CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Charleston, W.Va., and the Mountain State were well represented at a Barack Obama rally Friday morning in southern Ohio.

Front and center among the estimated 3,000 people gathered at the Ross County Courthouse in Chillicothe were about a dozen West Virginia union coal miners. They came to hear the candidate get specific on creating, maintaining and finding better American jobs, as well as to support the Senator’s backing of the pending employee free choice act, a federal bill that would make it easier for workers to organize unions.

The union coal miners said Senator Obama is a co-sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act, which he has promised to sign into law if he wins the presidency.

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama focused on the economy and health care in his visit to Southern Ohio Thursday night.

Obama spoke at Shawnee State University to a crowd of supporters, but also people who considered themselves undecided voters.

Nikki Chandler showed up to hear about education.

"I want to know what they're going to do on education. I am an educator and I want to know who is going to do best for the schools," Nikki Chandler said.

Obama criticized the plan by his opponent, Republican John McCain, to buy bad mortgages and refinance them at their current value for homeowners.

"We have to do it in a responsible way. That means making sure we're not overpaying for these mortgages or rewarding the very lenders who very recklessness helped cause this crisis," Obama said.

An article from the Associated Press recently questioned whether race would play a role in Scioto County's choice for a president, but some dismissed that claim Thursday night.

"The majority now, they're not looking at race, they're not even looking at their arguments, they're looking at what we need," Brenda Drown said. "And I think they see that Obama is bringing us what we need -- not McCain."

Obama plans a visit to Chillicothe Friday morning before attending a rally in Columbus that afternoon.

Wow Terri, are you passing judgment on a person's relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. That relationship is only seen (truely) by our Lord. I was with you until then. I believe that Obama is a Christian but differ on his beliefs of abortion. Donna makes a good point about Bush not making abortion illegal and I'm not sure McCain will do anything about it either. I've read about both men and feel nothing will be done about abortion.

McCain if elected would be 76 at the end of his term!! Age is a issue. I respect my Bible and also believe there are people that read it out of context, to have the Bible say what fits what they believe. It's amazing that Republicans believe in upholding life but believe it's okay to put someone to death. McCain will not make abortion illegal because if he did how would you vote in the next election Republican? The "Moral" issue would be gone. The Bible would lead you to vote Democrat due to Democrats are more for the people. To help the poor, to help the needy. To create more social programs to help get people back on their feet. In 1999 and 2000, McCain gave numerous interviews in which he carved out a "middle ground," arguing that Roe v. Wade should be made "irrelevant" but not repealed, citing the danger to women from illegal abortions. McCain's wife, Cindy, stated that she and the senator are not in favor of overturning Roe V Wade (Catholicism) Changes his mind like the wind.

Janette I agree. My spirit is led by Jesus Christ. What works do you want to look at the fact that McCain has NEVER joined a church because he has not been bapized as an adult. Am person that does not attend church on a regular basis? I agree to look at T.D. Jakes and agree with his statement. I also agree with T.D. Jakes when he advised CNN and backed Obama in June, 2008.

to donna, i did watch it and sarah palin and joe biden are NOT running for president just VP and yes obama did say that and mccain said he would NOT. look lady you can go ahead and try to convnince yourself if you want to. mccain said he would not legalize gay marriages and also said he would not legalize abortions. when obama was asked that question his answer was "that would be up to the state to decide that" a christian man or woman would say just exactly what mccain said, it doesn't matter if they are republicans or democrats that is what they said. and as i said how can a christian support obama after saying that, ever christian i know says that is the only reasons (or 2 ) they are not voting obama. me and my family are as religious as they come (and i have a bi-racial family too) and will not support a man who does not support the words of our lord and savior Jesus Christ.

Terri, You need to pay attention to the news, debates, etc. Obama does not believe in abortion but he believes that every woman has the right to decide. Did you know that six of the U.S. Justices that voted for ROE V Wade were REPUBLICANS! If the republicans wanted to make abortion illegal guess what, they had the chance. 6 of the 8 years that George Bush was in office, Bush had both houses (Republican) and the Supreme court (Republican)to back him up. As far as gay rights did you not see the V.P. debate. Joe Biden stated he was not for gay marriage he actually agreed with Palan!!! In Calf. the Republican Supreme court there approved GAY MARRIAGE. I was also at the rally. It was inspiring and gave me hope for a better future with actual plans on how to fix some of the problems that currently exist. It is also encouraging to see the latest poll by the American Research Group showing an 8 point lead for Obama in WV!

Where were all the christians standing up for babies lives? There was only one little old lady holding an abortion sign. Bless you lady. Thank you. Voice of truth ministries were there recording for their online radio broadcast. Even from the few christians that were there that they talked to forgot about supporting God's agenda. We care about the economy too, but we are judged on our decisions. We need to care about the babies dying every day due to abortion. I am sorry folks, but God said He knew us in the womb. If something grows it is alive. If you stop it from living, even a spider, did you kill it? yes. Killing a spider might not be wrong, but a baby is. There are more moral issues that Christians need to make our government aware that we won't tolerate the wrong moral decisions. Is having a demacrat as president wrong- not if he votes right for the moral issues. It's not the democratic party that I'm against. It's their voting wrong on certain issues.

Yes, snubbed again in WV after the "Three Kings" Byrd,Rahall, and Rockefeller...decided to cast OUR votes towards Obama, instead of going the way West Virginian's chose and casting their Super Votes towards Hillary! You'd think after they betrayed even their own voters, Obama would have ran as fast as he could to get here....but I guess we don't count, unless your counting Super Delegate Votes! If Obama is not choosen by a majority of voters in Scioto County on Nov. 4th, why is it so easily assumed that it would be because of race. I feel that the choice for president is far removed from the race issue; it's a choice of ideology and worldview. In fact, if Alan Keyes, an African-American, received the nomination for president, I would jump over both of these candidates to vote for him. Alan Keyes is more in line with my worldview than either of the present candidates. So, for me, race is an absolute non-factor, and to suggest otherwise is an insult to my intelligence.

All this world disaster has been spread from our elections. I know that the curent administration was a dud but the press wants Obama as president and will stop at nothing to get it. Look at Obama's numbers since the economic crisis. I dont think it was planned but I do not think this would have happened if we were not in a election. The markets respond in knee jerk ways. Look at 9/11, stock market dived and why? Fear drives the market down, there is always instability after a two term president. I hope the U.S. recovers after this no matter who is president.

I was at the rally tonight for Obama! He was amazing! I can only pray that he makes it to the Presidency, our country can not handle 4 more years of republicans!

It is now common to be randomly tested(and I have been) so what makes a teacher any different than a steel worker. I can say proudly that I passed but I have seen those who didn't. They chose to use drugs and lost their jobs I didn't.
  • Posted By: Katy: As a teacher, I have no problem being randomly drug tested...as long as you agree to drug test the parents who enter the doors of my school as well. Most teachers deal with students who are exposed to/use more drugs and alcohol than any of the teachers. If these students or parents who are using drugs (and are not drug tested) enter our schools, the safety of the teachers and students are at risk. Since children spend more time with them, let's randomly drug test PARENTS, too!!!

Where was the media uproar for years that Hamas was rocketing Israel irespective of innocent israelis.. Hamas is actualykilling their own citizens by firing rockets from UN schools and residents. Why does UN allow Hamas to use facilities for attacking Israel, then complain when Israel responds to protect their territory and citizens. Israel targets military targets, respons to from whence rockets or gun fire comes. What would we fire at if Huntington was attacked?Why does the media not put bla,e where balame belongs, and give moral support to the aggreived.What would America do if attacked? to whom would we listen? Russia, Saudi Arabia,Iran?.Media get REAL! Who has given Hamas and the Palestinians millions with which they could buy weapons---American taxpayers money!
  • Posted By: Robert: Although I feel for the employees that lost their positions at Cabell Huntington Hospital, at least more nurses were hired. I recently had a relative in the cardiac unit at Kings Daughters, in Ashland, and I was told that the nursing staff had been cut back and that no overtime was being given. This seems to be a drastic cut in patient care for a facility that spends thousands advertising that they are in the top 5% of cardiac hospitals in the country. I would be willing to wager that the Cleveland Clinic has not cut hours of those giving patient care.

I know what my heritage is and who my ancestors were but you want to know what I consider myself? I AM AN AMERICAN! I was born and raised in this country and that's how I feel it should be. Born here, raised here.....then by God you are an American. Not an African American, not an Asian American etc. etc. You are an AMERICAN!
  • Posted By: Chris: To Ex-Officer: I agree with you 100% about the pay of police dept and the drug testing. I was formerly involved with the BCPD and had multiple ride alongs with the BCSO. I am probably one of their biggest critics due to having watch some of the bad side of the department for a long time. I wish that I could tell everything that I have seen officers do,which would put most of them behind bars or they'll lose their sheild, But retalliation is bad in our area. To the cops that do their job and do it with the best intentions, I proud of you and don't mean any disrespect. To the ones who I personally watch being more currupt then the "badguys" here,your day will be coming.
  • Posted By: Pablo: Teachers aren't the only ones underpaid. Law enforcement officers are underpaid also. And I'd like to speak about them. For example, I'm sure any parent would sacrifice their live for thier children. And several may give thier live to save their spouse. A few individuals may even do it for a close friend. But, I only know of 3 types of beings who will sacrifice thier lives for complete strangers; indeed even for people who hate them. The first would be our men and women in our armed forces. The second would be our law enforcement officers. And of course, third would be our Savior, Jesus Christ. Others are killed in the line of their employment, but not in order to save a complete stranger. Everytime a cop puts on his/her uniform, they can be a target for anyone upset about something. Even though it doesn't involve the cop personally, that very cop will give his life to save yours when a problem arises. We need to give our cops not only a wage, but a living wage and a great big THANKS.
  • Posted By: Craig: If what I am hearing is correct that Kanawha County teachers accepted a pay raise in return for submitting to drug testing, and then sued successfully so they do not have to be subject to testing, then why shouldn't we the taxpayers demand they return the raise?

  • Posted By: Ex-Officer: I agree with Robert 100% I worked in law enforcement and loved the job but try to rise a family on less than 10.00 an hour (out of that pay for your own duty gear and gun). I believe that all public safety workers should be drug tested but i also believe that they should be paid for the job that they do. Not many people understand what a public safty worker goes through. Would you put your life on the line for this kind of pay? Remember the saying that you get what you pay for. I see this in several new officers in my area. Don't get me wrong there are still very good officers in law enforcement. Something really needs to be done about the low pay for these jobs.

  • Posted By: Robert: We the people, through our own self centeredness and apathy, have allowed our teachers and police officials to be some of the most underpaid people in the United States. We are trusting our childrens education and our public safety to the very people that are some of the most underpaid profesions in the U.S.. If I could change this, I would. However, I do believe that these people should be randomly drug tested. I work in the construction industry and I have no problem being drug tested. I have nothing to hide. I also believe that any person who is intrusted with the safety of others should have nothing to hide. This includes plitical officials up to and including the president.
