CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - For the second straight year, data
gathered by State Farm Insurance shows that vehicles are most
likely to collide with deer in West Virginia - a one in 45 chance.

That's up from a year ago when the odds were one in 57.

The Bloomington, Ill.-based insurance company says Michigan came
in second again this year, followed by Pennsylvania, Iowa and
Arkansas. Virginia came in 10th.

Hawaii is the least likely state for deer-vehicle collisions,
with odds of more than one in 10,962.

State Farm said it used deer claims data from the last half of
2007 though the first half of 2008 to determine the odds.

Brandy, my employment or lack of employment is no concern of yours. If you don't like my comments, don't read them. When you see "Posted by: Pablo" just skip it since you are so immature and can't handle someone else's opinion besides yours.

guess who, if the 18s only did the speed limit I don't think anyone would complain. They got away for years with being over the load limit. When the mobile weigh stations were in the area hundreds at a time would pull off the road and just wait on them to leave. Then a bill finally passed that would let them up the load limit. Haven't seen the mobile weigh stations in awhile now. The 18s do seem to be going the speed limit before midnight. If you happen to be on the road in the wee hours of the night, watch out! Also, the Charleston Gazette had reported back in 2000 that Gov. Underwood had specifically told the DOH to not enforce the weight limit laws on coal trucks at all. They've had their breaks, when will the rest of the state.

I think something needs to be done to control deer population because deers leaping onto cars and running across road ways un-expected can cause dangerous wrecks! Deer may be one of the reasons year round that cause fatal accidents where people lose control of their vehicles for unknown reasons!

Come to Mason Co if ya want to hit deer all day. They are a dime a dozen here.I can't remember the last time my county has been out of the top 5 in deer kills. And the sad thing is we are still over populated.I think we can blame the DNR to a point by raising the price of a deer stamp every year.I remember when a doe stamp used to be 7 bucks. But now they are 10 I think. And a extra buck stamp has went up to.And farmers have to ask for a crop damage tag.The way I look at it if your crop is getting ate up by deer you should be free to take them out. They need to have a longer season like some states and let people hunt on Sundays. But you know those church goers will not stand for that. But that one day of not going to church could save ya from hitting a deer if ya kill one.BACK STRAP BOOGIE famous words from Uncle Ted

Well, "guess who.....," I'm not going to bite on this one and let it pass without comment. You have a safe night.

To guess who Maybe unlucky was going the speed limit. They didn't say they were on the interstate. My husband is a retired truck driver so I am not bad mouthing them but there are some that think they own the road. If unlucky was on a rural road the speed limit was probably 50 mph. Glad he wasn't hurt. But something does need to be done about the deer population in WV and also Ohio

hey unlucky,,if you would at least do the speed limit most of those 18s would not get so close to you,,,while your already in your hometown close to family,,and in no hurry,,,them 18s has a job to do and wants to get home to there family too...no im not saying for them to just run you over ,but you all know what i mean,,,if you want to drive slower than speed limit,,why make faster drivers live up to your likings,,just move over or something,,cars tailgate trucks all the time,,,but the trucks are trying at least...i bet pablo will like this comment,,lol

With due respect, I do blame the DNR. Game Checking Stations or the lack of them may be a problem, but it doesn't take a genius to know that there are too many deer in many parts of the state. All one has to do is drive on any road in the early evening hours. Or you can talk to the famrers who are having the deer ruining their farmland. But the best proof is the above article. West Virginia is #1 in deer/vehicle collisions. Killing bucks in not the answer. Killing does is the only thing that will reduce the deer herd. There are many good DNR people, in fact most. I don't know if its politics or what, but for some reason the DNR will not reduce the deer herd. So until they do, keep your automobile insurance premiums paid and hope all the is damaged is your vehicle. Good luck.

as a deer hunter for 20 years,im tired of 70 degree days on the first day of deer season i know of alot of hunters that stay home you cant hang the deer more than overnight or the meat will spoil, all deer seasons need put back 30 days the seasons ara changing maybe global warming is the cause.doing this i thing would increse the deer kill having less collisions.

Posted by: this is the first on Oct 8, 2008 at 08:20 PM
DNR basically let the deer population get wiped out in several counties in the last few years. A few counties especially in our area actually have an increasing deer population again. I have seen more deer in the last six months than I have seen in five years. When I moved here 10 years ago, there were 20 deer in every field you looked. Last fall was the first time in a long time that the numbers have actually increased. A great number of people can't afford to hunt because of the increase in license. A great number of out of state hunters have stopped hunting too. When the truth be told, if farmers would allow people to hunt their 60 acre farms, things would be different. I can't hunt without permission.

In the last 3 months, on Rte. 37 my husband has hit 4 deer on seperate occassions. We are definitely beating the 1 in 45 chance.

Posted by: unlucky on Oct 8, 2008 at 07:54 PM
So what are the odds of hitting two deer at once?? Not to mention I was going 55 mph when it happened... and couldn't hit my brakes at all because a semi was about 3 feet behind me, tail gating me all the way down the road!

The deer in jackson co. is terrible. my sister hit a doe when she was 9 months pregnant, and I hit a ten point buck just a week later...so I think we should have a longer hunting season or more people are going to be hurt or killed due to the deer in this area!

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 8, 2008 at 07:13 PM
sounds like we need to have a longer hunting season or at least a doe rifle season in all counties with large amounts of deer

Posted by: controlling the herd on Oct 8, 2008 at 06:21 PM
We can not blame the DNR. How can they get accurate counts on the deer population when probably 1 out of 100 people check their deer in properly at the game check station? Not to mention that hunting season is at the first of every month when new flash light batteries are affordable. But, I can not blame the hunters or the DNR, when you have to travel 30 or 40 miles to find a place to check in your deer and there is not enough DNR or check in stations to get the job done properly.

My son hit a deer going to Marshall, near Huntington causing front end damage, My wife had a deer jump over her car near Hamlin, without leaving a scratch on the car, Last a turkey hit her windshield in the same area. What are the odds of this-

Posted by: Deer lover on Oct 8, 2008 at 04:19 PM
At least in WV if you hit a deer, you can take it with you and have it for dinner!

Posted by: Pablo on Oct 8, 2008 at 04:11 PM
More proof that the Division of Natural Resources are not doing their job controlling the deer population. Until the DNR gets the guts to stand up to the hunting establishment we will continue to have these collisions. The DNR has game biologists who will not or cannot lower the deer herd. Until they do, all West Virginians will continue to pay higher premiums on their auto insurance. We will continue to suffer injuries and even deaths in these collisions. And our farmers and homeowners will continue to see their crops and orchards ruined as well as our landscaping plants in our yards. Also, our forests suffer as the deer browse line is spreading over a larger and larger part of West Virginia. I am a hunter holding a lifetime hunting permit. I have several pistols, rifles, and shotguns. I love hunting. I am not against deer only excess deer. And I know the deer population is low in some counties, i.e., Mingo.

  • Posted By: joeI have worked for companies all over this nation and have had to take drug tests. Why should teachers be exempt from this practice? It is now common to be randomly tested(and I have been) so what makes a teacher any different than a steel worker. I can say proudly that I passed but I have seen those who didn't. They chose to use drugs and lost their jobs I didn't.
  • Posted By: KatyAs a teacher, I have no problem being randomly drug tested...as long as you agree to drug test the parents who enter the doors of my school as well. Most teachers deal with students who are exposed to/use more drugs and alcohol than any of the teachers. If these students or parents who are using drugs (and are not drug tested) enter our schools, the safety of the teachers and students are at risk. Since children spend more time with them, let's randomly drug test PARENTS, too!!!
  • Posted By: stephenWhy the heavy emphasis ont he damage to property and life Israel is doing . Where was the media uproar for years that Hamas was rocketing Israel irespective of innocent israelis.. Hamas is actualykilling their own citizens by firing rockets from UN schools and residents. Why does UN allow Hamas to use facilities for attacking Israel, then complain when Israel responds to protect their territory and citizens. Israel targets military targets, respons to from whence rockets or gun fire comes. What would we fire at if Huntington was attacked? Why does the media not put bla,e where balame belongs, and give moral support to the aggreived. What would America do if attacked? to whom would we listen? Russia, Saudi Arabia,Iran?.Media get REAL! Who has given Hamas and the Palestinians millions with which they could buy weapons---American taxpayers money!
  • Posted By: RobertAlthough I feel for the employees that lost their positions at Cabell Huntington Hospital, at least more nurses were hired. I recently had a relative in the cardiac unit at Kings Daughters, in Ashland, and I was told that the nursing staff had been cut back and that no overtime was being given. This seems to be a drastic cut in patient care for a facility that spends thousands advertising that they are in the top 5% of cardiac hospitals in the country. I would be willing to wager that the Cleveland Clinic has not cut hours of those giving patient care.
  • Posted By: BoydIf the state's budget is doing so well, why don't we use some of this money to help towns and cities in the state who are in trouble with their budget, or will this just become another pay raise for politicians?
  • Posted By: RobWhy does everyone have to be so into using the term "racist" and have that kind of attitude. I know what my heritage is and who my ancestors were but you want to know what I consider myself? I AM AN AMERICAN! I was born and raised in this country and that's how I feel it should be. Born here, raised here.....then by God you are an American. Not an African American, not an Asian American etc. etc. You are an AMERICAN!
  • Posted By: ChrisTo Ex-Officer: I agree with you 100% about the pay of police dept and the drug testing. I was formerly involved with the BCPD and had multiple ride alongs with the BCSO. I am probably one of their biggest critics due to having watch some of the bad side of the department for a long time. I wish that I could tell everything that I have seen officers do,which would put most of them behind bars or they'll lose their sheild, But retalliation is bad in our area. To the cops that do their job and do it with the best intentions, I proud of you and don't mean any disrespect. To the ones who I personally watch being more currupt then the "badguys" here, your day will be coming.
  • Posted By: PabloTeachers aren't the only ones underpaid. Law enforcement officers are underpaid also. And I'd like to speak about them. For example, I'm sure any parent would sacrifice their live for thier children. And several may give thier live to save their spouse. A few individuals may even do it for a close friend. But, I only know of 3 types of beings who will sacrifice thier lives for complete strangers; indeed even for people who hate them. The first would be our men and women in our armed forces. The second would be our law enforcement officers. And of course, third would be our Savior, Jesus Christ. Others are killed in the line of their employment, but not in order to save a complete stranger. Everytime a cop puts on his/her uniform, they can be a target for anyone upset about something. Even though it doesn't involve the cop personally, that very cop will give his life to save yours when a problem arises. We need to give our cops not only a wage, but a living wage and a great big THANKS.
  • Posted By: CraigIf what I am hearing is correct that Kanawha County teachers accepted a pay raise in return for submitting to drug testing, and then sued successfully so they do not have to be subject to testing, then why shouldn't we the taxpayers demand they return the raise?
  • Posted By: teresaracist lmao i am one cherokee, german, irish, german, and who knows what else TIRED of hearing of racist comments u are either GOOD OR BAD k no skin color needed just evil or NOT
  • Posted By: Ex-OfficerI agree with Robert 100% I worked in law enforcement and loved the job but try to rise a family on less than 10.00 an hour (out of that pay for your own duty gear and gun). I believe that all public safety workers should be drug tested but i also believe that they should be paid for the job that they do. Not many people understand what a public safty worker goes through. Would you put your life on the line for this kind of pay? Remember the saying that you get what you pay for. I see this in several new officers in my area. Don't get me wrong there are still very good officers in law enforcement. Something really needs to be done about the low pay for these jobs.
  • Posted By: GarlandWhat's the difference between teachers and other workers(coal mineers, bus drivers, state employees, etc.)? Teachers aren't any better are they?
  • Posted By: This is not a comment, but I would like comments on it please. What do you think of Poca High School? Racist or not?
  • Posted By: RobertWe the people, through our own self centeredness and apathy, have allowed our teachers and police officials to be some of the most underpaid people in the United States. We are trusting our childrens education and our public safety to the very people that are some of the most underpaid profesions in the U.S.. If I could change this, I would. However, I do believe that these people should be randomly drug tested. I work in the construction industry and I have no problem being drug tested. I have nothing to hide. I also believe that any person who is intrusted with the safety of others should have nothing to hide. This includes plitical officials up to and including the president.
