopping over the weekend? The shopping they were referring was Christmas shopping. What other holiday shopping would we be doing? Thanksgiving was over. It offended me like many others. It is the Christmas season and I want to see the word Christmas used, not holiday or xmas.
  • Posted By: HuntingtonianI agree with Anonymous!! It is the "holiday season" and by definition, it encompasses all of the holidays that are coming, not just Christmas. I also am a christian and see something inherintly wrong with pigeon holing this time of year to simply "Merry Christmas." What I find really offensive is those of you who believe that it is ok to say "Christmas" but would be outraged if "Happy Kwanza" or "Happy Hanukah" appeared anywhere. So, that being said: HAPPY HOLIDAYS and a JOYOUS NEW YEAR to all!!
  • Posted By: Holiday is in referance to ALL holidays this time of year. I have been saying Happy Holidays since I was a kid, growing up during the 80's. Christmas is not the only holiday this time of year. We did just celebrate Thanksgiving, remember. I am a Christian, that is not offended by the phrase HAPPY HOLIDAYS.
  • Posted By: annI agree with ladyA its CHRISTMAS
  • Posted By: LadyAWSAZ- Could you please change the word Holiday to Christmas on your question? The word Holiday offends me.
