Public Safety Committee helps pay for Nitro warehouse fire

Checks will soon be written to the fire departments who were most affected by the Nitro fire.

On Wednesday, Kanawha County's Public Safety Grant Committee decided to recommend giving the four departments nearly $70,000. Nitro, St. Albans, Dunbar and even Charleston are all out thousands of dollars after the massive tire fire earlier this month. Last week the Kanawha County Commission decided they would act as quickly as possible to get those departments money to cover their immediate needs so they can keep operating.

Today representatives from those fire departments told the public safety grant committee exactly what needs to be replaced. Nitro and St. Albans were the departments hit the hardest, so they are getting the biggest chunk of the money. Nitro will see $35,000 while St. Albans will get about $15,000. Now those amounts don't cover all of their cost, but county officials say it is a start.

Now the grant committee hopes ultimately between insurance or even a lawsuit they will get that money back. But for now these departments need new protective gear and to pay their firefighters overtime. Nitro will use some of their money to get their ladder truck repaired.
