POINT PLEASANT, W.Va (WSAZ) -- Long live the queen -- the Delta Queen! The old-fashioned riverboat is one of the last overnight passenger steamboats in the world. But, at the end of the month, she could be grounded permanently.

During her last stop in our region Tuesday, we walked along her decks as we strolled down memory lane for what could be her last bon voyage.

Peggy Swisher is from Union, Missouri--two hours southeast of St. Louis. For nearly 20 years, she's cruised the Delta Queen more than 15 times. For her, this majestic vessel holds the key to a peaceful life and death.

“We’d like to have our ashes sprinkled here behind the paddle wheel,” said Swisher.

Built in 1926, the queen cost nearly one-million dollars--even back then. She's made of the finest steel, exotic woods and priceless Tiffany crystal.

“We’re not asking Congress for a bailout, just permission to continue to operate,” said Bill Wiemuth, employee with the Delta Queen.

The DQ is making its last stop in Pt. Pleasant for the year. But, if Congress doesn't act, it could be the last stop ever. The queen has operated under a 42-year exemption of the Safety of Life at Sea Act. The law forbids any vessel that's constructed primarily of wood from carrying more than 50 passengers overnight in U.S. waterways. On October 31st, the Delta's exemption runs out. Those against renewing it claim safety is an issue.

“One example is most hotels have interior walls that are flammable. But, what hotel has a Coast Guard trained fire crew that lives there? We do!” said Wiemuth.

The Delta Queen has sailed the Ohio River for 60 years. Virginia Courts from Montana and Betty Vincent from California have each cruised her majesty more than 25 years. But, that's just part of her attraction.

“It just gets in your blood,” said Jim Armstrong.

Armstrong is from Catlettsburg, Kentucky, but now lives in Pittsburgh. He’s responsible for securing a proclamation from the Pennsylvania legislature supporting the queen. He once helped save the riverboat more than 30 years ago--then, he was just 14. He's confident he can do it again.

“She just means so much to me” said Armstrong.

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Delta Queen Steamboat is docked in Point Pleasant for what may be the last time.

The Queen has operated under a 42-year exemption of the safety of life at sea act. The law forbids any vessel from operating in U.S. waterways carrying more than 50 passengers overnight that's constructed primarily of wood.

On November 1st, the Delta Queens’ exemption runs out if legislation to extend the exemption is not passed by congress. The legislation does have the support of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

The historic steamboat arrived at 8am, and will remain in the city until 1pm when it will continue it’s journey down river.

Senator Obama released a statement recognizing the importance of the delta queen, and its final stop in point pleasant: "As the last remaining authentic, operable riverboat in the world, the Delta Queen is a valuable part of our nation's heritage that we have a duty to preserve and protect for future generations. As she makes her final stops in Point Pleasant, I urge Congress to support this effort to ensure the Delta Queen may continue to serve the people of Ohio and West Virginia for years to come." I have worked the river for 30 yrs and this is truly going to be a sad day.I talked to the capt. just last week and if you have not visited the web site Save The Delta Queen please do and let your politicians know that you are watching the actions on this and you will vote accordingly this is the right thing to do to preserve a major piece of our river heritage for future generations to enjoy thank you and God Bless the Queen

Having grown up on the beautiful Ohio river, I am saddened that there is no hope in saving the Delta Queen once again. As children, my brother and I eagerly waited for the Delta Queen to pass our house so that we could hear the calliope being played and to wave at the passengers on deck. Sometimes the captain would blow the horn. I was only on the Delta Queen one time as a child when she used to dock at Gallipolis and they would give tours. I regret that I was never able to board her again. I will miss seeing her cruise past Gallipolis. What a shame to lose this part of our river history. Bon Voyage! Delta Queen.

That sounds to me like the intend on taking over that too. I have heard Obama say many times over the past few years that he intends to destroy private insurance and have only the government. He said it. And on top of that, they are going to cut half a TRILLION dollars from Medicare, so our older folks won't get the care they need. I am really worried and if Nick Rahall supports this stuff I will vote for Spike Maynard.

If you find yourself in wal mart more than 4 days a week, beware of the secret shopper man they have working for them. I first noticed him peering through the vegtables at people, then I saw him walking frantic through the store in circles. At first it freaked me out, then I realized what he was doing. Why in the world would they hire such a strange person. Well one night I was in there with my children and he approach me and started to strike up a conversation, he asked me why I was in the store so much, at this point I knew he was trying to scare me from coming back or shopping there as much, it really made me upset, because the bulk of my shopping is done there. I am upset every time i have to go in wal mart because he is not a good secret shopper if he stops and gives hiself away like that, but i called and complained because he continues to follow me, and they said he is able to do that to all customers. Most countries health cares administration fees equal 5% the US is 11% why.Have you read the final plan if so tell me what part you dont like.Chances are if you work you will be covered thru work and we all know that ones who dont work are already covered thru one program or another that we already pay for thru taxes but the people who work and cant afford care right now are the ones that needs the help they are getting

When the government takes over ther will be no other options. NONE. To be honest smokers should have to pay higher premiums, just like if you live next to a river you pay for for flood insurance, since you do have a better chance of being a victim of a flood them someone who lives on a hill. And as for not going to jail if you dont carry insurance, you will be fined for not having insurance, and if you dont pay that fine what will happen? Nothing, I doubt it. Bottom line is insurance companies are in it to make a profit, so decisions are made for that purpose. If your employer said they may or may not pay you this week would you keep working? My husband and I are both WORKING and COLLEGE EDUCATED who are struggling to pay other bills because of this electric bill! We are looking into alternate sources of heat like gas, wood or pellet stoves. It is just a shame that the state of WV would allow this to happen!

  • Posted By: Margaret: Am I the only person struggling to pay the electric bill?I have AEP and my bill has more then doubled since January.I was so convinced that the meter was broke that I called and had it tested by an independant electrician.My bill was almost $700 for one month,and was never over $250 in the 5 years that I v lived here.I m told that they did a 30% increase on the electric.I v also been told that it was per kilowatt.During thease hard times ,recession,ect,how are we supposed to survive.And what about the elderly on fixed income.As well as disabled,single parents .I have talked to family members who say their bill has doubled or more.We need to stand up to thease large utility companies,maybe a petetion,calls to our state leaders ect.

I now only purchased Vet approved flea control medication. The higher cost is worth the peace of mind. I am happy to hear the medication will be more closely regulated. At least now smokers still can go outside. If they don't give up this fight, it WILL become illegal. Then where will you be? The bar owner may want to decide whether to be smoke/non smoke. But what of the workers? With jobs scarce, they may not have the option of moving out of a smoke environment. Take your smoking outside where it harms only you as you are the ones choosing it. Stop believing we have the right to force others to breathe it.
