Charleston police officer Eric Johnson was shot in Kanawha City Thursday night in a hotel parking lot.

Mayor Jones says Sgt. Johnson and his partner were taking part in a sting operation involving several crimes when the shooting happened. Johnson and his partner spotted a car in the parking lot at the Day's Inn on MacCorkle Avenue in Kanawha City.

The man, who police later identified as Brett Hanick, had been in the car for a few hours, when Sgt. Johnson and his partner approached the car and asked Hanick to put his hands up, according to the mayor. Authorities say Hanick pulled out a gun and shot Johnson once in the stomach and once in the face. The mayor says Sgt. Johnson was able to return fire and killed the man.

Police say Hanick was a fugitive from Youngstown, Ohio. He was wanted for a shooting that happened there Saturday. We're told Hanick just got out of prison on June 9 after serving time for rape, armed robbery, and kidnapping. He was a registered sex offender.

Sgt. Eric Johnson was released from the hospital Friday. He has been a police officer for 15 years. He is married and has two sons.
