UPDATE @ 12:30pm Wednesday
IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A third suspect in a shooting in Burlington, Ohio is now under arrest.

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department reports that Preston Curry, 32 years old, is now in custody. The Huntington Police Department arrested Curry Tuesday night. He is in the Western Regional Jail pending extradition.

Original Story
IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) --An attempted robbery ends with one person shot in the back, another in jail, and a 3rd on the run from police.

Lawrence County Ohio Sheriff Tim Sexton says the incident began at an apartment off County Road 1 in the Burlington area around 10 Sunday night.

The sheriff says 3 men went to that apartment with the intent to commit a theft. He says inside the apartment, a struggle ensued between 2 of the men and the couple who lived their. During that struggle, Sexton says one of the men was shot by the occupants.

The sheriff says the 3 then fled to the Sheridan Manor apartment complex in the South Point area. That's when emergency crews were called to treat the wounded man. The sheriff is not releasing his name or condition due to the ongoing investigation.

The sheriff says the person arrested is 27-year old Derrick Bailey of Columbus, Ohio. Bailey has been charged with complicity to commit aggravated robbery.

The sheriff say investigators are still looking for the 3rd man.

The sheriff say charges are not pending against the people who lived in the apartment where the shooting happened.

Last ngiht, we reported that two bystanders probably saved the man's life by stopping the bleeding.

We were also told that police beleived the shooting was drug related

To JZ: Why can't you replay to my post of Sept 16 at 3:02 AM?

Posted by: WHAT??? on Sep 18, 2008 at 02:26 AM
Actually the story involves drugs, guns and bad people. So, really politics snaps into place nicely.

Posted by: TRUTH on Sep 17, 2008 at 06:09 PM
i used to live in the sheridan manor apts intil december 2005 when i moved out and bought my own home. that place is run by idiots (landmark managment)one of the previous managers killed his estranged wife and himself in a murder/suicide. that place is garbage.

Ya'll so bored with yourselves that this time tomorrow I will have done moved on and won't even be talkin about this incident. And for you guys you'll still be commentin on politics?? and what the second guys name is & whose on third?? And tryin to tie this shooting with the next shooting in Huntington or Charleston?? I bet half of ya'll are commentin on the Mayor's incident?? No 3 yr old deserves this, I agree and most 3 yr old's don't have parents that have 10 or more pds of weed at their house?? Go figure, but I guess if you don't know the people involved then I guess you wouldn't know all that. Maybe this has been a lesson learned for everyone involved, maybe the people that got robbed will quit selling illegal drugs and maybe the 3 robbers will have to sit and dwell for the next 10 to 20 yrs and ask themselves why they did something so stupid!!! I agree that the lady should've protected her and her family, she did a great job!!!

Posted by: burlington on Sep 16, 2008 at 08:45 PM
To better burlington, just like everyone else and their comments why don't you go get a hobby, jus cause I know somebody dont mean nothin!! And as a matter of fact I am a Class A citizen!! Matter of fact a triple AAA citizen. And about the kid, apparently the adults inside had no respect for their children to have drugs in their home. I guess this put a dent in their income, because unfortunately the police will be keeping an eye them I'm sure. And as for the drugs in the home, that weren't found, it takes no time for anyone to get the drugs out of the home before police show up. I didn't rob anyone nor will I so my friendship to the person involved has nothing to do with any of this nor do I feel I need to defend myself, you didnt see my name in the paper better burlington. And if you feel that there could be a better burlington, why don't you run for some type of an office that way you could do somethin for real instead of runnin your yap!!! Much luv

Posted by: sherry on Sep 16, 2008 at 05:08 PM
To Burlington,,, yes I agree with u but if drugs was the reason, The child is first in this matter no matter what, and providing for ur family no matter how it is just get it done cause the state wont help and cant afford gas to get to work and now it has come to this, blame politics or who ever makes u sleep better at night,, cause no matter why they were broken into, no one even a 3 year old deserves that,,, and is there were no drugs there then let it go,,,,and get ur own life,,,

I am sure that Putin would love someone like Palin as Vice-President....A halfwit a few heartbeats from the presidency. Than again she can see Russia from Alaska...They must be real scared. LOL!! Let me see McCain graduated 894 out of 899 at the Naval Academy and Palin went to 5 different colleges before finally finishing in journalism. I can you can be anything in this great country no matter how much of a twit you were in school.gmc

Enough already!!!! I just want to know why they won't release the name of the thief that got shot. They stated the name of the one they captured and they don't know the one that got away. Wonder who will be paying his hospital bill for the gunshot wound. Taxpayers, of course. Sorry he got shot, but if he wasn't there it wouldn't have happened.

Posted by: Better Burlington on Sep 16, 2008 at 02:47 PM
Hey Burlington : You sound like a class A citizen there! especially to be friends with the men who held a gun to a woman's head in front of her child and then try to defend it!! As you just said in your comment "No drugs were found there" so your post is pointless. Times are getting tougher for everyone but that is not an excuse to take a gun and rob anyone, for ANYTHING!! Sounds to me like Sherry has a life, so maybe you need to talk to the man in mirror now.. The ONLY thing I agree with you on is to keep politics out of this one. Unfortunately this kind of thing will always happen with people like your "friends" in our society and the lack of education and good jobs.

Posted by: JEN on Sep 16, 2008 at 01:24 PM
While can be bought anywhere, Sheridan is worse for drugs than burlington and both are worse than the village of south point. I'm just glad to see the law enforcement not go after people guarding there own home with a firearm. I think it just made it easyier for the cops to catch one of the crooks. Good for them. Bet the guys that tryed the robbery have friends that won't try to rob the shooters anytime soon. Maybe the other crimnals in the area will think twice before robing anyone.

Posted by: Burlington on Sep 16, 2008 at 11:50 AM
To Sherry, get a life!!Let me let you in on the real story and what really happened since I know the man that has been jailed for this incident!!They didnt go to the family to rob them of money??They went to this paticular family because these guys knew the family dealt with drugs, but from what I've heard there were no drugs there? So if they have a kid in this house hold then shame on them, the kid should be taken by the state because they are dealing drugs out of their own home!!!As for the foolish ones that are putting politics into it, I'll be thankful when the election is over so I don't have to listen to all of you guys making your arguments for the candidates, you guys should be put on the pay roll!! Politics have nothing to do with it except people are doing crazy things because in this day in age who can live even if you are working, who can make the all mighty dollar last till the next paycheck? Were all going to keep seeing the crime rate go up just wait and watch.

"I agree wit ya. Obama is going to make sure these things dont happen agin! I am glad be voting for a man with interigty. He will be america savior. bring us back to top! obama 08 change and hope 4 all"--Yeah, because Barack will magically stop all crime in America, fix the economy, and give you a big screen TV. No, and neither will McCain. Come on people, this was about a shooting, not the election.

to bad he diddent get them all.

Posted by: sherry on Sep 15, 2008 at 07:54 PM
three guys came in to rob this family and the family had just paid the bills and had nothing. They argued to bring them any and everything valuable, while he held the shot gun on the woman and man, thus waking up the 3 year old child, then the thieves aimed the gun on the child, that's when the mother took charge and attacked one of the gun men causing the gun to shoot one of the thieves,, now what the hell would u have done? and don't bring politics into something that is called burglary!! now my 2 cents worth for free,,

Neither Obama or McCain will do anything relating to gun laws. The existing laws will not be change in any major way. Dont be FOOLED by thinking GOP is NRA and The Dems are not. These issues are on the backburner in relation to bigger issues we face.

Vote oboma for tougher gun laws? Tyrome give me a break! If anyone breaks in my home and threaton's my family I bet my bottom dollar they will get shot just like these suspects did. We have the right to defend our self and our famlies. I like the laws just the way they are. Vote McCain!

COME ON IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO BECOMES PRESIDENT. THE WAR AGAINST DRUGS AND GUNS WILL NEVER GO AWAY. THIS WORLD IS ONLY GETTING WORSE.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 15, 2008 at 02:08 PM
Its not the guns we have to control, its the idiots that use the guns. You have to pull the trigger before they can do any harm.

Posted by: Heather M. Adkins on Sep 15, 2008 at 02:07 PM
You people need to get a life.. Obama and gun laws have nothing to do with it.. People need to stop trying to rob people and they won't get shot. Period.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 15, 2008 at 01:48 PM
if every household had a gun in it there would be fewer robberies

Posted by: anonymous on Sep 15, 2008 at 01:43 PM
what is this world coming to i know huntington is getting real bad but south point come on people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 15, 2008 at 01:30 PM
where was the apartment at in burlington? The owners next time should shoot to kill. If these people are stupid enough to break into your house they need to teach a lesson for every other moron after them and tell them we are not going to take it anymore and if they break into my house....come on im loaded and ready to shoot also. Nice shooting people.

Posted by: Renee on Sep 15, 2008 at 12:58 PM
if people would mind their own business then we would not need to know who it is.if u break into someones house and thaink nothing is going to happen u might want to think again.we dont need obama we just need people to have a little more respect for others.

Posted by: Alan on Sep 15, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Tyrome, It sounds to me like the people living in the apartment had a right to defend themselves. Avote vor Obama would take the right to defend yourself away. We all need to vote for McCain and Palin.

Posted by: Minnie on Sep 15, 2008 at 12:30 PM
FYI - This did not happen AT the Sheridan Manor Apts., it happened in a very nice apt complex across the street from Navy Trucking. There are a lot of children who live in this area... very scary... A woman was outside shouting and seemed terribly upset... everything was confusing from there & just a few mintues later the sheriffs arrived...

Posted by: mom of 2 on Sep 15, 2008 at 12:26 PM
Seems as though when there is a shooting anymore....it is drug related!!! Take them all to jail, lock them up, and throw away the key. That would be 3 less on the streets!!!!!

Posted by: David on Sep 15, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Why more gun laws? The man was shot by the person(s) who he was trying to rob, which in Ohio is lawful. Research House Bill 184 (it became law on 09-09-08). Guns do not kill people, it is the person pulling the trigger that kills people. You can lay a loaded gun on a table and watch it and I bet it will never fire unless the trigger manipulated. Anti-gun people amaze me, yes some guns do not need to be on the market, but everybody has a right to protect themselves and their family. An anti-gun person has no more right to keep me from owning a gun than I do forceing them to own one.

It is very sad to see young men getting involved with criminal activity to "get high" or make money

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 15, 2008 at 11:58 AM
some one shot and thinking it is drug related .. why was there no arrest made.. i bet not i wonder who is working for who. also why was there no names released..

Posted by: guns don't kill people, people kill people... on Sep 15, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Its not tougher gun laws that we need, we need tougher judges to hand down the laws that's already on the books. What happened to hard time for gun crime? Maybe tougher sentences on drug dealers.

Posted by: unknown on Sep 15, 2008 at 11:50 AM
know who, who is???

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 15, 2008 at 11:09 AM
To Tyrome Thanks for making it easier for me to decide McCain '08. I guess you believe Bush caused the gunman to pull the trigger. Blame drugs coming in from Detroit and Columbus and lack of action by the law enforcement in the area.

Posted by: Brandon on Sep 15, 2008 at 10:51 AM
Obama has nothing to do with anything about what happens around here. The things that are happening right now are still going to be happening no matter what. To me i think that it is b.s., he got shot in the back and still doesn't know who did it. I am one of his friends (the guy who got shot).

Posted by: Gayle on Sep 15, 2008 at 10:47 AM
Quote " We need to vote Obama so that we can have tougher gun laws. Unquote" As a gun owner I have to comment. I have my gun for my protection and for my family. Every day I log onto my computer and I read of home invasions, break ins, etc ,etc. The list goes on. I for one would not ever vote for someone that says we can't own a gun. Guns are not what kills people, it's the people that gets guns illegally for the purposes I mentioned above. They have NO regard for a human being, because they are animals themselves. I spend a great deal home alone with my children, and what we have we gotten it honest and by working hard. If someone tries to invade my home you can bet that I will USE my gun for protection. Material things can be replaced but my child's life cannot. I would die myself to protect them, and the person that comes through my door uninvited in the night or day time will not be walking when they leave here. Obama can take that to the bank!!!

Posted by: john on Sep 15, 2008 at 10:27 AM
im sure the gun just jumped up and shot him Tyrome, it had nothing to do with the drugs though did it ? wake up !

Posted by: WS on Sep 15, 2008 at 10:07 AM
Tougher gun laws will only hurt the people that obey the laws. Drug dealers know thier risks when they choose the life they do. I wish the victim and the family well. But for goodness sake don't ask for tougher gun laws, only the crooks will have them, how will we defend ourselves then!

Posted by: Joanne on Sep 15, 2008 at 10:04 AM
Tyrome or Tyrone, Gun Laws on guns like AK-47's would be a good thing, but to take the right to bear arms away would only allow the criminals to do more crime without any fear of repercussion. Vote for whomever you care to, but I'm voting for the ones that are going to allow me to retain my rights. Pesonally, I'd like to see more choice as far as candidates go, but I'm voting McCain/Palin. Too many communistic/dictoral countries looking to garner unrestricted nuclear capabilities for me to go with Obama. I wish both candidates would focus on the issues and explain exactly how they plan to implement them. As far as the shooting, it's a shame any time it happens, and for any reason. More than likely it's either over drugs or a woman/man. Praying for the victim and his/her family.

No shock in hearing this. South Point has long since become a heavy drug area. I just can't understand why nothing is ever done about it. Sure glad I dont have kids living in that area!!

Tougher guns will not keep guns out of criminals hands they will still have them.

Drugs, drugs, and more drugs. With all the drugs out there what do you think the chances are that your children and grandchildren will get on drugs? Its time to put an end to this before a new generation is infected. We need to adopt laws like you find in most Muslim and Middle Eastern countries; death penalty for drug dealers. Does that seem harsh? Yes it does, but left untreated you can just say goodbye to your children and grandchildren. Their lives will be wasted. Better to deal with it now because without severe punishment, its not going to take care of itself. Lets show some backbone like our ancestors did when they settled this country. We must make tough decisions and abide by them.

Posted by: Keith on Sep 15, 2008 at 06:33 AM

  • Posted By: Volley MomThe only thing in life consistent is change. We all need change to keep life interesting. Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% how you deal with it. Learn to deal with things in life a little better. I happen to like the new site.
  • Posted By: Bling BlingLike the new site, but like asked before why are you running the competitions headlines? Also another recommendation - somewhat croweded but hey it is the news so I will live with it
  • Posted By: BuckeyeI like the new site. Just get sick of seeing the shaking "classmate.com" advertisement. But, they pay a bill I'm sure.
  • Posted By: annI HATE THE NEW SIT IT WONT FIT ON MY SCREEN RIGHT ITS MESSED UP CHANGE IT BACK PLEASE HURRRY
  • Posted By: annlove the new site
  • Posted By: JenniferI don't like the new page either, I know change is something you have to get used to but....just my opinion.
  • Posted By: IdiotsUAreThe United States of America was founded under God! The creator of this earth, the father of our Savior Jesus Christ. He is why we even have Christmas. So say Christmas an not holidays! If you want to say holidays then go to another county or even California it might as be its own.
  • Posted By: yuckI don't like change, please go back to the other website.
  • Posted By: BobWSAZ, Why are you linking to WOWK headlines on your website? Even linking to the Daily Mail, Gazette, and H-D isn't smart - because in the online world, they're even more of a competitor to you.
  • Posted By: BobSomeone could be shopping for Hanukkah gifts. Read a book other than just the Bible.
  • Posted By: BibleThumpersIt's actually a pagan festival for the Winter Solstice. The Christians adopted it as Christ's birthday later on and even adopted many of the pagan items, such as putting up a tree and having a great feast.
  • Posted By: git is the stupidest thing I have ever heard, to be offended by the word "Holiday", this all comes from you bible thumpers that all want to tell other people how to think and what to say. You offend me! This is the Holidays! Even 50 years ago before all this ridiculous crap started, cards said Happy Holidays, because it covered Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's, it is the Holiday Season! So Season's Greetings and Happy Holidays Y'all!
  • Posted By: to Lady A:The "holiday" season also encompasses Hanukkah, a major holiday for those of us who follow the Jewish faith. We also give gifts and do "holiday" shopping this season; thankfully WSAZ is less ignorant than you are and recognizes that their viewership reflects more than one faith.
  • Posted By: to Lady AFYI, Hanukah is also coming up and we of the jewish faith also exchange gifts during this HOLIDAY season. I, for one, am thankful that WSAZ considers all of their viewers. Your comment was incredibly ignorant.
  • Posted By: What the heckI agree with Pat, I'm not liking the new page AT ALL.
  • Posted By: Christian not offendedOk there Lady A, just slow down a minute. Huntingtonian made a good point. Have you ever heard of Hanukah? Some people shop for Hanukah. Jesus was Jewish, so don't tell me that being a Jew is a sin, & Christmas is THE ONLY HOLIDAY this time of year. Yes, I too love to hear MERRY CHRISTMAS, but I refuse to become upset when someone says happy holidays. How do you know if when you say MERRY CHRISTMAS to someone, your not saying it to a Jewish person? Do you ever hear them make a big fat stink about it? NO!!!, you don't. So I think you should just be happy that God has given you another day on this Earth. So that you have the time to celebrate, with your family, whatever holiday you choose. I've decided to say HAPPY MERRY KWANZ~MA~KA that way I've covered them all.
  • Posted By: PatMuch like New Coke and the new Marco I think you've made a mistake with the new web pagedesign. I don't use Yahoo because the site is too cluttered and I feel the same about your new page. More is not necessarily better!
  • Posted By: AriIt is CHRISTMAS it is the time we celebrate Christ being born, not Kwanzza or Hanukah. Kwanzza is racist anyways it's a celebration of being black. I have no problem with people saying Happy whatever it is but I am NOT going to watch what i say and not say Marry Christmas becasue it might offend people
  • Posted By: LadyA`The question was, Did you do any Holiday shopping over the weekend? The shopping they were referring was Christmas shopping. What other holiday shopping would we be doing? Thanksgiving was over. It offended me like many others. It is the Christmas season and I want to see the word Christmas used, not holiday or xmas.
  • Posted By: HuntingtonianI agree with Anonymous!! It is the "holiday season" and by definition, it encompasses all of the holidays that are coming, not just Christmas. I also am a christian and see something inherintly wrong with pigeon holing this time of year to simply "Merry Christmas." What I find really offensive is those of you who believe that it is ok to say "Christmas" but would be outraged if "Happy Kwanza" or "Happy Hanukah" appeared anywhere. So, that being said: HAPPY HOLIDAYS and a JOYOUS NEW YEAR to all!!
  • Posted By: Holiday is in referance to ALL holidays this time of year. I have been saying Happy Holidays since I was a kid, growing up during the 80's. Christmas is not the only holiday this time of year. We did just celebrate Thanksgiving, remember. I am a Christian, that is not offended by the phrase HAPPY HOLIDAYS.
  • Posted By: annI agree with ladyA its CHRISTMAS
  • Posted By: LadyAWSAZ- Could you please change the word Holiday to Christmas on your question? The word Holiday offends me.
